Tzu Chi Teachers Association in Taiwan has long been promoting the teaching of Jing Si aphorisms - Master Cheng Yen”s insights on life - in schools. Recently a team of delegates from the association went to Malaysia, to share with local teachers, and school headmasters, how they use Jing Si aphorisms in Taiwanese schools, and the results thereof.

Moving to South Africa, Tzu Chi volunteers in Johannesburg recently paid a visit to the Frank Mynhardt Care Center in Brakpan. Volunteers did not forget to bring some daily necessities and other gifts for the seniors, but they could see that their presence at the home made an even bigger difference for the elderly residents.

One of the ways to bring more joy into life is to have a dream and go for it. In Taichung, Taiwan, restaurant owner, Lin Jilong(林基龍) has been running a successful business for over 20 years. Before he turned 40, Lin took a week to transform his restaurant by taking meat off his menu and go all vegetarian. Although business went downhill in the beginning, Lin and his wife did not give up- thanks to the inspiration from Da Ai TV.

What goes into our mouth truly does affect our health. For example, gout is one of the many diseases caused by an unbalanced diet. Though the type of food a gout patient can eat, has widened in selection, doctors still remind patients to eat everything in moderation.

Too much of any kind of food can be bad for you, especially if it contains preservatives. Certain chemicals can help keep food fresh, and free from germs that make it go bad. However, preservatives can be harmful to human health if they are eaten in large amounts. In today”s in-depth look at what goes into our processed food, we explore the volatile issue of chemical preservatives.

45-year-old Tzu Chi volunteer Chen Yuyu(陳宇昱) spent years fighting oral cancer. Eight years ago a car accident left him paralyzed from the waist down, as well as bringing his cancer out of remission. Severely depressed and even suicidal, five years ago Chen found his savior in a drawing class at the Jing Si Hall in Taoyuan, Taiwan. Recently, the Hall hosted an exhibition of Chen”s pieces that tells the story of his heroic determination.

Next, we have a heartwarming story from Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Mr. Zhang runs a recycling station, and lives frugally, so that he can take a good care of his daughter, who is in a vegetative state. The caring father fixes broken home appliances, and take what is still in working order to be used as parts for another machine. Recently, he donated several of his restored fans to the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation, as a gesture of thanks for providing assistance to his daughter.

Tzu Chi”s musical adaptation of the Water Repentance Sutra is scheduled for three showings in March, in Hualien, Taiwan. As cast members continue to practice for the upcoming performances, workers at the local Tzu Chi Hospital, who couldn”t make it to the practice sessions, received private lessons.

Everyday, fifth grader Cai Peizhen(蔡佩真) takes care of her wheelchair-bound twin brother who suffers from muscular dystrophy. Since their father died in a work-related accident two years prior, Cai Peizhen is now responsible for helping her brother eat, go to the bathroom, and do his homework. Despite the difficulty of their life, the determination of the two children has made them role models for many.

15 years ago, Mr. Zeng from Zhuolan Township in Miaoli County lost four red envelopes carrying the gift money for his son”s wedding, without knowing it. Recently the money was found at a Tzu Chi recycling station among the castoffs. Volunteers contacted the police, and got the long lost red envelops safely home.

Like the teachers at the beginning of the show, who were actively promoting Jing Si aphorisms in Malaysian schools, Hong Kong Tzu Chi volunteers have been going around shops, with posters of the words of wisdom. After gaining consent from the proprietors, the volunteers put up the posters, as food for thought for shoppers. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Leeway Tsai. Thank you for joining us. Coming up in the show today, in Indonesia, Tzu Chi”s joint charity clinic with a local hospital provides free cataract, harelip and hernia surgery for the poor. The threat of osteoporosis becomes a reality once you hit 30- especially for women. But the disease can be prevented through regular exercising and a calcium rich diet. Are you eating real food? In our special report on the health risks of chemical additives later, we find out how artificial flavoring is fooling our taste buds.

In Indonesia”s Bogor city, TIMA and the local Sentra Medika hospital teamed up to hold a free clinic in Cibinong community, where the average income is low. In addition to regular checkups, operations were performed to treat cataracts, cleft lips and hernias. Many of the participating doctors were inspired to become TIMA members.

On the day of the clinic in Cibinong, a set of twins, who were born with hernias, were brought in for surgery. Unfortunately, the eldest child was sick, and could not join his brother in getting an operation. In Indonesia, treating hernia costs 1,000 USD, which is something that the twin family cannot afford. Volunteers promised to come back in six months to finish the job.

At the New Year”s blessing ceremony held by the Tzu Chi liaison office in Vietnam”s Ho Chi Minh City, participants learned more about the Buddhist charity. Commissioners, who were recently certified in Taiwan, went on stage to share their insights; segments of the Water Repentance musical were also performed at the event.

Life is valuable only to the extent that it is used.

February 22nd is Nutritionists Day in Taiwan. At the Tzu Chi Hospital in Hualien, nutritionists were asked to be creative, and come up with delicious treats made from ingredients that are normally discarded. The dishes were demonstrated to the public to encourage them to make the best use of our resources.

Bone thinning is a natural aging process that begins after about 30, and if you do nothing about it, will eventually lead to osteoporosis. Women, especially, need to keep a balanced diet, exercise regularly, limit alcohol consumption and refrain from smoking to protect their bones. Here is an in-depth look.

Eating healthy means avoiding processed food that contains a lot of additives. Yesterday, we found out why artificial food colorings are so common in Taiwan. Today, we go back to the lab to learn how synthetic flavors are made. These days, a chemists can reproduce the taste and smell of virtually anything. Let”s find out how it is done.

On the Bodhisattva Path
We need to practice Buddhism in our daily lives by repenting and having a faithful mind.
We should remind ourselves not to hurt others with our words, and to love ourselves and benefit each other. By doing so, we will walk the bodhisattva path.

Jian Jinlong(簡錦龍) is the head-chef of a vegetarian restaurant, who went to college in Japan. Originally a manager of a construction company, Jian was asked by his parents to cook for their restaurant. It wasn”t easy for the well-educated man to give up his high-paid profession for a kitchen job, but now, he has no regrets.

At the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation nursing home, in Pingtung County, resident Mr. Lin is in a persistent vegetative state due to a stroke. Since he moved to the home five years ago, his wife has been paying him regular visits, and says she will take care of her husband for the rest of her life.

The next story takes us to meet one cancer fighter, Liu Decheng(劉德成) from Taichung. The 55-year-old, who was a bodybuilder and a swimming coach, began smoking and chewing betel nuts in his teens, and at the age of 43, he contracted oral cancer. Since then, he has undergone ten operations and 35 chemotherapy sessions. Liu also took up running to train his fitness and endurance, and became a model for others like him.

If you look around, polystyrene is everywhere: in food containers, packing materials, disposable cups, all of which may be very convenient for users, but are highly toxic for the environment. Fortunately, polystyrene can be recycled and reused to make other plastic products, as we shall see in our next report.

At the end of the show, staff of Hong Kong”s Security Workers General Union recently visited a Tzu Chi recycling station in Tai Wai, and through sorting the castoffs, learned that recycling is easier and more rewarding than it seems. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching.

Ms. Gou Xiaorong passed away

On Friday February 17th, last week, a bus carrying Chinese tourists overturned in Hualien”s Fengbin. Sadly one of the injured, Ms. Gou Xiaorong苟曉蓉, passed away, at Hualien Hospital, on Tuesday morning. Of the 25 other casualties, seven are in still in intensive care, and 18 are in regular wards, in four different local hospitals. Thankfully, they are all currently in a stable condition.

Storm victims touched by Tzu Chi

In late January, a series of tornados struck five US states, in the mid-south, causing property damage, injuries, and deaths. Tzu Chi volunteers from Atlanta, Georgia, immediately carried out a disaster survey, in Alabama, and recently returned with supplies and emergency cash, for the victims.

Teaching people to recycle

Last Sunday, the 2012 Taiwan Lantern Festival came to a successful conclusion after ten days. The event drew over 12 million visitors, and also created over 2,270 tons of trash. Tzu Chi volunteers were onsite to help recover 530 tons of recyclables.

Finding a balance between man & nature

Taiwan”s Lantern Festival, in Lugang Township, ended on Sunday. As we just saw, the 12 million visitors created a large amount of garbage. As well as collecting 530 tons of recyclables, Tzu Chi volunteers also set up a temporary office at the site, and went out with young students to try and encourage the public to eat more vegetarian food. A number of willing people signed up to the campaign, on the spot.

(2)100 percent juice - plus artificial dye

They say you are what you eat. But do the brightly colored artificial dyes, that are so common in processed foods and beverages, make children dull and irritable at school In today”s detailed look at food and health, we ask why food coloring is so common in Taiwan, and why consumers can”t be persuaded to buy naturally colored food.

Want some macarons?

We”ll have more food for thought tomorrow, but back to today, and for our feature story on ”pursuing simple dreams”, we go to Taichung, to meet a happy family of six. Both the mother and father are Tzu Chi volunteers, who ran a vegetarian restaurant for over 20 years. Now grown up, two of their daughters, Chen Yingting(陳穎婷) and Chen Yingqi(陳穎祺) decided to turn their parents” business into an eatery that offers Italian food and desserts - at an affordable price. Let”s take a look.

Don”t miss a stitch

Made from synthetic materials, raincoats come in an array of styles and colors. But the precursor, of this waterproof wear, in Taiwan, was the palm leaf rain cloak, which was the first choice on rainy days, more than half a century ago. Made from the fibers of palm leafstalks, the traditional Taiwanese raincoat is still being made, but only by a handful of people today. In our next story, we meet one of the last master craftsman, Mr. Wu Caota(吳草塔) from Hsinchu, who has been in the business for 26 years. Loyal customers keep coming back for his authentic handiwork. But with few other supporters, it is tough to keep his shop going. Let”s meet the man himself.

Once mass produced in Yunlin

It seems that there are two forces, at odds with each other, in the palm leaf raincoat industry, in Taiwan. On the one hand, skilled craftsmen, like Wu Caota, are considering quitting the trade; but on the other hand, people like scholar and researcher, Ye Zonghe(葉宗和), are going back to Yunlin -- which was once the center of the raincoat industry -- to preserve the tradition. Palm leaf cloaks were at the height of their popularity during Japanese colonial rule of Taiwan. The handmade raincoats were so much in demand that their sale had to be regulated. Practically everyone in Yunlin”s Shiguixi(石龜溪) district was involved in the industry, in one way or another. And in next story, we explore the rise, and fall of, and possible rise again, of palm leaf raincoats.

In our last piece today, we go to Hong Kong, to join Tzu Chi volunteers, on their monthly trip, to an old-aged people”s home. This time, the visitors entertained the elderly residents with the Chinese erhu instrument. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

In the small hours of Sunday morning, February 19th, a Thai cargo carrier was trapped on a reef just off Taiwan”s Penghu Islands. The stranded crew of 16 men sent out distress signals that were picked up by the Taiwanese Rescue Coordination Center, which then notified the air force base in Chiayi to send out helicopters. Luckily, the entire crew was successfully rescued and taken to Penghu”s Magong Airport for temporary shelter.

As soon as Penghu Tzu Chi volunteers learned of the Thai cargo ship that got into trouble after it struck a reef off Magong, they divided into teams to visit the victims of the disaster in the hospital and find clothes for them. The local Social Affairs Department also sent food to comfort the still shocked crew members.

Tzu Chi has once more come the aid of those in need. In Myanmar”s Tarmwe, about 30 minutes northeast of the capital city of Yangon, an electrical fire lead to the destruction of eight buildings, displacing 16 families or 72 people. Volunteers immediately responded to the news by bringing consolation cash and daily necessities for the victims, who found the presence of Tzu Chi to be immensely comforting.

Cambodia suffered from heavy rainfall last September and despite the fact that it is nearly six months later, in some areas the waters have not receded, leading to considerable hardship for residents. In December of last year, local Tzu Chi volunteers held an aid distribution in Chroy Changvar District. Recently, they returned once again to check on their old friends.

In the 1950s, when Kaohsiung”s Yanchen district was booming, it was the best place to buy a quality wristwatch. But as the city center shifted away from the area, the customers drifted away, and the stores started to close down. But in today”s feature on Taiwan”s sunset industries, we go back to Yanchen to meet a father and son pair who are still working together, like the minute and hour hands of a clock, to keep their family watch business ticking over.

As you just saw, repairing the tiny parts of a wristwatch or watch can damage your eyesight. But fixing bigger clocks can also be risky, as tightly coiled springs can fly out and hurt the repairman. One man who has the scars to prove it is about master clock repairman, Mr. Jiang Mengzong姜孟宗, who we meet in our next story.

Going paperless to minimize the impact on our environment is a global trend, and in support of the cause in southern Taiwan, over 600 Tzu Chi volunteers gathered in Kaohsiung to learn how to use the Tzu Chi e-book reader. Though many of the participants were seniors, they were eager to learn about the new technology.

Seniors in a nursing home in China”s Shanghai may not be brushing up on modern technology, but they sure had fun when local Tzu Chi volunteers dropped by for a visit and brought warmth and happiness to them.

Since 2011, Tzu Chi volunteers in South Africa have been giving financial aid to local students. Recently, the volunteers held a blessing ceremony at Chelsea Preparatory school, and invited the scholarship students to attend.

We kick off the show in Thailand, a country that has survived its worst flooding in half a century. Now, more than six months after the disaster, Tzu Chi”s efforts on behalf of the disaster victims continues unabated. Since mid-January, nearly 600 volunteers carried out distributions in 26 towns and villages throughout the central provinces of Nakhon Pathom and Ayutthaya, helping close to 2,000 households or 3,300 people recover.

Staying in Thailand, to get ready for a new year of charity work, Tzu Chi volunteers organized a two-day seminar, and took advantage of the chance to welcome some new blood into the organization.

University”s Department of Religious Studies is planning to establish a center dedicated to religious research. As part of their preparatory work, professors and students flew to Malaysia-- a country with diverse cultures and faiths-- for field research. The group of delegates also visited Tzu Chi”s Jing Si Hall and dialysis center in Penang to understand how the Buddhist NGO promotes its work overseas.

Social work students from Taiwan”s Tzu Chi University recently went to Indonesia on an educational tour. On Valentines” Day, they arrived in Cengkareng, in West Jakarta, to meet students from the local Tzu Chi School. Through a fun art lesson, the students - despite their age and language differences - connected with one another, marking another memorable episode in this overseas trip for the future social workers.

Moving to Xiamen, China, Tzu Chi care recipients all have different stories: some have been involved in car accidents and can no longer work, while others have suffered mental breakdowns from too much pressure. Regardless of the difficulties that they face, the one thing that unites them is their courage to walk on, and their faith that they can turn to Tzu Chi in times of need.

Truth is a road worth following.

In Taiwan, due to diet changes, which includes more refined and processed food, colorectal cancer is on the rise. As symptoms are not obvious till later stages, patients” survival rate has been low. Now, there is a new simpler and quicker screening method, that can help detect the disease early on.

In Taiwan”s Taichung, a middle aged man didn”t pay much attention to his constant dizziness, until he passed out and was sent to the Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, where doctors discovered a tumor in his stomach. Doctors say, due to unhealthy eating, gastrointestinal tumors are on the rise in Taiwan, so it is advised that people should eat more fresh vegetables and fruits, and go easy on seasoning to stay healthy.

There are about 600,000 people in Taiwan who have hepatitis C which is deadlier than hepatitis B, as the disease progresses much faster leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Though there is no vaccine for the viral disease, it is easier to treat than hepatitis B, and is completely curable. Now a new treatment can enhance the effectiveness of the traditional method by up to 30 percent.

On Doctors
Rich or poor, when we are in pain or struck by illness, we all need a doctor, who we hope will have the heart of the Buddha and the compassion of a bodhisattva.

When we choose to become a doctor, our compassion should be inspired, and we should be determined to stick to our mission of saving lives.

Japanese Tzu Chi volunteers recently held a blessing ceremony, in which those who suffered at the hands of the tsunami nearly a year ago, were invited to attend. Participants thanked Tzu Chi for its help, and many promised to help out at Tzu Chi events in the future.

Convenience stores in Taiwan have long worked with charity organizations, by keeping donation boxes on the shop counter. Now, a new fundraising campaign for children in need has come into being. Next time when you visit a convenience store, you can ask the sales attendant to take the change from your purchase and donate it to your preferred organization. The amount of your contribution will be stated on your receipt.

Tzu Chi”s study groups across Taiwan have slowly evolved from reading books to reading e-books, as a way to save trees. Members use Tzu Chi”s own e-reader to peruse books, make notes, and highlight and bookmark important sections. Many new users are surprised to find that the electronic gadget also comes with a unique feature that makes it possible to multitask while reading. Let”s find out more.

Finally today, Tzu Chi volunteers in the Philippines are also working to minimize the impact on the planet, by giving environmental talks at a local high school. They explained to the teachers and students the importance of recycling plastic bottles, that could be used to make clothes and blankets. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

Aid for Burmese fire victims
Get regular lung screenings
Is god”s fashion out of fashion

Coming up in the show, Tzu Chi”s aid of food, money and daily essentials reaches 400 families in Myanmar that were affected by a huge fire.

Lung cancer is known as the invisible disease, so it is vital for adults over the age of 40 to get regular screenings, to stay out of harm”s way.

And later in the show, we investigate why making clothes for Taiwan”s god statues is a business that is slowly going out of fashion.

A fire broke out last week in Myanmar”s Hlaing Thar Yar Township, about an hour”s ride from downtown Yangon, displacing over 400 families, or over 1,000 people. Local Tzu Chi volunteers carried out a relief distribution five days after the fire, with supplies including food, daily necessities, stationery for children and emergency cash.

Indonesia”s Jakarta also suffered from a fire outbreak last week. The size and ferocity of the blaze left over 400 people homeless, who took temporary refuge in a nearby school. Tzu Chi has been there to help the fire victims through this difficult time.

Still on the topic of fire relief, in Philippines” Manila, a blaze caused by a short circuit left ten families without homes. To help the victims, Tzu Chi volunteers arrived on scene with supplies of rice, plastic mats, and other daily necessities.

Refugees seeking asylum in Malaysia are frequently denied access to public healthcare because they do not have citizenship. That is why Malaysian Tzu Chi volunteers at the Klang sub-chapter started hosting monthly free clinics for refugees.

Life”s harshest punishment is regret.

In the Cambodian capital city of Phnom Penh, Tzu Chi organized its second promotional lecture. More than 70 local volunteers came to serve at the event. News about the inspiring lecture spread as far as Vietnam, as a group of nine volunteers drove all the way from Ho Chi Mihn city to attend.

According to statistics, six percent of children fail to reach their developmental milestones. In Taiwan, the Maria Social Welfare Foundation has put together a team of medical professionals to help rehabilitate youngsters with developmental delays. The Foundation is appealing for public donations to help young children who are falling behind.

In southern Taiwan, a patient who suffered a stroke due to arterial embolism had a successful bypass operation at the Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital. Doctors advise those who have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and are over weight should be screened regularly to protect themselves.

Lung cancer is known as an invisible killer, as 70 percent of patients show no obvious symptoms of the disease. When patients begin to lose their voice or cough up blood, the cancer is typically already at stage 4. Doctors say if the tumor is less than one centimeter when discovered, chances for a full recovery are over 90 percent. Thus adults 40 years old and above should be screened regularly, using low-dose CT scans to better catch the disease early on.

Rainbow House is the name of a therapeutic retreat, that originated in quake-ridden Japan, for youngsters who were emotionally scarred by natural disasters. Recently, the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families donated such a house to the Shanlin Junior High School, in Kaohsiung. Many of the students there were victims of Typhoon Morakot in 2009. We join the groundbreaking ceremony of the house in our next report.

When reviving old traditions, we should not adopt old rituals that are dangerous and cause waste and pollution. We should focus instead on the tight bond shared by people during the old days and bring each other closer during festivals and celebrations.

In Taiwan, local temples often hold celebrations where god statues #with bright and colorful clothing are paraded around the streets. One of the stores that makes these uniforms for temple idols is Jinguan(金官) Embroidery. In our special reports on Taiwan”s sunset industries, we speak to the store”s owner, Chen Benchuan(陳本川) about the fall of the trade.

When Taiwan”s economy took off in the late 1970s, people who made it rich felt indebted to the gods, and went out to buy elaborately embroidered clothes for temple statues. However, with competition from abroad, the market went into decline. Tailor Chen Benchuan is now working with his family to keep their store open.

First up to today, in the center of the Philippines, Negros Oriental province was ravaged by a typhoon in December last year, and then rocked by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake on February 6 this year. Almost 15,000 families have lost their homes, and the rescue effort is being hampered by still broken roads and bridges. Tzu Chi volunteers in Manila prepared 2,500 relief packs and bags of rice, along with 1,900 blankets, on the 11th. A freight company shipped the aid free of charge to Negros Oriental on the 13th. The shipment is expected to arrive on the 18th, and volunteers hope to be in the worst-hit area on Monday at the latest to distribute the supplies.

Staying in the Philippines, Tzu Chi volunteers held free dental clinics in the cities of San Juan and Quezon in Metro Manila recently. Volunteers brought top-of-the-range equipment to treat the resident”s teeth. Finally relieved from the pain of cavities, the patients were able to smile again.

Back in Taiwan, Penghu, celebrates Lantern Festival with the tradition of giving ”rice turtles” as a way to ask the gods for a harmonious New Year. Residents also give rice to those in need. This year, the Tzu Chi Liaison office on the outlying island received 400kg of rice from one benefactor.

Over the New Year holiday, Tzu Chi volunteers visited hospitals and nursing homes around Taiwan, to bring some family cheer to elderly residents and patients. In Kaohsiung, the volunteers were joined by students, who performed glove puppetry; lion dances and Chinese music to cheer up the seniors.

Every year, volunteers from the Tzu Chi Kuala Lumpur-Selangor branch, in Malaysia, hold a get-together for care recipients to celebrate the Chinese New Year. During the festivities, volunteers also encourage their care recipients to never stop looking for ways to improve themselves, and take a different outlook on life.

Living to serve humanity is the life of a genuine human being; working just to make a living is the life of an ordinary sentient being.

No doubt you”ve crushed plastic bottles under your feet, before throwing them into the recycling bin at home. To make life a little easier for environmental volunteers, and cut down on transportation costs, Tzu Chi and a local research institution have come up with a second-generation bottle crusher. We went to Hsinchu, to see how it works.

Kaohsiung City”s Environmental Protection Bureau, and the local Aozidi Park, have been awarded carbon neutral status, from the British Standards Institute. The facilities are the first in Taiwan to achieve the BSI grade. Proud of their achievement, Kaohsiung City officials say they hoped to inspire other local authorities in Taiwan to follow their example.

Virtually anything can be made from paper, and to prove that, Taiwanese designers have made bookshelves, and other household objects, out of cardboard. The green products not only help reduce our carbon footprint, but can also be 100 percent recycled.

Recently, Professor Wang Shirong(王世榮) from the Taipei National University of Arts came to Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital to teach interested medical staff how to play the Chinese zither. Let”s take a look.

When carrying out charity work, we need to be detached from our own social status. When teaching the wealthy about compassion, we show them contentment so they may become the truly wealthy among the rich. When teaching the poor, we instruct them on the many ways that they may give so they may become the wealthy among the poor.

Besides ”Bamboo Basket Street” and ”Shoes Street”, there is also a ”Gold Street” in Taiwan”s Kaohsiung City. Business on Xinle(新樂) Street took off during Japanese occupation. At its height, over 60 jewelry stores were based there. We now take you back, to the golden era of ”Gold Street”.

In our last report, we saw how business has declined on Kaohsiung”s ”Gold Street.” Many artisans were let go, and forced find other ways to make a living. Among them was Hong Qingfa (洪清發). But instead of working with different materials, he stayed true to gold, and in the process, made a name for himself.

We start today”s show in Sumba Island, in Indonesia. Located off East Nusa Tenggara Province, the island is around 11,000 sq km in area, and lies 500 to 1,500 meters above sea level. Most of Sumba”s land dry and rocky, and only 10 percent is arable. Although farmers were able to get by in the past, due to the recent drier weather patterns, crop yields have dropped; and, from 2011, residents have been facing the prospect of a severe food shortage. The local authorities asked Tzu Chi to help; and, in the coming days, volunteers plan to deliver 275 tons of rice, around the island”s 48 villages.

Moving to the Philippines, Tzu Chi volunteers in the capital city of Manila, recently held another rice distribution for low-income families. The 20kg bag, of Taiwanese rice, that each household received, should be enough to last a family at least half a year. Also joining the distribution was the mayor of Manila, who said took part to experience the love of Tzu Chi, first hand.

Yesterday, we covered a report from Filipino volunteers, who were attending the Overseas Volunteers Training Seminar in Taiwan. Today, it is the turn of volunteers from Indonesia, to share their experiences, of promoting Tzu Chi”s missions; and also the challenges they came across, along the way. On the last day of the seminar, the Indonesian volunteers said, they used online study groups, to spread their philosophy, and inspire people from all walks of life, to join the NGO.

Parallel to the Overseas Volunteers Training Seminar, in Hualien, the 17th Tzu Ching Introductory Seminar, also took place on Tuesday. 280 Tzu Ching members joined the event, which was made possible thanks to the 170 volunteers and staff, who worked hard, behind the scenes.

A different kind of enlightenment now, as volunteers brought Lantern Festival to a veteran”s home in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Visiting the seniors with a group of school children, the volunteers held a variety of activities and shows, that allowed the residents, and the children, to interact with each other.

Doctors in the Tzu Chi International Medical Association, or TIMA, in the Taichung area, regularly visit the Xinshe district, to hold free clinics. Although the medical workers are very busy, and do not get many holidays, they still find time to serve the elderly and isolated residents.

On Peace and Security

Tzu Chi helps people attain spiritual wealth by understanding that although life is short, it can be lived well by practicing the dharma.

If we live in simplicity, and exercise conscientiousness and sound judgment, we can enjoy a blessed life of spiritual peace.

Tofu is an essential ingredient in almost any Taiwanese kitchen, and has become quite popular abroad, as a healthy vegetarian protein. Most of the tofu we get in supermarkets is mass-produced by machine, but you can still find, particularly in traditional markets, tofu, that is made by hand. Despite its simple appearance, the process of making tofu is long and arduous. We meet one tofu maker, Wang Fenji(王鈖基), from Shiding(石碇), in New Taipei City, who makes tofu, the way his great-great grandparents did.

From traditional tofu to creative tofu desserts. In our next report, we find out how Asian”s favorite food, is also its most versatile. Humble tofu can be transformed into sweets, that you wouldn”t normally associate with bean curd. Back in Shiding(石碇), we caught up with top handmade tofu, and pastry chef, Chen Rongfeng(陳榮豐), who whips up unconventional tofu desserts, like cake, tiramisu, and ice cream.

Finishing on another sweet note, Tzu Chi volunteers in Toronto, Canada, visited a women”s shelter to treat the women and their children to a sumptuous vegetarian dinner, along with some fun lessons in flower arrangement, Chinese tea ceremonies, and origami. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

How did you spend your Chinese New Year vacation A group of students from National Taiwan University used their winter break rather productively, by staying on the offshore island of Penghu, to organize camps for children from local fishing villages, and, at the same time, also promote conservation, by giving local communities custom-made recycling bins, to kick start a neighborhood recycling program.

Being a dialysis patient for nearly 24 years, did not stop Mr. Hong Yuanxing from Taiwan, staying on the Tzu Chi path. Mr. Hong”s advice is: ”don”t look at yourself as a patient, or else you will be unhappy.” While rehearsing for the Water Repentance sutra, due to his stiff joints, Hong often couldn”t bend his knees to kneel. He thought about quitting, but, gritted his teeth, saying: ”If I can still stand and walk, I mustn”t give up.”

Ten years ago, Tzu Chi volunteer Lin Liyue from Taichung City lost her daughter to leukemia. She was devastated until one day she saw the Jing Si aphorism: ”You do not have the right to own your life, only the right to use it.”

Love and cherish all the Earth”s resources with a heart of gratitude. A simple life is a life which lacks nothing.

As Tzu Chi”s overseas volunteer training seminar went into its 4th day, the delegation from the Philippines took to the stage, to share their experiences with their peers. Last year, the hard-working volunteers seized every opportunity to promote Tzu Chi”s missions, partner with local residents, and recruit new blood into the organization.

Over in Malaysia, the port city of Kelang has a large overseas Chinese population. Tzu Chi volunteers recently held a special Chinese New Year celebration at the local environmental station, for their care recipients.

Staying in Malaysia for our next story, we meet 63-year-old mother of nine, Nagamman Kannan. Four of her children have learning disabilities and live at home. Nagamman”s husband has passed away, so she supports the family alone, and has little time to clean the house. That”s why Tzu Chi volunteers decided to help the widow.

Being there to help in difficult times, is something that benefits both the giver and the receiver. According to a recent survey of the happy people who do charity work in Taiwan, 19 percent volunteer their time, 39 percent donate money, while 44 percent help strangers. That ranks Taiwan 67th, out of 153 countries, on the World Giving Index. We went to meet some of Taiwan”s do-gooders.

On Humility

Merit comes from being able to exercise humility and courteousness.
Humility - which helps soften your edges and become more considerate of others - is the ultimate goal of self-cultivation.

Straw hats and bags are comfortable and attractive accessories, which are making a fashion comeback in Taiwan. Hats woven by hand with a local variety sedge grass, called ”triangle rush”, used to be hugely popular in the 1930s. The center of the cottage industry was Yuanli Township, in Miaoli County - where the local authorities have been reviving the tradition, with the help of some elderly women.

In our second story, on the triangle rush weavers of Yuanli, we meet another cultural ambassadors - 82-year-old Ms. Chen Hongshi. Like the seniors in our previous story, she also started weaving at a very young age, and has lost none of her enthusiasm for the traditional art.

Over the weekend, a one-day seminar was conducted for Tzu Chi volunteers across Taiwan, using video conferencing to bring everyone together. Lecturers at the seminar made an appeal to the participants to not only follow Master Cheng Yen closely on the path to enlightenment, but also to put love into action and make a difference.

Master Sheng Yen actively promoted the idea of the development of the spirit, in order to deal with a changing world and to discover true wisdom through the Dharma. At the memorial service, attendants, including Taiwanese government officials and prominent figures, signed a declaration in support of the Master”s Spiritual Preservation Movement.

It”s lantern festival season in Taiwan, which means it”s a topical time to go to Lugang鹿港, to seek out some traditional lantern makers. The once booming business is now on the decline, as there are only two handmade lantern stores left in Lugang. One belongs to nationally acclaimed lantern-maker, Wu Dunhou. We went to the 70-year-old store, to meet the old master”s sons, who are carrying on the family tradition.

Victim provides distribution site
Beginning end of July last year, Thailand was devastated by the most severe floods in 50 years, that lasted nearly half a year. In the aftermath, Tzu Chi volunteers carried out relief work programs that paid flood survivors to clean up their own neighborhoods, and also other communities, giving the jobless a means to rebuild their lives. The work scheme was also carried out in Bangkok”s Setthakit Village. Recently, Tzu Chi volunteers returned to the community with aid supplies, including towels, blankets, straw mats and rice, helping 48 households in total.

Attending a training seminar
Following Tzu Chi”s path are over 250 Tzu Chi volunteers from 13 countries around the globe, who recently traveled to Taiwan, to attend a training seminar at the Jing Si Abode in Hualien. Through the lectures, participants gained a deeper understanding of Buddhism, as well as Tzu Chi”s own set of etiquette.

Coquitlam Mayor takes part in celebration
We have now entered the Year of the Dragon, but in the next few reports we bring you a recap of the Lunar New Year celebrations that took place at Tzu Chi”s chapters and establishments in Canada and France. In Coquitlam, Canada, the local Tzu Chi Academy held a festive New Year”s celebration in which, among other highlights, the mayor of the city was invited to play the God of Fortune. Volunteers also taught children how to use recycled materials to make new toys. Later, a group of caregivers went to a local nursing home to bring the holiday cheer of Chinese New Year to the elderly residents.

Fun and formal start to the New Year
Staying in Canada, but moving to Vancouver for our next report. During Chinese New Year, the local Tzu Chi chapter held a special celebration, which included a reunion meal, and a Circling of the Buddha ritual. Meanwhile in Toronto, volunteers visited a local hospital to share some holiday spirit with the patients.

German volunteers join blessing ceremony
It was just as festive in France, where Paris Tzu Chi volunteers held a blessing ceremony and performed the Water Repentance Sutra for Chinese New Year. Taiwan”s representative in France also graced the celebration to praise the charity work done by the volunteers.

Book fans from home and abroad

The Taipei International Book Exhibition-- which is one of Asia”s major book fairs-- ends today. During the six days of the fair, many volunteers helped out at Tzu Chi”s booth, promoting the Foundation”s publications, as well as classic titles by Rhythm”s Monthly magazine. A volunteer also brought along her Chinese brush, to write calligraphy in the books for free. Dharma masters from other Buddhist organizations also paid a visit to Tzu Chi”s booth, to pick up some titles.

Enjoying a meatless meal
Tzu Chi has been actively promoting vegetarianism in Taiwan for many years. Volunteers” work in this area was recently recognized by local officials. On Thursday, February 2nd, over 150 staff at Taichung City”s Social Affairs Bureau gathered at Fengyuan Jing Si Hall to enjoy a delicious vegetarian feast, in support of Tzu Chi”s carbon reduction program.

A decade of service recognized
Staying in Taiwan, the Jingsi Hall in Penghu recently held a series of activities to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. Amid the celebrations, volunteers took time to welcome three new members into their ranks. The eldest among the three, Zhu Chunhua(朱春花), has long played a part in Tzu Chi, but said that after being certified as an official volunteer, she will work even harder to fulfill her responsibilities. The other two, Zhou Suyue(周素月) and Yu Xiuzhen(余秀珍), said that Tzu Chi helped them turn their lives around and find peace in the hearts.

We discussed the beauty of gongs in our last report, and now we take you to an ironworks in Taiwan”s Yilan County that has been making the instrument for 77 years. Old master Lin Wu(林午) founded the shop and passed it on, along with his skills, to his three sons. Now the brothers have become gong masters themselves, and also wish to pass on their skills to the next generation.

While some students make the most of their winter break by going out with their friends or catching up on sleep, others think the time would be more productively spent by volunteering at hospitals. A group of college volunteers from all over Taiwan recently volunteered their services at Hualien”s Tzu Chi Hospital, where they said they gained immensely by helping make life easier for the patients.

Minute by minute considerations are never far from the dharma, and each day should be a memorable page in your life history.

On the first day of the Chinese New Year, the Master urged everyone to be ”wholehearted” Tzu Chi volunteers, and use the power of ”one begetting infinity” to lead the public onto the bodhisattva path.

We continue with our series of reports on Taiwan”s fading trades. For those who were born in Taiwan before the 80”s, you probably have memories of a peddler who walked around your neighborhood selling malt sugar. However, with an abundant selection of candies and biscuits on the market nowadays, it”s no surprise we see less and less of the traditional dessert. But, we meet Lin Huosheng(林火生) in Taichung, who has been peddling malt sugar for over 30 years.
