Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Dennis Wu. Thank you for joining us. Ready to assist, volunteers descend on Hengchun, in southern Taiwan, which was severely flooded during Typhoon Nanmadol earlier in the week. As the new semester begins at the Tzu Chi University in Hualien, Taiwan, its medical school readies the second simulated surgery class of the year. And, three college students in Taiwan help put an end to finding a parking space inside a busy parking lot.

1.恆春善後動員 Support for Hengchun flood victims
Typhoon Nanmadol may have gone, but residents in Taiwan”s Hengchun peninsular are still struggling to recover from the flooding that swamped their homes. That”s why 120 volunteers from all over Pingtung county visited as many as 400 homes in the area, to check up on the flood victims, and deliver some financial aid, and a letter of support from Master Cheng Yen.
南瑪都颱風過境，台灣恆春居民的家淹水嚴重，都還在努力清掃，全屏東的慈濟志工共有120人一起出動，前往400多戶受災戶訪視，勘查受災情形，也給予經濟援助，及來自證嚴上人祝福信的心靈援助。
2.林邊房子長高 Adapting to survive?
To cut costs, Taiwan”s fishery and farming industry has long been pumping ground water, which has led to a serious problem of land subsidence. The problem is amplified by torrential rainfall, which always leads to flooding, such as in the case of the recent Typhoon Nanmadol. But to counter the constant threat of flooding in Pingtung county”s Linbian and Jiadong townships, rather than stopping their overuse of groundwater, locals decided to elevate their homes instead.
為了減低成本，台灣的養殖業與農業長期以來依賴地下水，卻也造成嚴重的地層下陷，而當下大雨時，這些低漥地區幾乎是一定會淹水，就如最近南瑪都颱風來時一樣，但在林邊、佳冬地區，為了對抗淹水，與其停止抽取地下水，居民卻選擇把房子墊高。
3.賴索托發放 Winter aid for S. Africa, Lesotho
Tzu Chi volunteers in Lesotho have been very busy this winter, with aid distributions coming one after the other across the country, as well as in Ladybrand, just over the border in South Africa. In total, 14 and 8 distributions were organized in Lesotho and Ladybrand respectively, serving nearly 20,000 cases.
2011年這個寒冬，賴索托慈濟人非常忙碌，在賴索托，還有賴索托和南非邊境的雷迪布蘭，進行多場冬令發放，累計發放賴索托14場、雷迪布蘭8場，幫助近兩萬人次。
4.美開學前發放 Helping children get ready for school
In the United States, to help children from poor families get ready for the new school year, Tzu Chi volunteers from Las Vegas and Los Angeles each joined their respective annual back to school distributions. At the same time, the students and their families were encouraged to continue the relay of love.
在美國，為了幫助家境困難的孩子求學，美國拉斯維加斯和洛杉磯志工參與一年一度的大型發放，同時也鼓勵學生和家長持續這項愛的善舉。

5.大體啟用 2nd simulated surgeries of 2011
As summer vacation ends, and a new semester begins, Hualien”s Tzu Chi University is getting ready for this year”s second simulated surgery class. The five-day course of simulated operations, on eight Silent Mentors, officially opened yesterday morning, with a formal commencement ceremony.
暑假結束，新學期開始，花蓮的慈濟大學準備今年第二梯次大體老師的模擬手術，五天的課程由八位大體老師指導，在昨天上午舉行啟用儀式。
6.美捐髓 TC in partnership with A3M
In August, the Tzu Chi-USA chapter held three bone marrow donation drives, in which donors were present to share their personal stories of giving the gift of life. After the talks, many in the audience expressed their support by adding their names to the registry. With Tzu Chi”s active promotion of bone marrow donation in the Asian community, the registry in the US is seeing more and more Asian donors sign up.
美國洛杉磯慈濟總會八月份一連舉行了三場骨隨捐贈宣導活動，邀請了曾經配對成功的捐贈者，分享捐髓救人的經驗，讓許多現場的來賓和志工們立刻填下捐贈同意書，而在全美慈濟人的努力之下，華裔在美國的骨髓資料已經愈來愈多。

7.馬國范運強 Going green is not hard
Is going vegetarian that hard? One volunteer from Malaysia shows us that it is not. Fan Yunqiang(范運強) attended the Lunar July blessing ceremony, held by the Tzu Chi Liaison Office in Kota Tinggi, last year, and on the spot decided to go vegetarian. Here is his inspirational story.

1945 The surrender of Japan
After announcing its surrender to the Allied forces on August 15, 1945, Japan officially signed the ”Japanese Instrument of Surrender” on this day of the same year, marking the end of World War Two. Japanese government officials boarded the US battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay, where the agreement was signed.
1969 The death of Ho Chi Minh
Ho Chi Minh who led the August Revolution and established the communist-governed Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945, passed away on this day in 1969 from a heart-attack. The capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, would later be renamed the Ho Chi Minh City to honor him.
2002 Aid for Lesotho
Due to climate change and a lack of food provisions, international organizations began a food program to help Lesotho in 2002. Local Tzu Chi volunteers also joined the program, by taking 1,000 poor families under their wing. Volunteers from South Africa, Taiwan, and the United State held the first aid distribution for the needy, on this day of the same year.
2009 Classes for needy students
After Typhoon Morakot devastated southern Taiwan on August 8, 2009, students in Kaohsiung”s disaster areas were placed in temporary shelters and were unable to continue their studies. The Tzu Chi Teachers Association and Da Ai mothers came together to design arts and craft classes for the needy students which began on this day in 2009.
2009 Tzu Chi in Sri Lanka
The Tzu Chi Office situated in Hambantota, a small town on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, held the first aid distribution to local residents, on this day in 2009, handing out daily necessities to those in need. Among the recipients, a kidney patient, and a 13-year-old girl suffering epilepsy, donated their coin banks to Tzu Chi, forming a ceaseless cycle of love.
歷史的今天，九月二號。1945年，日本簽署投降書，結束二次大戰。在1945年8月15日向同盟國宣布投降後，日本在同一年的這一天正式簽下投降書，結束第二次世界大戰，日本政府人員登上停靠在東京灣的美國密蘇里艦，參與投降簽署儀式。
1969年，越南國父胡志明病逝。領導八月革命，並成立越南民主共和國，胡志明在1969年的這一天因心臟病過世，為紀念胡志明，南越的首都西貢之後更改為胡志明市。
2002年，國際援助賴索托，首場慈濟發放。由於氣候反常、糧食欠收，國際組織在2002年為賴索托展開糧食援助計劃，當地慈濟志工也加入，認養一千戶貧民，在同一年的這天，由來自南非、台灣和美國的志工，展開第一場發放活動。

9.無車日十年 Car Free Day founder Eric Britton
In 1994, Eric Britton launched a movement to make September 22 ”Earth Car Free Day”. The American, who lives in France, came up with the idea to encourage people to leave their cars at home, and walk, ride a bicycle or take public transportation instead. Ten years ago, Taipei joined the campaign, and this year, Eric Britton is in Taiwan to tell everyone to lead a slower life.
1994年，Eric Britton發起一項活動，將9月22日這一天 訂為「世界無車日」，旅居法國的美籍人士，希望大家不要開車出門，而是改成走路、騎單車，或是搭乘大眾交通工具出門，台北市在十年前就加入了這個活動，今年Eric Britton特地來到台灣，希望大家一起響應慢活的喜樂。
10.聰明停車卡 Smart parking card
Have you ever pulled your hair out trying to find a parking space in a busy parking lot? Three students at a college in Taipei, Taiwan, had just that experience, and decided to do something about it. After half a year or more of research, they came up with the ”smart parking card”. Just follow the instructions automatically printed on the ticket, and it will quickly take you to the nearest empty space.
您是否常常為了尋找車位，在停車場傷透了腦筋呢？，台北市大同大學三名大四學生體驗到這個困擾，而有了解決的辦法，花了大半年的時間研發出「好聰明停車卡」，只要按照停車卡上的指示，駕駛朋友就能快速找到車位。
