Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Wendy Chen. Thank you for joining us.

We begin today”s show in Thailand, a community in the capital city of Bangkok, @ was hit by an outbreak of fire on July 15th. The blaze, which started due to a faulty electric wire, burned down 7 homes and left 19 families without shelter. Tzu Chi volunteers in Bangkok soon after, rushed to the scene to hand out relief supplies, and help the families make it through this difficult time.

Next we join Tzu Chi volunteers from Taiwan, South Africa and Zimbabwe who have gathered to help build prefabricated classrooms in Zimbabwe”s Run-gu Run-go Elementary School. Even with the expertise of the Taiwan Tzu Chi volunteers, constructing 7 classrooms is no easy task. However everyone is united in efforts as they share the same goal of building a safer environment for the children to attend class.

Also in the southern part of the planet, but moving to Brazil, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Tzu Chi Brazil Liaison Office, the overseas Chinese community and hundreds of volunteers participated in an anniversary ceremony. Thanks to the leadership and hard work of Tzu Chi volunteer, Ye Yueguan(葉月觀), not only are Tzu Chi”s work and ideals recognized by many in this Catholic country, but the number of volunteers have also increased dramatically. Today, the Tzu Chi Medical Center also offers monthly free clinic as well as dental services twice a week.

In Vietnam, every month starting from March of this year, Tzu Chi volunteers seize the time after their monthly distribution to hold volunteer training seminars for local residents. Today, the participants have increased to nearly 100 people, with most of them being Vietnamese. The volunteers said they hope to inspire local residents to do good deeds and help those in greater need.

There is great strength when everyone does good deeds. There is good fortune when everyone creates blessings.

In traditional Chinese Medicine, the flow of Chi, or energy, is one of the major factors in maintaining good health. Although Chi cannot be felt or seen, it can be measured. What the Chinese call Chi is actually the electrical charge in the fluid between cells. This fluid passes throughout the body and flows especially strong at the body”s 700 plus acupuncture points. Chinese medicine has come up with numerous ways to move and stimulate this Chi, thereby keeping the energy flowing and the body healthy.

To promote recycling and at the same time do good deeds, in the Cengkareng Da Ai Village in Indonesia”s West Jakarta, Tzu Chings organized a flea market on the 22nd of July, to sell second hand clothing and jewelries. The money raised will be used to help the needy, and the left over items will be donated to orphanages and nursing homes. The youth volunteers were inspired, to think twice before buying anything in the future.

On Cherishing blessings

Many can barely escape the hardship of starvation. Though no longer in danger, refugees still struggle to make a living. Master Cheng Yen hopes that we cherish our blessings by eating 80 percent full and leave the remaining 20 percent to help those without food.

We are all probably familiar with the silkworms from science class when we were in elementary schools. Around the 1980s, silkworm breeding was quite popular in Taiwan, and mulberry tree farms took up some 2,700 hectares of land. However, as many in the industry relocated overseas to cut down costs, there are only a few silkworm breeders left on the island. In today”s feature reports on Taiwan”s fading industries, we meet silkworm breeder Tu Quanming(涂泉明) in Miaoli(苗栗), who is working with his son to preserve the traditional trade.

Art is said to have the power to spread goodness and helps people see life in a different perspective. For that reason, despite lacking funds for the past 17 years, the Rondo Ballet Theater continues to provide dance classes to those interested, including students from the Tzu Chi Middle School. In the past 6 years, the theater even donated all their income from every show to Tzu Chi. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.
