Fire aid for Thonburi community

First up in the show today, after a fire caused by a short circuit broke out in a community in Thonburi County, of Bangkok, in Thailand, 32 houses were burned down, leaving 58 families without homes to go back to. To help the victims rebuild from the ashes of the disaster, Tzu Chi volunteers distributed daily necessities, while the government provided emergency cash.

Water Repentance made easy

Back in Taiwan, in preparation for the upcoming performance of Water Repentance in Hualien, Tzu Chi teachers have been working hard to make the difficult Buddhist sutra accessible to a younger audience. At the junior high school affiliated to Tzu Chi University, instructors taught the students how to apply the text to their daily lives; and organized a variety of interactive games and activities to get the point home.

Elementary Water Repentance

Staying in Hualien, but going over to the Tzu Chi Elementary School, teacher Zhang Shuyuan(張淑媛) was inspired by her participation in the Water Repentance stage show, to create a series of games and learning activities to help younger children understand how the sutra connects to their daily lives, through recycling. Zhang says she hopes that by exposing to the sutra to the young children at an early age, they will develop good manners, and a positive outlook on life.

The determination of Lin Youting

21-year-old of Li Youting李侑庭 of Tainan, in Taiwan lost her hearing at a young age after suffering a high fever. As she grew up, her family, and especially her mother, were extremely protective of her. They did their best to ensure that Youting received a good education. However, as a college sophomore, the young hearing-impaired woman realized that a college degree wasn”t for her, and decided instead to open a cafe, with her classmates. The enterprise was a big surprise for her mother.

Abusing paper dinnerware

In Taiwan, over 10 million people regularly eat out. Since most of them don”t carry their own reusable dinnerware with them, over 5 billion paper cups and bowls, are used up in Taiwan every year. Even worse, many people don”t realize that paper can be recycled, so usually just throw their containers into the bin, which only further harms the environment.

Plasticizer in IVs

From paper to plastic. Getting an intravenous drip is a common practice in Taiwanese hospitals for patients with serious conditions and people with the flu. Over 40 million IVs are administered a year. But since the tube is made of PVC, it may release plasticizer into the blood. That”s why the Department of Health is asking doctors to put warning labels on their IV equipment. Some larger hospitals, such as NTU and Tzu Chi General, have IV drips made of the more expensive poly-propylene.

Breeding tough but tasty tea

Taiwanese tea is a top international seller. The unique climatic and geographic conditions on the island help growers create quality varieties of tea. And since the Japanese colonial era, local farmers have been breeding their own strains. Now, growers are propagating varieties of tea that are suitable for organic farming.
