Growing up among rubbish

District Bantar Gebang, in Bekasi City in Indonesia”s West Java has the country”s largest trash dump. Children in the district grow up scavenging the waste, with little awareness of the health risks involved. Recently, a group of college Tzu Chi volunteers from Jakarta, came to the community to teach health education to the children.

Lets find some gold!

Similarly, in Sabah”s Gaya Island in Malaysia, garbage has always been a part of the residents” lives. However in recent years, with the help of Tzu Chi volunteers, slowly the island is cleaning up its act. Recently a local school also invited volunteers to give a lecture on recycling.

15 days of volunteer work

Students from Taichung”s Chaoyang University of Technology in Taiwan went on a 15-day trip to Myanmar, where they volunteered for the poor, and gave out second-hand clothing and toys to those in need. The eye-opening trip gave the young adults a new perspective on life.

Peanut farmers bring over their harvest

In central Taiwan, farmers living around Dadu Mountains plant crops like peanuts and sweet potatoes, due to the limited rainfall in the area. There used to be many mom-and-pop peanut oil refineries in Shalu, which helped local peanut farmers turn their harvest into peanut oil, which fetches a better price. We now introduce you a factory that has been around for 60 years, and still insists on the making peanut oil the old fashioned way.

A driven peanut oil maker

The peanut oil refinery that we saw in the last piece has been in operation for over 60 years, despite facing various business challenges. Its third generation owners are doing their best to adapt and make changes to their business to keep the traditional flavor of peanut oil alive.

Being a living bodhisattva is very enjoyable, and there is no make a Jacob's ladder to heaven to be full of spiritual joy.

(4)Busy stairs, empty elevators

In today”s episode of our continuing series on Taiwan”s elevators, we explore energy-saving ideas. Though elevators can be designed to generate electricity as well as using it, the best way to save power is still to take the stairs.

Students experience day without fans

Although the Earth Day has passed, Hualien Tzu Chi Elementary School continued to remind children to reduce energy use. The students experienced a day without the whirring fans and learned to value electricity and resources.

A new profession

Tzu Chi volunteer Jian Lixiang( 簡麗香) from Kaohsiung turns scraps of material or old clothes into beautiful bags and purses that are sold at Tzu Chi bazaars. It is her personal salute to green fashion.

First up in the show, the Midwest of the United States was hit by violent tornados last month, which left a trail of destruction. Recently, Tzu Chi volunteers organized a fourth distribution for the victims, this time in Butler, Kentucky. A total of 95 households, or 264 residents, received much-needed aid.

Moving to Malaysia, Tzu Chi”s campaign to encourage the public to eat 80 percent full, and save 20 percent to help the poor made its mark on Wesak, or Buddha Day festivities in Penang, Malaysia. At the official festival, Tzu Chi volunteers helped set up the venue, and then handed out lunches during the celebration. This year, as Wesak coincided with Earth Day, volunteers took the opportunity to practice environmentalism, and promote Tzu Chi”s ”80/20” campaign.

Staying on the topic of Buddha Day, which falls on May 13 in Taiwan, this year Tzu Chi is encouraging participants to eat 108 vegetarian meals before the ceremony, to prepare their bodies and minds. To help people keep count, the invitation card designed by Tzu Chi has a useful checklist. Volunteers have also taken to the Internet, to better spread the message of vegetarianism.

In today”s feature on how elevators impact our lives, we examine a new type of design for lifts. Over the last few days, we”ve already seen one of the oldest elevators in Taiwan, and the fastest elevator in the world, but both are based on pulley mechanics, with bulky machine rooms. This new type of elevator is compact, and has none of the extra baggage.

Taiwan”s Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital received two accreditations concerning food safety - HACCP and ISO 22000 - and is now the only medical institution in eastern Taiwan with the double recognition. Patients and families can dine at the hospital knowing that every bite comes from a safe and reliable source.

One of the ways to better health is to have a well-balanced vegetarian diet. Also in Taiwan, recently the Taichung City government held a vegetarian cooking contest, in which businesses and students put their creativity to test, producing tasty meatless dishes that look good and are low on food miles.

In our featured series on Taiwan”s sunset trades, today we introduce you to the art of kite making. Traditional kites are limited in shape, but for our next story, 60-year-old kite making master, Yang Xueshi (楊學詩), from Nantou is going to show us the unusual designs he has created over the years.

Most kites have one string and can only fly if there is a strong breeze. However, in recent years, a few enthusiasts have created kites that can fly without the wind. These special kites have two strings instead of one. We meet modern kite designer, Chen Zhengting(陳正廷) to find out more.

69-year-old Zeng Kunchi (曾崑池) is a retired engineer, who now spends his time composing songs to promote recycling because he believes music has the power to educate people. The pensioner even took a degree in music, and has already composed 300-400 tunes.

Since 2006, US Tzu Chi Headquarters has been promoting its humanitarian mission by donating Jing Si publications to libraries. By 2009, more than 5,000 Tzu Chi books could be found in more than 186 public libraries and 18 national and university libraries in the US. 1.

First up today, at a training seminar for new Tzu Chi volunteers in the Philippines, among the participants who were awarded their official blue-and-white uniforms, was a 75-year-old woman, called Josie Pua. Despite her age, she collects regular donations from 80 people. As for herself, even though she earns a small amount of money, on the relief-for-work program, she manages to spare 1,000 pesos a month for Tzu Chi.

Hong Ruixiang洪瑞襄was a respected entertainer in Taiwan, who acted in television dramas, sang on stage, and appeared in advertisements. On March 23, she committed suicide, and tragically died at the age of 43. On Tuesday, her family and friends, held a memorial concert for her. In our next report, we look back on Hong Ruixiang”s life.

Yesterday, we showed you how the advent of modern elevators changed the way we live; and we introduced you to one of the first elevators in Taiwan. Today, we look at the world”s fastest elevator, in the Taipei 101 building, which has an impressive top speed of 60 kilometers an hour.

Motivated people get things done because they want to, not because others want them to.

Back in year 2000, the film ”Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” directed by Ang Lee was a resounding success, at the box office, as well as the award ceremonies. The huge array of swords, and other weapons, featured in the martial arts film, were all made by bladesmith Guo Changxi(郭常喜). In our feature on Taiwan”s traditional trades, we meet Master Guo.

Sword forging is not for the faint-hearted. Master bladesmith Guo Changxi(郭常喜) ran through one apprentice after another, until three years ago, when a young man named Dong Jiaren(董佳仁), showed up at his workshop. Despite the physical challenges of the job, young Dong remains Master Guo”s one and only trainee.

On Gratitude

With courage, Tzu Chi volunteers deliver love, from far and wide, directly into the hands of needy families.

Without the needy, we would not have had the opportunity to lend a helping hand. Thus, when we give, we must be grateful.

In Canada, during Earth Day, on Sunday April 22nd, Tzu Chi volunteers held their annual Adopt-A-Street program, in Langley. 30 volunteers picked up litter, along two busy streets. In just one morning, they collected five garbage bags.

The trash problem in Langley is nothing compared to the Indonesia”s capital of Jakarta. The population 12 million people, produce about 6,500 tons of garbage a day. Making a contribution to the solution, Tzu Chi has 16 recycling stations in Indonesia.

Of the 16 Tzu Chi recycling stations in Indonesia, six are in Jakarta. The Kosambi station in the west of the city collects 6-8 tons of recyclables a month. Built on land donated by Mr. Zhang Jianzhong(張建中) the station has helped bring the community closer together. But Mr. Zhang had to win over community leaders, who were afraid it would turn into a garbage dump.

If we pursue our profession with a sense of mission, we will find both joy and meaning in life.

Elevators were widely introduced to the world, after the industrial revolution, in the 19th century. In Taiwan, the elevator, or lift, wasn”t seen until around 80 years ago. In the first of a new series, on the elevator, we take you to Tainan, to see one of the earliest models in Taiwan.

We”ll find out more about how elevators changed the way we live tomorrow. But back to today, and for our next report, we travel to Hualien, to meet organic farmer, Mr. Wu Shuiyun吳水雲. As well as using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides, Mr. Wu also avoids machinery. He says working by hand helps him keep his costs low, and yet, he still comes up with yields, that are 80 percent, or even on a par, with most commercial farms.

We must form good affinities  with others, and plant good seeds : otherwise we will not be able to insire people to walk the bodhisattive path.

We will also lack the power to cange the world. But if we are unwilling to see suffering, we can all vow to make a difference.

In today”s look at Taiwan”s fading trades, we meet master tailor, Mr. Xu Jindi, who still makes suits the same way as his grandfather did. Although his business has suffered, against competition from off-the-rack suits, Mr. Xu says, there is still a market for tailor-made quality.

Tzu Chi volunteers in Tokyo, Japan recently held a photo exhibit commemorating the work and experiences of Tzu Chi volunteers in the months following the 3/11 disaster of last year. The four-day exhibit, filled with pictures from Tzu Chi”s year long mission of charity in the northeast of Japan, moved many of the visitors - some of whom had traveled over 2 hours to attend. The exhibit is scheduled to later be moved to Tzu Chi”s Tokyo office, the Osaka Liaison Office, and areas within the Northeast disaster zone. Let”s now take a look.

On the third day of Tzu Chi photo exhibit in Tokyo, the abbot from a temple in the northeast of Japan flew in especially to see the collection. Meanwhile, local Tzu Chi volunteers went to the nearest metro station to encourage the public to visit the show.

Moving on to the Philippines, a fire sparked by a candle in Barangay Addition Hills, in Mandaluyong City, destroyed 11 houses, leaving as many as 25 families without roofs over their heads. Upon receiving the news, Tzu Chi volunteers immediately rushed to the scene of the blaze to bring relief materials and comfort to the victims.

Excellence is achieved by being mindful.

The world celebrated Earth Day on Sunday, April 22nd. In Taiwan”s Kaohsiung, the Environmental Protection Bureau organized a carnival, and invited Tzu Chi volunteers to come share their knowledge on conservation.

One way to be more environmentally friendly is to save rainwater. Taiwan”s annual rainfall is the third highest in the world. But the country is number 18 on the list of countries with water shortages. To encourage people to use the abundant supply of water that falls from the sky, Taiwanese resident, Mr. Li Xudeng李旭登, runs a workshop to teach people to install their own household rain collection systems.

By making changes to how we live can make an impact on our environment as well. In response to Master Cheng Yen”s call to eat 80 percent full and leave the remaining 20 percent to those in need, Taichung Tzu Chi volunteers used unwanted garbage to make piggy banks and encourage others to donate whatever they have saved from lowering their water and electricity bills. Apart from promoting conservation work, the volunteers also seized the opportunity to share the benefits of a vegetarian diet. Let”s take a look.

Every year Tzu Chi volunteers brave the sub-zero temperatures in Yi County and Laiyuan County of China”s Hebei Province to carry out free clinics and hand out aid to the needy. Tzu Chi”s work inspired several local residents to become volunteers themselves and they recently traveled to Beijing to attend a blessing ceremony and share their experiences of how learning how to give has brought new meaning to their lives.

On Giving

Every Tzu Chi volunteer gives without asking for anything in return. All are grateful for the opportunity to reciprocate to their local communities.

The blue and white uniformed volunteers can be found in over 50 countries around the globe, and have given their love to the needy in over 70 nations.

Tzu Chi”s 56th entrepreneur seminar concluded in Hualien on Sunday, April 22nd. Among the participants were the Lv brothers, Chongyou崇右 and Zeming澤明, from Tainan. With their father”s support, the brothers each donated one million NT to become Tzu Chi honorary board members. The young men said, next time, they will donate the money themselves.

It is thanks to seminars for business leaders such as the one we just saw that companies are also becoming more aware of their social responsbility. In Taiwan”s Kaohsiung, the Much Mall Company is following Master Cheng Yen in eating only 80 percent and leaving the 20 percent to help others. At the company”s spring banquet, employees and business partners were invited to sample vegetarian dishes as well.

Now turning out attention to education, a holiday school in Hualien”s Shoufeng壽豐 Township has been established to provide tutoring to students from three local elementary schools. The children not only come from poor backgrounds, but also lack educational resources. After learning of their plight, Tzu Chi volunteers arrived with new school bags and stationery for the youngsters.

In Indonesia, every month Tzu Chi volunteers hold an event for their care recipients and scholarship students. Other than providing them with financial assistance, the volunteers also pay attention to the quality of their lives.

First up in the show, in Jakarta, Indonesia, many children in poverty have to work on the streets for money. Sixteen years ago, Catholic Sister Alexa founded the Kasih Mandiri Bersinar orphanage for street children. In early April this year, Tzu Chi volunteers brought 750 kilograms of rice, along with family doctors and dermatologists, and held a free clinic at the orphanage. The volunteers said they hoped to give the children, who started life on the street, a stable and healthy environment to grow up in.

The next story takes us to Taiwan, to meet Tzu Chi volunteer Lin Wencheng(林文成) from Miaoli. An architect earning millions of dollars, Lin used to love using brand-name items. After joining Tzu Chi some ten years ago, he realized how fortunate his life has been, and decided that it”s time to change his ways. Now, whenever he can, Lin encourages others to give some thought to Master”s Cheng Yen”s latest campaign that promotes concept of eating only 80 percent full, and leaving the remaining 20 percent to help the needy.

Taiwan is just a tiny dot on the map, but according to local researchers, the waters around the island contain one-tenth of all the species of fish that are found in the world. However, Taiwan”s reputation as a fish paradise has been damaged in recent years, as indigenous varieties have become extinct, and the population of other species has seriously declined due to overfishing.

Staying in Taiwan, by the ocean in Hualien county, residents of the indigenous community of Gangkou港口 are making waves to bring young people back to their village. The members of the Amis tribe restored 6 hectares of paddy fields, which had been abandoned for around 20 years, and turned the area into a farming and education ground, where children from the local school can come to learn about their culture and their ancestor”s way of life.

In response to Earth Day on Sunday, April 22nd, the Common Wealth Magazine Group in Taiwan set up a large-scale environmental movement, calling on government officials, corporations and the public to take part in a 45-day campaign to reduce their carbon footprint . All you have to do is go online to register and take part. The website has very useful tips on how to better protect our planet.

In Taiwan, the oldest bookstore is Ruicheng Bookstore in Taichung. Located by the Taichung Park, the shop opened in 1912 and will soon celebrate its 100th birthday. 7.360

As the oldest bookshop in Taiwan, Ruicheng Bookstore, which we just saw in the last story, is set on more than just passing on knowledge but promoting spiritual cultivation as well. To this end, the shop”s third generation owners have devised a unique study program. We now follow our reporters to central Taiwan, not to the bookstore, but to a farm.

Art therapy as a treatment for autism has become increasing popular, as the creative process involved helps improve self-expression and interpersonal skills. In the next story we meet Guo Jianian, a student from Taiwan”s Da-Yeh University who lives with autism. Before he started painting, Guo was a social recluse: he was bitter, angry and lacked adequate communication skills. After he started studying art, he found a way out of his emotional confusion and learned to accept the friendship of others. At his graduation exhibition, teachers and students all testified Guo”s significant improvement in his interpersonal skills.

First up, we go to Medan, a city with a population of over 2 million in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Medan has a garbage problem that has reached crisis level. To combat the problem in the Tembung area of Medan, Tzu Chi has been raising awareness about recycling, and has recently opened a 3-storey recycling station.

Over to Japan, after the catastrophic March 11th earthquake and tsunami that claimed over 15,000 lives, Tzu Chi volunteers gathered donations from around the world, and delivered over 73 million USD into the hands of disaster victims, in the form of consolation money and relief packages. In remembrance of the volunteers” hard work, Tokyo”s Tzu Chi office put together a 3/11 disaster relief photo exhibition. Here is more.

Overfishing is quickly depleting the oceans, and if we don”t exercise restraint, there might be no fish left by year 2048. As Taiwan ranks fourth globally in terms of fish consumption per person, Academia Sinica”s Biodiversity Research Center is promoting a documentary called ”The End of the Line” to help educate the public on the seriousness of the environmental problem.

Recycling is one of the quickest ways to help protect the future of the earth. In the next story, we meet a mother and son pair from New Taipei City”s Sanxia district, who are both recycling volunteers. The son, Su Yujie (蘇郁傑), is mentally challenged, but his mother, Lin Yueqiu(林月秋), did not give up on him. She started taking him to sort recyclables several years ago, an activity which helped him become more independent.

In Taichung, 72-year-old recycling volunteer, Zeng Wanmei(曾完妹) lost her husband at the age of 30, and had to raise her three children by working as a maid, with the help of financial support from overseas donors. To repay the kindess she received over the years, the grateful senior still works to make a living, not for herself, but for those who are less fortunate.

Taiwan”s Hsinchu City is famous for its rice noodles. In the 1960”s and 70”s, nearly every household made noodles by hand, but the industry slowly faded away due to the complex and toilsome nature of the work. In today”s feature report on Taiwan”s sunset trades, we meet Guo Lianjin(郭連進) and his wife, who are still making the noodles the best way, by hand.

Butterfly-friendly highway in Taiwan

Burning issue of hand-made incense

Coming up in the show today, the Indonesian Special Forces celebrate their 60th anniversary by co-hosting a free clinic with Tzu Chi.

A new definition of ”flyover” as the highway authority in Taiwan makes changes to a major road to protect a rare species of migrating butterflies.

And, in today”s look at the traditional trades of Taiwan, we meet the people who still make incense the old-fashioned way - rolling it by hand.

We start today”s show in Indonesia, where the country”s Special Forces celebrated their 60th anniversary with a free clinic, organized together with Tzu Chi. Over the whole day, TIMA and military doctors saw a total of 900 patients, from poor families.

Another free clinic, this time in the Philippines, where Tzu Chi volunteers helped local resident Salvador Docdoc see again. The 48-year-old injured his eyes at work, but didn”t get immediate treatment, and developed cataracts. When volunteers visited Salvador, they found he was living in poverty.

Yesterday, we introduced you to Taiwan”s migratory ”purple crow” butterfly. As you might know, Highway No. 3 intersects the insect”s migratory path. Large numbers of butterflies used to die every year, trying to cross the road, until the National Highway Bureau, decided to act, in 2007. We now introduce you to the world”s first butterfly-friendly highway.

We”ll have more on the remarkable story of Taiwan”s migratory butterflies tomorrow, but back to today, and our next item, on kindhearted Dr. Chen Wende陳文德, who runs a clinic, in front of Taichung”s Wuri station. Also a Tzu Chi volunteer, Dr. Chen has been inspired by Master Cheng Yen”s recent call, for people to eat 80 percent full.

Evil causes, evildoing, and bad karma can easily occur in our lives, so we need to repent. When your heart is filled with ignorance you need to use the dharma to purify it.

In September 2009, an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale created a 6m tsunami, that struck the Samoan islands, in the South Pacific. Coastal villages were flattened and over 100 people were killed. More than two years later, although many families have moved away, others are still living in damaged houses or tents. Tzu Chi volunteers from the United States traveled to American Samoa to hand out aid to the victims.

Buddha Day is coming up next month. As in past years, Tzu Chi will perform a ceremony at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei. This year, the participants include 26 actors, from Tzu Chi”s performers association. Like other volunteers, they also went to the rehearsals for the big day.

On Saturday, April 14, the Tzu Chi Foundation marked its 46th anniversary. More than 20,000 Tzu Chi volunteers in over 22 regions across the world celebrated the milestone by joining the Medicine Buddha Sutra study via video conferencing with the Jing Si Abode in Hualien, Taiwan. At the break of dawn, Tzu Chi volunteers from in and outside Taiwan gathered in Hualien to take a pilgrimage to the abode. The slow march took place on three consecutive mornings for the anniversary.

We now visit Tzu Chi offices arround the world and look at how they celebrated the charity”s 46th birthday. To celebrate this remakable day, in the Philippines more than 810 volunteers gathered at the Jing Si Hall in Quezon city before 6 am for a pilgrimage, and later pledged to be more responsible towards the earth. Their counterparts in Singapore and Malaysia did the same, and also later linked up with the Jing Si Abode in Hualien, Taiwan, in a collective prayer for the world.

As the Tzu Chi Foundation embarks on its 47th year, all Tzu Chi offices around the world joined the Jing Si Abode in Hualien in reciting the Lotus Sutra. Through reciting, participants attained dharma joy and became ever more determined to walk the bodhisattva path. We now check on the events in China”s Fujian, and Jiangsu provinces.

In recent years different strains of avian influenza have been breaking out in waves, one after another. As soon as one crisis is over, the virus mutates and another epidemic breaks out. Every time there is a scare, tens of thousand of infected chickens are slaughtered, to stop the virus from spreading further. One of the reasons avian flu is so deadly is the way domestic fowl are raised. Taiwanese people eat 340 million poultry birds a year. To meet that huge demand, experts say around 70 percent of chickens are raised in overcrowded factory farms. In cramped and unhealthy battery cages, diseases can break out and spread very quickly. Furthermore, the practice of adding antibiotics to the chicken food, to keep the birds healthy, can lead to super viruses, that are resistant to drugs. In the latest in our series of reports on bird flu in Taiwan, we go to a factory farm to investigate.

Turning our attention to Tzu Chi”s medical mission in Vietnam. Volunteers in Ho Chih Minh City once again cooperated with the local Red Cross to hold a free clinic in Cu Chi, on the outskirts of the city. The Vietnam government has invested in constructing modern facilities in the area that played a vital role during the Vietnam War, but medical staff and medicines are still lacking. Tzu Chi International Medical Association members helped treat, examine and leave medicine for over 500 seniors, women and children.

Now another free clinic, but in Taiwan instead. To give patients a better quality of life, the chief of the urology department at the Tzu Chi Hospital in Hualien, Dr. Guo Hanchong郭漢崇, annually holds two free clinics at the Development Center for Patients with Spinal Injuries in Yangmei, Taoyuan County. As well as looking after their health, the thoughtful service also raises the spirits of the patients.

Taking The Dharma To Heart

When we embrace the dharma, we can easily correct our mind and body. We hope everyone can embrace their inner purity, and wash away ignorance. By doing so, we can alleviate our lives of evil karmic forces.

In Malacca, Malaysia, Tzu Chi volunteers began visiting Payfon High School two and a half months ago to talk to the faculty and students about global warming. Eventually, the school would work with the volunteers to establish a long-term recycling and conservation program on campus. Let”s now go take a look.

In Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Tzu Chi volunteers visited the house of Mr. Xiao, who is a long-term hospital patient, to help clean the place up for his four children, who lived in squalor without their father at home. As well as tidying up the property, the volunteers brought back some warmth and happiness to the home.

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Leeway Tsai. Thank you for joining us. Still reeling from mudslides in March, Camina Commune in the Chilean Province of El Tamarugal receive Tzu Chi”s aid relief with help from local Taiwanese businessmen. In the continuation of our featured series on bird flu in Taiwan, today we look at the availability of vaccines to protect all those working in the poultry industry, as well as for the entire nation in the case of an epidemic. And later, a soap factory in Taiwan that closed down for more than a decade makes a successful comeback-- we find out how the third-generation owner revived the dormant business.

In mid-March, the village of Camina in northern Chile was struck by massive landslides, which displaced 88 people. A group of Taiwanese entrepreneurs, from the nearby city of Iquique, notified Tzu Chi of the disaster, and later accompanied volunteers to visit the disaster site and distribute relief supplies.

The demands of a modern life have become a major source of stress for people, and more often than not, can trigger depression in those who are at their most emotionally fragile. For those experiencing a milder form of depression, our next report suggests taking up a new hobby in the area of art and music.

In our next story, we meet Tzu Chi volunteer, Zhang Xiuwen, who had every reason to succumb to depression but ultimately overcame life”s challenges. Zhang”s husband took his own life eight years ago, and both her children fell victim to drug abuse. The turning point of Zhang”s dark days came when she met Tzu Chi. Today, Zhang is an active volunteer who vows to help those suffering similar fates.

While thrift is a virtue, spending money on a worthy cause generates greater virtue.

In the battle against bird flu, inoculation is still the best preventative measure. When the H1N1 virus broke out in 2009, the international community supplied Taiwan with 370,000 vaccines. The crisis prompted local health authorities to develop Taiwan”s capacity to make its own vaccines. And, in the latest in our series of reports on avian influenza in Taiwan, we go to the country”s new vaccine factory, which is ready to produce 10 million H5N1 shots, if necessary.

Moving to China, Tzu Chi volunteers in Xiamen of Fujian province recently held a scholarship award ceremony, during which they also prepared a presentation for students about the importance of recycling.

In the Philippines, the latest Tzu Chi monthly charity sale was held in Barangay Nangka in Marikina City. The low prices and worthy cause, attracted many who were looking for a good deal, and a chance to help others.

Soap bars are not as popular as they once were, as people prefer using the liquid form. In Taiwan”s Sanxia, a 30 year-old soap bar factory had to shut down due to a decline in business. A young man with new ideas somehow helped breathe new life into the old family business. Here”s more.

Tzu Chi”s support and love were also extended to Myanmar, helping rebuild Mayagone No. 1 High School that was severely damaged by Cyclone Nargis in 2008. As the school entered its second phase of reconstruction, volunteers and students went to the construction site to show their appreciation towards the builders.

Recently, suicide cases have been making frequent headlines in Taiwan”s media, indicating the need to raise awareness about the issue. According to Taiwan”s National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, in the 23 years of its operation, the agency has, on average, received more than 9,000 calls per year. In our next report we meet Lifeline volunteers who play a definitive role in the life or death of desperate callers, and learn what qualities they must have to bring hope to what could be a fatal situation.

After the H5N1 bird flu scare of 2006, Taiwan announced a complete ban on the slaughter of live birds in traditional markets. However, the government later allowed ”exceptions” to the rules. As we find out in today”s feature on avian influenza in Taiwan, this is only one of the loopholes in the law. We went to a wholesale chicken market in Taipei, to investigate.

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Anthony Carlisle. Thank you for joining us. Coming up in the show today, Tzu Chi volunteers help clean up an elderly woman”s home in Fuding, China. We continue our series on bird flu, looking at how the virus quickly mixed and mutated to pose a dangerous threat to humans. And later in our series on Taiwan”s traditional industries, we visit a 50-year-old balloon factory, where the workers are made to feel like members of the family.

97 year old Mrs. Liu lives alone in a small shack right off Highway 314 that runs through Fuding City in China”s Fujian Province. Her house is close to falling apart. And due to her advanced age, Mrs. Liu has been unable to clean up the dirt that has been accumulating over the years. Learning of her condition, Tzu Chi volunteers arrived to give the house a solid makeover, bringing a priceless smile to Mrs. Liu”s face, that a volunteer captured on film.

Turning to southern Africa, Tzu Chi volunteers in Lesotho recently visited several care recipients with food, daily essentials and love. The volunteers also reminded the recipients to keep a positive attitude regarding the future and be on the look out for chances to help others.

Success is achieved by seizing the moment and accepting its challenges.

The challenge of bird flu is keeping health authorities around the world on their toes. The virus is dangerous because it can quickly mix with other strains, and evolve by itself, to form new varieties, that are highly infectious and even deadly. Since 1997, when the H5N1 virus first broke out in Hong Kong, a total of 590 cases have been confirmed, of whom a very high percentage of 349 people died. Let”s find out more.

Staying on the topic of healthcare in Taiwan, treatment of Parkinson”s disease on the island is usually based on findings from abroad. However, Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital set up a research team 10 years ago, to explore the possibility of treating the disease with deep brain stimulation. To date, nearly 150 patients have been treated.

Every 40 seconds, someone in the world takes their own life. But are things ever really so bad, that you have to resort to suicide? In our next story, we introduce you to Liu Zixuan(劉子瑄), who is a Tzu Chi volunteer in Taipei, Taiwan. She has had a hard life, and contemplated ending it all on several occasions. When she was 17, she lost a leg in a road accident. Then at 33, she broke up with her husband, after ten years of marriage, forcing her to bring up her two children alone. Still, Zixuan persevered. And now at 51, she wants the world to know, that life is good.

On Purification of Heart

To purify our environment and reduce trash, we need to start from the purification of the human heart. A heart full of compassion and gratitude will keep things running smoothly. Tzu Chi volunteers must work in unity and harmony to keep the circle of love going.

Balloons, in weird and wonderful shapes, are an indispensable part of childhood. In today”s feature on Taiwan”s traditional industries, we investigate how the balloon business went flat, and how one factory in Taichung has survived, despite the threat of the bubble bursting. The company had the foresight to build a museum, to educate the public about the local balloon industry, and bring in some extra income.

Continuing from the last story, the latex balloon factory, owned by You Shanbo(游善伯), and his daughter, is the sole surviving business of its kind, in Taiwan. One of the secrets to the company”s success, is the business culture. Employees are treated like family, and most of the staff have served the company for more than 20 years. You Shanbo is happy that his daughter returned to the company to make sure that this family business will continue, for as long balloons are needed in Taiwan.

A midwife crisis in Taiwan?

Too many unhappy endings

●Coming up in the show today, a volunteer doctor for the Tzu Chi International Medical Association wins an award from her city, in a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona.

●In our look at the fading trades of Taiwan, we ask, is there a midwife crisis on the island? as the honorable craft of the home delivery nurse gradually disappears.

●And later on, we investigate the relatively high rate of suicides in Taiwan, and look at the impact on the loved ones left behind.

We start today”s show in the United States, where Tzu Chi”s very own Dr. Ruth Tam Lim, who is the TIMA coordinator in Phoenix, Arizona, was recently given the title of ”Woman of the Year”, by the City of Mesa, which is a suburb of Phoenix. Let”s find out more about the story of this remarkable woman.

Staying in the United States, Tzu Chi volunteers in the city of Fresno, celebrated the establishment of the first Tzu Chi medical center in central California. The new location is the 5th Tzu Chi medical center in the United States. For over 11 years, Fresno volunteers have been organizing free mobile clinics, but now, with a permanent location, they hope to provide better services to those in need.

Only by treating others with kindness can one lead a happy and peaceful life.

Only a generation ago in Taiwan, midwives played a vital role in areas that lacked access to proper healthcare. Riding out on their bicycles, they helped expectant mothers give birth, at any time, day or night. In today”s double feature on Taiwan”s sunset trades, we look back at the heyday of midwifery, on the island.

One woman who is a living history of midwifery in Taiwan is 92-year-old Li Quan, who spent over half a century working as a midwife. She says she assisted nearly 17,000 births. After retiring, she became a Tzu Chi volunteer, and still goes wherever and whenever she is needed.

On Taking Dharma to Heart

The Master said we should remember her daily teachings, and keep the dharma close to our hearts.

Tzu Chi is widely accepted everywhere, because every volunteer knows how to conduct themselves properly and follow Tzu Chi”s precepts.

Taiwan has the third highest rate of suicides in Asia. 3-4,000 people die by taking their own lives every year. Suicide is never a solution to life”s problems, as the loved ones left behind are invariably scarred for life.

Staying on the subject of suicide, we meet vegetarian store owner Chen Zhenyi from Taichung. Having been through two failed marriages, the former nightclub worker tried to commit suicide, on two occasions. It was her mother who finally made her realize how precious life is. Let”s find out how.

In March, a series of outbreaks, of the previously unseen H5N2 avian flu virus, erupted in chicken farms in Taiwan. Currently, the authorities are tracking over 100 farms to ensure the virus does not spread. Perhaps you may be wondering, what all the fuss is about, and why every new outbreak of bird flu, has the government, and disease control experts, worried. Starting from today, we will explore these questions, and more, in a new series of reports on ”The many faces of Avian Influenza.”

We”ll try to catch up with avian flu tomorrow. But back to today, and 71-year-old Ms. Zhang Yufeng, from Changhua, Taiwan, who has been a dedicated environmental volunteer for over a decade. Although her children would like her to spend more time at home, she says she”s committed to the cause.

On the 3rd of this month, Dallas, Texas of the United States was battered by a series of tornados. Three days after the disaster, Tzu Chi volunteers mobilized to carry out a distribution in one of the worst hit areas- Lancaster, which lies south to the city. 112 people from 36 families received cash cards as well as environmental blankets. The caregivers also hope to survey other areas to provide necessary support.

Next to South America, Tzu Chi volunteers in Brazil held a necessary distribution in the Capao Redondo district of Sao Paulo, about 40 minutes drive from the liaison office, to hand out prescription eyeglasses to needy residents so they may see clearly again.

Back to Taiwan, over the weekend, Tzu Chings from National Penghu University of Science and Technology visited a local retirement home. The youth volunteers massaged the seniors, chatted with them and even sang karaoke together. From their visit, the Tzu Chings said they were taught a valuable lesson.

Events illustrate principles; principles guide actions.

In hope of improving our environment, members of Tzu Chi in the Kaohsiung area of south Taiwan, recently organized a tree-planting activity at the Qishan旗山 Farmers Leisure Activity Center. As well as ordinary residents, some disadvantaged families were also encouraged to take part in the event. Thanks to everyone”s hard work, a total of 800 trees were planted.

Children living in cities rarely have the chance to get in touch with nature, let alone understand the hard work that goes on behind planting trees or vegetables. In Taichung”s Tzu Chi Parents and Children class, students went on an outdoor excursion to get a first hand experience of farming.

There are many more ways to protect our planet besides planting trees and getting to know Mother Nature. Third grade students from Tzu Chi”s elementary school in Tainan, Taiwan, went to an environmental station recently to get some hands-on experience of recycling. The children and their parents said the trip helped them see that they could do more to protect the planet.

Besides recycling, becoming a vegetarian can help reduce carbon emissions which betters our environment as well. In San Francisco, to encourage the Chinese community in the Bay area join the new trend, the local Chinese television station, KTSF, has launched a new program to introduce people to a healthy diet. Recently, Tzu Chi volunteers were invited to appear on the show.

Also promoting vegetarianism, in Malaysia”s Kota Kinabalu, Tzu Chi volunteers invited local community residents to enjoy various vegetarian delicacies. What makes the dishes special was that they were made by male volunteers. For many, it was their first cooking experience. However, through hard work, and following the recipes to the letter, the meals were a success. In fact, the food was so good that some residents even vowed to take up a meatless diet.

Staying in Kota Kinabalu, a village in the city was recently struck by a large fire which left 30 households, or 150 people homeless. The blaze- the second that the community has faced in the space of a year-was so strong that many had no time to gather their belongings before they had to flee. The day after the blaze, Tzu Chi volunteers arrived to carry out a disaster assessment and also hand out emergency cash, which was a godsend to the fire victims who were left with nothing.

On Putting Dharma to Action
Tzu Chi”s outstanding mobilization and exemplary execution are not due to monetary support but because every volunteer believes the right thing must be done immediately. Life is impermanent, and the dharma should be put to action. Do not wait in vain.

Tzu Chi Foundation”s spokesperson, Mr. He Risheng, recently gave a speech at the Buddhist NGO”s liaison office in Shanghai, China. The event attracted an audience of nearly 200 people. He Risheng shared his experiences of taking part in winter relief distributions in China, and the recent performance of the Water Repentance Sutra in Hualien, Taiwan.

Also inspiring positive changes with the dharma inside the Buddhist scripture from the Tang Dynasty, in Taiwan, Tzu Chi volunteers visited the Taichung Prison to hold a blessing ceremony. The volunteers also performed segments of the Water Repentance Sutra musical, which inspired many inmates to make changes in their lives.

Tzu Chi”s recycling station in New Taipei City”s Linkou District has found a new home. To celebrate, about 200 recycling volunteers who were mostly seniors in their 70s and 80s, went to the station on its grand opening day. We join them at the end of today”s program. Thank you for watching. Goodbye.

< 4-day training seminar >

< Unique handmade chops >

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Leeway Tsai. Thank you for joining us. Coming up in the show today, more than 400 disadvantaged students in Heping county, in China”s Guangdong Province, received scholarship awards from Tzu Chi. In Thailands”s Nakhon Sawan, community volunteers, who are mostly medical personnel, sharpen their caregiving skills in Tzu Chi”s four-day volunteer seminar. And later, in our series of features on Taiwan”s sunset trades, today we look at the business of engraving seals, and meet a craftswoman who still insists on engraving by hand, to give the chops a unique touch.

To kick off the show, Tzu Chi volunteers in China”s Guangdong Province traveled to Heping County, to visit students in Yangming(陽明) and Fuhe(福和) Middle Schools, and hand out scholarship funds. A total of 427 students not only received tuition support, but also learned about the importance of conservation work, and what it means to ”eat 80 percent full, and leave 20 percent to help the poor”.

n Thailand, Tzu Chi recently held its 8th community volunteer training program. This time around, many of the participants came from a nearby hospital in Nakhon Sawan. To accommodate attendants” needs and interests, volunteers emphasized the medical aspects of Tzu Chi”s mission during the 4-day training. Among those attending was the chief of Ratchaburi Department of Public Health, Dr. Chow Boon Liong, who was certified as a Tzu Chi commissioner last year. Dr. Chow was here again this year to do his part in encouraging trainees to do their best in helping further Tzu Chi”s cause in Thailand.

Moving to South Africa, recently, in Durban, a seminar was held for 350 local volunteers from all over KwaZulu Natal Province. Some of the attendants live more than 200km away, and spent hours on the road for the much-awaited gathering. The trip was rather painstaking for many, as there were riots near the venue the night before, forcing volunteers to travel extra miles to avoid harm and get to the seminar. Nevertheless, everyone made an effort to arrive on time. At the end of the workshop, three local volunteers who couldn”t travel to Taiwan at the end of last year to be certified as commissioners were inducted in a solemn ceremony.

The next story takes us to Indonesia, where the real estate company Summarecon launched a Jing Si aphorisms contest. 56 employees were challenged to learn 90 Jing Si aphorisms off by heart, with the grand prize being a trip to Taiwan to meet Master Cheng Yen.

Life may be long or short, but virtuous deeds carried out with genuine sincerity create beautiful melodies of life.

Life may indeed be short, and one of the most painful experiences is losing a loved one. 73-year-old Mr. Ye Jincai from Serendah Town in Selangor, Malaysia, lost his wife recently. However, he hasn”t let his sorrow get the better of him, but has instead thrown himself into collecting recyclables for Tzu Chi, even getting his daughter to join him in the work. The senior”s devotion to the environment has given him a new purpose of life, because what he does may be little, but every bit helps when it comes to saving the planet.

In Taiwan, Zhang Yuanchun (張媛淳), a 4th year nursing student at Hungkuang (弘光) University was born with a cleft lip. Four years ago, after getting a corrective surgery on her lip, she not only gained more self-confidence, but also vowed to help others just like her. Sadly, on March 19th, on her way home from class, Yuanchun got into a car accident and lost her life. During her memorial service, her school presented her parents with a graduation certificate. The family later decided to donate the funeral gift money to the Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation, and promised to become volunteers to fulfilled Yuanchun”s dream.

On the Power of Goodness

Tzu Chi”s work is not propagated by monetary gains but by volunteers” efforts. As long as there is a will, all can be achieved. The simple thought of helping those in need is the source of a powerful force of goodness.

In Taiwan, a chop or seal, engraved with your name, which you use to stamp official documents, is the equivalent to your signature. You must have a chop to open a bank account, change your address, get married, and so on. Official seal chops were once all engraved by hand, but these days everything is done by computer. In today”s double features on Taiwan”s fading industries, we meet a brother and sister pair in Taichung, who are among the few people on the island who can still carve a chop by hand. The sister, who is the master engraver, says she sees all Chinese character in reverse. Let”s find out why.

Traditional chop-makers may be fighting a losing battle against computers, but the brother and sister pair, whom you saw in our last story, are sticking to the good old ways, at their store in Taichung City. Following in their father”s footsteps, the younger sister engraves the seals, while the older brother runs the shop. Let”s find out how they added some creativity to their traditional skills, to keep the family store in business.
