New fledgling doctors from TCU

Does not want others to suffer

What to do in a tunnel fire?

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Dennis Wu. Thank you for joining us.

50 pre-med students of the Tzu Chi University in Hualien will soon begin their residency; Master Cheng Yen gives her blessings to these fledgling doctors personally at the Jing Si Abode. Though Suciwati of Indonesia”s Jakarta is on Tzu Chi”s financial aid program and has seven children to care for, she still does what she can to reciprocate as she does not want others to suffer. And, we learn from the fatal collision that took place in Taiwan”s Hsuehshan Tunnel on May seventh, and teach you how to stay safe in case of a tunnel fire.

Sending off TCU pre-med students

To help send off the 50 pre-med students of Hualien”s Tzu Chi University as they embark on their residency, a ceremony was held at the Jing Si Abode on Monday. Master Cheng Yen attended the event in person and hoped the students will not only become the guardian of life and health but also the protector of character and compassion as well.

Free clinic remedies pain

Tzu Chi”s medical staff and volunteers often hold free clinics wherever in the world they are needed to help ease pain and suffering. We now check out one recent clinic in the village of Pedu in Malaysia”s Kedah. Besides having treated more than one hundred people, the volunteers also taught residents how to care for themselves.

Home visitations in Xiamen

Many medical professionals do get inspired to volunteer after seeing the dedication of Tzu Chi”s doctors and nurses. For example, medical staff from the Xiamen Hospital in China recently joined local Tzu Chi volunteers in their monthly home visitations to help treat Tzu Chi”s care recipients.

A care recipient reciprocates

Suicwati is a Tzu Chi care recipient living in Indonesia”s Jakarta. Although she has to care for her ill husband and seven children, her monthly salary of less than 65 USD does not allow her to make ends meet. Thankfully, Tzu Chi stepped in and offered the family monthly financial aid. To reciprocate, Suciwati is doing what she can to promote Tzu Chi”s work in her community.

Environmental event joined by students

Anyone can give, and it is really easier than you think. Staying in Indonesia, through an environmental protection workshop recently held at the Buddhasena monastery, Tzu Chi volunteers from the City of Bogor and Tangerang hoped the participating students will start practicing recycling at home.

Coin banks made from plastic bottle caps

When everyone does a little bit, their combined effort can make a big difference. In Taichung”s Longjing, PET bottle caps that don”t seem to have much use can in fact be turned in to coin banks that remind people to conserve resources. Here”s more.

(4)Safety measures inside Hsuehshan Tunnel

Over the past few days we have been studying the fatal collision-induced fire that happened inside Taiwan”s Hsuehshan Tunnel on May seventh, and trying to learn from it. In case you are caught in a similar situation, remember to park your vehicle against the curb, leave your key on the ignition, head against the traffic, go into a connection tunnel to your right, and await further instructions. Here”s more.

More Buddha Day ceremony reports

The next story takes us to Chile, as we join Tzu Chi volunteers in the city of Penalolen at their Buddha Day ceremony and winter aid distribution. But first, we go to Germany in Europe, where Tzu Chi volunteers held a volunteer training seminar for the first time where the Italian artist Vittorio Amadio donated 100 paintings to the Buddhist NGO.

At the end of today”s program, we travel to the United States and join students of Tzu Chi kindergartens in northern California and Dallas, as they demonstrate the Tzu Chi humanity that they have learned over the past school year. That”s all the time we have for. Thank you for watching. Goodbye.

Rice for 800+ families in Pasig

Keeping a safe distance in tunnels

Free clinic for ill-fed children

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Leeway Tsai. Thank you for joining us.

●Coming up in the show, Tzu Chi”s rice distribution in Pasig City, in the Philippines” Metro Manila, helps feed more than 800 struggling families.

●In the continuation of our featured series on Taiwan”s longest Hsuehshan Tunnel and its safety flaws, we investigate how the tunnel”s increased speed limit and the following distance, which stays the same, may contribute to road accidents.

●Later, in Singkawang, in Indonesia”s West Kalimantan, Tzu Chi”s joint free clinic with the local health bureau treats over 300 undernourished youngsters and provide them with food to supplement their poor diet.

We start the show in Pasig City in the Philippines Metro Manila, where Tzu Chi volunteers recently held a rice distribution. This time, a total of 806 families received the rice. To ensure the success of the distribution, before the event, volunteers visited the beneficiaries and handed out rice vouchers to the families that qualified for aid.

The money donated by the rich or poor is going around the world to help those in greater need, such as the disadvantaged students in China”s more remote regions. For several years now, Tzu Chi volunteers in the country have traveled far and wide to deliver scholarship aid to worthy students in need. Pupils also do their part to give back to society in the best way they can.

Blessings come from being sincere and pious in each and every moment. Peace comes from being compassionate and kind-hearted in daily life.

The fatal auto accident inside Taiwan”s Hsuehshan Tunnel on May seventh caused serious public concern on the safety of the fifth longest tunnel in the world. When the tunnel opened six years ago, the speed limit was 70 km/h, and vehicles needed to maintain a safe following distance of 50 m. However, the speed limit has since been raised to 80 km/h and now 90 km/h, while the safe distance remains unchanged. In the continuation of our featured series on the tunnel, we find out what lessons were learned after the latest accident, which has already prompted the National Highway Bureau to evaluate the possibility of increasing the safe distance of large vehicles to 100 m.

According to the Singkawang Health Bureau, over 300 children in the Indonesian town are undernourished. In order to help, Tzu Chi and the local health department came together to offer a free health clinic for these ill-fed children. Volunteers also put together a healthy and nutritious care package for the youngsters and their families.

Staying in Indonesia, we introduce to you 32-year-old Wulan and her family. Wulan”s third child, two-year-old Nadia, was born with multiple illnesses and has already undergone three surgeries. The medical expenses put the family under a lot of financial pressure. The desperate mother, who is also a loyal viewer of Da Ai TV, decided to seek help from Tzu Chi. After a home visitation to Wulan, Tzu Chi volunteers started providing the struggling family with financial and emotional support.

A mother”s unconditional love is indeed the greatest support a child can ever have. To raise awareness of the importance of acknowledging our parents” love, in Penghu, Taiwan, Tzu Chings from the National Penghu University of Science and Technology, held a gathering to get the message across to their fellow students.

On Peace and Harmony

Social harmony is a blessing for all citizens, and harmony on Earth is a blessing for all mankind. No matter which country we are from, we need to discipline ourselves to avoid contributing to chaos and discord in society.

Song Jiang Zhen Battle Array is a martial art performance often seen at Taiwan”s major temple fairs. Every ”soldier” in the formation carries a shield, made from bamboo. In our regular feature on Taiwan”s traditional industries, we meet Weng Minghui, a 79-year-old from Tainan who has been making these shields for almost 60 years. According to the old craftsman, there were a lot of people in his community using bamboo to weave handicrafts, but very few of them considered making shields for their lack of commercial value, as orders only come in a few months a year. To this day Weng Minghui insists on making the bamboo shields with his own two hands- the only way he knows how.

In Taichung, volunteer Chen Huiying(陳惠瑛) was diagnosed with cervical cancer when she was 39 years old. After a successful treatment, the cancer survivor joined Tzu Chi and has been a committed volunteer to this day. In addition to making coin banks from used donation receipts, for the past 4 years Chen Huiying has also given half of her salary to Tzu Chi.

At the end of the show, we meet the members of another Tzu Ching Club, this time from Taiwan”s National Tsing Hua University, who actively promoted vegetarianism on campus by offering free meatless food to the students. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.

This May, Indonesia”s Tzu Chi volunteers in West Jakarta are providing free meatless meals, twice-weekly, for local residents, as part of Tzu Chi”s vegetarian campaign. The plant-based fare went down very well with local residents and also encouraged them to embrace a vegetarian diet at home.

A group of 16 prominent entrepreneurs from Malaysia visited Jing Si Abode in Hualien, Taiwan, to learn more about Tzu Chi and its four missions. Master Cheng Yen encouraged these visitors, who have a lot of resources at hand, to inspire others to do good and help promote peace in society.

As the Malaysian enterpreneurs have learned, Tzu Chi”s charity mission began 46 years ago, with a group of women who saved 50 cents a day to help the needy. In the same way, Tzu Chi volunteers in Taichung have made coin banks from aprons and distributed them throughout the community to encourage people to save whenever they can to help others.

One who can show us the right path is a good teacher. One who can walk the right path with us is a good friend.

Engineers put in an extraordinary amount of effort to ensure that the construction, design and safety of Taiwan”s Hsuehshan, or Snow Mountain Tunnel, met international standards in every way. However, all the safety precautions and measures in place could not guarantee a zero accident rate, as the recent car collision in the tunnel has proven. In the continuation of our in-depth report on the safety of the tunnel, we asked experts to explain the factors that caused or exacerbated the accident.

In March of this year, Tzu Chi”s medical volunteers and staff were invited by the Department of Health of China”s Xiamen to share their experiences with senior nurses with management duties from ten different hospitals, in a three day seminar. The workshop was held again this month due to popular demand. Shunchang (順昌) County Hospital”s superintendent and his staff even took a 12-hour redeye bus to join the event .

As more and more nurses complain about working conditions in Taiwan”s hospitals, it is good to remember that there are many who love the job. For instance, the nurses at Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, in addition to their regular duties, also take time to join in Tzu Chi”s free clinics. For these nurses, the extra work is not a burden, but a blessing.

On Righteous Heart and Thinking
With a righteous heart and thinking, after making sure an action would not bring harm but only good to everyone, go ahead and proceed with it. One may not know how exactly to proceed in the beginning, but through action one gains experience, and after careful evaluation, the right way will be discovered.

In Taiwan, 90-year-old Zhuang Zhaozhi (莊招治) is the only artisan left in her trade that makes Mazu shoes, which are named after the deity Mazu. The 5cm long shoes are made to bring forth blessings for children. The petite, ornamental shoes require great eyesight and intricate needle work to make, as we shall find out next in our regular feature on Taiwan sunset trades.

Still in Taiwan, Tzu Chi care recipient Ms. Yang from Zhongli, is an Indonesian who was married to a Taiwanese. After her husband passed away from liver cancer ten years ago, she had to look after their three children on her own. The family of four lives in a small house with an unused second floor. Recently volunteers helped them clean out upstairs, in addition to giving the floor a new paint job.

We start today”s program in Taiwan”s New Taipei City, the main beam of Xindian”s new Jing Si Hall was installed on Monday, May 21st. The building will be over 36,300 square-meters in area, and sits eight stories above ground with two floors underground. Adjacent to the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, it will serve as a training ground for the cultivation of more bodhisattvas while also complimenting the hospital”s functions.

Moving to Indonesia, every month Jakarta”s Tzu Chi volunteers pay regular visits to the homes of their care recipients. Ahmad and his wife were inspired by the volunteers and in just a year they have donated five filled bamboo banks to Tzu Chi. They hope the money collected can help other needy families.

Staying in Asia, but moving to the Philippines, the local Tzu Chi Chapter is continuing to distribute rice donated by the Taiwan government to needy residents, particularly those who are struggling to make ends meet. This time, volunteers arrived in Mandaluyong and Manila to hand out 20kg bags of rice to families with children, or those soon to give birth.

Back to Taiwan, the island”s Hsueshan Tunnel is world”s fifth longest tunnel. This remarkable engineering achievement helped connect the country”s remote eastern region, with the densely populated western region. Sadly on May seventh, an auto accident inside the tunnel triggered a fire that left two death and 31 injured. Today, we begin a series of reports to examine what went wrong and take a closer look at the causes of the previous accidents, as well as the design and what can we do to prevent similar events from happening again.

Parents provide the mold and teachers provide the model; through each of their actions they teach children the right view of life.

Continuing on the ”Power of Love” reports, Tzu Chi volunteers in Japan come from a variety of backgrounds: Some are local volunteers, others came to Japan from Taiwan after marring a local, while others are family members of Taiwanese officials stationed in Japan. In our next report we visit four women who either work at, or are the wives of those that work at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Japan. Despite their privileged background, these four women have thrown themselves into the work of spreading the love of Tzu Chi and are helping bring even more bodhisattvas into its fold. Here”s more.

The next story takes us to China, where Tzu Chi volunteers have been visiting a nursing home in Beijing every month since October 2011. The director of the nursing home recently proposed to clear a space for volunteers to use as a recycling point. Volunteers of all ages join the effort to transform the place into a colorful station.

Recently Tzu Chi”s Kluang liaison office in Malaysia established a new recycling station. For the past 12 years, Simpang Renggam”s Tzu Chi volunteers have been practicing recycling at a rented school. However, as more and more recyclables are collected volunteers didn”t have enough time to sort the recyclables that is given by the school on time . Now with a new home everyone can practice recycling free of worries.

People chase after fame and social status, which bring troubles into their lives; yet for those who are wise, they know to center themselves and not listen to rumors. By accepting the Dharma, they are free of such trivial matters.

By eating 80 percent full and helping others with the remaining 20 percent, even elementary school students can make contributions to society. Chen Honghua 陳泓樺 is a fifth grader from Taiping Taichung. Every time he helps with household chores or performs well at school, his mother will give him some money for his coin bank. Chen also leads his classmates in doing the same.

In the next report, we meet Nantou Tzu Chi volunteer, Ceng Linli 曾玲麗who has been a part of the Tzu Chi media team for the past 8 years. The devoted volunteer is never absent from any Tzu Chi activities. However, after been diagnosed with thyroid cancer in April and undergoing surgery, Ceng now cherishes every opportunity to give even more. Despite still feeling weak, the devoted volunteer insisted on taking part in this year”s Buddha Day ceremony.

We go to New Jersey in the United States at the end of the show today. In May each year, the local Tzu Chi Academy School organizes a field trip for their students. This year, the excursion is made more special as the youngster join in the fundraising event organized by the New Jersey Tzu Chi Chapter, to help with cleaning the site. Students not only pick up rubbish from the ground, but also call on the participants to help safeguard the planet. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for joining us. Goodbye.

The Watyuan community of Thailand”s Bangkok is home to low-income families from the countryside or even Myanmar, who hope to reverse their fortunes at the Thai capital. Unfortunately, a fire earlier in the month shattered many of these families” dreams. Tzu Chi volunteers promptly arrived and handed out emergency cash and relief supplies to 66 families.

More fire relief related reports but from the Philippines. Earlier in the month, a fire broke out in Marikina City and on the 11th, another fire broke out in Manila”s Tondo District. Though Tzu Chi volunteers were busy with the large scale Buddha Day ceremony for over 10,000 people on May 13, they still made time and delivered aid and love to these fire victims without delay.

Linwood College in Christchurch, New Zealand, suffered gravely from the major earthquake of last year. Local Tzu Chi volunteers have been bringing care to the school since the immediate aftermath of the disaster, and beginning last May, providing weekly lunches to needy students.

Also caring for students in need; in Las Vegas, the United States, Tzu Chi volunteers have been lending their support to needy students at John S Park Elementary, by distributing food backpacks before weekends, so children won”t have to go hungry when they are away from school. Recently volunteers held a thank-you party for teachers for their assistance with the meal scheme.

Love”s true power comes from its purity.

In China”s Xiamen, Tzu Chi volunteers visit families under their care on a monthly basis. Since Mother”s Day was recently celebrated, volunteers also remembered to bring carnations to those moms who have been caring for their disabled children. But first, volunteers visited the ”Lianhua Aixin” Nursing Home for the very first time to care for the seniors there.

Taipei Tzu Chi volunteer Weng-Xu Suzhen(翁許素貞), is a breast cancer patient, and also suffers from heart and muscle disorders. The multiple diseases once left the woman depressed. Luckily, it was then she met Tzu Chi and after seeing those in greater needs, the woman no longer complained about her life. Instead, Weng-Xu Suzhen learned to cherish every opportunity to give. She also took part in this year”s Buddha Day ceremony.

Eight year-old Xie Yaojin of Taiwan”s Hualien lost his father to an illness last year. Left in his grandparents” care, the young boy came to know Tzu Chi as his grandma is currently under training to become a volunteer. Taken under the wing of the Tzu Chi family, the young boy remains optimistic and outgoing and has taken an interest in photography.

On Charity

People in need help bodhisattvas cultivate their spirituality, which is accomplished through the process of giving. Tzu Chi”s charity mission has spread to all corners of the world and needs to follow the global standards.

In our continuing reports on the lives of volunteers in Japan, we again take our viewers to Tokyo where we meet Yoshikyouko Senga. As the wife of an orthopedic hospital”s superintendent, Mrs. Senga was inspired by her mother to join Tzu Chi and was transformed by the charity”s post 3/11 relief missions.

Now for some environmental news, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Tzu Chi volunteer Xu Meiling(許美玲) began sorting recyclables in her own garage in 2010. As more and more recyclables made their way to Xu”s house, she had to relocate her little recycling point to an empty plot of land next to her shop, where her employees also helped out. Before that, we go to Durban, where recently volunteers took to the streets to promote conservation and how vegetarianism can help secure a more sustainable future.

311 students recently graduated from the Cengkareng Da Ai School in Jakarta. As a way to say thanks, the graduates started practicing the Sutra of Profound Gratitude Towards Parents since March in order to show off the lessons they have learned regarding filial piety.

Also wanting to honor their mothers and show their gratitude, students of Xizhi Elementary School in New Taipei City served food to their moms with the help of Tzu Chi”s Da Ai Mothers. We join this loving event at the end of today”s program. Thank you for watching. Goodbye.

Beneath the burly physique

Dual purpose sweeper

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Leeway Tsai. Thank you for joining us.

We start the show with our featured reports on male nurses working in Tzu Chi Hospitals around Taiwan, who are every bit as caring and sensitive as their female counterparts. Today we meet 6-foot tall Lv Zonglong(呂宗隆) who is currently serving at the Dalin(大林) Tzu Chi Hospital. Lv”s strong build and masculine appearance often has patients wonder whether or not he can do his job well. However, it doesn”t take long for Lv”s patients to realize that he is a warm and kind soul who is very professional in his chosen career.

In today”s installment of our continuing series ”The Power of Love” we once again go back to that fateful day of March 11, which forever changed so many people”s lives in Japan. The destruction wrought by the earthquake and tsunami on that day not only lead to a huge loss of life, but also destroyed many families financially. Now, more than a year later, some victims are still jobless and homeless, and have taken to living on the street. As of January this year , there were over 9,000 homeless reported living in Japan, with 2000 of them in Tokyo alone. Tzu Chi and its local helpers have been working to help this situation. Among them is Yasu Otsuka, a native of Tokyo who has been helping those forced to live on the street find a measure of comfort in their difficult lives.

Back to Taiwan, Tzu Chi volunteers have also extended a warm hand to the needy in offshore island of Penghu, by distributing relief supplies regularly every month. On the day of the distribution this month, volunteers also helped take the blood pressure of care recipients. A simple Buddha Day ceremony was then held so all could share in the Buddha”s blessings.

Still in Taiwan but moving to Taichung, Tzu Chi volunteers have been caring for 93-year-old deaf-mute senior Liu-Ye Ai (劉葉愛) through home visitations in the past four years. Since the senior couldn”t speak nor hear, volunteers have been communicating with her through sign language. The constant supply of love and support from the caregivers inspired happiness in the senior, who decided to save money to help those who are less fortunate.

Simplicity is beauty.

Nowadays brooms are mostly made from plastic, but in the past, they were made from tying leaves or twigs together. We now introduce you to one of these traditional brooms that originated in southern Taiwan, which has a stunning title, ”The Heaven and Earth Sweeper.”

As we saw in the last story, few people in Linyuan District”s Linnei still remember how to make the ”Heaven and Earth Sweeper”. To keep the old art alive, a local school decided to teach its charges how to make the broom, a lesson which the children enjoyed.

On Vows

With the world in turmoil, there should be a force to help restore harmony, stability, and balance to the world. To bring salvation to the world is not a foolish and unrealistic dream for it only has to begin with you and me. With everyone working and pledging together, we will have the strength to realize such a dream.

Tzu Chi volunteers in Thailand have been going around schools in Bangkok to locate and help every student who is struggling to pay tuition fees. With Tzu Chi”s financial assistance, students can better focus on their studies, and their parents or legal guardians also have one less expense to worry about. Student aid recipients also took part in the Buddha Day celebrations in Bangkok, where they came to better understand the importance of appreciating what they already have in life.

In Vietnam, Tzu Chi volunteer organized two Buddha Day ceremonies. One took place at the Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Binh Duong Province, the other at the Taipei School in Ho Chi Minh City. Both of these celebrations happened on the same day, which means that volunteers had to rush from one place to the other in order to put together the events for more than 400 people in two different locations. Regardless of the distance and time pressure, it was a task volunteers willingly undertook.

Still on the topic of Buddha Day ceremony, in Muar, Malaysia, two Tzu Chi Buddha Day ceremonies were held this year. Altogether, more than 2000 participants joined the celebrations. This was also the first time dharma masters were invited to take part.

At the end of the show, we go to Singapore, where Tzu Chi volunteers organized a special event for children, aged 10-12, to show their gratitude to their parents in action. There were many tear-jerking moments for the moms and dads, who were extremely moved by their children” affectionate gesture. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

Tzu Chi”s post disaster relief missions in Japan after the 3/11 disaster would not have happened so quickly and smoothly without the help of former Iwate Prefecture Assembly member Ms. Yoko Miura. On Wednesday, Ms. Miura visited Master Cheng Yen in Hualien, to thank the Tzu Chi foundation for its ceasless efforts to help her country rebuild after last year”s triple disaster.

In today”s installment of our series ”Power of Love” we return to Japan to hear the story of Tzu chi volunteer Harue Mochizuki, a Taiwanese immigrant in Japan. As Ms. Mochizuki”s husband is ill and is unable to work, the family lives constantly on the edge of poverty. However, Ms. Mochizuki still spends what little free time she has to help out at the Tokyo Tzu Chi Office.

Male nurses are on the rise. In the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, the head nurse of the Emergency Room, Huang Junchao(黃俊朝) speaks about the pros and cons of being a male nurse, in the next report.

Sincerity in relationships begins with respect and gratitude.

In the olden days before the invention of electricity, candles were the main source of lighting at night. Over time, candles have grown out of their practical uses to become decorations, emergency lighting, and even an ambience enhancer. In our featured series on Taiwan”s weird and wonderful trades, today we look at a candle making factory in Miaoli that has time and again survived competition from home and abroad. Rather than relocating his business to China to cut down on costs, factory owner Chen Guosheng insisted on staying in Taiwan, and found new opportunities for his business by turning his plant into a tourist attraction.

Chen Guosheng”s candle plant in fact started out as a glass factory that took a completely different turn after a client requested that he put candles into glass containers, some 30 years ago. Over the years, Chen”s business bobbed up and down against the competition, but he persevered, and always found a way to overcome his challenges. The self-made 67-year-old has an unconquerable spirit that he hopes to pass on to his son to keep their family business alive.

Paving the Way

A spiritual cultivation ground should help pave the way to enlightenment accessible to all. In Taiwan, Tzu Chi”s place of origin, volunteers call on citizens to reflect on themselves and empower the world to make a difference.

Last year, Guatemala was hit by severe flooding after days of heavy rain. To help the victims, volunteers held several relief distributions, which touched the hearts of many. Recently, on Buddha Day, local residents showed up at Tzu Chi”s celebrations to pray for a world without disasters.

The Tzu Chi Buddha Day ceremony in Singapore saw nearly 10,000 people. 1,700 volunteers came together to present various Buddhist patterns in group formations. Some of these performers were medical personnel or entrepreneurs who took time out from their tight schedules to help spread the positive message behind Buddha Day.

This year”s Mother”s Day is a special one for Tzu Chi volunteer Xu Shuyun (許淑雲)who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, while she was taking part in the musical rendition of the Water Repentance Sutra. After receiving chemotherapy, Xu made a full recovery and was able to attend the recent Buddha Day ceremony.

At the Tzu Chi Buddha Day ceremony in Suzhou, China, volunteer Zhang Tao braved the recent loss of her beloved husband to join the celebrations. In the past, the couple used to volunteer happily together. Now, though her husband is no longer around, Zhang knows that he is with her in spirit, as she continues to serve Tzu Chi.

First up in the show, since 1996, Tzu Chi volunteers in Jiangxi, China have been working to support students from poor families with school subsidies and scholarships. Many of these underprivileged younsters have grown up and started their own families. At the recent Buddha Day ceremony in Suzhou, two of these former scholarship recipients were in attendance, bringing with them a heart of thanks for their mother”s love, as well as the Tzu Chi Foudation that helped them in the past.

Next year, the Buddha Day ceremony in Suzhou will be moved from the local Jing Si Books and Cafe to the new Tzu Chi grounds, giving organizers more space to bring the Dharma to even more people. We now go back in time, to take a look at how the Buddha Day celebrations have evolved in Suzhou, beginning in 2006.

For many, to be able to take part in Tzu Chi”s Buddha Day ceremony and pay homage to the Buddha is simply something they must do. In Malacca, Malaysia, a senior wanted to join the ceremony but missed the event by taking the wrong bus. Fortunately, volunteers were there to help the senior fulfill her wish.

In the face of difficulty, just wholeheartedly do our best with all our strength and effort.

In Taiwan, nursing programs are available in technical colleges, universities, and career schools. In the past, these schools only accepted female candidates to their programs; however, as times have changed, more and more male candidates are being accepted. Here is our report.

We meet Song Rangxuan(宋穰烜) from Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, who is the only male nurse at the surgical ICU. Song has been in the profession for more than six years, has proven to be just as attentive and caring as his female counterparts, if not more.

In the second part of ”The Power of Love” series from Japan, we travel to Tokyo to meet volunteer couple, Liao Jinqi(廖金旂) and Zhang Laihao(張來好), who are both Taiwanese living and working in the city. The two met in Tzu Chi, and have been devoting themselves selflessly to service work especially after the March 11 triple disaster. Let”s take a look.

《 衲履足跡 》On Purity and Sincerity 談「清淨」和「用心」

Abiding Buddhist precepts can be challenging because one can be easily swayed and influenced. Like giving sermons, chanting Buddhist sutra requires utmost concentration which helps prevent from deviating on to the wrong path.

We bring you more reports on Buddha Day, this time from Ottawa, Missisauga, and Richmond in Canada, where people of different cultural backgrounds came together for the annual celebration.

At Taipei”s main Buddha Day celebration in the CKS Memorial Hall, 11th grader Li Jiahua (李佳樺) could be found among the crowd, taking part on behalf of her mother, who is a polio sufferer with limited mobility. We find out what brought the mother and daughter pair into Tzu Chi.

Go to any temple in Taiwan and you”ll notice that many of the god statues come with headgears such as a hat or a crown. In today”s report on the island”s traditional trades, we meet 74-year-old Lin Qifeng(林啟豐), who is a master in making these unique headdresses. His two sons have followed in his footsteps and have also gone on to become great craftsmen in their own right.

We go back to Canada at the end of the show, for the Tzu Chi Buddha Day ceremony in Toronto, where a fun fair was also held to promote stronger parent-child relationships, as well as environmentalism. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

Buddha Day ceremony in Marikina

This year, Tzu Chi volunteers from the Philippines held their Buddha day ceremony in the Marikina Sports Stadium. Apart from government officials, religious leaders from different organizations also arrived to participate. This was also the first time volunteers organized for participants to stand in Tzu Chi logo, lotus flower and bodhi leaf formations.

Rice distribution after ceremony

Following the Buddha Day ceremony in the Philippines, Tzu Chi volunteers also held a rice distribution where they handed out 20-kilo bags of rice to some 9,831 families. The joint event not only helped residents gain dharma joy, but also filled their hearts with Tzu Chi”s love and blessings.

Coast to coast Buddha Day

In the next report, we bring you Tzu Chi”s Buddha Day celebrations all the way from the east to the west coast of the United States, where Tzu Chi volunteers in New York, Houston, Dallas, San Jose, San Francisco and San Dimas put their efforts together for a memorable day for local residents of all ethnicities and faiths. Apart from the ceremony , volunteers in North Caliafornia also set up a game area, to promote the concepts of conservation work and vegetarianism, and encourage the participants to only eat 80 percent full.

Buddha Day at San Dimas

Staying in the United States, at the US Tzu Chi Headquarters in San Dimas, California, some 80 TIMA members brought their family along to participate in the local Buddha Day ceremony. Free dental checkups and weight-loss consultations were also made available, to attract more public participation. Tzu Chi volunteers were also on site to promote organ and bone marrow donation as well.

Only through the challenges encountered in human affairs is a gentle heart cultivated.

Buddha Day Ceremony in Yangon

Back in Asia, Tzu Chi”s Buddha Day ceremony was held for the fourth consecutive year in Myanmar with some 4,000 people in attendance. Among the participant, volunteer Lin Jihua(林濟化), joined the event despite suffering from cancer.

Over 7,000 join Buddha Day

The next story takes us to Indonesia, Tzu Chi volunteers chose to hold this year”s Buddha Day ceremony outside Jakarta”s Jing Si Hall. Volunteers only expected 5,000 people to take part, however, some 7,000 turned up to join the tri-celebration, taking the participation of the Buddhist ceremony to a new level.

Scholarship recipients join Tzu Chi

To some people, garbage may just be garbage, but to Tzu Chi volunteers, recycling turns garbage to gold, and gold helps run charity work. Recently, a group of students receiving Tzu Chi scholarships in North Jakarta, joined in the recycling efforts, to learn where their scholarships came from. Let”s take a look.

Faithfulness

Doing good brings good karma; however, if we are always looking for something in return, it will lead to unnecessary disappointments. Doing charity work with no ulterior motives guarantees a peace of mind at the end of the day.

The Power of Love

When the earthquake and tsunami hit the northeast coast of Japan on March 11 last year, it not only wiped entire towns off the map, but took the lives of some 15,000 Japanese people. Those that survived often had to go on living with the devastating loss of their family members. In our new six-part series of feature reports, ”The Power of Love”, we travel to Japan to follow the lives of families that are struggling with the loss of loved ones and the normal, stable life that they once knew. In the first of our series we meet Zhang Jun張君, who lives in the City of Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture. Zhang Jun”s daughter was lost along with 73 of her classmates from Okawa Elementary School when the tsunami hit the town. With her daughter dead and her husband out of work, Zhang Jun felt like she had nothing to live for. Fortunately, she was lucky enough to meet Tzu Chi who infused her life and that of her husband, with new purpose and hope.

People living in solitude are always forgotten in times of festive celebrations. Thus, prior to the Buddha Day ceremony in Taipei, Tzu Chi volunteers visited a few elderly people who have trouble moving about and were unable to attend the event. Volunteers thoughtfully held a simple ceremony inside the senior residents” homes, and also provided hair cut services. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. 1.
This past Sunday, May 13th, was not only Mother”s Day but also Tzu Chi”s Buddha Day and Global Tzu Chi Day. Across the globe, Tzu Chi offices in 34 countries held a total of 326 ceremonies which were attended by over 300,000 people. We now take you to the celebration at Taipei”s Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, where about 30,000 people participated in three rounds of ceremonies. The event was also attended by dharma masters, community leaders, government officials, and foreign dignitaries.

Many elements helped make Tzu Chi”s Buddha Day ceremony at Taipei”s Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall on Sunday a success. What people might not have noticed was the wheatgrass normally used to decorate the venue in the past was switched to catnip this year. We tell you why.

The Philippines Tzu Chi Chapter held their first large scale Buddha Day ceremony for over 10,000 people at the Marikina Sports Stadium. As part of their celebration for Mother”s Day, volunteers also organized a foot bath area, with the city”s mayor being one of the many to give their parents a foot spa.

Staying in the Philippines, on the day of Tzu Chi Buddha Day celebration, one of its streets in Marikina City was also officially renamed ”Tzu Chi Street”, in honor of the Buddhist NGO”s contribution to the city in the aftermath of Typhoon Ketsana in 2009. We now join the renaming ceremony.

Forging harmonious relationships in daily living requires that we be flexible and accommodating when upholding our principles.

Now more Tzu Chi Buddha Day celebrations overseas. In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 8000 people came together at Stadium Bola Sepak to also celebrate Mother”s Day and the 46th anniversary of Tzu Chi. The ceremony was opened by more than 70 religious leaders, and the audience prayed for a world without disasters.

This year”s Buddha Day ceremony is Suzhou was attended by 1800 volunteers from Suzhou, Wuxi, Changshou常熟, Hangzhou杭州, Wuhan武漢 and other cities. Regardless of where they came from, however, participants were alike in the deep reverence they brought to the ceremony. Although the inside location was smaller than other venues around the world, it did not detract from the essence of the ceremony which was a moving experience for all those in attendance.

We now take you to Australia to check out Tzu Chi”s Buddha Day ceremony in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane. In Sydney the ceremony was held at Kwan Yin Temple in Cabramatta and also outdoor at Eastwood Plaza where it drew passersby who made donations to Tzu Chi. But first to the celebration in Brisbane.

The second Sunday of May is Mother”s Day, and many celebrated by taking their moms out to dinner. However, doing what they do on any other day, a group of mothers in Kaohsiung”s Daliao 大寮District spent the day sorting recyclables. Over the past 2 years, the group of recycling volunteers went from four to nearly the whole neighborhood, who are now all devoting themselves happily and unconditionally to conservation work.

On Sunday, May 13, Tzu Chi”s global tri-celebration of Buddha Day, Mother”s Day and Global Tzu Chi Day began in Hualien, Taiwan, where 3,648 dharma masters, volunteers, and Tzu Chi Foundation staff came together for a formal ceremony at the local Jing Si Hall. From bird”s eye view, the participants stood in Bodhi leaf and dharma vessels formations. The night before the celebration, many volunteers stayed up and worked till the early hours to put the finishing touches on the venue. We now join the ceremony in Hualien, the first in this year”s global celebration, where Master Cheng Yen was also present to observe the Buddhist festival.

Before we bring you more Buddha Day reports from around the world in the next couple of days, today we have one from Canada, where a joint Buddha Day ceremony was held for residents from the cities of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody. Coquitlam”s mayor Richard Steward also came to the event.

In the Philippines, businesswoman Huang Xiuzhu decided to make donations to Tzu Chi after she saw news reports of Buddha Day ceremony and posters about the event. Although she is a Christian, she said there is no religious difference when it comes to supporting good deeds.

Wisdom is cultivated by freeing our minds from distractions, and adopting an optimistic and pragmatic attitude in all that we do.

May 13th is also Mother”s Day. Recently the Taiping Elementary School Kindergarten in Taipei, in cooperation with Tzu Chi, held a Mother”s Day event for parents, where children served their parents tea and cookies before giving them hugs and kisses to thank them for their support. Both parents and children learned that it is never too early or late to say ”I love you.”

We now introduce you to a very special group of women who, despite being advanced in age, have extended their motherly love to bring their community closer together. They are the women of Shanlin Da Ai Community, in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

In Malaysia, early in the morning on May 7th, a flood occurred in Batang Kali, in the north of Kuala Lumpur, after a river flooded due to nonstop heavy downpour the night before. The low lying areas around the river were almost instantly submerged. As local residents were sound asleep when the flood struck, most of them fled their homes without taking along any valuables or belongings. Two days later, Tzu Chi volunteers from Kuala Lumpur arrived at the inundated village, and completed a thorough disaster survey, and the distribution of emergency cash and blankets, all within just a few hours.

On self-love

Committing suicide is a form of killing. Be grateful to your parents for giving you life, cherish it, and make good use of it to create more blessings. To love yourself is a way to repay your parents” love.

In the final part of Life”s Revelations, we went to an animal shelter to speak to a staff who offers a thought provoking view on why animals deserve the same respect and rights that humans enjoy. Huang Xuanzhen is a young woman who works at the Animal Protection Association in Taiwan. Her daily routine includes cleaning, feeding and training stray dogs, which, in the eyes of many, is a laborious and often thankless job. Many people have wondered why a college-graduate like her has chosen this path. We hear what the animal lover has to say.

Tzu Chi in the Philippines is holding its first ever large-scale Buddha Day Ceremony in the country. Altogether 10,000 participants have gathered to take part. However, it was only until Deng”s son joined Tzu Chi”s basketball team that she reconnected with the organization. Last year, Deng finally became a Tzu Chi commissioner, and this year, she is bringing her whole family to take part in the Buddha Day ceremony.

《 衲履足跡 》 On Preaching A Sermon 談傳道

In Today”s society, it is easy for children to adopt bad habits. It is the teacher”s mission to teach students moral and ethical values. When students look neat, it is because they have truly absorbed the dharma into their hearts.

In the third part of our featured series, Life”s Revelations, today we introduce to you a highway engineer who became an advocate of ecological engineering. 1.

First up, in March, the US state of Ohio was devastated by tornadoes. Although Tzu Chi volunteers conducted a disaster survey in the hard-hit village of Moscow, the extent of the devastation meant they were unable to find a venue to hold the distribution. On May 5th, volunteers returned to Moscow to hand out cash cards, daily necessities and hugs to residents.

Trying their best to reach out to the needy, Tzu Chi volunteers in Australia are also doing that by holding free clinics in the town of Tara, in Queensland, with or without funding from the government. Volunteers in Brisbane canvassed donations to put together the latest 3-day Tzu Chi dental clinic in Tara. One local nurse also offered great help by finding a venue for the much-awaited health event.

Engage in positive speech, refrain from gossiping.

International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12th in Taiwan. At Dalin Tzu Chi hospital, Tzu Chi volunteers and patients” family members came together to prepare delicious food to thank the nurses for their hard work.

Meanwhile, Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital is also celebrating International Nurses Day by handing out awards to nurses for their oustanding work, as well as dedicating a corridor to exhibit the profiles of each award winner.

Also at Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital, we meet Chen Yifang, a nurse who chose to serve needy patients in remote eastern Taiwan instead of looking for better job opportunities in bigger cities.

The Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, now seven years old, is best known for its energy saving efforts. One of the best ways to be energy efficient, as the hospital”s engineers can tell you, is to fine tune the air conditioning units several times a day so that they perform at optimal efficiency. In doing so, over the past five years, the hospital has saved around 170,000 USD annually on electricity bills.

On Keeping The Precepts

Tzu Chi volunteers need to abide by Tzu Chi”s ten precepts. If we have a healthy lifestyle we don”t need to be disciplined. The purpose of the ten percepts is to eliminate bad habits and to protect our physical and spiritual health.

In our series on Life”s Revelations, today we speak to sixth grader, Cai Haihao. Though his father has oral cancer and diabetes and his mother suffers severe depression, Haihao has stepped up to the plate to take care of family chores while still attending school. He was recently recognized by the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families for his dedication to his parents. Even though Haihao”s classmates often ridicule him about his ”dysfunctional family”, the mature boy is grateful for all he has.

The next story takes us to Selangor, Malaysia, to meet Xiao Yaxian (蕭亞賢), whose exemplary frugalness is a result of poverty in her childhood years. A story she saw on Da Ai TV about poor Burmese farmers who give away rice to the needy has prompted Xiao and her family to lead an even simpler lifestyle.

Moving to Taiwan, teacher Luo Meili was a rebellious young woman, who once traveled abroad without notifying her parents. The result? Silent treatment from her father for three years. Now a volunteer at Tzu Chi Teachers Association, as Meili rehearsed for the Buddha Day ceremony, she regrets her past behaviors and hopes to honor her parents through service work.

We start today”s program in the United States. For the past 5 years, Tzu Chi Dallas Chapter has been holding free clinic twice a year, to aid local residents without medical insurance. This time TIMA doctors were joined by the Texas Chinese Doctors Association. Together they provided a range of services including gynecology, pediatrics, Chinese medicine, as well as health check. Let”s take a look.

In Christchurch City of New Zealand, after last year”s earthquake Tzu Chi volunteers promised to provide lunch for less fortunate students in Linwood High School once a week starting from this month. The first time, Tzu Chi volunteers from Christchurch and the New Zealand Chapter brought along vegetarian burgers. The students were very happy and agreed to go meatless.

We go to Asia for our next report, volunteers in Indonesia”s Tangerang traveled to four townships to deliver rice to the poor and needy. Some are elders without children to look after them, while others are single moms trying to raise a family. Regardless of their background, most of them live from meal to meal and Tzu Chi”s aid is their first step to getting out of poverty.

It takes wisdom not to inflict suffering on others when oneself is suffering.

The next story takes us to Malaysia, for several years now, Tzu Chi volunteers across Malaysia come together every May, to carry out a vegetarian campaign in their communities. Starting from last year, volunteers have asked local vegetarian restaurants to join the cause, and this year not only has the number of participating restaurants increased, so has the amount of participants, which include Chinese, Malaysians, and Indians.

Staying in Malaysia, Ve-sak Day is Buddhism”s holiest Day, celebrating the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha. This is the time when grand festivals are held in various parts of South East Asia and South Asia. Recently, Tzu Chi volunteers joined a float parade held in Malacca, to promote the concept of eating 80 percent full.

This week Sunday will be Mother”s Day and apart from showing gratitude to your mom, is there anyone else you would like to thank? Starting from today, we begin a series of reports based on 4 different people. Through listening to their life-stories, and meeting the person or things that changed their life, we gain a deeper understanding to the value and meaning of life. The first person we meet is well-known wheelchair dancer, Lin Xiuxia(林秀霞), who inspired many around her with her passion for dancing. What many people may not know, is that the seeming-ly optimistic Xiuxia, once contemplated suicide when her husband left her for another woman and so has her children. Let”s hear how Lin overcome her challenges in life.

The Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital celebrated its seventh anniversary yesterday. In the next story, we meet a volunteer at the hospital, who received a heart transplant there two years ago. Grateful for a second chance at life, the heart recipient Zhang Qingjiang(張清江) signed up for volunteer training and now devotes his time, to helping patients find the courage to face and fight their illnesses.

On Cherishing Karma Connection

Every year Tzu Chi celebrates the three special festivals and remembers the three

Graces (the grace of Buddha, our parents and others). However; the Master said we should be grateful every day and remind ourselves to cherish affinity and integrate the Buddha”s teachings into our daily lives.

In today”s look at Taiwan”s traditional industry, we visit a group of float makers in Beigang, who help make the annual Mazu parade come alive. The float is called ”Yige”藝閣 for it should embody master craftsmanship and poetry. Though many of the floats nowadays are mass produced, these artisans are committed, to making their floats manually to keep the tradition alive. Here”s more.

With Mother”s Day just a few days away, Da Ai mothers put on a short play for students at Kaohsiung”s Yangming Elementary School about our mothers” love and devotion. Volunteers also encouraged the students to show their gratitude towards their moms through Jing Si aphorisms, and inspired them to be grateful to all living beings as well. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

A life changing car accident

First up in the show, we have a report from Australia on a young Taiwanese man who was injured in an auto accident during his working holiday in the country. Kuo Tingyu(郭庭瑜) from Taiwan went to Australia a year ago to explore new opportunities; however, a road accident cut short his trip, and caused a great deal of pain for him and his family. Thankfully, with Tzu Chi volunteers” help, they were able to turn their thoughts into positive thinking.

Helping seniors celebrate Buddha Day

Moving to Taiwan, as Buddha Day and Mother”s Day are less than two weeks away, Tzu Chi volunteers in Hualien have started visiting local nursing homes to celebrate the festivals with the seniors who are unable to make it to the main venue.

Taking baby steps when raising children

In our featured series, ”One Step Ahead”, yesterday we looked at some of the best ways to help school-age children grow intellectually and emotionally according to the development of the brain. Today, our focus shifts to infants and toddlers between the ages of one and three, a period when the brain grows at its most rapid pace. Toddlers explore the world through their senses, and the stimulation they receive greatly aids the development of neural connections, and hence their intelligence. We speak to experts in neuroscience and child psychology to better understand how best to help toddlers reach their full potential.

The love of a taxi driver

Mr. Yang is a Tzu Chi care recipient living in Taichung, Taiwan. A taxi driver by trade, Mr. Yang made enough to get by. However, at 35, diabetes took his right leg, after which he was required to receive weekly dialysis treatments. As his meager income was unable to cover his medical costs, Tzu Chi stepped in to help. Now Yang is once again driving his cab and helping others as a way to give back.

Taiwan once called the banana kingdom

In our featured report on Taiwan”s sunset trades, today we”ll be looking at the fading industry of banana farming and the farmers behind it. In 1963, Taiwan”s bananas were widely exported to Japan. In the ensuing 10 years, banana farming became one of the most important industries in Taiwan, earning the country considerable amounts of foreign exchange. Back in the golden age, mountains were filled with banana farms which earned Taiwan the title of Banana kingdom. Let”s take a look.

Music band helps raise awareness

75-year-old Lv Ming, whom we met in the last story, has seen the rise and fall of the banana industry in his hometown of Qishan, and witnessed how young people moved away one after another in search of better business opportunities. To the delight of Lv Ming and other banana farmers like him, several local young men came together and formed a band, hoping to use music to revive Qishan”s banana culture.
