First up in today”s show, we bring you the good news that Typhoon Tembin did not make a second landfall on the island, and instead only brushed the southern tip of Taiwan. Though rain and wind had faded by the morning of August 28, many tourists still cancelled their bookings to the popular Zhiben(知本) hot springs. And in Pingtung County”s Hengchun, farmers who were forced to harvest their crops earlier, are also feeling helpless with their loss. Though Pingtung”s Sandimen (三地門) residents had to evacuate twice to a temporary shelter, all luckily escaped unharmed and returned home on Tuesday afternoon.

Though Typhoon Tembin only skirted pass southern Taiwan, its strong winds still caused devastation in many areas, including Pingtung”s Checheng Junior High School, whose metal rooftops were damaged. As school is about to start in a few days, school authorities are coming together to clean up.

Moving to the Philippines, Tzu Chi volunteers are continuing their efforts to help flood victims. After they distributed 1,130 packs of relief items in Ka-sig-la-han Village of Rizal Province, the volunteers visited the disaster area again on August 26, to hand out another 2,529 packs of aid supplies.

In February this year, New South Wales of Australia experienced heavy rainfall, and Wagga Wagga was one area that was severely damaged. The Tzu Chi Australia Chapter immediately began fundraising and also carried out aid distributions to help disaster victims. Recently, volunteers returned again to follow up on the residents.

It is never too late to cultivate ourselves diligently and to strive to advance forward.

In South Africa, more than one tenth of the population suffers from AIDS. Since 2001, Tzu Chi volunteers have been caring for AIDS patients in Durban, but have recently found that there is an increasingly problem of orphans who are left behind after their parents” death. To help, volunteers have set up food stations in the community, to hand out hot meals to help these children.

Ten years ago, the concept of the food bank was introduced to Taiwan. Following, many organizations have established their own food bank. Today we are learning about the 1919 Food Bank, established by the Chinese Christian Relief Association.

In our continuing series on Tzu Chi”s media volunteers, we travel to Changhua, Taiwan, to meet Tzu Chi volunteer Xu Fengqin. (徐鳳琴) Despite the responsibilities to her family and place of work, Xu Fengqin can always be found front and center at local Tzu Chi activities, where she guides others in recording the events for the sake of spreading Tzu Chi”s message of love to the public.

Hualien bracing Typhoon Tembin

After Taiwan”s Central Weather Bureau announced the return of Typhoon Tembin in the early hours on Monday, Tzu Chi volunteers in Hualien set up disaster coordination centers to stand by in case of emergencies. And the Tzu Chi Foundation”s disaster response coordination headquarters is also standing by to ensure that volunteers island-wide have enough relief items. But first, we go to Hualien”s Ruigang(瑞港) Highway and see how the torrential rain is causing road closures and flooding in many areas around eastern Taiwan.

Preparing for the return of Tembin

Pingtung”s Checheng(車城) Township was severely flooded, on the first landfall of Typhoon Tembin, and before residents could recover from the storm, Tembin has returned once again, threatening both southern and eastern Taiwan.

Hard working soldiers

In its first landfall last week, Typhoon Tembin had caused severe damage, and flooded many areas in Pingtung (屏東) County. To help residents clean up, the Marine Corps has sent out soldiers to various communities. Today, we follow our Da Ai TV reporter to visit these soldiers at the Hengchun(恆春) Vocational School.

(2)Helping needy families overcome hunger

The successful establishment of a food bank in Taiwan”s Taichung has been the result of much love and care. A major factor of its success has been the quiet donations of many, over the past three years. From donations of rice, daily necessities and money, these nameless donors are helping ensure that the needy and hungry in Taichung get the help they need.

Love from Taiwan for Carmona

In the Philippines, torrential rain and typhoons have caused much damage to those living on Luzon Island. The Philippines Tzu Chi Chapter, apart from mobilizing Tzu Chi volunteers to carry out relief work and aid distributions in the Greater Manila region and Rizal Province, a group of volunteers also went to distribute rice to those suffering in Car-mo-na City of Ca-vi-te Province.

Winter distribution

In South Africa, Tzu Chi volunteers held a winter distribution, in which they provided local residents with blankets and rice. In every winter distribution, many local volunteers are eager to participate, in hopes of bringing a similar event back to their own communities.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Li Chengtai

An important part of Da Ai TV are the many media volunteers that are on hand to record Tzu Chi events, aid distributions, free clinics, and much more. One of these media volunteers is 48-year-old Li Chengtai(李承泰) from Taiwan. Now a full time media volunteer at Da Ai TV, when Li first started, the tools of the trade were all but foreign to him. With time, however, Li has become a practiced hand at not only filming events, but at editing his films so that the compassion and love of Tzu Chi can shine for all to see.

Gallery show of art works

Staying in Taiwan, at the Taichung Cultural and Creative Industries Park, physically handicapped students are holding an exhibition. For one artist, Shi Hongda (施宏達), painting did not come easy, but he has overcome the many difficulties to produce beautiful artworks.

Recently, a recycling educational team from Taiwan, joined hands with students from Sichuan (四川) Province in a two-day event, to promote the benefits of recycling. The students also worked with local volunteers to pick up recyclables along the streets, as they hope to inspire more people to join recycling work. Let”s take a look.

A devoted volunteer

In China, Wang Jiankui(汪建奎) who lives in Quanzhou(泉州) of Fujian(福建) Province, was diagnosed with cancer in 2008. At that time, his family was under financial burden as he was receiving chemotherapy treatment and his wife was pregnant. Thankfully, with Tzu Chi”s help, he recovered in 2009, and to express his gratitude, he began taking part in Tzu Chi activities and was eventually certified as a Tzu Cheng member. Though his cancer relapsed last year, Tzu Chi volunteers again reached out a helping hand, as they hope Brother Wang can recover soon, and return to the Tzu Chi path.

We start today”s show in Taiwan; though Typhoon Tembin left last Thursday, August 23rd, it changed its direction and headed back to the island. The government issued a land warning, for the second time, early Monday morning. The first land-fall of the typhoon last week, brought much devastation to southern Taiwan. Tzu Chi volunteer, Wu Jinyuan”s (吳金源) house in Pingtung (屏東), was also ravaged by the flood. However, Wu set aside his clean up work and joined his fellow volunteers, in helping flood victims restore their homes.

In the United States and Canada, food banks are a major food source for low income families. Tzu Chi volunteers have long worked with food banks, to provide food for the needy. Canada Tzu Chi volunteers have even started, providing home grown fruits and vegetables, while volunteers at the New Jersey Chapter, have computerized their food distribution to increase efficiency.

Moving to Taiwan, to help underprivileged families, Taichung (台中) has established a food bank, to provide food to those in need. In fact, for three years now, the Taichung (台中) Government, has already been working with the public, to distribute food on the 4th weekend of each month, to help some 3,000 families.

As it is still winter in the southern part of the planet, South Africa Tzu Chi volunteers traveled to the landlocked country of Lesotho, to distribute rice and cooking oil to the needy. Beginning this year, Lesotho has been suffering poor harvest due to little rain, and local residents don”t have enough food to survive through the cold winter. Thankfully, Tzu Chi”s help arrived just in time.

In November 2011, Zou Wenliang(鄒文良), a Tzu Chi volunteer in Thailand, while on a trip to Taiwan, received the blessing and wisdom envelope from Master Cheng Yen. Upon receiving the red packet, he was informed the rice inside, was actually the harvest previously planted by Tzu Chi Hospitals” medical staff. To encourage the Thai people to make the same contribution, Wenliang(文良) and the superintendent of Wat Pleng Hospital, Cai Wanglun(蔡旺倫), began drafting a plan of a Da Ai farm in Thailand. After some searching, they found a farm around 20,000 square meters in size, whose owner was also a nurse. She later agreed to rent the farmland to Tzu Chi at a low price. At the opening ceremony of the farm, Wanglun(旺倫) lead medical staff in planting the rice seedlings. The harvest will be shared with patients, inmates and Tzu Chi care recipients.

In Taiwan, Tzu Chi volunteer Cai Liulian (蔡柳蓮) born in Pingtung”s (屏東)”s Fangliao (枋寮) Township, moved to Taipei in 1985, a year after she got married. The couple began making a living by selling glutinous rice at a traditional market. Last year after joining the sign language performance of the Water Repentance Sutra, she realized that her way of killing animals to earn money was wrong, so she decided to start selling vegetarian sticky rice instead. She says, she is happy to be able to promote the benefits of vegetarianism.

Staying in Taipei, Taiwan, Tzu Chi volunteers in the Songshan District held a blessing ceremony last Sunday, August 18. Prior to the event, volunteers went door to door to send out invitations and vegetarian cards. Apart from encouraging residents to use flowers and fruits to replace animal offerings and to refrain from burning joss paper, volunteers also seized the opportunity to promote vegetarianism.

A wasted day is worth less than a meaningful second.

In our series of feature reports on ”Love Is Around”, we learn of the story of Wang Jiayu (王嘉雨), who was married to Taiwan from China”s Hainan Island (海南島). Unfortunately, Wang”s husband passed away last year from a heart attack, leaving their children in her care. Thanks to a neighbor who contacted Tzu Chi, Wang found the strength to go on with the care she received from the volunteers. The mother says, she is grateful to Tzu Chi and her employers who supported her through this low point of life.

To help children learn to empathize with those physically challenged, the Tzu Chi kindergarten in Bayan Lepas, Malaysia, held various activities where kindergarteners were blindfolded for the whole day. Let”s take a look.

While handing out scholarship aid for the upcoming school year, Banqiao板橋 Tzu Chi volunteers also took the opportunity to remind care recipients to prepare for the-then approaching typhoon.

The various Amis tribes of Taiwan have long supplemented their diet with the foraging of plant and berries. In tune with the seasons, they have discovered a diet that is viable throughout the year. Recently, their foraging ways have come under closer scrutiny by experts, who have been looking for ways to help lessen the effects of what looks to be an upcoming grain crisis. We now take a look at members of the Sa”owac tribe who, despite moving to the densely populated Taoyuan County from the mountains of Hualien, are still successfully continuing on with their foraging ways.

We go to Singapore at the end of our program, 68-year-old Grandpa Du who lives by himself, was involved in a car accident 10 years ago, and his left leg was amputated. In the past few years, the elderly man also suffered high blood pressure and diabetes. TIMA medical staff not only paid regular visits to keep an eye on his health condition, but also recently gained approval from the senior, to clean his house. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.

In the Philippines, the recent floods caused a massive destruction in Marikina City of the Greater Manila area. After cleaning up the streets and roads, local volunteers hurried to carry out relief work in another severely hit village in Rizal Province. Within 3 days, 371 shifts of volunteers were mobilized to help out. Though there was no work-relief program, the local volunteers are still happy to make a contribution, because when Typhoon Ketsana struck three years ago, these residents received Tzu Chi”s help. Today, it”s their opportunity to help those in greater need.

In Paraguay, Tzu Chi volunteers are helping needy families get through the cold winter, by handing out relief items at their recent aid distribution. This time, the volunteers have arrived in communities 5 km away from the city of Ciudad del Este, as most of the residents here live in corrugated iron houses. The relief items included rice, noodles, flour, cooking oil, red beans, as well as Tzu Chi”s environmental blankets.

Moving to Thailand, the Wat So Kaeo Nursery School in Ang Thong Province, is also a monastery that takes in needy students from Northern Thailand. For the past 10 years, Tzu Chi volunteers have been providing scholarship aid to the students here. To celebrate Thailand”s Mother day”s which falls on August 12th, the volunteers taught the students how to make handiwork that will later be sent home.

True filial piety is cultivating oneself spiritually through actions.

When you are diagnosed with cancer, what do you do? Seven years ago, 43-year-old Chen Xiuzhi (陳秀枝), who lives in Taiwan”s Taichung, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Chen not only put on a fight against her illness but also started to write a journal every day so she could teach her daughter how to face death without fear.

On a lighter note; in Taiwan, a group of university students from Hong Kong, visited the Neihu Tzu Chi Grounds, to learn more about conservation work. During the trip, the students came to realize the amount of human resource that are required to recycle plastic bottles, and were inspired to reduce their use of disposable items.

La-bu-an is an island off the coast of Sa-bah in Eastern Malaysia. The island lives some 90,000 residents, but not one is a Tzu Chi volunteer. However there seems to be a Tzu Chi recycling station here, or what looks like one. Actually, one of the volunteers at the recycling station is a Tzu Chi member, and from watching Da Ai TV, she was inspired to start a recycling station--thus becoming a pioneer in recycling on her island of Labuan. Here”s more.

On Water Repentence Sutra

Performing in the Water Repentance Sutra takes 6 months of practice, after which, the seeds of goodness have already taken root in the hearts of Tzu Chi volunteers.

Master Cheng Yen hopes that everyone will continue on the right path to enlightenment, and cultivate wisdom and blessings.

Coffee has become an essential drink for many Taiwanese, particularly in Taiwan”s bigger metropolitan areas. Although much of Taiwan”s coffee is imported, Taiwan has been producing small crops of high quality coffee since the Japanese colonial era. These coffee plantations continue on and are committed to using organic farming methods to protect the earth, themselves and the health of their customers. With a working model in place, one coffee plantation located in the village of Jianana(加納納) in Hualien County, only lacks a younger generation to continue on the trade. Although some of the village”s children have come back, the exodus to the cities has still drained the village of much of its residents. Therefore the future of Jianana and Taiwan”s organic coffee trade is still up in the air.

Moving to Indonesia, the Tzu Chi School in North Jakarta”s Pan-tai Indah Kapuk, recently held a sports event to celebrate the country”s Independence Day. The purpose of the games and competition is to teach children about team work, and to cultivate the right attitude when facing competition. Let”s take a look.

As we went on air, Typhoon Tembin is moving slowly towards the east coast of Taiwan, bringing strong winds and torrential rain around the island. To make things worse, Typhoon Bo-la-ven is only some 1,600km apart from Typhoon Tembin, and experts fear the double typhoons may bring forth severe flooding and landslides, thus, residents are reminded to keep an eye on the weather news update throughout the next few days. In Taipei, as the effect of the storm is not as yet obvious, Tzu Chi volunteers are seizing their time to visit senior care recipients, to remind them to beware of the coming typhoon. We will leave you with these images. Have a safe journey home. Goodbye.

First up, to help flood victims in Rizal Province of the Philippines, Tzu Chi held work-relief programs to rebuild the local community. Tzu Chi volunteers also went to the severely hit Ka-sig-la-han Village to distribute 1,500 aid packs. To show his gratitude for Tzu Chi”s help, the mayor of Rodriguez Municipality joined the relief work, and one flood victim made flower wreaths for Tzu Chi volunteers.

Staying in the Philippines, Tzu Chi volunteers are continuing their efforts to care for the flood victims. At a local shelter, volunteers bring emergency cash to a family whose house collapsed. In the Philippines, Tzu Chi usually distributes aid supplies, and this is the first time volunteers are handing out emergency cash. Upon receiving the cash, many flood victims were moved to tears.

Myanmar is another country that suffered severe flooding from torrential rainfall, but at the end of July. Today, though nearly 3 weeks have passed, many areas around the Bago Region are still submerged under water. Prior to holding a relief distribution, Tzu Chi volunteers carried out disaster surveys on August 14th, to gain a deeper understanding of the situation, and also handed out distribution coupons on August 18th, to those in need. Not only are many residents still seeking shelter in local temples, but the poor conditions also mean that many of the elderly people and children are now facing the threat of infectious disease.

In order to stay on the right path of doing good, we must be filial to our parents.

Indigenous tribes in Taiwan”s mountain areas are often faced with the fall in population, as the younger generation relocates to cities in search of a better life. However, the residents of Hualien”s Dalanbu Tribe(達蘭埠), came together 8 years ago to plant organic daylilies, a project that has attracted young people to return home to help. Today, the Dalanbu Tribe is proud to say they have even obtained international organic certification for their daylilies. Let”s take a look.

On Respect:

When interviewing, reporters should be disciplined to only report the truth and respect the privacy of others.

By respecting others, we recognize the right of all human beings, instead of focusing on our own benefits.

In our series of feature reports on ”Love Is Around”, today, we learn the story of Zhao Dong (趙鶇), a native of China”s Guizhou(貴州) Province, who married a Taiwanese. Zhao Dong”s husband passed away due to illness, and last October, she was involved in a car accident that left her paralyzed on her left side. To care for Zhong Dong (趙鶇), her parents rushed over from Guizhou (貴州) to Taiwan. For the next six month, Zhao”s parents helped her with rehabilitation. Before their visa expired and had to return home, the parents thanked Tzu Chi who reached out a helping hand in times of need.

Many volunteers initially come to Tzu Chi with more traditional ideas of how to pursue a prosperous and healthy life. This often includes offerings to gods in temples in the form of incense, joss paper, and sacrifices. Tzu Chi volunteer Qiu Yiquan(邱宜權) was one of the many, who viewed his success in life as the result of keeping the gods happy with such actions. However, after attending a Tzu Chi retreat in Taiwan and subscribing to Da Ai TV, he began to see how this belief system only brought more desires and problems. Now Qiu has given up worshipping the gods with external objects, and instead uses his heart and time to help others. Not only has his work and home life not suffered in the slightest, but he has also found life to be more meaningful as well. Let”s hear his story.

In Malaysia, the Tamil Bu-kit Da-rah Primary School located in Selangor”s Sun-gai Bu-loh, has been the recipient of Tzu Chi scholarship and charity aid since 2008. This year, subsidies were once again given to the school under the Tzu Chi School Campus Charity Program, to help students with meals, transportation and tutoring. The result has been a marked improvement in the attendance rate and grades of the students, bringing teachers hope that students will be able to continue on with their schooling in the future, and use education as a way out of poverty. Here”s more.

We go back to Taiwan at the end of our show; before celebrating the Chinese Valentine”s Day today, the Huashan(華山) Social Welfare Foundation in Taichung, shared their love with senior residents living in solitude, by holding a small scale music concert. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

In the Philippines, to continue helping the flood victims in the Rizal Province, Tzu Chi has not only established a work-relief program, but will also be holding a relief distribution soon. On August 20th, 200 volunteers gathered at the Tzu Chi ground, to pack the relief items.

The free clinic in Beijing(北京)”s Fangshan(房山) District has come to an end. In just three days, the TIMA doctors and staff treated over 2,000 patients. On the third day, the high-ways were closed-off due to heavy fog, delaying many volunteers and doctors for about two hours. The crowd in front of the hospital, had to wait even longer, as many helpful hands were missing, but the volunteers still managed to finish everything, in a smooth manner.

True filial piety is not only providing material comfort but also showing respect and obedience to our parents.

In the mountains of Hualien(花蓮) County of Taiwan, lies the village of Dalanbu (達蘭埠). The major export of the tribe, is the day-lily-flower, which they organically farm. Despite being a heavily labor job, thanks to their culture of community-centered action and helping their neighbor, the tribe has successfully transformed itself, into one of the major ex-porters, of organically grown day-lilies.

Continuing on our reports on Hong Kong, early weekend mornings, a group of Tzu Chi volunteers arrives at Ma On Shan”s (馬鞍山) White-head Club, not to enjoy the scenery, but to dig for treasures. The trash at the bar-be-cue area is often unsorted, with recyclables and garbage all mixed together, so volunteers rush to claim these recyclables, before the cleaning crews throw it away.

Next, we meet Hong Kong Tzu Chi volunteer, Zhang Lina(張莉娜). Though she works as a security guard in a shopping mall, and often works late, it doesn”t stop her from doing recycling, early the next morning.

On Cause and Effect

All causes will have their effects; it is easy for one to create bad karma without realizing it.

We need to be vigilant in spreading only good karma; to prevent falling into the pit of disaster.

In today”s feature reports on Taiwan”s sunset trades, we meet Wu Wenling(吳文玲), who is the first in Taiwan, to be awarded, a certified olive oil tast-er license from Italy. Let”s take a look.

In a new series of feature reports on ”Love Is Around”, we learn the story of Chen Zhiqi (陳致圻) and his teacher Lin Kunlong (林坤龍). When Chen was in his second year of junior high school, he was involved in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. After the incident, Chen”s teacher Lin Kunlong (林坤龍), who is also a Tzu Chi volunteer, decided to continue Chen”s education by teaching him at home.

Prior to the beginning of the 7th lunar month, a blessing ceremony was held at the Taoyuan (桃園) Jing Si Hall. The event was joined by over 600 local residents and government officials. We kick off today”s show in the Philippines, as we join Tzu Chi volunteers, who are continuing to help flood victims in Ka-sig-la-han Village of Rizal Province, by providing work relief program, from August 15-19, to help residents clean up their homes. Let”s take a look.

Tzu Chi”s work-relief program in Rizal Province had its last day on August 19. Altogether the program paid some 3,000 flood victims to clean up their communities. As usual, the blue and white clad Tzu Chi volunteers could be seen working along side the participants helping them get their lives back in order. Here”s more.

Several days of heavy rain early this month also flooded the Marikina River, with waters destroying or heavily damaging the many communities located along its banks. Tzu Chi volunteers have being doing their best to help, from visiting the refugee camps to provide medicine and medical advice, to helping households along the banks of the Marikina River rebuild their homes and their lives.

Cooking may be a problem in disaster areas, and to help, the Tzu Chi Foundation is shipping nearly 500 boxes of instant rice from Taiwan to the Philippines for flood victims. 1.

The Angke River in Indonesia, is also known as the Black Heart of Jakarta. As more and more people dumped their waste into the river, the mud on the riverbed became even higher. As a result, the river floods every time when it rains-- profoundly affecting the life of local residents. Since 2002, as part of their commitment to the region, Tzu Chi volunteers helped build Da Ai villages for the local residents to relocate, and have carried out cleanup work to restore the river to its once pristine condition.

Earlier this year, New South Wales in Australia suffered severe flooding from torrential rains, and Tzu Chi volunteers immediately went to the worst hit regions of Yenda and Wagga Wagga, to carry out relief distributions. Recently, they went back to revisit the flood victims, and the mayor of Yenda expressed his gratitude to the volunteers. In the last distribution, many flood victims took home bamboo coin banks, and this time, they donated the money to help those in greater need. The visit was joined by Tzu Chi volunteers from Sydney and Melbourne, where they not only spread the seeds of love, but also reaped the fruits of good deeds.

In Hong Kong, the area of Tin Shui Wai live many housewives from China, who feel cut off from their adopted home, due to language barriers, different culture and other issues. Luckily, in 2008, Tzu Chi volunteers started carrying out home visits to care for these women and encouraged them to participate in recycling every week. This year, the Tzu Chi Tin Shui Wai (天水圍) Liaison Office was finally established, giving residents a place to call home.

Lin Chunmei林春妹, originally from China”s Guangdong廣東, was married to Hong Kong. A stranger to the city, she had no one to talk to about her troubles. She kept her emotions bottled up, until one day Tzu Chi volunteers paid her a visit. It was then that Lin realized that she”s not alone in this city far away from home.

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Wendy Chen. Thank you for joining us.

Coming up in today”s show, we find out why Tzu Chi volunteers in the Philippines are always able to respond immediately to disasters.

We join busy city dwellers in Hong Kong, who regularly make time to sort recyclables at the North Point Road recycling point.

Relief items” management

First up in the Philippines, in early August, torrential rains struck Manila causing massive flooding. Tzu Chi volunteers immediately prepared hot meals for the flood victims and surveyed the disaster area to conduct future aid distributions. Thanks to the systematic management of aid supplies in the Philippines Tzu Chi Grounds, the flood victims received daily necessities and rice without delay. In addition, the heavy machines used to clean up after Typhoon Ketsana in 2009, were all donated to Tzu Chi. This time, the machines continued to help clean up the roads in Marikina City.

Flood distribution in Luzhou City

In China, the 721 floods caused severe destruction in both Beijing and Luzhou(瀘州) of Sichuan(四川) Province. As Luzhou(瀘州) City is siutated between the Yangtze River and Tou (沱) River, the area was one of the worst hit. To help, Tzu Chi volunteers held a relief distribution on August 15th, and handed out daily necessities and blankets. The residents were moved to tears by Tzu Chi”s care and love.

Blankets from Taiwan

Also helping China”s flood victims are Tzu Chi volunteers in Xiamen, who recently put together 1,100 boxes of blankets from Taiwan for future relief distributions. When the blankets arrived in Xiamen(廈門), 40 local volunteers came to help, with some of them even taking a day off from work.

Reminiscent of the old days

North Point Road, in the North Point District of Hong Kong, is one street that still preserves some of the scenes from the past. One of the intersecting streets of North Point Road is Chun Yeung (春秧) Street, where Tzu Chi has setup a recycling point. Here, one sees many foreign domestic workers sorting recyclables with Tzu Chi volunteers during their day offs. They say that through giving, they can contribute their love and help those in greater need.

North Point Road recycle location

Tzu Chi volunteer, Lin Fajin(林發金), is the one who helped establish the North Point Road recycling point in Hong Kong. Originally from Indonesia, she invited many Indonesian volunteers to join her. Her housekeeper Ami(Amy) is her right hand in helping sort recyclables. When she is ill, it is Ami(Amy) who will take her place, to go out and collect recyclables. Although one is an employer and the other a housekeeper, the two are more like partners holding down the recycling point at North Point Road.

DIY(3)Stopping the sun and heat

Many of Taiwan”s older building were built facing west, which means that they get the hot afternoon sun. In summer, this can be intolerable as heat quickly builds up in the apartment, as the sun hits the walls and windows. All this heat means a lot of work for air con units. However, GCHA chairman, Qiu Jizhe(邱繼哲), has come up with some unique ways, to beat the heat, and ensure that your electricity bills stay down.

The making of coal briquettes

Yesterday, we learned about the red brick kilns of Taiwan”s Changhua(彰化), today, we are learning about the related industry of coal briquette in Nantou”s Caotun(草屯). In the old days, most people used coal in their kitchens for cooking or boiling hot water. However, with the convenience of gas, the need for coal briquettes has slowly declined. In our feature reports on the island”s fading industries, we meet Hu Xiuhu (胡秀虎) who is over 70 years of age and is determined to preserve the trade.

At the end of our program today, we stay in Taiwan, but go to Miaoli”s Toufen(苗栗頭份), where the local recycling station offers basic computing classes for senior residents in the community. The weekly lesson not only keeps elderly people and volunteers busy, but also give these old computers, a second lease of life. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.

Flood victims in desparate need

The heavy rainfall at the end of July in Myanmar has caused serious flooding in the Bago Region, which is situated north east of Yangon. As houses and farmlands were submerged under water, Bago”s residents were forced to evacuate to higher grounds, and they are faced with food shortage as travel is limited to rafts.

(2) Seeing Tzu Chi”s good work

Continuing on our feature reports on Hong Kong, today, we look at the government program that was established to deal with its garbage problem. In 2011, the government set up the Kowloon Bay Material Transfer Centre or MTC, to collect recyclables from different communities and educate the public on the importance of recycling. Now, Tzu Chi is working hand-in-hand with the government, in hopes of turning Hong Kong into a greener city.

In our continuing series on DIY eco-friendly homes, we now travel south to Taiwan”s Pingtung, to take a look at the house of one Canadian, John Lamorie, who has built his home almost entirely out of recycled materials and cast offs. Another intriguing feature of the house, is that the walls and foundation are made with a mixture of concrete and used newspaper pulp. Let”s now take a look at how John is building his house, one cast off at a time.

The tale of red bricks in Taiwan

In the 1960s, Taiwan”s construction industry was flourishing, and the main material used to build houses was red bricks. At that time, Changhua”s Qiaotou (橋頭) Village was known as the hometown of red bricks. However, with the passing of time, there are only five red-brick kilns left in the village. Among them, Zhang family”s kiln is a century old. Though the 4th generation owner, Zhang Chengyuan(張澄淵) struggled to make it through the fall of the industry, nevertheless, they worked together as a family and have successfully turned their kiln into a tourist attraction and are even producing custom made products with red bricks.

In early August, the Philippines suffered severe flooding from torrential rains, with Marikina City the worst hit. The Tzu Chi Street in Tu-ma-na Village, as well as, Nang-ka High School was left covered in mud. Some residents were even left without a bed to sleep in. Let”s take a look.

Following torrential rains, the streets in Manila of the Philippines were left muddy and full of garbage. Tzu Chi volunteers held a work relief program to encourage local residents to join the cleanup. They used signboards, sacks and anything they could find as equipment to help speed up the clean up process.

Helping Filipino flood victims

Staying in the Philippines, to date, 1,005 residents have joined the work relief program in Marikina City, to clean up their homes. The Tzu Chi Philippines Chapter also sent out machines and trucks to help transport the collected garbage to the government landfill.

Hong Kong”s low recycling rate

For many people Hong Kong is a heaven for shopping and food. But do you know that people in Hong Kong produces the most garbage in the world. According to statistics, in 2010, the average garbage produced per person was 2.67 kilos, which is twice the amount of Taiwan. Today, we start a new series of feature reports on Hong Kong, and we first take a look at how residents” way of life is creating the large amount of trash.

Electric scooter assistance

Moving to Taiwan, in Nantou(南投), Tzu Chi care recipient, Mr. Jian(簡溪河) is a stroke victim and a single father of five. The Jian family rarely does household chores and to help, Tzu Chi volunteers cleaned up their house for them, and also gave Mr. Jian, an electric scooter to help him get around.

Coming up in today”s show, Philippines Tzu Chi volunteers are conducting disaster surveys in Rizal Province and providing emotional support to flood victims. As Tzu Chi”s recycling stations are needing more space to store recyclables, we take a look at the bottle compressor that is designed to do the task. And, we join the closing ceremony of the 2012 Tzu Chi International Humanitarian Aid Seminar and see the changes in the participants.

Helping the flood victims

Bringing love to flood victims

On August 12 th, Tzu Chi volunteers arrived in Rizal Province, in the Philippines, to conduct a disaster assessment as 80 percent of the area was flooded. In the mu-ni-ci-pality of Tay-tay, about 50,000 households still travel around using rafts. Meanwhile, after Typhoon Ketsana in 2009, the government encouraged many residents to move to the municipality of Rod-ri-guez. However, this time around, this area was also flooded.

Helping the flood victims

Philippines Tzu Chi volunteers recently held a relief distribution at the Old Ba-la-ra Elementary School in Quezon City, helping a total of 1,040 households. The relief supplies included straw mats, pots, and 10 kilograms of rice. Local volunteer, Ma-rie, also a teacher at the school, took part in the distribution, and shared with residents, the importance of recycling.

Work-relief programs to help clean up

Also in the Philippines, building on their experience in the aftermath of Typhoon Ketsana, Tzu Chi volunteers on August 10 started another round of work-relief programs--this time in Barangay Ta-ta-lon, Quezon City. Currently there are already 400 people participating.

90,000 tons of recycled PET bottles

To allow more space in Tzu Chi”s recycling station and reduce the need to transport recyclables, Tzu Chi has been working, with the Industrial Technology Research Institute, to design a bottle compressor. Volunteers and researchers hoped to come up with an easy to use, safe, and environmentally friendly machine. Today, the newly designed bottle compressor, can squash 600 plastic bottles into one stack, reducing storage space by up to 90 percent.

Environmental pioneers

In the United States, the new Jing Si Books and Cafe in San Diego, California, is not only decorated with recycled materials and selling green products, but even the employees have to be environmentally con-scious. Many of the employees might have recycled little or none in the past, but since working there, things have changed.

2012 TIHAA seminar in Hualien

The 2012 Tzu Chi International Humanitarian Aid Seminar successfully concluded last Sunday,August 12 in Hualien, Taiwan. The three-day workshop helped entrepreneurs, professionals and scholars from different coutnries to better understand Tzu Chi”s humanitarian spirit.

A bright future ahead

Following Typhoon Morakot, many indigenous people decided to leave their homeland for the government housing available off the mountain. For some, it was an economic consideration, while for others, it means a better life and education opportunities for their children. Despite the difficulties and loneliness, now many of the families have finally adapted to life off the mountain.

Auspicious Month blessings

On August 4 th, the Tzu Chi Qishan(旗山) Liason office in Kaohsiung (高雄), Taiwan, held an Au-spi-cious Month celebration, and invited the children from Shanlin(杉林) Da Ai Community to participate. The day before the event, the children helped out in writing good deeds cards, in hopes of bringing blessings to others during the celebration.

Visiting scholarship applicants

This year, the Tzu Chi Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chapter in Malaysia, received over 8,200 applications for its New Shoots Scholarship program. Local volunteers were all mobilized to visit the homes of applicants before the new semester starts. Despite the difficulties in distance, Tzu Chi volunteers visited every potential scholarship recipient.

At the end of the show, we stay in Malaysia, but go to the Tzu Chi Malacca Chapter, where Tzu Chi volunteers held the ”Au-spi-cious Month” blessing ceremonies, joined by 632 residents. The volunteers performed sections of the Water Repentance Sutra and hope to inspire the participants to see the ”Ghost Month” with a more positive perspective. That”s all the time we have for. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

Award winning DA.AI Technology

First up in today”s program, we join DA.AI Technology as they are awarded in the 2012 Taiwan Excellence Awards, for its polo shirts made from plastic bottles. The company recently also invited 9 Taiwanese designers, to help launch over 60 newly designed clothes and bags, which will be showcased in this year”s Taipei IN Style Exhibition from October 16th to 18th. And to further promote eco-friendly products to the public, DA.AI Technology opened two more stores in Kaohsiung.

Eco-friendly living

In the United States, the Jing Si Books and Cafe in San Diego, California, is presenting a different side of the bookstore chain. Not only is the decoration of the store different, but it”s emphasis isn”t about selling products, but promoting a green lifestyle.

Typhoon Morakot three years on

Following Typhoon Morakot in 2009, Provincial Highway No. 20 and 21, the main roads to the mountain villages of Namaxia and Taoyuan in south Taiwan, were washed out. Experts estimated that the roads would take 10 years and 3 billion USD to reopen. Now three years on, construction on the roads continues, which means that villagers still have to make use of an unpaved former goat trail, in order to sell their goods, see a doctor or go to school. The road they use is unstable and dangerous, but villagers have no other options, as it is their only way in and out of town. Here”s more.

Serving others is a blessing

In Taiwan, officials from the Toufen(頭份) Police Station and students from Chienkuo (建國) Junior High School, paid a visit to the Shiguang(世光) Home for the Disabled in Hsinchu(新竹). The day taught the students to value their parent”s love and how service is not a sacrifice, but a blessing.

Teaching children about vegetarianism

Good habits need to be nurtured at a young age. Taichung Tzu Chi volunteers held a two-day ”fruits and vegetables” event, and invited elementary and high school students to experience the benefits of vegetarianism.

The making of bamboo leaf hats

In the early days, bamboo leaf hats or also known as ”Douli”(斗笠) in Mandarin, were commonly used among farmers, tea-leaf pickers and workers. It not only keeps one away from the heat and rain, but the thin layer of material on top also allows the head to breathe. In today”s feature reports on Taiwan”s sunset trades, we go to Taoyuan”s Kengzi (坑子) Village to meet Chen Shumei(陳樹梅), who has some 6 decades of experience in making bamboo hats.

Inspiring painter in Taichung

Yan Huiya(顏彗雅) from Taichung City, suffered arthritis since she was four. Despite the physical challenges, she has not succumbed to her illness, but has found meaning in life through painting. Now, Yan Huiya, is going to hold her first exhibition ever to share her story with everyone.

Discovering talent in drawing

Also finding meaning to life through art is Tzu Chi volunteer Chen Yuyu (陳宇昱), who injured his spine after a car accident 9 years ago and was later diagnosed with last stage oral cancer. After attending the community seminars held at the local Jing Si Hall, he discovered his interest in drawing. With the encouragement of Tzu Chi volunteers, he is now launching his first drawing exhibition.
