Thank you for joining us.Coming up in today”s program, disadvantaged children in Ontario, Canada receive Tzu Chi”s stationery for the upcoming new school year. In the continuation of our featured reports on Taiwan”s pristine Dongsha Island, we take a look at the fauna and flora in and around its famous atoll. Later, we talk to family members of Silent Mentor Liu Weixing, who are carrying on his legacy by committing themselves to Tzu Chi”s work.

1. 加開學發放 Helping Ontario kids prepare for school
Since the end of last year, volunteers from Tzu Chi Canada have been working in cooperation with a local vegetarian food bank in Ontario to help deliver food to low-income families. Recently, children from these needy households also received school bags from Tzu Chi for the new academic year.
從去年開始，加拿大慈濟志工和安大略省的素食銀行合作，為低收入戶發送食物，新學期開始了，這些孩子也收到慈濟給予的書包。
2. 南非發放米 Winter distribution in Cape Town
Helping poor families meet their needs-- Tzu Chi volunteers in Cape Town, South Africa, are doing just that with their latest winter aid distributions, giving out blankets, rice and other necessities to disadvantaged local families.
給需要的家庭一點幫助，南非開普敦慈濟志工透過冬令發放伸出援手，與當地貧窮家庭分享毛毯、白米，以及其他生活物資。
3. 桃源上學難 Highway destroyed after flooding
Moving to Taiwan, Provincial Highway No. 21 that runs through Kaohsiung”s Taoyuan 桃源District connects the area to the outside world. Following Typhoon Nanmadol last month, the road was destroyed and has yet to be fixed, leading to a situation where teachers and students are unable to return to school.
轉到台灣，聯外道路台21線是高雄市桃源區到外界的重要道路，上個月南瑪都颱風侵台，路又斷了，至今依然還未修復，造成當地老師與學生還無法復學。

4. 花中秋送愛 Delivering moon cakes in Hualien
Next Monday will mark this year”s Mid-Autumn Festival. In Hualien, Taiwan, Tzu Chi volunteers visited care recipients and delivered homemade moon cakes to share some holiday joy.
下個禮拜一就是今年的中秋節，在台灣花蓮的慈濟志工拜訪感恩戶，並送上月餅，分享過節氣氛。
5. 斯愛灑茶會 Large Tzu Chi tea party in Colombo
The Tzu Chi liaison office in Colombo, Sri Lanka organized a tea ceremony this past Sunday, in which nearly 200 people arrived to learn more about Buddhism in action. Let”s take a look.
斯里蘭卡可倫坡慈濟聯絡處上周日舉辦大型的愛灑茶會，共有近兩百位當地的人士參加，要了解慈濟的善舉，一起來看看。
6. 馬募款音樂會 Symphony of Hearts II in Penang
Next, we go Malaysia, where the ”Symphony of Hearts II” charity concert was held in Penang. The event aimed to raise half a million ringgits to be distributed evenly to six different charity organizations, including the Tzu Chi Foundation.
接著，帶你到馬來西亞，在檳城舉辦一場慈善演唱會「心之交響樂演唱會」，要為6個慈善團體籌募馬幣50萬令吉，其中包括佛教的慈濟基金會。

Recycling work is a form of healthy exercise; and while we give, we are also enlightened in the process. When we open our hearts, we gain happiness. Though volunteers sweat from sorting recyclables, it helps improve their circulation, so they can lead a healthy lifestyle, while creating blessings for mankind.

7. 珊瑚指環東沙(2) Wildlife sanctuary on coral atoll
Taiwan”s Dongsha Island looks like a tiny ring submerged in the South China Sea. The circular atoll is made of coral, built up over millions of years. The lagoon in middle of Dongsha”s main island is a haven for a rich variety of waterweeds. In our continuing series from the coral island, we explore the natural wonders of Dongsha.
東沙是位在南海一顆藍色的珊瑚指環，這個指環其實是一座環礁，歷經千萬年才得以形成，整個環礁地形有潟湖，形成一個豐富的生態系，2007年開始，東沙建造成台灣首座海洋型國家公園，自此，天然資源一直受到保護，今天的珊瑚指環專題中，帶大家一起來探險東沙的自然奇蹟。
8. 舊屋變綠能屋 Green makeover for old buildings
At the Qiaotou Sugar Refinery in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, there are several derelict dormitories left from the Japanese colonial period. The National University of Kaohsiung recently undertook the renovation of some of the condemned houses, turning them into eco-friendly buildings.
高雄橋頭糖廠，有許多日治時代留下的廢棄宿舍，高雄大學把面臨拆除面運的房舍，重新改造，也讓舊屋變成綠能屋。
9. 0908歷史的今天 On this day, the 8th of September
1966 Int”l Literacy Day
In 1965, UNESCO declared this day, September 8, as International Literacy Day, which was first celebrated in 1966. The aim is to raise awareness among the international community of the strong correlation between illiteracy and poverty, and the need to secure basic rights by being able to read.
1991 China flood relief team
In the aftermath of the widespread flooding that swamped eastern China, Tzu Chi volunteers from Taiwan traveled to the troubled country in August of 1991, to carry out rescue and recovery work. On this day in 1991, the China disaster relief team-headed by Master Cheng Yen- was officially created, marking the start of Tzu Chi”s charity mission in China.
1995 Eileen Chang passes away
Celebrated Chinese novelist Eileen Chang is known for her unique writing style. Chang”s bestselling works are considered the greatest Chinese literature of her time. On this day in 1995, Chang passed away in Los Angeles, at the age of 74. In 2007, Chang”s book, ”Lust, Caution” was turned into a movie directed by Ang Lee, which won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival.
2007 Gangshan Edu. Center
The Gangshan Community Education Center, under the auspices of Tzu Chi University Continuing Education Center was inaugurated on this day in 2007. Tree saplings were planted during the opening ceremony. The learning center features a variety of courses, including a class on eight-part harmony singing unique to Taiwan”s indigenous Bunun tribe.
歷史的今天，九月八號。1966年，首屆國際掃盲日，提升受教人權。聯合國教科文組織在1965年制訂「國際掃除文盲日」，1966年的這天首次慶祝，盼喚起國際社會重視文盲與貧窮的關係，保障基本人權。
1991年，成立賑災小組，慈濟長情大愛。為了援助大陸華中華東水患，慈濟志工八月份抵達災區勘查，這天正式成立大陸賑災工作小組，由證嚴法師擔任總召集人，大陸援助工作從此展開。
1995年，華文傳奇作家張愛玲逝世。華文傳奇作家張愛玲獨特的筆風，讓她的著作成為當代具代表性的華文作家，1995年這天病逝洛杉磯，享年74歲，2007年導演李安改編她的小說色戒，獲得威尼斯影展金獅獎。
2007年，岡山社教中心正式啟用。由慈濟大學社會教育推廣中心所成立的岡山社教中心，2007年這天在慈濟志工種樹的行動中正式啟用，社教中心開設多種課程，包括布農族的八部合音。
10. 大體劉惟行 Following in the footsteps of love
Tzu Chi”s Silent Mentor program was launched in 1995. To date, over 400 men and women have donated their bodies to medical science. In the next story we meet Tzu Chi volunteer Liu Weixing(劉惟行), who asked to be signed up as a body donor, before he passed away last March. His wife and three children carried out his final wish and also signed themselves up to be Silent Mentors when their time comes.
慈濟從1995年推動「大體捐贈」以來，已經有四百多人在往生後圓滿捐出遺體，獻身醫學教育，接下來的一篇報導，帶您認識無語良師慈濟志工劉惟行。去年三月劉惟行臨終前，發願要成為大體老師，太太和三名兒女成就大願，還跟隨劉惟行的愛心腳步，都簽下大體捐贈同意書。

Finally today, Dajia Elementary School in Taichung, Taiwan is 114 years old. To accommodate students during the renovation of the school”s older parts, Tzu Chi built eight prefab classrooms that opened for use on Wednesday, with a festive ceremony.
