TC volunteers keeping festival site clean

Why can`t we focus on tasks?

Helping abandoned babies in Taiwan

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I`m Helen Liao. Thank you for joining us.

Coming up in the show today, we join the 2,000 Taiwan Tzu Chi volunteers, as they are promoting environmentalism, at the Lantern Festival in Hsinchu(新竹).

As we live in an age, in which, we are constantly surrounded by information and technology, let`s find out why focused attention, seems so hard in today`s world.

In our new feature report on ”Caring for Children”, we visit a shelter, that cares for abandoned babies in Eastern Taiwan.

Environmentalism at Lantern Festival

Taiwan`s annual lantern festival was held this year in Hsinchu(新竹), and saw over 10,000 visitors participating. To keep the festival site clean, Tzu Chi mobilized 2,000 shifts of volunteers, to clean up and promote environmentalism. To encourage members of the public to join Tzu Chi`s ranks, Tzu Chings invented a catchy slogan and made sign-boards with eco-friendly LED bulbs. Let`s take a look.

New recycling station

Following a year of negotiation, the Tzu Chi Bu-kit Je-lu-tong Recycling Station, in Selangor of Malaysia, finally received government approval to begin operations. The site, which was once full of garbage, was transformed into a recycling station, to take on the responsibility of protecting the environment. On the day of the opening ceremony, the mayor of Shah A-lam City also attended.

TC New Year celebrations continue

Tzu Chi`s Lunar New Year celebrations continue around the globe. Today, we go to Taiwan`s Penghu(澎湖) and Taipei, where New Year blessing ceremonies, welcomed newly certified Tzu Chi commissioners to the Tzu Chi family. But first, we go to Indonesia, where Jakarta Tzu Chi volunteers, held their New Year blessing ceremony, which was joined by participants of different races and faiths.

1001 sights and sounds

We live in an age, in which, we are surrounded by information 24 hours a day, that routinely draw our attention, away from what we happen to be focusing on. The result is that our attention span, to focus for long periods of time has diminished, as our brains adapt to this new way of interacting with the world. In our next report, we take a look at how and why focused attention, seems so hard in today`s world.

Taipei TCH treat care recipients

Recently staff from Central TIMA, referred one of their care recipients, Mr. Feng(風), who is a cerebral palsy patient, to the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital. Mr. Feng(風) has been suffering from a severe toothache, for over three months, which has restricted his food intake. Thankfully, medical staff at the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital not only fixed his dental problems, but also treated his si-nu-si-tis. Before his discharge, the doctors and nurses even held a farewell gathering to wish him all the best, in the future.

Helping abandoned babies

Today, we start a new series of feature reports on caring for children, and first go to the East Coast of Taiwan, to visit the Hannah`s Hope Taiwan. The foundation was established in 2011, by the Kernel Of Wheat Foundation, and its main goal is to care for babies, that were abandoned by their families. The staff at the Hannah`s Hope Taiwan wish, to provide a safe and happy environment for these children, while raising awareness on how to avoid unwanted pregnancy.

Helping out local volunteers

In Zimbabwe, there are only a few Tzu Chi volunteers, so local volunteers are especially important, in helping to carry out home visitations. However, some local volunteers, are not much better off, than those care recipients they visit. One such example is Ten-dai Nglu-lube, who`s roof was made out of fabric and tarps. Recently, local volunteers came together, to repair her home by installing a new tin roof.

Regaining a healthy body

Tzu Chi volunteer Shen Jinzhi(沈金職) had fallen ill, and thought, she might not have long to live. Fortunately, while she was taking part, in a hospital volunteer training program, She discovered her symptoms, to be similar to that of a brain tumor. After receiving treatment, Shen(沈) has completely recovered, and is now giving back to society, as a way to show her gratitude. Let`s take a look.

We go to the United States at the end of the show, since 2011, US Tzu Chi volunteers have been promoting Jing Si Aphorisms in hotels. Recently, the volunteers arrived at San Jose, California, to promote Jing Si Aphorisms to the local Fountain Inn. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

Recycling at lantern festival

The annual lantern festivals held throughout Taiwan, are an event not to miss, However, with the large crowds also come large amount of garbage. Hence, the organizing committees of the lantern festival, in both Kaohsiung (高雄) and Hsinchu (新竹) invited Tzu Chi volunteers, to promote environmental awareness at the festival.

Celebrating Lantern Festival

In Taiwan, to bring the cheer of the Lantern Festival to the homeless, Tzu Chi volunteers in Pingtung(屏東) provided free haircuts, a free clinic, and prepared vegetarian dishes for over 200 residents without shelter. As well, the volunteers also went to a nursing home, to celebrate the lantern festival with the senior residents.

Rebuilding bathroom for residents

Staying in Taiwan, starting in 2011, Tzu Chi volunteers have been rebuilding homes and bathrooms for residents in Jiamin(佳民) Village of Hualien(花蓮), as they hope to create a safer community. On February 24th, Tzu Chi volunteers once again visited the care recipients in the village, and this time were accompanied by the local police chief, who is a Christian but says, that love has no boundary between race or faith.

Distributing aid to needy residents

In Canada, over the past years, Tzu Chi volunteers have collaborated with local food banks, to organize winter aid distributions. Recently, Tzu Chi volunteers distributed a total of 251 aid packs and provided hot meals for needy residents in Port Moody.

Help canvass for donations

Moving back to Asia, in Malaysia, the children of Penang Tzu Chi Kindergarten, brought their hand-decorated bamboo coin banks, to the local Jing Si Hall and dialysis center, to canvass for donations, for the construction, of the Tzu Chi Dialysis Center and Education Center.

Musical of Buddhist sutra

Last weekend, on February 24th, the Philippines Tzu Chi Chapter put on the musical ren-dition of the Sutra of Profound Gratitude to Parents, at the Newport Performing Arts Theater. The show which gathered performers from all walks of life, deeply moved some 1,500 participants. Let`s take a look.

Rejoining the ranks of Tzu Chi

In Fengyuan(豐原) District, Taichung(台中), re-gressed Tzu Chi volunteer Guo Shunzheng(郭順正) had met with some difficulties in his business, that left him depressed; however, after a devastating fire last year, Tzu Chi once again became part of his life. Now, Guo(郭) is back to Tzu Chi and happily doing recycling.

Helping poor rice famers

In 2012, to help poor rice famers in Myanmar, Tzu Chi volunteers provided them with rice seeds. As these famers had good harvests this year, many of them decided to donate some of their harvest to Tzu Chi. Thanks to their generosity, more than 20,000kg of rice was collected. Let`s take a look.

Caring for senior residents

In California of the United States, Ce-rritos Tzu Chi volunteers and Tzu Chings, often visit the Windsor Palm Care Center each month, to put on a series of performances to cheer up residents. On the other hand, in Manchester of the United Kingdom, Tzu Chi volunteers brought a New Year`s dragon dance, and hot pot meal to a local senior home, while volunteers in London also carried out their nursing home visits, where they all managed to put a smile on each of the residents` faces.

Family gathering with TCU students

As the Lunar New Year holidays ended, students resumed their studies at school. For students from the Department of Communication Studies at the Tzu Chi University, many of them left their hometown to pursue their studies in Hualien(花蓮). To alleviate their homesickness, Tzu Chi volunteers often visited to care for them. At the gathering this time, volunteers seized the opportunity to discuss life and death issues with the students.

Worldwide New Year celebration

Vision impairment top students

Dancing beads in TW`s Pingtung

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I`m Wendy Chen. Thank you for joining us.

Coming up in today`s show, we join Tzu Chi volunteers in the United States, the Dominican Republic and Australia, as they hold New Year celebrations.

In Taiwan, we meet two senior high school students, who despite suffering from vision impairment, are top achievers in school.

And, a father-and-daughter pair in Taiwan`s Pingtung, is incorporating indigenous glass beads with modern dancing.

TC`s New Year blessing ceremonies

Tzu Chi Chapters around the world continue to hold blessing ceremonies to embrace the Lunar New Year. The celebration organized by the Tzu Chi Australia Chapter, saw a local Australian join volunteers, in the sign language performance of ”Vow in Action”. Meanwhile in the Dominican Republic, 160 local residents took part in Tzu Chi`s New Year blessing ceremony. And, finally, Tzu Chi Chapters and Liaison Offices throughout the United States, also held New Year celebrations on February 16th.

Paying neighbors a visit

Though the Lunar New Year holidays have come to an end, students from Malaysia`s Johor Bahru Tzu Chi Kindergarten, visited their neighbors to give their New Year greetings. Through these visits, the students also learned about the traditions and customs of the Chinese New Year.

We want to be doctors

Moving to Taiwan, we meet two senior high school students, Lin Tingyu(林庭妤) and Yu Yayun(余亞芸). Lin has been blind in her right eye since birth; however, with determination, she achieved a perfect score on her high school com-pe-ten-cy test. As for Yu(余), although she suffers from o-cu-lar hyper-tension, she vows to become a doctor one day to help the needy in remote areas.

10 years of free dental clinics

Anything great begins with a simple idea, followed by actions and per-se-ve-rance. In July 2002, three Tzu Chings in Brisbane, Australia, along with a Tzu Chi volunteer, came together to organize free dental clinics in the remote areas of Queensland. However, the service came to a temporary stop, when the government was unable to provide funding for medical equipment. Nevertheless, believing what they were doing was right, the volunteers saw the crisis as a turning point. Today, the 4-person team has grown to over 100 volunteers, participating at each of the free clinics.

Dance of lazurite beads

In our next report, we travel to Pingtung`s (屏東) Sandimen(三地門), to meet indigenous dancer, Liao Yingjie(廖英傑), who is a member of the Paiwan(排灣) Tribe, and had always dreamed of incorporating the legend la-zu-rite beads with indigenous dance. Today, Liao(廖) and his daughter, also a performer of modern dance, are working together to form an indigenous glass bead dance.

Giving despite disability

46-year-old Taichung resident Ju Zhenzhong(車振忠) is a sufferer of An-ky-lo-sing Spon-dy-li-tis. Due to his condition, Ju had withdrawn himself from the world and closed his heart to those around him. Fortunately, Tzu Chi volunteers were there to help him through the tough times. Today, Ju Zhenzhong(車振忠) can now be frequently seen at the local recycling station, giving back for the love he received.

Senior TC volunteer, Lin A-xia

Senior Tzu Chi volunteer, Lin A-xia(林阿蝦), joined Tzu Chi some 3 decades ago and has since been leading by example in spreading the organization`s seeds of love. In total, she has led over 300 volunteers to become certified commissioners, and has been giving every day of her life to the Buddhist NGO. Lin moved to Hualien`s Jing Ai Abode 25 years ago, and despite being 85 years of age today, continues to work as a kitchen volunteer, seizing each moment to give.

We stay in Taiwan at the end of today`s program, members of the Tzu Chi Teachers Association, recently visited the Houpu(後埔) Elementary School in New Taipei City, to promote an anti-drug campaign. And students all gained a better understanding of how detrimental drugs are to our human body. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.

Flooding destroyed crops

The January flooding in Jakarta, Indonesia, did not spare the city of Bekasi, which is located near the western border of the capital. To help some families put food on the table, Tzu Chi volunteers held a distribution to hand out 5kg of rice and 20 packs of instant noodles to each household.

Happy 5th Birthday Indonesia TCH

The Indonesia Tzu Chi Hospital, first started as a free clinic center in 2006, and gained government approval to be upgraded to a hospital in 2008. As this year marks the 5th anniversary of the hospital, a celebration event is held. Let`s take a look.

Cultivating gratitude and wisdom

In the remote mountain areas of Miaoli(苗栗), Taiwan, TIMA volunteers have been caring for the elderly and sick, through free clinics on a regular basis for over 7 years now. Next, we join the volunteers and medical staff at their recent visit.

A senior baseball team in Pingtung

In our next report, we go to Linbian(林邊) Township in Pingtung(屏東) County, to meet the players of the Sunshine Baseball Team. What is special about this team is that the average age of the players is around 70 years old. In spite of their old age, the seniors say, through their story they hope to encourage more people to pursue their dreams.

Come rain or shine

Staying in Taiwan, we meet recycling volunteer Lian Jiasen(連家森) from Taichung`s Dali(大里) District, a cerebral palsy sufferer since birth. It was not until he found the Tzu Chi family at the local recycling station, that 58-year-old Lian was able to open up to the world and appreciate the blessings of simply being alive.

Sold meat to make a living

Recycling work not only helps safeguard our environment, but is also a way to purify our minds. Tzu Chi volunteer, Cai Xuezhu(蔡雪珠), who used to be a pork seller, decided to end her business five years ago after listening to Master Cheng Yen`s teachings. Today, Cai and her husband both joined Tzu Chi`s ranks and have started a new chapter in their lives - one with Tzu Chi and recycling.

Lighting show attracts crowds

Each year, organizers of the Lantern Festival in Central Taiwan, will come up with innovative and cutting-edge concepts which attract large crowds. However, the volume of garbage that is left behind after the event, has always been a headache for the organizing committee. This year, the Taiwan Cultural and Creative Industries invited Tzu Chi, to promote recycling concepts and waste reduction at the festival.

Changing minds and hearts

In Taiwan, Tzu Chi volunteers around the island have been holding regular study groups based on the Water Repentance Sutra, where many have gained wisdom and found new meanings to life. Next, we join the volunteers at their study groups in Zhudong(竹東) Retreat Office in Hsinchu(新竹), and in Xintai(新泰) District of New Taipei City.

Raising funds for Hurricane Sandy victims

In the United States, Hurricane Sandy relief work continues, as the Tzu Chi Academy in Los Angeles, California recently held a charity carnival on February 17th. Tzu Chi volunteers hope to donate the money raised to the disaster survivors.

Passing on my specialty

Back to Taiwan, we meet Tzu Chi volunteer Xutao(許桃), whose life story was once made into a Da Ai TV mini drama. Although diagnosed with breast cancer and having moved into the palliative care ward in Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital, Xu insisted on passing on her special dumpling recipe to her fellow volunteers.

Not able to read a single word, Zhang(張) still managed to memorize all the lyrics and movements.

Today, we take you to the village of Wukuai (五塊) in Yuanchang(元長) Township of Yulin(雲林), to meet farmer Cai Zhenming (蔡振明). As the village of Wukuai(五塊), did not have a library of its own, Cai(蔡) decided to donate 4,000USD, from the sale of an entire year`s harvest, to set up a library for the community.

Celebrations of the Lunar New Year

We kick off today`s program in North America; in Ottawa, Canada, a sign language performance marked the opening of a year-end celebration held by Tzu Chi volunteers, and many organizations came forth to give their thanks, for all the hard work volunteers have done in the past. But first, let`s head over to Miami of Florida, in the United States, where Tzu Chi volunteers participated in a Lunar New Year celebration. As part of the activities, volunteers set up a recycling booth to promote environmentalism, and also displayed DA.AI Technology products.

Sutra musical returns to Penang

Since 2009, volunteers in Malaysia have been touring the country with their sign language musical of the Sutra of Innumerable Meanings. On February 16th, the performance will return to Penang where it all first started. To ensure that as many people as possible can enjoy and perhaps be inspired by the performance, in the week prior, volunteers went door to door to restaurants and households, to let the public know of this wonderful show.

A combination of East and West

In our series of reports on historical sites around Taiwan, each of the historical sites we have visited holds the stories of its era. Today, we take you to Taipei City`s Qingtian(青田) Street, which once held many dormitories built by a group of Japanese professors from Tai-ho-ku Imperial University, during the Japanese colonial period. After Japan was defeated in World War Two, the grounds and buildings of Tai-ho-ku Imperial University were taken over by National Taiwan University, and one of the dorms became the residence of Ma Tingying(馬廷英), a geology professor at NTU. Professor Ma was well-known for his research on “continental drift”, with many of his findings pre-dating European and American scholars by about 15 years. Today, the former Ma residence is owned by the National Taiwan University, but graduates of the university`s geology department have rented the land and are in charge of its operations and restoration.

Dialysis patient shows filial piety

Back to Malaysia, we meet a filial son, Huang Jiapeng(黃嘉朋), who has managed to celebrate each of his mother`s birthday with her, over the past 4 decades, including the recent 91st birthday celebration. As his mother used to be the breadwinner at home, Huang wanted to reciprocate her love, by carrying out his filial duties whenever and wherever needed.

Doing household chores

Teaching children the right values and belief must start at a young age, we stay in Malaysia`s Penang for our next story, and meet the Xie(謝) sisters, who both graduated from the Penang Tzu Chi Kindergarten. 10-year-old Xie Kaien(謝愷恩) and 7-year-old Xie Jiaen(謝家恩), not only help with household chores, but have acquired good habits over the years from studying in Tzu Chi.

Locally grown honey

According to estimates, 70 percent of honey products in Taiwan are fake honey made up of fruc-tose and chemical additives, 20 percent are imported and the remaining 10 percent is locally produced. Despite the good quality of home-grown honey, due to its high price when compared to imported honey, the number of beekeepers in Taiwan continues to decline. In our next report, we meet a couple in Nantou, Li Liyu(李麗玉) and Li Fuliang(李福涼), who is committed to beekeeping 365 days a year, to produce locally grown honey.

Performance by the Miao people

Moving to China`s Guizhou(貴州), Taiwan`s Ministry of Culture and the China Friendship Foundation For Peace and Development, recently joined hands to hold a cross-cultural temple fair. Through the Guizhou(貴州) style performances, visitors gained a better understanding of the area`s culture. Let`s take a look.

In Indonesia’s Jakarta, the monsoon rains in mid-January, left areas of the city under water for nearly a month. As the floodwaters have yet to subside in some areas, the Tzu Chi Indonesia Chapter is again carrying out aid distributions to help disaster victims.

In Taiwan, different groups within Tzu Chi - including young volunteers from Jing Si Books and Cafe and doctors from the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital - sent their New Year’s greeting to Master Cheng Yen through video conference. Whether young or old, all gathered to make a vow to continue walk the Tzu Chi Path for as long as they can.

Also making good use of technology, are the volunteers at the Tzu Chi Kedah Chapter in Malaysia, who joined their counterparts at the Jing Si Abode in Taiwan’s Hualien through video conference calls, to chant sutras together, in praying for a peaceful year ahead.

For many Chinese communities, the Lunar New Year is considered to be the biggest holiday of the year. However, for those living overseas, the festive atmosphere is sometimes absent. To help students get a better understanding of the meaning of the Lunar New Year, Tzu Chi Academies across the United States all hosted events to celebrate the holiday.

Today, in our continuing series on Taiwan’s historical sites, we take you to the Sugar Industry Cultural Park in Taipei’s Wanhua District (萬華). Following the fall of the sugar industry, the Taiwan Sugar Corporation eventually sold the land, and what remained of Taiwan’s sugar trade heritage were three warehouses. And in 2003, the three historic warehouses were declared Taipei’s 106th historical site. In addition, the Ming Hwa Yuan(明華園) Arts and Cultural Group was invited by the Department of Cultural Affairs, to move into the park, thus injecting a further artistic flair into the location.

Back to Malaysia, a group of children from the Penang Tzu Chi Kindergarten visited an organic clothing store, where they had a chance to play with natural dyes. In the process, the children not only learned about cherishing resources, but also went home with their hand-made handkerchief. Let’s take a look.

On Seizing the Moment

If you do not understand impermanence, it is easy to be indolent. We assume there is always a tomorrow, but life is impermanent. Life exists in the space of a breath. So upon meeting good conditions, we need to seize the opportunity and, with gratitude, follow the Buddha’s path.

At the upcoming musical rendition of "Purity, Great Love and Innumerable Meanings", which will be performed this weekend in Malaysia’s Penang, apart from the usual sign language performance, a drumming performance will also be shown. The members of the drum team are Tzu Shaos(慈少) between the ages of 13 and 19, and all playing the instrument for the first time. Despite the difficulties they’ve come across, the students have used every practice session in full, in hopes of putting on a perfect show.

After Tzu Chi volunteer, Huang Meizhen(黃美珍) retired, @ she started visiting the Taichung Tzu Chi Chapter each day to help with kitchen work. Even during the Lunar New Year holidays, she has not missed a day and even brought her daughter along to lend a hand. Here’s more.

At this New Year occasion, Tzu Chi volunteers in Tainan(台南) visited the inmates at the Mingde(明德) Prison, where they put on a short skit expressing the importance of filial piety. Upon seeing the play, many inmates were moved to tears and repented for their past mistakes, and all vowed to fulfill their filial duties after their release.

Staying in Taiwan, we meet two individuals, Yan Ruiqi(顏睿麒) and Chen Louxiang(陳露香), both of whom after joining Tzu Chi and seeing those less fortunate, has not only learned to cherish what they have, but also changed for the better.

We stay in Taiwan at the end of our show; at the New Year gathering organized by the Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, medical staff are divided into groups to help saw bamboos into sections to make coin banks. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.

New Year blessing ceremony

As Chinese communities around the globe, are celebrating the Chinese New Year, Tzu Chi volunteers in Lesotho also organized a blessing ceremony, to welcome the New Year. Among those participating were children attending a deaf-mute school, who have been receiving support from Tzu Chi. To reciprocate Tzu Chi`s love and care, these care recipients and others, put on a special performances at the event. Let`s take a look.

Happy Lunar New Year

Moving to Taiwan, to make this holiday season more meaningful, Mr. Kang(康) and his family returned to Jing Si Abode in Hualien(花蓮) to volunteer. Over there, Mr. Kang`s daughter Kang Yahui(康雅惠) volunteered to sell eco-friendly detergent made by the Jing Si Abode masters. Meanwhile, instead of watching TV or sleeping all day long, the grandchildren of Tzu Chi volunteer Zhang Biping(張碧屏), arrived at the Kaohisung(高雄) Jing Si Hall to volunteer at the flea market.

A healthy alternative

Also in Taiwan, for the Lunar New Year, many Taiwanese burn paper money or incense at local temples, as a way to ask for blessings in the upcoming year. However, to protect the environment, this pratice is excluded in Tzu Chi. At the Taoyuan(桃園) Jing Si Hall, visitors from all walks of life, instead found other ways, to pray for blessings and welcome the New Year.

New Year Celebrations

In China, Tzu Chi volunteers around the nation, held a variety of activities in celebration of the Lunar New Year, to which local residents were invited to take part. During the event, besides putting on a series of performances and sign language shows, volunteers also seized the chance, to introduce Tzu Chi to the participants.

Be a spiritual farmer who cultivates fields of blessings for oneself and others.

The Shilin Official Residence, a historical site

For many Taiwanese, when speaking of the Shilin(士林) Official Residence, a vast stretch of green bo-tanical wonder, usually comes into mind. During the period of Japanese occupation, the residence was a hor-ti-cultural experimental station, where many types of tropical plants could be found. Years later, the location became the residence of the late President Chiang Kai-shek and First Lady Soong May-ling(宋美齡). Until now the place has been preserved to honor its historical value, but also aims to provide insight into the First family`s way of life, while allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding gardens and ecology.

Year-end celebration

In the Philippines, a local volunteer learns about forgiveness through her participation, in the musical adaptation of the Water Repentance Sutra. In turn, when sharing her story at the year-end celebration in Rizal Province, she inspired an audience member to repair her relationship with her family. But first, let`s take a look, at how 300 Filipino volunteers, overcame language barriers, to participate in the sutra performance.

Putting doubt aside to perform

Also in Southeast Asia but in Malaysia, For the upcoming performance of the adaptation of the Sutra of Innumerable Meanings in Penang close to 1,500 volunteers have gathered together. And among the participants is volunteer Lin Cifeng(林慈豐). Due to physical deformity in her fingers, Lin was originally uncertain about participating. But after remembering the teachings of Master Cheng Yen, Lin put aside her doubts, and went on to become her team`s top performer.

On Spreading the Dharma

Teaching the rich to help the poor, or helping the poor to teach the rich-this is the Dharma in action. With the Dharma in their hearts, volunteers strive on behalf of the greater good. By helping sentient beings to harmonize their hearts and minds, a world free of disasters can be achieved.

Bringing love to the needy

Moving back to Taiwan, while most people are on holiday, celebrating the Chinese New Year, TIMA medical staff in both Tainan(台南) and Taichung(台中) are taking this time, to help those living on the fringes of society. Tainan(台南) Tzu Chi volunteers and medical staff, arrived at a homeless service stop, to provide medical treatment. While in Taichung(台中), the TIMA medical staff there, traveled to remote areas to hold free clinics. Let`s take a look.

Keeping healthy with Chinese Medicine

In North America, the Tzu Chi Canada Chapter, held a Traditional Chinese Medicine free clinic and seminar, where practitioners spoke about dealing with stress and depression. At the conclusion of the seminar, patients had an opportunity, to get their health checked by the doctors on hand.

We go to Australia at the end of our show; to help victims of January`s flooding in Queensland, Sydney Tzu Chi volunteers seized every opportunity to fundraise, whether it be canvassing for donations on the streets, or inviting participants at tea gatherings to make contributions. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.

Helping quake survivors

In May of 2012, two earthquakes of 6 and 5.8 magnitude devastated Italy. Although it has been almost eight months since the disaster, thousands of quake victims are still living in temporary shelters. To help, Tzu Chi volunteers from five different countries arrived at the temporary housing camps, to organize two winter aid distributions.

Returning to spiritual heartland

With the Lunar New Year finally here and everyone traveling home for the holidays, many Tzu Chi volunteers in Taiwan are using this time, to return to their spiritual homeland in Hualien(花蓮). At the center of it all, the Jing Si Abode, welcomes the visitors with an atmosphere, that calms the mind, inspires the spirit, and brings joy to the heart of all those present.

Celebrating Chinese New Year

According to Chinese tradition, the second day of the Lunar New Year is a day, when married daughters visit their parents, relatives, and close friends. In Taichung(台中), Taiwan, to celebrate this special day, many decided to visit their local Tzu Chi Chapter with their filled bamboo coin banks. Meanwhile, the Kaohsiung(高雄) Jing Si Hall also held a New Year`s event, which was filled with delicious food and activities for both young and old.

Visiting detention center inmates

Also in Taiwan, instead of heading home to celebrate the second day of the Chinese New Year, Sanxia(三峽) Tzu Chi volunteers, wanted to bring the festive atmosphere to those in a detention center. Volunteers planned the event with singing and dancing, to give the inmates, a temporary escape from their current situation.

With a tranquil and peaceful heart, the road is smooth. With a broad and open heart, the road is wide.

A historical house in Nantou

Staying in Taiwan, we take you to Zhushan (竹山) Township in Nantou (南投) County, to visit a once abandoned traditional court-yard house, which belonged to the Zhang (張) family. Later, a young man named He Peijun (何培鈞) became determined, to restore the historic site to its former glory. Thanks to this dream, the historic site was transformed into a guest-house.

Safeguarding residents` health

In Taiwan, when shops and restaurants are closed for the Lunar New Year, Tzu Chi hospitals continue to be fully staffed. The influx of visitors into the Hualien(花蓮) and Taitung(台東) area, has not allowed staff there, any breathing space, and the larger Hualien(花蓮) Tzu Chi Hospital, has even added more shifts to take care of all the patients.

Tea gathering for medical volunteers

At the Tzu Chi Dialysis Center in Penang, Malaysia, over the past 15 years, medical volunteers have been bringing care to dialysis patients on a daily basis. To express their appreciation, the center`s staff held a tea gathering to offer a big ”thank you” for the volunteers` assistance.

On Leading by Example

The beauty of Tzu Chi is how it works as a team. A team has those who lead and those who follow, each knowing their proper place. Those who lead should do so by personal example, because only then can they inspire those behind to follow them on the path of goodness.

Educate minds and open hearts

On February 16th, Tzu Chi volunteers in Malaysia will put on a performance of the musical adaptation of the Sutra of Innumerable Meaning. Also new to the performance this year, is the recreation of the story of a Tzu Chi Dialysis Center patient. As for the performers, the hours of practice helped them realize the importance of carrying out filial duties.

Recycling work in Penghu

In Taiwan`s off-shore island of Penghu(澎湖), Magong(馬公) recycling volunteers, gather once or twice a month to help load recyclables, that arrive from Jibei(吉貝) by boat, before taking them to the local recycling station. As the event only occurs twice a month, there are usually a lot of garbage to sort through, thus, these recycling volunteers give it their all, as they work to safeguard the planet.

Teaching residents how to save resources

During the Lunar New Year holidays, many families end up purchasing too much food or snacks. To educate members of the public not to waste food, Taiwan People`s Food Bank Association, held an event in Taipei`s Huashan(華山) Creative Park, where residents were shown how to deal with their extra items, by donating them to the needy.

We go to Australia at the end of our show, where Melbourne Tzu Chi volunteers, held a Chinese New Year banquet, for many Taiwanese residents, who are on their working holiday. The volunteers thoughtfully prepared many traditional dishes to ease their homesickness. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.

Celebrate CNY at Jing Si Abode

Over the weekend, as many celebrated the Chinese New Year at home, many Tzu Chi volunteers from around the globe, returned to their spiritual homeland in Hualien, to spend the holiday there. On the eve of the Lunar New Year, kitchen volunteers woke up at 4am, to prepare for the reunion banquet later in the evening. And despite the busy days, volunteers were happy to have the chance to form good affinities with the guests at the Jing Si Abode.

Celebrate in a meaningful way

As it is a tradition for Taiwanese families to spring clean before the start of a new year, the volume of recyclables at recycling stations also increases around this time of the year. Therefore, recycling volunteers at Tzu Chi`s Dongda(東大) Grounds in Taichung(台中) and Tzu Chi`s Sanxia(三峽) Grounds in New Taipei City, spent New Year`s Eve and the first day of the holiday at recycling stations, embracing the year ahead in a different, yet meaningful way.

Sutra of Innumerable Meanings

The musical rendition of the Sutra of In-numerable Meanings was first performed in Hualien, Taiwan in 2007. The show deeply moved Malaysia`s Tzu Chi volunteers, who vowed to take the performance back to their homeland one day. Beginning in 2009, volunteers managed to put on 24 successful performances around Malaysia and, thus, have inspired the love and compassion of many. This year, volunteers brought the musical back to Penang, where it all first started, in hopes of spreading Tzu Chi`s humanitarian spirit further.

Making history accessible

Today, we begin a new series of feature reports to see how historical sites around Taiwan, are being transformed to meet the needs of modern day city dwellers. Free clinic for flood victims
Tzu Chi`s work in Jordan

Care recipients giving back

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I`m Wendy Chen. Thank you for joining us.

Coming up in today`s show, Indonesia Tzu Chi volunteers and TIMA medical staff are holding a free clinic for last month`s flood victims.

In Jordan, Tzu Chi volunteers are buiding longlasting friendship with the Bedouin Tribe through its decade-long charity work.

And, in Taiwan, at a year-end event in Taichung, care recipients are reciprocating Tzu Chi`s help through giving a little of their love.

Free clinic for flood victims

We kick off today`s program in Indonesia; nearly three weeks have gone by since the flooding in Jakarta, however, Tzu Chi volunteers are continuing to care for those affected by the disaster. Apart from helping residents clean up their homes, TIMA medical staff also held a free clinic, in one of the worst hit villages in West Jakarta. Among the doctors participating in the event, many are first timers, and all were deeply moved by the experience.

Year-end aid distributions

Next, in the neighboring country of Malaysia, Tzu Chi volunteers held year-end aid distributions, in both Penang and Malacca, where care recipients were invited to attend. Like in the previous years, apart from a delicious banquet, free clinics and haircut services were also available for participants. In a ceaseless cycle of love, many care recipients also donated their filled bamboo banks, as a token of their appreciation to Tzu Chi.

Learning customs of Lunar New Year

We stay in Malaysia for our next report; before the coming of the Chinese New Year, the Kuala Lumpur Da Ai Educare Center, organized a series of activities to teach students the customs and culture of the traditional holiday and show them how to spend the festival in a peaceful state of mind. Here`s more.

Helping nomadic people

In the past few days, we have learned how Tzu Chi volunteers in Jordan are helping tens of thousands of Syrian refugees, by holding aid distributions and many other relief work. Another group Tzu Chi volunteers have been helping over the past 10 years, is the desert-dwelling Bedouin Tribe. In the past decade, volunteers have built longlasting friendships with these needy residents. In today`s report on ”Compassion for Jordan”, we look at the charity work volunteers have carried out, in order to assist these no-ma-dic tribe members.

Visiting recycling station

Moving to Taiwan, Tzu Chi`s recycling stations not only serve as venues, for members of the public to give a helping hand in safeguarding the planet, but are also educational centers for scholars from abroad to learn about environmentalism. Recently, a group of professors and students from the Ut-ta-ra-dit Ra-ja-bhat University in Thailand, visited the Tzu Chi Chunshe(春社) Recycling Station in Taichung, to gain a better understanding on ways to sort recyclables and protect our environment. Let`s take a look.

Mayor Champagne visit nursing home

Prior to the Lunar New Year, Hualien Tzu Chi volunteers and Jing Si Abode masters went to a local nursing home, to hand out blessing and wisdom red envelopes to senior residents. Among the volunteers was also a special guest from abroad, the mayor of South Toms River of New Jersey, Mr. Joseph Champagne. To express his gratitude to Tzu Chi for its relief work after Hurricane Sandy last year, Joseph decided to visit Taiwan and join volunteer work, as a way to reciprocate Tzu Chi`s love and care.

Year-end reunion banquet

Staying in Taiwan, the Tzu Chi Taichung Chapter, held a year-end reunion banquet and aid distribution for their care recipients. Among the participants was 85-year-old Mr.Chen, who volunteered at the second-hand clothing booth, as a way to express his thanks to Tzu Chi. Meanwhile, many care recipients donated money from their bamboo coin banks, as they hope to pay the love forward by helping those in greater need.

Students visit nursing home

As schools around Taiwan are on their winter break, a group of Kaohsiung University students used the holiday to volunteer at a local nursing home. By putting on a series of performances, the students hoped to celebrate the Chinese New Year with the elderly residents in style.

Creating an eco-friendly vegetable garden
Have you ever wondered what we can do with recycled bottles? With some soil and seeds, coupled with unwanted shoe laces, a cotton rope, and a 1 NTD coin, you can create your own vegetable garden. This creative method not only helps reduce bug infestation, the automatic irrigation tool also prevents mosquito larvae from forming in the water. Let`s us find out how to create your own practical and eco-friendly vegetable garden.

We go back to Indonesia at the end of our show; as a part of its relief work to help the flood victims who were affected by the monsoon rain in mid-January, Tzu Chi volunteers arrived in a remote village in East Jakarta to carry out an aid distribution, helping a total of 1,300 residents. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.

New Year gifts for the needy

Tzu Chi helping Syrian refugees

Hainan businessmen join Tzu Chi

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I`m Wendy Chen. Thank you for joining us.

Coming up in today`s show, in Taiwan, government and individuals are coming together to help the needy celebrate the Chinese New Year.

We join Tzu Chi volunteers in Jordan, as they continue to reach out a helping hand to Syrian refugees by holding aid distributions.

And, in Hainan Province of China, we meet the few local entrepreneurs who are devoting themselves wholeheartedly to Tzu Chi.

Getting ready for Chinese New Year

Home-made detergents

The art of spring cleaning

NGOs to help refugees

Mayor comes to visit Tzu Chi

Local businessmen join TC

Celebrating with care recipients

Year-end blessing ceremony

Getting ready for Chinese New Year

First up, in Taiwan, as tomorrow marks the eve of the Chinese New Year, many people are doing last minute shoppings, to prepare delicious meals in celebration of the holiday. To help the needy enjoy the festival, a restaurant owner donated New Year dishes from his restaurant, to the Xiangyang(向陽) Child Care Center. Meanwhile, the government of New Taipei City visited solitary seniors door to door, to present them with a special New Year`s gift.

Home-made detergents

Prior to the Chinese New Year, it is part of the tradition for families to clean up their homes. However, a common worry at this time, is the negative effect of the chemicals found in commercial detergents. In our next report, we learn from an expert, how to use essential oils to make non-toxic cleaners, at the cost of less than 50 NTD.

The art of spring cleaning

When carrying out spring cleaning before the Lunar New Year, we normally mop the floor, clean the windows and dust our furniture. Nevertheless, there are always hidden corners which we might neglect, that are just as important. Let`s take a look.

NGOs to help refugees

Facing cold and hunger daily is perhaps the best description of the living conditions of Syrian refugees. As organizations from around the globe continue to look for ways to help them, there are already two groups helping out these war victims on the frontline, the Al-Takaful Charitable Society and the Tzu Chi Foundation. In today`s report on Jordan, we take a look at how respect and companionship are infused in Tzu Chi`s aid distributions.

Mayor comes to visit Tzu Chi

Recently; accompanied by Tzu Chi volunteers, the mayor of South Toms River, Joseph Champagne, made his first trip to Taiwan, to spend the holiday with Master Cheng Yen. But first, he stopped by at the Tzu Chi Humanitarian Center in Guandu, Taipei.

Local businessmen join TC

As the Chinese government is working to turn Hainan into an international tourism destination, the island has attracted many businessmen from home and abroad to relocate and settle in Hainan. While these entrepreneurs gain wealth in their businesses, they also look for spiritual growth. Having met Tzu Chi, many of these local businessmen decided, to dedicate themselves to the Buddhist NGO, and have gained much through the process of giving.

Celebrating with care recipients

Prior to the Chinese New Year, Tzu Chi volunteers around Taiwan, invited care recipients and their families to join them for year-end celebrations, where they prepared delicious meals and also handed out aid supplies. The work that goes into each of these aid distributions requires the combined efforts of many hard working volunteers.

Year-end blessing ceremony

In Medan, Indonesia, Tzu Chi volunteers held a year-end blessing ceremony with many local residents, Tzu Chi members, and government officials taking part. In the event, members from the Indonesia Religious Harmony Forum signed a memorandum of cooperation with Tzu Chi, in hopes of spreading Tzu Chi`s humanitarian spirit far and wide.

We go to the United States at the end of our program today; students at the Da Ai Elementary School and Da Ai Kindergarten in California, put on traditional clothings to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Before leaving you with these images, we would just like to wish you all a happy holiday and a safe journey home. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.

We kick off today’s show in China, in Shenyang(瀋陽) City of Liaoning(遼寧) Province, where Tzu Chi volunteers held their first tea gathering for 500 entrepreneurs. After gaining a better understanding of Tzu Chi, these businessmen all vowed to incorporate the organization’s humanitarian spirit into their companies.

Staying in China, in Hubei’s(湖北) Wuhan(武漢), Tzu Chi volunteers held their first year-end blessing ceremony, in which over 400 local residents took part. Volunteers worked hard to put on a perfect sign language performance, in hopes of inspiring participants to join Tzu Chi.

As Chinese New Year is just days away, Tzu Chi volunteers in Pingtung (屏東), Taiwan, invited mentally challenged students, to put on a drumming performance at their reunion banquet. Meanwhile, in China, Tzu Chi volunteers in Siming(思明) District of Xiamen(廈門), organized their first ever reunion banquet for their care recipients.

The heart’s desires are the causes of life’s greatest miseries.

Syria is the only country in the Middle East without a debt problem. Its enjoys an advanced farming industry and the residents there are widely educated, but as the civil war continues, it has robbed everyone of their wealth, land, pride and even lives. As residents are fleeing to nearby countries, to seek temporary shelter; we look at the difficulties faced by these refugees who are away from home.

Many Tzu Chings in Taiwan are seizing their winter breaks to travel to Hualien, to take part in volunteer work at the Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital. In addition to helping on the hospital grounds, some Tzu Chings also accompanied volunteers on home visitations, where they learned a valuable life lesson.

On Our Original Nature

Our hearts have a light that illuminates in darkness. This is our pure and unsullied original nature. This original nature has no shape or form, but exists nevertheless. It is through wisdom that we express this radiance of our original nature in the world of form, sound, and color.

Much of the food consumed by Taiwanese such as soy milk, tofu and dried beancurd are all made from soybeans. However, most of the soybeans used today, are imported from abroad and ge-ne-ti-cally modified. Despite the high cost involved to produce locally grown soybeans, providing healthy foods that are free of toxins is a commitment that Taiwan’s organic farmers have taken to heart. Let’s take a look.

Since Tzu Chi’s establishment in Hainan(海南), China, Guangzhou(廣州) Tzu Chi volunteers have been working to promote recycling concepts to local communities, and thus, brought a group of recycling volunteers to Taiwan last March, to learn more about the organization’s environmental work. After seeing how volunteers in Taiwan are giving selflessly to safeguard the planet, this group of recycling volunteers from China, was inspired to do the same upon returning home.

In Taiwan, as residents around the island are getting ready for the coming Chinese New Year this weekend, Tzu Chi volunteers in Taipei’s Songshan(松山) District have set aside their busy schedules, to help solitary senior, A-Nan(阿南) clean his home. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.
