Opening of a new Da Ai school

Three elementary schools in Taiwan”s Kaohsiung area were buried underneath mudslides, brought down by Typhoon Morakot, in 2009. After seven months of work, one of them, Minzu Elementary School, celebrated its reopening, at its new location, in Shanlin Da Ai Village. The ceremony was attended by government leaders, members of the community, and Tzu Chi volunteers.

New Minzu Elementary

After Typhoon Morakot left a trail of destruction through southern Taiwan in 2009, Tzu Chi began a series of relief programs, to help the victims of landslides and flooding. Construction projects included permanent housing communities, to help residents relocate to lower ground. As we just saw, in Shanlin Da Ai village, Tzu Chi held a ceremony, to hand over the newly rebuilt Minzu Elementary School, to the community. Though classes haven”t started yet, the children are already all looking forward, to the next semester.

Use drugs correctly

Taiwan celebrates National Pharmacist Day on January 15th, every year. At the Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, superintendent Jian Shouxin(簡守信) personally gives each chemist a present, to thank them for their hard work. This year, the pharmacists put together some songs and skits, to help educate the patients, and their relatives, on the right way to use medication.

Tzu Chi and Wang Lu

In China”s Anhui province, grade-A student, Wang Lu has been taking care of her bedridden mother, for the past ten years. The community comes together, to help the loving daughter; but when Tzu Chi came to help, knowing that the foundation”s money comes from donations, she refused to accept financial aid.

(4)Hospital patients in good hands

Tzu Chi volunteer Li Meiying from south Taiwan, missed out on a full education in childhood, but she is blooming at Dalin Hospital. She may struggle to fill out some of the forms, but she is gifted in other areas. Let”s find out why, Li Meiying, is one of the most popular volunteers, at Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital.

It”s all a state of mind

Wang Dingxia is a Tzu Chi care recipient, turned volunteer, from Changhua. When his wife developed a brain tumor, and his investments failed, it was Tzu Chi volunteers who helped him through the tough time. His wife”s dying wish was to be a volunteer, so Wang realized her dream, by becoming one for her.

The turtle cake mold makers

In Taiwan, red turtle cakes are a common festival offering, because turtles represent longevity and red, good fortune. The cakes, which are shaped like a turtle”s shell, are made with mold, called a guiyin龜印. Today, most molds are made of plastic. But, in our next story we introduce you to one of the few remaining carpenters, who carves turtle cake molds, from wood.

Each mold tells a unique story

In our last report, we saw master carpenter Zheng Yongbin鄭永斌. As well as making turtle cake molds, he also collects them, and has around 800 in his collection. Each one, tells a different story.

Finally today, we go back to China, where volunteers in Shanghai went to a nursing home, to hand out winter aid to the elderly residents. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.
