(2) History of body donations

We start today”s show with a look-back at the history of body donations in Taiwan. In the early days following retrocession, the National Taiwan University College of Medicine was the country”s only medical school. At that time, cadavers for the anatomy class were donated by homeless shelters. Later, however, with the establishment of other medical colleges, there was soon a shortage of cadavers. From four students to one whole body, anatomy classes at NTU soon had only one cadaver for 20 students. Finally in 1973, a professor at the school founded the Liaison Office for the Use of Cadavers for Medical Science, helping organize the donation of medical cadavers, and opening the door to the later widespread donation of bodies for medical science in Taiwan.

Body donation program 15 years old

As you just saw, 15 years after Tzu Chi”s body donation program came into being, the number of people who have now registered has already topped 30,000 - which ranks number one in the world. Medical schools across Taiwan are ensured a sufficient supply of cadavers for teaching and research. In addition, the Tzu Chi practice of introducing medical students to donor families has also given the cold scientific discipline, a heartwarming dimension. Now Tzu Chi Monthly senior writer, Ye Wenying(葉文鶯), has published a book on the Silent Mentors, and the contribution they make to medical science.

Silent Mentor Wang Jianyuan

Since Tzu Chi”s Silent Mentor program began 15 years ago, over 400 people have successfully donated their bodies after their death. In our next item, we introduce you to the young Silent Mentor Wang Jianyuan(王建元), who tragically died of a heart condition at the age of only 35.

Spiritual cultivation is not a competition, but rather a training of one”s own patience, determination and tolerant heart.

Guarding paradise

Dongsha is a disputed island in the South China Sea, owned by Taiwan. In our final trip to the beautiful coral atoll, we meet some of the 100 coast guard staff, who watch over the island and the surrounding ocean. As well as patrolling the sea for smugglers, traffickers, and illegal fishing vessels; they also have the responsibility to protect the wildlife on Dongsha island.

Devoted recycling volunteers

Back on Taiwan”s main island, Tzu Chi”s environmental volunteers do their part to protect nature. One volunteer in Zhongli City, Qiu Yue-e(邱月娥), collects recyclables from her local supermarket every evening. After closing time, at 10 o”clock, she shows up without fail to collect and sort plastic and polystyrene. Accompanying her is Chen Xiuqin(陳秀琴) who was moved by Qiu Yue-e”s example, and decided to be her driver.

Saving the world starts with saving your own heart. People must be encouraged to cut back, lead a simpler way of life, and put the brakes on development.
Only by protecting the environment and cutting carbon emissions can we save the planet. Not many countries are as lucky as Taiwan to have so many environmental volunteers, who are guardians of the natural world.

Helping 2,613 children go back to school

The Tzu Chi Malacca chapter recently held three scholarship distribution ceremonies in Payfong High School, at which 2,613 students received 200 Ringgits each, and a set of reusable eating utensils. Recipients also had a chance to pick out new shoes and uniforms.

Learning about nature in nature

Before school restarted in Singapore, Tzu Chi volunteers introduced children to the beauty and wonder of nature, at a parent-child field-trip. In addition to a hike, volunteers also set up several workstations, where they taught students about how to protect the earth.

A better way to mark Moon Festival

As we celebrate Moon Festival today, many families in Taiwan are planning to have a barbeque. However, (CG in) according to statistics, carbon monoxide emission will go up by 30 percent, and garbage by 50 percent today. The festivities cancel out 36 Earth Hour events - the global lights-out campaign.

Moon Festival is a time for families to reunite. To make sure homeless people living on the streets of Taipei were not left out, a local charity shelter organized a party in a city park, with free medical check ups. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.
