5th TC team in Higahsimatsushima

Tzu Chi”s fifth Japan disaster relief team arrived in Miyagi Prefecture”s Higashi-matsu-shima, where over 1,000 people perished during the March 11th earthquake and tsunami. The team simultaneously carried out consolation-cash distributions at three locations in the city. On the second day of the handout, September 11th, which was the six-month anniversary of the disaster, a moment of silence was held to pray for a better tomorrow.

Bond between Onagawa and Tzu Chi

Also in Miyagi Prefecture, volunteers distributed aid to over 1,000 residents on their first day in the coastal town of Onagawa (Ona-gawa). Some of the residents got up at 3 o”clock in the morning to come to the event, and were waiting in line by 4:30AM. Onagawa has a population of around 10,000 people. In the March 11 disaster, 800 residents lost their lives or went missing, and 70-80 percent of the homes were destroyed. Tzu Chi”s aid was deeply appreciated by the townspeople.

Helped into help

Wherever Tzu Chi”s 5th disaster relief team distributed consolation cash in Miyagi prefecture, there were similar scenes of joy and tears. The compassion of the volunteers deeply touched the residents, many of whom were moved to join the ranks of Tzu Chi.

Members of Tzu Chi”s medical network

Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital was established some 25 years ago, after Master Cheng Yen realized that illness was a major cause of poverty. Today, a network of healthcare resources has been formed around the globe, including the six Tzu Chi hospitals in Taiwan, and the Tzu Chi International Medical Association - or TIMA. In our next report, we celebrate some of the landmarks of Tzu Chi”s medical mission over the last 25 years.

(3)Changes inspired by Silent Mentors

Tzu Chi”s Silent Mentors program, not only inspired people to donate their body to medical science but also changed how Taiwan medical schools practice their simulated surgery and dissection classes, which the Wall Street Journal reported could help elevate medical service.

An example for others

Now, we meet the young Silent Mentor Wang Minghe(王明河) who devoted himself to Tzu Chi while alive and also in death.
