While spring cleaning for the Lunar New Year, you may have come across many things that have lain unused for a while. In Taiwan”s Changhua, Tzu Chi volunteers collected unwanted items from the community, and put them up for sale at a second-hand flea market. The proceeds from the sale went to Tzu Chi”s international relief missions.

Further south in Tainan, the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle have also been diligently put into practice. At Renhe人和 Environmental Station, employees from over 20 insurance and real estate companies came together to sort recyclables and learn about conservation work.

Recently, a tea gathering was held at the Kaohsiung Jing Si Hall for media volunteers and their family members to thank them for their years of support. A series of lively performances were prepared for the enjoyment of the guests.

The next story takes us to Penang, Malaysia, where the Jing Si Books and Cafe opened for business on the 25th after a short break for the Lunar New Year holiday. For the opening, students from the local Tzu Chi Kindergarten put on a show of songs and a sign language performance. A tea ceremony was also held for participants to express their gratitude and love for their parents. And, visitors all went home with unique, hand-written spring couplets as a souvenir.

During the Chinese New Year celebrations, it is customary for adults to give children gift money in red envelopes. In Taiwan”s Taichung, instead of spending her red envelope money on buying toys, six-year-old Zeng Peiyun曾珮筠 decided to donate some to Tzu Chi.

On A Charitable Heart

The only way to calm people”s hearts is to increase their wisdom and develope their charitable nature.
Treat people and manage affairs in a harmonious and loving way. Don”t spark conflicts or create situations that you will regret later.

Now a volunteer at Tzu Chi”s liaison office at Malaysia”s Kota Tinggi, Ye Dexiong 葉德雄used to love to fish. Although he tried to give up after joining Tzu Chi, it wasn”t until a certain accident that Ye Dexiong threw away his rod for good. Nowadays, Ye uses his free time in service of Tzu Chi. He also joined the Water Resentence Sutra performance, which helped him repent for his violent ways in the past, and change for the better.

Over the weekend, Tzu Chi global volunteer coordinator Huang Sixian黃思賢, came to the Tzu Chi Humanitarian Center in Guandu, in Taipei, Taiwan, to give a lecture on ”One seed to infinity.” He hoped that people could practice Buddhism properly by putting the sutras into action, instead of relying on superstitious ceremonies.

There was a time when the staple entertainment in the theaters and outside temples in Taiwan was traditional opera. But as movies took over, and then TV came along, fewer and fewer poeple went to the opera. However, in the last ten years, Taiwanese opera has seen a revival at home, and has even moved onto the international stage. Let”s find out more.

Things are certainly looking up for Taiwanese opera. Next, we find out how the director of the Minghuayuan theater company adds special effects and ideas from popular culture into the traditional plays, to keep them up-to-date. Although it is still not easy to recruit new performers, some young people are showing interest to learn the trade.

And later, a drum maker in Taiwan who carries on the 60-year-old family business, breaks out of the mold by creating drums in a multitude of shapes and sizes.

As the Year of the Dragon rolls into action, Tzu Chi offices across the world have been inviting local residents to celebrate the new year with fairs and other festive activities. At the Tzu Chi Headquarters in the United States, there were dragon and lion dances, and a fair where one could find traditional Taiwanese street food. We join the festivities in San Dimas.

The African nation of Lesotho also got into the Chinese New Year spirit, when local Tzu Chi volunteers organized a festive prayer and blessing ceremony, for over 400 people. Although life is very difficult for the villagers, they thanked the volunteers by giving them hand crafted gifts, and a donation to Tzu Chi of around 150 US dollars. The sum may not seem like a lot, but coming from mostly impoverished families, it is a gesture of generosity like no other.

Back in Taiwan, on the fourth day of the Chinese New Year, the Jing Si Books and Cafe store here at the Tzu Chi Humanitarian Center organized a gathering, with nearly 100 members of the police and armed forces, together with leaders from the corporate and government sectors. The diverse group sent their New Year wishes to Master Cheng Yen via a video conference link with Hualien.

Yang Baowu (楊寶物), who takes on cleaning and recycling duties all year round at Kaohsiung”s Jing Si Hall, kept up with her service throughout the Lunar New Year period. The 76-year-old says, she is happy to be of help, and is ready to undergo official volunteer training this year.

Diligence prevents degeneration; frugality leads to a blessed life.

In China, Tzu Chi”s Jing Si Books and Cafe in Suzhou has been offering classes on personal growth and community service since 2008. Students numbered nearly 1,000, and some have even been inspired to train as Tzu Chi volunteers.

Another person who recently joined Tzu Chi volunteers” ranks is Huang Jiapeng(黃加朋) from Penang, Malaysia. He developed kidney disease and began undergoing dialysis at the age of 46, and when he had exhausted his savings to pay for his medical bills, it was Tzu Chi who approached him with an offer to subsidize his dialysis expenses. Now, Huang is a Tzu Chi volunteer in training, and encourages other patients like him to never give up on life.

Staying in Penang, Tzu Chi care recipient Chen Ronghua was the victim of a robbery, several years back. The attack left Chen with a serious head injury, which lead to a slight case of mental retardation and some loss of motor control. Unable to find work, Chen however continued to do his utmost to care for his elderly mother. Seeing how hard life was for the mother and son pair, neighbors eventually notified Tzu Chi, who took the family under its wing. With the support of volunteers, Chen Ronghua continues to take care of his mother, and has also started collecting recyclables for Tzu Chi.

In our next story we meet Tzu Chi volunteer Yang Yuee from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, who went through a remarkable transformation after joining Tzu Chi. She used to be caught up in gambling, and was also a heavy smoker and drinker. But now you are more likely to find her at the environmental station sorting recyclables than anywhere else.

Education is a construction project of hope, and teachers must be committed to their roles as architects of hope.
In a teacher”s mission as both a farmer of the land and an architect of hope, he or she should confidently nourish the world with the dew of love.

In today”s featured report on traditional careers around Taiwan, we meet drum-making master Wang Xikun(王錫坤) who owns a drum shop in Xinzhuang of New Taipei City. The business has been running for over 60 years, and was passed on to Wang by his father. Wang went from not knowing how to sharpen a knife, to mastering the skills to make exquisite drums. Let”s see how he did it.

You might have heard a story of an ancient Chinese emperor who used the sound of drum beats to defeat his enemies. Today, in Taiwan, the instrument is an important part of temple celebrations. Apart from creating traditional drums, drum-maker Wang Xikun(王錫坤), whom we met in the last story, has been putting his creativity to the test by coming up with drums in all kinds of shapes and sizes.

As a part of ongoing flood relief in Thailand, Tzu Chi volunteers from Bangkok brought supplies for 1,800 affected families in the community of Setthakit. In Jordan, Tzu Chi traveled through deserts to bring winter supplies to 440 families throughout five different locations. We go to Taiwan”s Daxi to learn more about one of the oldest toys in the world- spinning tops that are still being made out of wood.

A half a year after the floods that ravaged Thailand, people”s lives are slowly returning to normal. However, the recovery has been harder for the underprivileged; and so Tzu Chi volunteers from Bangkok traveled to the community of Setthakit, where they delivered straw mates, blankets and rice to 1,800 families.

Staying on helping the underprevilileged, in Jordan, since 2005, Tzu Chi volunteers have been handing out supplies regularly to the needy. For this year”s winter relief distribution, volunteers handed out supplies to villagers in five different locations, helping a total of 440 families.

We now take you to Tzu Chi”s year-end blessing ceremonies in Modesto and Cupertino of California. Though only some 50 people attended the event in Modesto, some of them were real VIPs. And at the event in Cupertino, 108 performers came together to present the Water Repentance musical.

If everyone can be frugal and cherish blessings, poverty will not exist.

Li Liqin李麗琴 from Fuding City located in China”s Fujian Province now cherishes her blessings after she joined Tzu Chi. Liqin”s brother was injured in a typhoon which left him completely paralyzed. With nowhere to turn, it was Tzu Chi that finally helped Liqin and her brother Li Yongtuan李永團. In gratitude, Liqin decided to reciprocate by volunteering, which opened her up to a whole new world.

Here in Taiwan, the weather has been cold over the Chinese New Year holiday. But that didn”t stop elderly volunteer Lin Shouhe林首和 from going to her local environmental station in Kaohsiung as usual. The 85-year-old says she is better off volunteering than snoozing at home.

It is customary to get a haircut for the New Year, and thus Tzu Chi”s New Year events usually include a barber service. Today we introduce you to a hair salon owner in Taichung”s Fengyuan District, who has been giving free haircuts for Tzu Chi for over 20 years.

Some other people who were volunteering extra hard over the Chinese New Year break were the Taiwan Railway volunteers. The trains in Taiwan carry twice as many passengers than usual during the busy holiday period, so the station staff need extra hands to help. We went to Taichung Train Station to meet some of the 20 or more dedicated volunteers.

60-year-old Li Mingfeng黎鳴鳳 from Indonesia is a ballroom dancer. But as well as teaching students at home, she used to enjoy dancing in nightclubs, where she quickly picked up the habit of heavy drinking. It all changed after she started watching the Da Ai TV channel. Now she dances to a different tune.

Spinning tops are one of the oldest toys in the world. In 1968, a man from Taoyuan”s Daxi Town, in Taiwan, enlarged the toy - which could be held with one hand- into a bigger one that weighed 3kg. It took him three days to finally spin his new creation. Since then, interested craftsmen experimented with bigger and heavier tops, with the heftiest coming in at 74 kilograms. A spintop club was also created in Daxi, which toured around Taiwan to give performances. In the next story, we find out the new challenges faced by the once popular sport.

In the last story, we learned that top-spinning is slowly losing its public appeal. However, also in Daxi Town, one school is working hard to preserve the traditional game, by teaching students how to become tip-top top-spinners. But what the students spin are more than just conventional models. Here is more.

< Lunar New Year for new immigrants >
< Bang on time - exploding puffed rice >

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Anthony Carlisle. Thank you for joining us. Coming up in the show today, we have some ideas for Chinese New Year excursions in Taiwan. Try getting away from it all in Taiwan”s first nature park. How do new immigrant women celebrate Chinese New Year in Taiwan We meet a Vietnamese bride, to find out how she adjusted to the culture. And we take a trip down memory lane, to the childhood favorite of many elderly people in Taiwan - exploding puffed rice cakes.

If you can avoid the traffic and crowds, the fourth day of the Chinese New Year is a good time to go on a break. Shoushan National Natural Park, Taiwan”s first nature park, was opened on December 6 last year, in Kaohsiung City. There”s no doubt many more visitors than usual will make the most of the beautiful mountain trails during the New Year holidays. However, stricter regulations have been put into place to protect both the visitors and the wildlife. Apart from banning the feeding of the famous Formosan Rock Macaques that live on Shoushan, authorities went one step further to request visitors to not bring food into the park.

Another place for animal lovers to go during the Chinese New Year holiday would be the zoo, where feeding the animals is also banned. At Taipei Zoo, in Taiwan, feeding times are scheduled on a daily basis, and sometimes you will see the keepers making the animals work for their food. This isn”t for the entertainment of the visitors, but rather for the sake of the animals. The zookeepers use food to train their charges, which makes caring for them easier, and simulates life in the wild, so the captive creatures aren”t weakened by the safety and monotony of their caged lives.

The beauty of Eastern Taiwan is a great attraction for many people over the Lunar New Year. With so many cars heading in the same direction, traffic congestion often plagues the coastal Suao-Hualien Highway, which is a narrow and sometimes hazardous road. One Hualien native, Mr. Lin Jiliang林紀良, has made it a habit to personally check the road conditions whenever he can. He puts his findings on the Internet for drivers to read. Mr. Lin”s non-profit service has become a valuable source of information.

Some of Taiwan”s New Year traditions can be seen, in similar forms, in other Asian countries, as Ms. Chen Linfeng(陳琳鳳), a Vietnamese woman in Taiwan, can tell you. Having lived in Taiwan for 12 years, she now knows very well how both cultures celebrate the Lunar New Year, and still observes the Vietnamese way at home. We went to ask her how it is done.

Husband and wife volunteers, Wang Songqiang(王松強) and Liu Youmei(劉幼眉) from Fuding City in China”s Fujian Province have been busy helping plan Tzu Chi”s year-end blessing ceremony, as well as the recent series of aid distributions in the area. The couple has also set up a Water Repentance sutra reading group, for members of their community. Since October last year, they have been hosting weekly book club meetings at their home. Let”s take a look.

Here in Taiwan, many blind people go into the massage therapy business. That”s the route that Ms. Lai Zhiwei from Taichung took, when she lost her eyesight three years ago. But after the joints in her hands started to deform, the visually-impaired woman hatched another plan, to sell tea eggs instead. Let”s see if she cracked the local market.

Nantou County”s Zhushan and Lugu, are the bamboo-growing centers of Taiwan. In our next story, we meet local resident Ye Baolian(葉寶蓮), who was the recent winner of Taiwan”s first Craft Award. The artist uses her weaving skills, to make beautiful and practical products from bamboo.

On Laying the Path

One person paving the road will not get far, but with help from far and wide, the job can be done easily. We should appreciate, respect and love one another.

We should form good affinities, like farmers who plant and harvest, and turn a tree into a forest to provide shade for those in need.

Not so long ago, in traditional markets in Taiwan, you would hear the warning cry of the puffed rice seller, followed by a loud bang, that announced the latest batch of sweet and sticky puffed rice cakes, would be ready soon. Called pong-bi-phang in Taiwanese, these old-fashioned cakes used to be every child”s favorite. In today”s episode, of our series on vanishing trades in Taiwan, we open up the memory black box, and transport you back, to the heyday of exploding puffed rice.

Another product that can be made from exploding puffed rice is rice bran. In our next story, we meet a young couple, who make rice bran in the traditional way - using an old artillery shell from World War II. When we went to meet them, they were still getting over the recent loss of the husband”s father, who founded the family business. The couple say, they are determined to continue the tradition, of making the purest rice bran in Taiwan.

On the east coast of Taiwan, the Hualien District Agricultural Research Station is helping local farmers switch to growing organic angelica, which is usually imported from abroad to make herbal medicine. 1. TaiwanUsing Fotiaoqiang as the base
On the third day of the Chinese New Year my true love said to me: ”Isn”t there anything else to eat apart from leftovers?” The holiday period is all about family reunions and days of feasting. During the break, people usually stock up on groceries for the New Year”s dinner. And while good company and good food is in the spirit of the holiday, the leftovers do tend to build up in the refrigerator. Instead of letting the food go to waste, for our first story today, we asked an expert homemaker, to demonstrate how to give the classic new year dish, Fotiaoqiang(佛跳牆), or mixed casserole, a new lease of life, by turning it into fusion dishes, using ingredients that are readily available in your kitchen.

Using leftover ingredients
If that didn”t get your creative juices flowing, we have some more tips in our next story, about what to do with uneaten black fungus, goji berries, and sweet potatoes. With a bit of imagination, you can turn leftovers into delicious and healthy treats.

Everything a house needs
If you have excess food or other items at home, you could always consider donating them to a Goods Bank, so they can be passed on to people in need. One such bank in Taiwan is helping disadvantaged families who have not succeeded in applying for government support. The Goods Bank provides them with all kinds of things, donated by the public. Let find out how it works.

A salon of great love
As Tzu Chi continues to grow throughout China, in almost every city, you will find content and grateful people, who are keen to cash in their blessings, and support the cause. In Fuding of Fujian Providence, Kong Baoling孔寶玲 is one of the many residents who quietly support Tzu Chi behind the scenes. A beautician by trade, although she usually works more than 10 hours in a day, Kong Baoling still willingly attends Tzu Chi events, where she provides free hair cuts. She also keeps bamboo coin banks in her store, and discusses Tzu Chi and its missions with her customers, hoping to introduce more people to the NGO.

Finally accepted into college
Part of Tzu Chi”s charity work in China”s Guizhou Province includes the New Shoots Scholarship program, which is for students in need. As well as helping school children financially, the volunteers encourage them to face their predicaments with a positive frame of mind. One such recipient is Li Xiaopo李小波. And here is her story.

Rare show of shadow play
Today is the third day of the Chinese New Year, which is usually a time to go out on excursions, or visit friends and members of your extended family. But most people in Taiwan will probably not be going to see a shadow play today. This traditional art, which originated during the Han dynasty in China, used to be very popular. At its peak, there were nearly 100 roving theater groups in Taiwan, which toured all over the island, performing at temple festivals and other gatherings. But now there are only four left: all in Kaohsiung city. In today”s episode of our continuing series on jobs with a difference in Taiwan, we take a glimpse into the marvelous world of shadow puppetry.

Shadow boxing
One of the four remaining shadow play theaters in Taiwan is the Yongxingle troupe. The theater company is run by three generations of the same family, including national treasure Mr. Zhang Sui張歲, who is 84 years old. To keep the tradition of shadow play alive, his son, Zhang Xinguo張新國, updates the old stories, with some modern dialogue and slap-stick comedy, to please the children.

From waste to artwork

Staying in Taiwan, we meet modern artist Lin Xiaoming(林孝明) from Hualien, for our next story. Working in a scrap yard, the prolific artist is in charge of turning unwanted metal into works of art. Over the past 10 years, he has created over 100 pieces, giving scrap metal a second lease of life.

At Chinese New Year, most people in Taiwan like to have a drink or two, and usually regret it the next morning. Of course, heavy drinking can seriously harm your health. That”s why Tzu Chi is encouraging villagers in an indigenous community in Hualien to try tea instead of alcohol. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

At this time of family reunions, spare a thought for the people who are far from home. When Maria from the Philippines came to Taiwan to marry a local man, many years ago, she cried every day because of homesickness, bringing her relationship with her new husband to a breaking point. It wasn”t until three years ago, when Maria signed up for Tzu Chi”s foreign spouse class, that she met new friends and began to smile more often. Seeing her positive change, Maria”s husband was also inspired to join Tzu Chi.

Another foreigner in Taiwan, who had an easier time when she arrived here last year, is American citizen Kari Schiro. Although Kari had to adjust to the traffic and other aspects of life, she is now settled in, and even volunteering at a local service center for expats. Let”s hear her story.

Taiwan is becoming increasingly popular for foreigners, with its diverse culture and colorful traditions. In our next report, we meet 21-year-old Gao Yi高藝, a student from China, who was amazed by what the island has to offer.

Contentment is a blessing; discontentment brings misfortune.

Around the world, Tzu Chi”s Jing Si Halls provide a place where people can come for spiritual cultivation. Those who help maintain the cleanliness of the Halls are called Field of Blessings volunteers. Today, we introduce you to a group of these volunteers that maintains Changhua”s Jing Si Hall, in Taiwan, all year round.

Tzu Chi volunteer Xia Xiaohua夏小華 from Fuding City, Fujian Province, joined Tzu Chi following her husband”s death from a heart attack two years ago. The tragedy left Xiaohua heartbroken for months. Fortunately, fellow volunteer Chen Shuihua 陳水花stopped by, every day, to accompany the grief-stricken widow, and helped Xiaohua overcome her depression through revealing details of her own loss.

Staying in China, Luodian of Guizhou Province is one of the poorest counties in the country. Since first setting foot here in 1998, Tzu Chi has regularly carried out various charity projects. What”s more, the work attitude of the volunteers inspired local officials to personally take part in Tzu Chi”s work.

On Spreading Warmth
Tzu Chi volunteers understand the suffering of the poor and nurture the land with love; their actions bring sunshine-like warmth.
Living bodhisattvas are farmers, who cultivate the field with compassion, and uphold the spirit of the Buddha, by opening up the door of charity work for suffering beings.

Go to any Daoist temple festival in Taiwan, and you will see offerings of fresh fruit and flowers on the altar, along with dozens of plates of food. In the past, frugal farmers used to offer the gods representations of animal sacrifices, made out of rice flour and sugar, and cooked in a steamer. But with changing times, these traditional cakes have slowly disappeared. In our next story, we go in search of Taiwan”s steamed cakes.

While fewer and fewer people these days buying the animal-shaped cakes you just saw in our last story, there are still some bakers who are working to keep the tradition alive. In Kaohsiung, master cake maker Wu Maoxiong has been in the business since he was 14 years old. While most of his peers switched to bread and western-style cakes and biscuits, he and his son are sticking to the old ways.(吳茂雄)

In our final story today, 12th grader Zhang Jing(張敬) from Taichung Special Education School, is troubled by uncontrollable violent mood swings. However, over the past year, he has found a way to stay calm and focused. Let”s find out more.

< Life of Taiwan”s toll booth operators >

In time for the Chinese New Year celebration, TIMA held a free clinic for homeless people in Taiwan”s Changhua County. We meet Feng Xiaoyu封孝玉 from China”s Anhui Province, who has been a part of Tzu Chi”s missions in Quanjiao County for 20 years. And Taiwan”s toll booth collectors will soon be history, as the profession is being replaced by an automated electronic system; we look back at nearly 40 years of toll collection.

●農曆新年期間,人醫會為台灣彰化的街友舉辦義診;
●帶大家認識住在安徽的封孝玉,參予慈濟的活動已經20年;

Thank you for joining us on the first day of the year of Dragon. We start today”s show in Taiwan, where doctors and volunteers from the Tzu Chi International Medical Association, or TIMA, organized a free clinic for homeless people in Changhua, to make sure they had the medication they needed over the long Chinese New Year break.

More on sharing holiday blessings, Lin Mingshun (林明順) runs a restaurant in the Xinshe (新社) District of Taiwan”s Taichung City. He had a tough childhood and also survived a failed business venture. Humbled, the man wants to do meaningful after he regained his footing. Here”s more.

In Taiwan, Tzu Chi has over 5,000 recycling stations and collection points, as well as some 70,000 recycling volunteers. Each year, the volunteers recycle over 2,000 tons of plastic bottles, which are then given to Da Ai Technology, which turns the unwanted waste into green products. Recently, Da Ai Technology set up an exhibition pavilion inside Taichung”s Tzu Chi Hospital. Not only were recycled materials used to construct the center, but every product for sale has a low carbon footprint.

As long as one has faith and love, one will be healthy and peaceful every day.

In our next report, we meet a Tzu Chi care recipient Jiang Mingrong who lives in Taichung”s Fengyuan (豐原) District. Jiang became depressed after her husband passed away from liver cancer 8 years ago and wanted to end her life. She locked herself away from society for some 3 years. It was only until Tzu Chi volunteers came along to support the family that Jiang and her three daughters opened up. Today, the single mother and her children have joined volunteer training. Let”s hear their story.

We now go to China to look at the story of another Tzu Chi volunter. Feng Xiaoyu(封孝玉) of Anhui”s Quanjiao has been a part of Tzu Chi for some 20 years. In 1996, when his wife had to undergo a kidney transplant and dialysis, the couple asked for Tzu Chi”s help. Later the couple repaid Tzu Chi”s generosity by traveling around China helping Tzu Chi take care of the disadvantaged. Feng Xiaoyu also gathered donations from his friends and co-workers and introduced Tzu Chi to those in his life. With members like Feng Xiaoyu and his wife, it is little wonder that Tzu Chi has taken off in China over the past two decades.

《 衲履足跡 》On The Universal Three No”s 談普天三無
Passing on a message can often cause misunderstandings, thus the Master taught us to filter what we hear.
We should learn the spirit of the Universal”s Three No”s, to love and trust people. Despite facing conflicts, we should learn to forgive.

Taiwan”s freeways are actually toll roads. Drivers have to pay a toll of a fixed amount in cash or a toll ticket, when they pass each toll station. When part of Highway 1 was completed in 1974, Taishan Toll Station became the first of its kind in the country. Toll booth collectors also had to be hired. As the country prepares to switch to electronic toll collection, we take a look back at this profession that will soon vanish.

In Taiwan, each toll booth operator has only about three to five seconds to service every vehicle. A busy toll station typically sees more than 200,000 vehicles per day. Due to the monotonous repetitive movement and the occasional road rage exhibited by drivers, the profession has a high turnover rate. Now, we introduce you to a booth collector who has been committed to her job for some 20 years.

When people decide to get married, typically, they hold a wedding banquet and go on honeymoon, while their families and friends buy the newlyweds gifts or offer them cash. Well, that”s not true for Dong Jinyao(董錦耀) and his wife Shi Peijing(施沛晴). The couple decided to donate their banquet and gift money to help the poor in South Africa, and also traveled there to volunteer. We join them at the end of today”s program. Thank you for watching. Again, Happy Chinese New Year.

3,000+ households receive aid
Gripped by the widespread flooding that began at the end of July, 2011, Thailand was finally freed from the ever stretching waters last month. Even though the disaster is officially over, people in Thailand are still struggling to get their lives back on track. Tzu Chi volunteers are continuing their aid relief efforts in the country: the latest being the distributions across six towns and townships in Ayutthaya Province, which handed out relief supplies to 3,496 flood-affected families.

Most performers are Burmese
For their year-end blessing ceremony in Myanmar, Tzu Chi volunteers put together a performance of the Water Repentance musical. Most of the 40 performers were Burmese people, who didn”t speak Chinese, so they had to memorize not only the movements, but the lines as well. Thankfully, their hard work paid off, as audience members walked away inspired.

Knows the way like the back of his hand
Moving to China, Yu Tao is Tzu Chi”s first local volunteer in Anhui Province”s Guzhen County. Following the floods of 2003, Yu Tao helped take Tzu Chi volunteers around to carry out assessments and aid distributions, and very soon he joined their ranks. One of Yu Tao”s main jobs is to find needy children locally, and help them apply for Tzu Chi”s aid. In addition to his work with youngsters, Yu Tao also introduces Tzu Chi and its missions to local people.

Hustle & bustle in the kitchen
In just a couple of days the Chinese world will be celebrating the lunar New Year. Staying in China, but moving to Fujian Province, Tzu Chi volunteers prepared a reunion feast for New Year”s Eve at the Fuding Hospital for the hard-working doctors and nurses who do not have the chance to spend the holiday with their families.

Cheer for seniors
Here in Taiwan, festivity is also in the air as everyone prepares their homes and food for the imminent holiday. In Hualien, Tzu chi volunteers visited a rehab center, an orphanage and a nursing home with Master Cheng Yen”s New Year blessings and red envelops, to bring some festive warmth to those living away from their families.

In Taiwan, the number to dial in case of an emergency is 119. The caller is routed to a fire department dispatch center, which will provide the necessary assistance. The line is open 24 hours every day, and responds to all emergencies. Once on mission, the rescue workers treasure every second as it could be the difference between life and death.

Putting out a fire as a team
Nowadays, rescue missions have greatly diversified and so firefighters have to learn various skills. Only by being thoroughly prepared, can these rescue workers save lives in emergencies. We now take you through the training courses available to Taiwan”s firefighters.

We start today”s show in Guatemala, where after an earthquake in September last year, the Central American country then suffered severe flooding, last month. People”s lives were thrown into disarray after the disasters, and many victims had no means to rebuild their damaged homes. In the aftermath of the flooding, Tzu Chi volunteers held several aid distributions. Recently, they returned to Santa Rosa Province, to carry out assessment work for further aid.

Here in Taiwan, the weather has been cold and wet over the past few days. Tzu Chi volunteers from Banqiao decided to help Taipei”s homeless stay warm by delivering them scarves and crackers. But in order to hand out their gifts, the volunteers first had to find the recipients. And so, the volunteers spent much of the night looking in hidden corners, where the homeless spend their nights.

In Central Taiwan, Tzu Chi volunteers and TIMA medical staff regularly visit senior residents, living in remote areas of the region. Recently, the team made their way back to Miaoli County”s Zhuolan. Joining them this time was a Chinese exchange student from Beijing University, who found making the house calls an unforgettable experience.

Everything from protecting the Earth to doing good for humankind begins with ourselves.

In China”s Anhui province, many of Tzu Chi”s young scholarship recipients in Guzhen固鎮 County, were uncovered after consulting local teachers, like Wang Xingcun王星存 who introduced them to needy student Zhang Didi張迪迪. Actually, Zhang Didi remembers Tzu Chi, when volunteers came to her township, following the floods of 2003.

Songs and happy special moments, seem to go wherever Tzu Chi volunteer Yang Jiaxiong goes. The 72-year-old from Tainan, in south Taiwan, volunteers at Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital every month. When he tours the wards, he takes a bag with him, from which he pulls musical instruments and magic tricks, to entertain the patients. The lively man, who is a former patient, says his life really began when he started volunteering.

Tzu Chi volunteer Liu Wenling, from Taichung in central Taiwan, had a murky past, which was further clouded when she was diagnosed with several types of cancer. However, the silver lining came when she was introduced to Tzu Chi, and began sorting recyclables, and collecting charity donations. Today, Ms. Liu Wenling is a changed person. Let”s hear her story.

On Spiritual Cultivation

As we cultivate our spirituality, we should also absorb proper values and remain devoted to our faith. At the same time, we need to care about society. Master Cheng Yen ask all Buddhists, whether they practice at home or have joined a monastic order, to keep an open mind, let go of their egos, and care for the world.

In south Taiwan, if you go down Kaohsiung City”s Wufu 5th Road, you might notice the sweet smell of freshly sliced wood, that comes from the bamboo steamer shops nearby. People used to flock to the area, to buy handmade steamers. However, the industry now seems to be running out of steam, in the face of fierce competition, from cheap Chinese imports. Let”s take a look at this sunset industry.

As we saw in our last report, the few remaining steam basket shops on Kaohsiung”s Wufu 5th Road have not been able to recruit young people, and the industry is on the verge of disappearing. However, as we find out in our next story, hope is not yet lost. One store has recruited a young man, who is determined to carry on the tradition.

●A heartwarming story from China, as a struggling single-parent family, in Anhui province, turns down the offer of financial aid from Tzu Chi volunteers.

●And, in our continuing series on the sunset industries of Taiwan, we investigate the race to save the red turtle cake mold makers.

Opening of a new Da Ai school

Three elementary schools in Taiwan”s Kaohsiung area were buried underneath mudslides, brought down by Typhoon Morakot, in 2009. After seven months of work, one of them, Minzu Elementary School, celebrated its reopening, at its new location, in Shanlin Da Ai Village. The ceremony was attended by government leaders, members of the community, and Tzu Chi volunteers.

New Minzu Elementary

After Typhoon Morakot left a trail of destruction through southern Taiwan in 2009, Tzu Chi began a series of relief programs, to help the victims of landslides and flooding. Construction projects included permanent housing communities, to help residents relocate to lower ground. As we just saw, in Shanlin Da Ai village, Tzu Chi held a ceremony, to hand over the newly rebuilt Minzu Elementary School, to the community. Though classes haven”t started yet, the children are already all looking forward, to the next semester.

Use drugs correctly

Taiwan celebrates National Pharmacist Day on January 15th, every year. At the Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, superintendent Jian Shouxin(簡守信) personally gives each chemist a present, to thank them for their hard work. This year, the pharmacists put together some songs and skits, to help educate the patients, and their relatives, on the right way to use medication.

Tzu Chi and Wang Lu

In China”s Anhui province, grade-A student, Wang Lu has been taking care of her bedridden mother, for the past ten years. The community comes together, to help the loving daughter; but when Tzu Chi came to help, knowing that the foundation”s money comes from donations, she refused to accept financial aid.

(4)Hospital patients in good hands

Tzu Chi volunteer Li Meiying from south Taiwan, missed out on a full education in childhood, but she is blooming at Dalin Hospital. She may struggle to fill out some of the forms, but she is gifted in other areas. Let”s find out why, Li Meiying, is one of the most popular volunteers, at Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital.

It”s all a state of mind

Wang Dingxia is a Tzu Chi care recipient, turned volunteer, from Changhua. When his wife developed a brain tumor, and his investments failed, it was Tzu Chi volunteers who helped him through the tough time. His wife”s dying wish was to be a volunteer, so Wang realized her dream, by becoming one for her.

The turtle cake mold makers

In Taiwan, red turtle cakes are a common festival offering, because turtles represent longevity and red, good fortune. The cakes, which are shaped like a turtle”s shell, are made with mold, called a guiyin龜印. Today, most molds are made of plastic. But, in our next story we introduce you to one of the few remaining carpenters, who carves turtle cake molds, from wood.

Each mold tells a unique story

In our last report, we saw master carpenter Zheng Yongbin鄭永斌. As well as making turtle cake molds, he also collects them, and has around 800 in his collection. Each one, tells a different story.

A cancer patient turned volunteer

Preserving Taiwan glove puppetry

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Dennis Wu. Thank you for joining us.

●A week before the year of Dragon arrives, residents of Laiyi in Pingtung County displaced by Typhoons Morakot and Fanapi move in to permanent homes prepared by Tzu Chi.

●After a cancer patient checked into Dalin”s Tzu Chi Hospital, she was inspired to become a hospital volunteer after her recovery.

Grand moving-in for Laiyi community

Typhoons Morakot and Fanapi, which thrashed Taiwan in 2009 and 2010 respectively, caused havoc throughout the island. Laiyi village in Pingtung County bore the brunt of the two disasters, losing many of its houses to gravel slides that were caused by flooding. Now the area is no longer safe for habitation. So there was cause for celebration on the weekend, when Laiyi villagers moved into permanent homes, in the second phase of Tzu Chi”s re-housing project.

Old Laiyi still in ruins

Before villagers moved into their safe homes in New Laiyi Village, whenever it rained, they would be on a lookout to see if they need to flee. In our next report, we follow Da Ai reporters to revisit the old Laiyi tribal community, to understand the extent of damage caused by the gravel slides brought down by Typhoons Morakot and Fanapi.

New house, new beginning

At the New Laiyi Settlement, one resident Nan Guixiong - who is a retired woodcarving teacher - risked his life to document with his camera the extent of damage left behind by Typhoons Morakot and Fanapi. Having lost his studio to the floods brought on by Typhoon Morakot, Nan Guixiong was eager to move his family to a safer place, and was ecstatic when his application to move into the New Laiyi Settlement was successful. Now, he and his family are preparing to restart their lives, away from the dangers of natural disasters that threatened their very lives.

Winter relief in Longji Township

In China”s Jiangsu Province, Tzu Chi volunteers brought winter relief supplies to Longji隴集 Township of Suyang County. The supplies were then handed out to 591 families of 1,802 people. Volunteers also thoughtfully prepared hot pots to help keep residents warm.

(3)Hospital patient to hospital volunteer

Someone who has reduced her wants is Tzu Chi hospital volunteer Li Shumin李淑敏. She used to be obsessed with making money, and held down three jobs. But she was forced to slow down when she contracted cancer, and, when she checked into Tzu Chi Dalin Hospital in south Taiwan, she was touched by the care she received from hospital volunteers, and decided to become one herself, after she got better.

Care recipient turns volunteer

Staying in Taiwan, in Taichung, 30-year-old Lin Xiuxiong林秀雄 was involved in a vehicle accident 15 years ago which left his entire body paralyzed. After that, the young man cut himself off from the rest of the world. Luckily, the love and care from his mother, and charity organizations, deeply moved and inspired Lin to open up his heart again.

Traditional ”budaixi” puppetry

In Taiwan, pretty much anyone over 40 years old was once a fan of budaixi. Budaixi is glove puppetry that originated from China”s southeast provinces during the 17th century. When Chinese immigrants came to Taiwan, they also brought the tradition with them. Though the art has established itself in the country by adapting to changes in time, without proper planning and organization, passing on the heritage may be difficult.

The Red Lantern Master”s dream

As we just saw in our last report, few young people in Taiwan nowadays want to pick up glove puppetry, or budaixi, as a career. To ensure the art is passed down to future generations, Master Su Zhirong蘇志榮 teaches it to students of Ganghe Elementary School in Kaohsiung. Su Zhirong has also earned the title of Red Lantern Master for making exquisite helmet puppets, which he also wishes to pass down.

Special care for disabled

Tzu Chi winter aid distributions in China”s Jiangsu province reached the Sucheng district of Suqian city. To help disabled residents take their bags of rice and bottles of cooking oil back to their villages, the volunteers made personal visits to their homes. The Suqian area of Jiangsu is on a wide plain and has a history of flooding. Tzu Chi came here in 2005 to organize a sight restoration program, helping 2,000 cataract patients to see again in just one year.

380 students receive help

Tzu Chi”s winter aid distribution team in China also made a trip to Guizhou, to hand out scholarship funds to underprivileged students. This time, 380 students received tuition support, and promise to study hard to realize their dreams.

Paying another visit to Dongdang village

Staying in Guizhou, in Dongdang Village of Luodian County, lives a very unique couple. The wife, Luo Chanmei羅嬋妹 is blind, and her husband Luo Xiaoyong羅小勇 is an orphan. The poor couple desperately wanted their own house, but could not afford one, as their entire income comes just from a quarter of an acre of land. But with Tzu Chi”s help, the couple and their two children now have a new house, and a brighter future to look forward to.

(2)Helping elderly patients register

Many elderly and illiterate people in Taiwan struggle when they go to hospital, because they cannot navigate the registration process. Noticing the problem, college professor Lu Hongyi盧鴻毅 decided to become a hospital volunteer because the confused patients remind him of his own parents.

Cosmetic improvement

Breast cancer treatment traditionally involves the partial or complete removal of the breast to eradicate cancerous cells. The latest breakthrough in breast cancer treatment is called oncoplastic breast surgery, whereby tumors of less than three centimeters can be removed along with some tissue, without forfeiting the entire breast. The procedure is most suitable for early stage breast cancer patients.

A creative idea

Staying in Taiwan, Kaohsiung volunteer Liao Qingcai and his wife were a part of Tzu Chi since the 90”s. Sadly, a few years ago, Liao”s wife passed on. But the widower continued with his efforts on recycling work.

94,000 without proper medical care

Tzu Chi has been working with the UN refugee agency- UNHCR in Malaysia since 2004 to offer free medical care to refugee communities. At the free clinics that take place in Selayang, in Selangor, in 2011 alone doctors treated more than 1,000 refugees. The local Tzu Chi chapter recently organized a thank-you party for a group of volunteer -who are also refugees - who serve as interpreters at the free clinics.

First, slice a bamboo into 200 slivers

Among Taiwan”s many sunset industries is bamboo weaving. The work requires a bamboo stalk to be sliced into a couple of hundred evenly sized slivers. While weaving, the artisan”s hands are bound to get cut. And as the profit margin is also very small, no wonder the industry is on its last legs. We meet two master bamboo weavers in Changhua County”s Lugang to hear their story.

A miniature version of the original

Like in the report we just saw, in the old days, people used bamboo to weave many household items. One of them is a rice mill called ”tulong”, which was an important tool for rice farmers. Though the tulong has long been obsolete, a master craftsman in Taiwan”s Lugang still knows how to make them. He also produces a miniature version, which is fully operational.

Much-needed items arrive

Typhoon Washi, which brought flash floods to southern Philippines in mid-December last year, left many communities in ruins. Beginning December 28, Tzu Chi volunteers carried out a three-day aid distribution of rice in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. Due to a holdup in the shipment of aid supplies, other relief items didn”t arrive on time. But, in the latest distribution in Cagayan de Oro, everything was in place for 8,627 families. Many of the aid recipients made a donation to reciprocate the care they received.

A package full of tasty food

For the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, volunteers from Tzu Chi”s Selangor branch in Malaysia put together care packages for care recipients, which they then personally delivered. As usual, the volunteers also brought a sense of respect and love to every household they visited.

Early visit to District 9, Ho Chi Minh

From Malaysia to Vietnam, where local Tzu Chi volunteers go to care for residents of district 9 in Ho Chi Minh city every month. Most of the 45 households on Tzu Chi”s care list are single-parent families. The volunteers bring the struggling families between 23-33 US dollars, to help them get by.

(1)Trauma on the freeway

In our next story we introduce you to Tzu Chi volunteer Ou Lixue歐麗雪 from Kaohsiung, who serves at Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital. For her, the drive to the hospital is doubly difficult, because she is still haunted by a road accident that happened when she was 14 years old. Her leg was amputated after the crash. So, driving on the freeway, and visiting the hospital, both bring back memories of the crash. But now, Ou Lixue uses her past experience to encourage other patients.

Getting ready for big handout

We”ll have more stories on devoted volunteers like Ou Lixue in the next few days. But back to today, Tzu Chi”s winter relief distributions in China”s Jiangsu Province were carried out at 10 different locations. One of the points was in Suyang County”s Suqian City. It was also the first large scale distribution in the city.

Gifts for the New Year

We stay on the topic of Tzu Chi”s nationwide winter distributions in China for our next story. (CG)This week in Luodian County of Guizhou Province, Tzu Chi volunteers delivered aid relief to residents in Muyin and Pingyan townships. 2,452 households collected relief items that included rice, oil, snacks and winter clothes. The volunteers who organized the aid distributions also carried out home visitations to the poorer villages to deliver their seasonal greetings.

Special shoes for the opera

In Taiwan, an increased demand for handmade shoes saw the establishment of many factories in Kaohsiung, from the 1950”s to the 1970”s. Embroidered shoes were particularly popular, and were even exported to Japan. However, as time went by, people stopped wearing the traditional footwear. Now, there is only one store left in southern Taiwan, where embroidered shoes are still made by hand.

Passing on skills

Next, we meet 74-year-old Chen Zhonghe who has been making embroidered shoes for more than 60 years. The master craftsman even had a factory of his own, when embroidered shoes were much sought after. However, Chen now stands as the only one Kaohsiung who still makes these traditional footwear. Luckily, his son Chen Jianlin returned to help keep the family business alive.

Residents line up despite heat

Honduras was hit by flooding in October last year, as heavy rain swept through the Central American county. Tzu Chi carried out a series of disaster relief programs in the aftermath of the crisis. This month, volunteers from the United States, El Salvador, and Honduras, worked together to hold the last emergency aid distribution, for flood victims. The event that took place in the city of Morcavia, was also accompanied by a year-end blessing ceremony, where volunteers and locals came together to pray for a world free of disasters.

20,000 relief packs

On the first day of the distribution in Honduras, volunteers handed out food, while on the second day, they concentrated on clothes and blankets. To get ready for the big event, the care-givers spent three days packing 20,000 bags of clothing.

To better accommodate residents

We move to China for our next story, where, on Sunday, Tzu Chi carried out winter relief distributions in ten different locations, across Shuyang(沭陽) and Suqian(宿遷) counties in Jiangsu Province. The events wouldn”t have been possible without the support of over 500 volunteers. The huge show of support was the result of Tzu Chi”s good work in China, over the past 18 years.

Guizhou”s poor flock to Panlong

The relay of love carried on in Yunnan Province, where local residents also lent a helping hand at Tzu Chi”s three-day winter relief distribution. A local official carried supplies for residents in the Wuhua五華 district, while at the event in Panlong盤龍 district, a Muslim woman and her Christian husband lent a bipartisan helping hand.

Dough figures stand the test of time

Not so long ago in Taiwan, at temple festivals you would see carefully crafted figures, made of dough, placed on the altar, to represent offerings to the gods. But because temples don”t hold festivals every week, the makers of these beautiful models struggled to get by. In today”s episode of our continuing series on the more unusual trades in Taiwan, we find out if we will soon see the last of these stalls, set up outside temples, with dough figurines on sold on chopsticks.

Wus started model making 40 years ago

Despite the slump in the dough modeling business, the Wu family, who you just saw in the last story are keeping up the old tradition. After father, Wu Qijun, and son, Wu Junde, a third generation of dough figurine makers is picking up the baton. In a moment we will go to Mr. Wu Junde”s family home, which he has turned into a dough figurine factory, complete with an exhibition area, and a classroom, to teach children the tricks of the trade. But first, we find out how it all started, from Mr. Wu senior.

Helping a disadvantaged family

As Chinese New Year approaches, many residents here in Taiwan are already busy cleaning their homes in advance of the holiday. But what about people who are too frail or incapacitated to do the spring cleaning With them in mind, doctors and nurses at Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital in south Taiwan, gave up their weekend to go to the Lin family home, to help with the New Year”s housework. With the father partially-paralyzed by a stroke, the responsibility for the household chores, has fallen on the shoulders of the eldest daughter. However, since she is also the family”s breadwinner, she doesn”t have a lot of spare time to tidy up. Thankfully, with the volunteer”s help, the Lin household is now ready to meet the Lunar New Year, in style.
