Door-to-door visits in flooded Bangkok

Starting today”s program in Thailand, as the authorities in the country continue to drain floodwater through Bangkok and into the sea, parts of the city are still submerged in a foot of water. Worried about the plight of residents in affected areas, local Tzu Chi volunteers went to the Don Muang and Min Buri districts of the capital to hand out food and skin cream.

3rd and 4th distributions in Calumpit

Staying on flood relief we travel to the Philippines, where Tzu Chi continued its relief program to help victims of this year”s typhoons. Calumpit, in Bulacan province, which is one-and-a-half hours from Manila, was under water for two weeks due to Typhoons Nesat and Nalgae at the end of September. Because of the large number of people in need of aid, Tzu Chi recently held distributions number three and four.

Building community spirit in Laiyi

Also related to flood relief, Laiyi township in south Taiwan was one of the areas hit by Typhoon Morakot in 2009. The second phase of Tzu Chi”s permanent housing, for the indigenous community, will be ready very soon. To build up community spirit, and help local government officials and residents learn from the lessons of the 8/8 disaster, Tzu Chi volunteers have been organizing ”spread the seeds of love” activities at the Laiyi town hall every month.

Tzu Chi scholarships for brothers

Pingtung High School student, Lai Qiancheng(賴乾承) and his brother, Lai Qianye(賴乾曄) come from a single parent family and their father was diagnosed with cancer. The boys were raised by their grandmother. Seeing the pair”s outstanding sports achievements in school, Tzu Chi volunteers decided to help by providing scholarship funding.

Reciprocating Tzu Chi love

Tzu Chi gives students in need wherever they are in the world its New Schoots Scholarships to help them stay in school. After 31 students received Tzu Chi”s scholarship in Indonesia, to show their appreciation to the foundation, the students and their parents all arrived at the local environmental station, to help sort recyclables. After a day”s work, they all realized, safeguarding the planet is not a difficult task, but just needs everyone to take part.

Cleaning Cengkareng Tzu Chi Hospital

Staying in Indonesia, recently 100 staff and volunteers came together to give Cengkareng Tzu Chi Hospital a good clean up. Among the volunteers was a hearing-impaired husband and wife team, who said they enjoyed the opportunity to give.

MOEA issues Green Model Awards

For a cleaner environment, in Taiwan, the Ministry of Economic Affairs is hosting the first International Green Industry Show from October 26th to 29th, at the World Trade Center in Taipei. Twenty companies were recognized for their contribution to green living including Da Ai Technology.

On Following Through

Many people can be inspired to make a resolution; however, that passion can easily fade away. Short-lived kindness will not have a lasting effect. Blessings are only collected by every second of charity, so we must follow through on our commitment to do good deeds.

Helping Gu Shuyu

In China, 21-month-old Gu Shuyu(谷淑雨) and her older sister were cared for by their grandparents, who scavenge for a living, when their parents went to work in Zhejiang(浙江). Sadly in April, Shuyu accidentally knocked over a bottle of boiling hot water, and was extensively burned. The family spent all their savings, and even borrowed money, to save her life. Thankfully local philanthropists, and Tzu Chi, learned of the family”s plight, and are helping Shuyu continue her treatment at the Soochow University Affiliated Children”s Hospital.

Helping Shuyu”s family through tragedy

When tragedies like this happen to a young innocent child, like Gu Shuyu, it is always heart breaking. Shuyu”s grandparents, who were caring for her when the accident happened, felt extremely guilty for failing to protect her. But with Tzu Chi volunteers at their side, the family is trying to put the tragedy behind them, and move on.

Flood victims still in shelters

In Thailand, the water from the recent flooding has yet to recede. For disaster victims living in temporary shelters, life is becoming unbearable. Local Tzu Chi volunteers recently arrived at the shelter at the government administration center in Bangkok, where 2,500 residents are currently housed.

So he decided to repay him in another way. Let”s find out how.

Worst flood in 50 years

First up today, Thailand is currently facing the worst flood in 50 years. Beginning as early as late July, about 75 percent of the country is now under water. Tzu Chi volunteers have come to the aid of deluged communities for the past two months. Recently, they set up a soup kitchen in Lop Buri Province, and also began to help flooded areas of the capital, Bangkok.

Tzu Chi to the rescue

Staying in Thailand, we meet 32 years old Sirilak, who underwent an operation for a curved spine 17 years ago, only to be left paralyzed from the waist down. Unable to walk or exercise, Sirilak has become obese to the point that she could no longer fit into taxis. With her bed sores requiring a visit to the hospital, her mother, who learned of Tzu Chi through a client of hers, called for help. Thanks to the volunteers at the Tzu Chi Thailand Chapter, Sirilak not only made it to the hospital, but is also learning how to become self-sufficient.

Cai Mengyu runs like the wind

Continuing our series on students who received Tzu Chi”s New Shoots Scholarship this year, today we meet (蔡孟妤)Cai Mengyu from Taichung”s Shalu district. The young girl has to help care for her nearly blind father and her deaf-mute grandparents at home, but has still managed to win first place at a recent sports competition.

Contribute according to one”s ability; tiny droplets of love have the collective power to achieve great things.

Science of rice farming

Rice is the most important agricultural produce in Taiwan. But since 2002, when Taiwan joined the WTO and opened its market to rice imports, local production has fallen. The government implemented a set-aside policy, and now 220,000 hectares of farmland are left fallow. The farmers who are still in business turn to the experts for new and improved strains of rice, that can help them compete in the international market.

Recycling on the rise

It has been three years since the earthquake that devastated Sichuan in west China. Three years after the tragedy, homes and school have been rebuilt, and residents are getting on with their lives. Badly damaged Hanwang Town has been divided into nine villages and ten small districts. To keep up their work in the area, Tzu Chi volunteers are encouraging residents to recycle. The call to protect the planet and raise money to help other disaster victims, has produced a big response from the villagers.

Bandung Buddhists battle global warming

Staying on the topic of environmentalism, but moving to Indonesia, in Bandung, Buddhists have come together for a seminar on battling global warming. The local Tzu Chi office was among the many guests invited to share their insights. Many participants were surprised to find out that it doesn”t take a lot to start making an impact.

From one to thousands

Tzu Chi”s work first began in Malaysia in 1992. The following year, a liaison office was opened in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. It marked the beginning of an exponential growth of local charity work, which now involves around 4,000 volunteers and 120,000 donating members.

More locals become trainee volunteers

In the Philippines, ever since Tzu Chi helped Metro Manila recover from Typhoon Ketsana of 2009, local residents have been keen to join the ranks of volunteers. All Tzu Chi volunteer training seminars are held in the local language, to help participants better understand Tzu Chi”s values that focus on making the world a better place.

Detention pools for Shanlin

Helping typhoon survivors stand back up again, Tzu Chi built the Shanlin Da Ai permanent housing community in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with more than 1,000 houses for survivors of Typhoon Morakot in 2009. Recently, work has begun to add six more flood detention pools to the existing one, which together will be able to take around 30,000 tons of storm water. We now go to Shanlin for the groundbreaking ceremony for the detention basins.

From central to Northern Taiwan, we meet another family who has benefitted from Tzu Chi”s scholarships. Facing losses over a bad business deal, the He family has been working hard to pay back their debts, while their children study hard in school with Tzu Chi”s student aid. As the family strives to start anew, Tzu Chi volunteers are there every step of the way.

Imported food crisis looming?

Twenty years ago, Taiwan grew 57 percent of its food. Now that figure has dropped to 32 percent - low by international standards. The set-aside policy, rising fuel prices, climate change, and other factors mean that Taiwan may soon be facing its own food crisis. In the first of a new series, we investigate the issues.

Aid for disastrous season

Kicking off today”s program in Southeast Asia. This typhoon season has been a particularly bad one for the Philippines, which has been through Typhoons Nesat and Typhoon Nalgae. The town of Calumpit on Luzon Island”s Bulacan Province has been flooded since the end of September. After carrying out an assessment, Tzu Chi volunteers soon returned with local volunteers to hand out second-hand clothing, blankets, and rice to 1,970 households who, thanks to the efforts of the volunteers, now have dry clothes to wear and food to eat.

Filipino officials visit Jing Si Abode

Tzu Chi”s years of work in the Philippines has moved many to join its ranks. Besides serving Bulacan Province, which we just saw, volunteers have recently also carried out a series of charity and disaster relief missions in Rizal Province. Recently, the provincial governor, Casimiro Ynares III and a group of local officials made a trip to Tzu Chi”s heartland - the Jing Si Abode - in Hualien, Taiwan. During their tour, every turn was a surprise, as the visitors got a better insight into Tzu Chi”s history and philosophy through the stories told by the nuns.

5th Tzu Chi free clinic

Now we dedicate this segment to the fifth Tzu Chi free clinic in Sri Lanka, which were organized by local Tzu Chi volunteers and their counterparts from from Singapore. Running for three days, from Friday to Sunday, over 2,000 cases were expected to be treated. The clinic comes after a similar event in March this year, which was also held at Bandaragama Hospital. We went to see how the volunteers set up the event, and how they are using it to recruit local residents into Tzu Chi.

Cataract surgery for poor villagers

One of the most common health problems in Sri Lanka is cataracts. The procedure to remove clouding in the lens is routine for most eye surgeons, but in Sri Lanka the 15,000 rupee cost - equivalent to 150 US dollars - for a lens is beyond most people”s means. On the third day of the free clinic, doctors helped 84 cataract patients see again, which was a record for Tzu Chi in Sri Lanka. In the past three years, Tzu Chi has organized five free clinics in the south Asian country, and saved the sight of 310 cataract patients.

Annual gathering of leukemia patients

Tzu Chi”s annual gathering of leukemia patients was held this year in Hualien. The event was a boisterous one, with former patients and doctors reunited once more. Seeing people who escaped the clutches of the cancer, who are now back in fine health, was moving for everyone. Recovered patients also offered words of wisdom for those still struggling with the disease.

Honoring parents of the disabled

For people with disabilities, family and friends can give them the support, love and strength necessary to tackle the challenges that show up along the way. In Taiwan, an award ceremony was recently held to honor ten parents for the optimism, determination and courage that they showed, while caring for their physically challenged children. We also meet one paralyzed man who used the opportunity to tell his mom - who took care of him for 30 years - that he loves her, for the first time in his life.

Fire relief in Raleigh

First up today, we take you to a fire relief effort in North Carolina of the United States. Twelve families were displaced after an electrical fire broke out in Raleigh, in the middle of the night. Working with the Red Cross, the local Tzu Chi office brought relief supplies and emergency cash to nine of the displaced families to tide them over.

Tzu Chi invited to Silverado fair

Staying in the United States, at the start of this year, Silverado in California”s Orange County was hit by torrential rain, which brought a landslide into people”s homes. For three consecutive months, Tzu Chi volunteers helped the residents clean up, making close friends in the process. So for Silverado”s 41st annual parade, the town invited Tzu Chi to take part.

The blissful state of mind that comes from selfless giving is the Pure Land.

New home for troubled family

In Selangor, Malaysia, Tzu Chi care recipient Chen Wencai(陳文財) supports his mentally retarded wife and son on meager income. Three years ago, after being evicted from their rented place, the family moved into a rundown home provided by a kindhearted person. But with the house on the verge of collapse, Tzu Chi volunteers stepped in to move the family to a new property.

Delivering love to Tuban Village

Tuban Village of Taitung”s Daren (達仁) Townshipis an indigenous settlement. As able adults tend to move to the cities to find work, the old and young are left behind. Tzu Chi volunteers recently brought medical equipment for the local health center and delivered supplies to low income families.

Kind officer helps kinder grandma

Next, we have another story of love, this time from Zhonghe in New Taipei City. For the past three years, traffic policeman Wang Junzhi(王俊智) has been helping an 83-year-old scavenging woman cross a busy intersection several times a day. The senior was actually quite well off, and recycles only as a way of helping the poor.

Living with TTP

A nurse at the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital suffers from a rare and life-threatening blood coagulation disorder. Despite her condition, she continues to serve with passion, and hopes to share her story with others suffering the same fate.

Tzu Shaos clean up Jing Si store

The Xinwutai(新舞台) Jing Si Books and Cafe store in Taipei opened in 2002. Approaching its tenth anniversary, the store was recently visited by a team of Tzu Shaos from the Yonghe district of New Taipei City, who came to tidy the place up.

Good for nothing children?

There are children who willingly help, but there are also those who shirk their housekeeping duties. According to statistics, one out of every four Taiwanese children do not do household chores. In our next story, we have some tips on how to teach kids to do the housework.

Recycling for problem Hualien youths

On this day, the 17th of October

1968 Literary giant Kawabata
Japanese writer Yasunari Kawabata”s exceptional talent at vivid descriptions and lyrical prose won him the 1968 Nobel Prize for Literature. He was the first Japanese author to receive the distinction. His most famous works include The Dancing Girl of Izu, Snow Country, and The Old Capital.

1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake
On this day in 1989, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area, in the United States, during the 5PM rush hour. The tremor lasted for 10-15 seconds, causing 63 deaths. Local Tzu Chi volunteers not only solicited donations of clothes and cash to help the families of the deceased, but also worked with the Red Cross for the rescue and recovery work.

1993 Eradicating poverty
In 1992, the United Nations designated October 17th as the International Day for Eradicating Poverty, which was first observed in 1993. The day serves to raise awareness of the issue of how the widening wealth gap affects development worldwide. One of the UN”s Millennium Goals is to halve the number of people living in extreme poverty by 2015.

2010 Spreading love in Holland
On this day in 2010, Tzu Chi volunteers in Holland held a ”Spread the Seeds of Love” gathering in Rotterdam. The program included personal testimonies about voluntary service, Jing Si aphorism readings, and a sign language song lesson, to share with the attendants Tzu Chi”s spirit of humanity.

Empowering the poor

The Kingdom of Lesotho is a country entirely landlocked by South Africa. With very little arable soil, Lesotho relies heavily on food imports; and when a dry spell hits, the poorer parts of the country run the risk of famine. Concerned about food shortages, Taiwanese businessmen in Lesotho decided to come together as volunteers and help. On October 16, 1995, the Tzu Chi-Lesotho liaison office came into being. The need to promote compassion and love was particularly pertinent after the 1991 and 1998 Lesotho uprisings.

1962 Cuban missile crisis
US president John F. Kennedy ordered an air reconnaissance over Cuba on this day in 1962, which confirmed the construction of nuclear missile bases. The discovery almost led to a nuclear conflict between the US and the Soviet Union. Fortunately, the confrontation was resolved with an agreement on Soviet disarmament and the cancellation of the US military blockade of Cuba.

1995 Land for Dalin TC Hospital
On this day in 1995, the Tzu Chi Foundation”s vice president Lin Biyu(林碧玉) and a representative of the Taiwan Sugar Corporation, Wang Dongshi(王東士) signed a land lease for Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, in Beigang(北港), in Chiayi, Taiwan. The agreement gave the go-ahead for the construction of the hospital, which had been suspended for five years.

2000 Free clinic for farm workers
In northern California, in the United States, migrant farm workers of Filipino descent or from Mexico, earn very little for a living. Their plight caught Tzu Chi”s attention, and after several assessments volunteers held a free clinic in Kern County, for more than 1,000 farm laborers. A year later, on this day in 2000, another charity clinic was held, with free haircuts and essential supplies for the patients, as well as stationery for children.

Spreading the seeds of love

Thursday, October 13, marked the 10th anniversary of Tzu Chi”s peace promotion campaign: ”Spread the Seeds of Love”. October 13, or 1013 in numbers, sounds like ”one person, one act of kindness” in Chinese. In 2001, a spate of natural and man-made disasters, including the September 11th attacks, moved Master Cheng Yen to launch the campaign to promote love in great and small ways. The program is still going strong today.
