Coming up in today”s show, Tzu Chi volunteers in the United States hand out emergency funds and give emotional support to victims of a fire in Texas.
It”s Confucius”s birthday, and Teachers” Day today. We celebrate by introducing you to some teachers who have made a difference to their students” lives.
And after it was battered by a string of disasters, starting with the 9/21 earthquake in 1999, we go back to Taiwan”s River Dajia, to find out if it has recovered.

1.德州林火發放 Helping fire victims in Texas
First up today, as the effects of global warming continue to be felt all around the globe, early this month, days of heat and strong winds caused a severe fire in the US state of Texas. The blaze destroyed 76 houses and severely damaged another 23 in three counties. After some assessments, Tzu Chi volunteers decided to hand out individual awards of 400-600 USD in emergency cash to help a total of 50 families.
節目一開始，地球暖化持續，在全世界各個角落都可以感受到，這個月初在美國德州高溫天氣加上強風造成大火，這裡三個郡有76間房屋全毀，23間嚴重受損，在勘災後，慈濟志工發放四百到六百元現值卡給50戶家庭。
2.南港獨居修屋 Helping senior woman renovate
Tzu Chi volunteers in Taipei, Taiwan, helped a senior resident living alone last weekend. The elderly woman”s house had a broken roof and ceiling which leaked every time it rained. Volunteers fixed the roof, replaced the broken beams with steel frames and even gave the interior a make-over. At the end of the two-day renovation, the elderly woman said she was happy and grateful for Tzu Chi”s help.
台灣台北的慈濟志工，上周末把握機會探訪獨居的老人家，這位阿嬤家裡屋頂壞掉，每次下雨都會淹水，志工們前來修繕屋頂，將壞掉的樑柱改為鋼樑，也將室內重新整理過，在兩天的整修下來，阿嬤很開心，也很感恩慈濟的幫忙。

3.老師謝謝你(一)許春蘭 Due respect for teachers
Practicing good teachings is appropriate today, because September 28th is Confucius”s birthday - the day when Taiwanese people celebrate Teachers” Day. It”s a time for students to show their respect to their instructors. Coming up, we have a special series of reports, to honor several special teachers, who go above and beyond the call of duty, to make a difference to the lives of their pupils. We start, with the story of Xu Chunlan( 許春蘭), who comes from a poor indigenous family, in southern Taiwan. Not wanting to see young children miss out on an education because of poverty, she quit her teaching job three years ago, to set up an NGO, to care for needs of indigenous families.
今天是9月28號，台灣的教師節，是慶祝孔子的誕辰，也向所有老師表達敬意，我們將為您介紹一群很特別的老師，他們犧牲奉獻，只為了他們的學生，一開始先介紹許春蘭，她出身南台灣貧寒家庭，因為不希望原住民孩子，因家庭經濟因素，失去了求學機會，所以3年前她辭去了教職工作，創辦恆春原住民全人關懷促進協會，幫助貧困原住民家庭。
4.感念師恩(1)游憲章 Honoring a distinguished surgeon
Next we meet Professor Xu Shujian(許書劍), who was not only once the leading surgeon in Taiwan, but also taught many renowned doctors, at National Taiwan University. One of his students, Dr. You Xianzhang(游憲章), the deputy superintendent of Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, can”t say enough good things about his former professor.
接下來為您介紹許書劍教授，他是台灣外科泰斗，也在台大孕育出許多知名的醫師，他其中的一位學生，台北慈濟醫院副院長游憲章，提到老師，有說不完的感恩與尊重。
5.馬花道交流 Seeing a universe in a flower
The third and final teacher for today is Malaysian volunteer Chen Binghuang, who found new meaning to life after discovering he had cancer. Now, he grasps each and every moment to volunteer. We caught up with him at the Community Education Center in Malacca, where he teaches Zen and the art of flower arrangement.
今天要介紹的第三位老師，是馬來西亞慈濟志工陳炳煌，罹患癌症後，卻發現生命的新意義，他把握分秒來付出，我們來到馬六甲社教中心，看看他和花道班學員分享花藝課程的情形。

In school, students should dress properly to show self-respect. When they respect themselves, they will then respect others. Students must learn proper etiquette as part of their education, which will help propagate harmony in their schools and society.
在校園裡，孩子們服裝、儀容整齊，即是自愛、敬人；尊重自己，才能表達對人的敬重。要落實禮儀教育，才能讓整個校園有和、有敬，未來的社會才能祥和。
6.大河劫大甲溪(1) Disaster waiting to happen on R. Dajia?
Managing water resources is an issue that won”t go away in Taiwan. The island”s short and fast-flowing rivers are vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters. Starting today, we”ll be bringing you a series of feature reports on the Dajia River, in central Taiwan - covering the problems of water and soil retention, over-exploitation, and industrial pollution, from the source of the river to its estuary.

Birth of Confucius
A Chinese thinker and social philosopher of the Spring and Autumn Period, Confucius was born on this day in 551 BC. Master Kong began teaching peasants at the age of 30, and his philosophy became known as Confucianism, which has deeply influenced China and Chinese communities in the world. In 1952, the President of the Republic of China declared this day to be all around Teachers Day in Taiwan, to honor Master Kong and all teachers.
1989
Death of Ferdinand Marcos
Filipino dictator, Ferdinand Marcos ruled for two decades. After the controversial presidential election in 1986 led to a revolution, Marcos was removed from power and exiled to Hawaii of the United States. He would later die on this day in 1989.
1996
TIMA clinic in Lamay
Over 100 volunteers from Kaohsiung, Taiwan arrived on the offshore island of Xiaoliuqiu(小琉球) or Lamay to hold its first ever Tzu Chi free clinic. Volunteers also shared with islanders how joining the Buddhist NGO had changed their lives. Medical volunteers visited families on the island to help raise health awareness. The free clinic remains a regular event today.
1997

office opens
In 1993, over 100 Tzu Chi members in Indonesia starting supporting local shelters and orphanages, winning recognition from the government and people. On this day in 1997, thanks to the sponsorship of local entrepreneur Huang Yicong黃弈聰, Tzu Chi”s new grounds in Jakarta became a liaison office.
2003
Regaining lost memory
An old homeless person, Ms. Wu, who had wandered the streets of Taiwan”s Pingtung County was taken under Tzu Chi”s wing. The senior who had lost her memory returned home today 2003 with the help of volunteers. Beginning in 2005, Grandma Wu started visiting the local Tzu Chi recycling station to volunteer and donated 3 USD a month to help pay the love forward.
2010
TC Qishan Liaison Office
In order to help expedite Tzu Chi”s post-Morakot relief effort, Qishan Township in southern Taiwan gave its Farmers Recreation and Activity Center to the Buddhist NGO to establish an office. The official agreement was signed on this day in 2010, and volunteers quickly renovated the center to help serve Tzu Chi”s missions.
西元前551年，孔子誕生，至聖先師，中國的思想家與哲學家孔子於西元前551年出生於春秋時代，孔子三十歲時開始講學，首開平民教育風氣，是儒家學派創始人，直到現在仍然影響中國與華人，民國四十一年，由中華民國總統明令這天為教師節，提倡尊師重道。
1989年，菲律賓總統馬可仕病逝，菲律賓的獨裁者馬可仕統治國家20年，因為1986年不公正的總統大選，引爆人民革命運動，他被迫下台而遠走美國夏威夷，這天心臟病發，病逝於檀香山。
1996年，慈濟人醫首次小琉球義診，高雄地區一百多位志工，這天前往屏東小琉球，舉辦第一場慈濟義診，活動中志工也與當地居民分享他們加入志工的人生轉變，醫護志工也會挨家挨戶宣導提高衛生教育，義診關懷持續至今。
1997年，慈濟深耕，印尼分會成立，從1993年開始，一百多位慈濟會員開始在當地關懷收容所和孤兒院，受到當地政府和民眾認同，這天在雅加達啟用新會所，由當地企業家黃弈聰所捐贈，成立慈濟印尼連絡處。
2003年，失落的名字找回真實人生，長年流浪屏東街頭的吳老太太，記憶力嚴重退化，經過當地慈濟志工的關懷與陪伴，協助她找回身份，安排住所，2003的這天，志工帶著她回家探親，2005年吳老太太也到慈濟環保站回收分類，還每月捐出一百元做好事。
2010年，農民中心簽約，成立旗山聯絡處，原本是地方上的農民休閒活動中心，由於莫拉克風災，慈濟在當地援助的需求，而由地方政府提供給慈濟基金會做為據點，2010的這天雙方正式簽約，並且經由慈濟志工的整理與改裝，帶動當地人文。

As we just saw in our history feature, the Tzu Chi Indonesia Liaison Office opened its doors on this day in 1997. Now, 14 years later, Tzu Chi”s four missions of charity, medicine, education, and humanity have taken root in Indonesia. Let”s go see how it all began.
