Reaching out to Sendai

The world will never forget the earthquake and tsunami, that struck northeast Japan, more than nine months ago, leaving the country in a state of turmoil. Donations from around the globe poured into Japan. Tzu Chi”s ninth disaster relief team recently organized a cash distribution for 9,227 families in Sendai City, of Miyagi Prefecture. Some of the recipients said that the emotional value of the gift meant more than the money itself.

Students” education halted by floods

As well as love, survivors of the flooding in Thailand are discovering that they also need basic utilities, such as schools and hospitals, to keep their nation together. Many students have lost their school books and uniforms; while their parents have lost their jobs. So, is going back to school a mission impossible? Let”s find out, in our next story.

Apheresis for blood donations

Yesterday, we gave you a basic introduction to blood donations. Today, we conclude our mini-series by introducing you to the apheresis technology, whereby a donor”s blood is separated, to collect just the plasma or the platelets, to minimize the impact on the subject.

Free clinic for Changbin residents

Eastern Taiwan TIMA members, as well as medical staff from Hualien, Yuli and Guanshan Tzu Chi Hospitals, recently came together to hold a free clinic in Changbin Township, of Taitung County. The services included orthopedics, surgery, family medicine, ophthalmology, Chinese medicine, and dental treatment.

(4) Volunteers make house calls
As you just saw in our history feature, on this day in 1999, 50 Tzu Chi volunteers went to North Korea to deliver rice to disaster-hit villagers. Recently, 31 volunteers crossed the 38th parallel once more, to again distribute rice, and other aid. After handing over the supplies, the volunteers went to visit some of the villagers in their homes.

Looking back over the year
In Taiwan”s offshore islands of Penghu, trainee volunteers and commissioners have spent the past year learning about Tzu Chi”s Four Vows and Eight Dharma Seals. Looking back, the volunteers say they have learned a lot, and look forward to redoubling their efforts, to help save the world.

Free kids” play ends mammoth tour

Back to Penghu, at the end of today”s show, where Tzu Chi volunteers have been working their socks off, to get ready for a performance of ”Water Repentance” at their year-end blessing event. Although still in rehearsals, the volunteers say they have already gained a great deal from the sutra. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines.

Bangkok free clinic

The floodwater in the Don Muang area of Bangkok, which is near the airport, has gone down far enough for residents to return to their homes. Thinking ahead, Tzu Chi organized a free clinic in the neighborhood, especially to help people with chronic conditions, who need regular medication. The happy smile of one rookie volunteer doctor, who was taking part in a free clinic for the first time, was an immediate antidote for the patients. And the flood victims left the clinic knowing that a lot of people care about them.

(3) Breaking the ice at winter distributions

Tzu Chi”s relief mission in North Korea brought aid to a total of 440,393 people in just four-and-a-half days. The supplies were delivered directly into the hands of the recipients. At each of the 27 distribution events, the villagers were divided into six lines, and the 31 Tzu Chi volunteers who went to North Korea split into three groups of around 10 volunteers, to manage each distribution. Every event was full of songs and laughter, as the volunteers hit it off with the villagers.

New dialysis center planned

According to Malaysia”s National Renal Registry in 2010, over 20,000 citizens were on dialysis, an increase of 4,500 from 2009. At the Tzu Chi Dialysis center in Penang, space is becoming a premium. With a waiting list of more than 50 names, the Buddhist charity has decided to build a bigger 140-bed center, that is scheduled to be completed in two years. With the new center, Tzu Chi hopes to have sufficient space to serve those in need.

The filial Chen Weihong

Staying in Malaysia, but moving to Kuala Lumpur, we introduce you to 15-year-old Chen Weihong (陳韋宏) in our next story. Originally from a well-to-do and happy family, Weihong”s father”s business began to lose money starting in 2008. Then, his mother passed away, and his father”s Parkinson”s disease grew worse. To help with the family finances, Weihong”s two older sisters had no choice but to work, and so it has fell on 15-year-old Weihong to take care of his increasingly sick father. Not long after, the family was introduced to Tzu Chi. Volunteers not only took the family under their wings, but also gave Weihong a New Shoots Scholarship, and hope for the future.

Keep the faith workshop in Hualien

In Taiwan, the Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital held its annual ”Keep the Faith” workshop, where cancer patients from the ENT department were encouraged to battle their illness. The guest speaker this year was cyclist Lu Zhirong (盧志榮) who made a full recovery from stage-four laryngeal cancer.

Children perform Buddhist sutra

At the end of each year, Tzu Chi holds year-end blessing ceremonies in communities all around Taiwan. This year, the ceremonies made a head-start in Taipei. On Sunday, a year-end blessing event was held at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, where 54 youngsters performed a short version of the Water Repentance sutra. The youngest among the performers was only 3 years of age, and the oldest 12 years old. Let”s take a look.

Coming up in the show today, Tzu Chi”s recent food aid to North Korea marks the NGO”s largest international relief mission to date.
Sustainability is key for volunteers in China, who created an ecological farm in Suzhou to grow organic vegetables and fruits, with nature in mind.
Later, we introduce to you some deserving winners of Tzu Chi”s New Shoots Scholarship Awards in Taiwan, who come from a disadvantaged background.

Helping low-income families

We start today”s show in Vietnam, where Tzu Chi volunteers have been working with a local woman”s organization, to help low income families through monthly home visitations. After months of support, volunteers were happy to see life improving for the care recipients.

(1) Needed, respectful, direct aid

Material and emotional support is even more urgently needed in North Korea, where its people suffered a string of natural disasters caused by cold weather, droughts, floods, and storms from 2010 to 2011, which led to a serious food shortage. On August 21, and again on October 2, volunteers flew to the country to assess local needs. Based on the results of the surveys, Master Cheng Yen decided to launch a major aid mission, which took place from November 11-13. The distributions delivered much-needed aid directly into the hands of North Korean villagers.

3,2,1 action!

Back in Taiwan, Tzu Chi University”s annual Chinese Language and Culture Camp, held for teenagers from overseas, has 145 attendants from Singapore and Malaysia this year. Recently, an excursion was organized to Hualien”s Da Ai TV station, where camp attendants learned more about news and TV program production. We join the young adults at Da Ai TV”s film studio.

S African volunteers visit Hualien

Last week, Tzu Chi volunteers from across the world returned to Taiwan, to receive their commissioner and Tzu Cheng credentials. After the seminar, some volunteers stayed behind to learn more about Tzu Chi”s work in Taiwan. In the next story we stay in Hualien, where Zulu volunteers from South Africa visited the Tzu Chi Hospital, as well as the local prison, hoping to inspire more people to serve humanity with their music and life-stories.

Through conservation we can give the Earth a chance to breath, and the environment a chance to recover.
Instead calling for others to follow, we should lead by example. Everyone must reach out their hands for the world.

Organic farming in Suzhou

Tzu Chi volunteers in Suzhou, China have embarked on a sustainable farming project, by creating the ”Tzu Chi Organic Ecological Farm” in the hills above the busy city near Shanghai. The budding farmers are employing modern-day technology and the latest scientific methods to work in harmony with nature. But when we joined them, they were using some low-tech but effective techniques to clear the ground of weeds and rocks.

Promoting vegetarianism in Hanwang

Staying in China, in Hanwang of Sichuan province, since October Tzu Chi volunteers have been giving seminars on environmentalism and vegetarianism. In the program, volunteers used video clips and short plays to help the local residents understand that meatless food is both healthy and easy to make.

Plastic bags for recycle

If you put your heart into doing something for the greater good, you”ll soon be joined by other people who are inspired to do the same. That was the case for Tzu Chi volunteers in Taiwan”s Tainan, who go to the Zhonzheng business district twice a week to collect unwanted plastic bags from shops. The recycling program has been so successful that all the shops are now taking part, doing what they can to look after the environment.

2nd shipment of water arrives

The worst flooding in 70 years has paralyzed many parts of Thailand for four months. The army and police have been on the frontline. One of their problems is the lack of clean drinking water for the troops. Last month, Tzu Chi Malaysia delivered its first shipment of water, for the army. Recently, the second shipment arrived, and was handed over to the navy and the police, who received 80,000 and 40,000 bottles respectively.

Happy Loi Kratong!

Loi Kratong, or the ”Festival of Light”, is celebrated in Thailand on the full moon of the 12th month on the Thai calendar. ”Loi” means to float, while a ”kratong” is a water lantern. On the day, which fell on November 10th this year, water lanterns are floated on the river. Once released, the elaborate lanterns can clog up the streams. So this year, in light of the flood that has paralyzed Thailand, the people of hard-hit Lopburi Province plan to retrieve the lanterns, from the river, once the celebrations are over.

Work-relief program survey

Thailand”s floods have at last begun to recede, allowing reconstruction work to finally begin. As international aid pours into the country, and experts make predictions on the impact of the disaster on the economy, Tzu Chi volunteers are already making plans to launch a work-relief program. The scheme, in which flood victims will be paid to clean up their own communities, worked very well in the Philippines, after Marikina was engulfed by Typhoon Ketsna in 2009. Tzu Chi volunteers have been surveying residents of the Laksi district in Bangkok, to see how to adapt the program to local needs. Volunteers carried out a survey, while handing out aid in the Kaona community. But, we start today”s show at the Tzu Chi chapter house, where volunteers were busy, packing bags of supplies.

Granary Lopburi flooded

In the continuation of our featured series, on Thailand”s slow-moving tsunami, we leave the capital, and go to the central province of Lopburi, to understand the situation there. Lopburi is 153km from Bangkok, and the level of floodwater there averages around 7m. Homes have been inundated with water, affecting a third-of-a-million people. The province is known as Thailand”s granary, because it produces 820,000 tons of grain a year. This year, the harvest has all but been wiped out by the flood. But, in our next story, we meet a local farmer, who, despite his losses, is still optimistic about the future.

Graduation at Malacca Educare Center

The Malacca Educare Center, in Malaysia, recently held is 10th graduation ceremony. There was a twist to this year”s event, as the school”s 114 students, aged 4-6, came together to perform sections of the Water Repentance Sutra. The months that the children spent memorizing the ancient text, not only resulted in a wonderful show, but also gave the youngsters some useful wisdom, that may come in handy, in their later lives.

New volunteers learn roots

Another commencement ceremony took place in Taiwan recently, as overseas volunteers came to get their commissioners badges. Almost 700 visitors, who were inducted in Sanchong, New Taipei City, arrived in Hualien on Monday, to go back to the roots of Tzu Chi. It was a moving experience for the certified volunteers, both new and old, who said that they are more inspired than ever, to spread Tzu Chi philosophy, once they get back home.

People should abide by Nature”s Laws, instead of going against them. We should learn to live in harmony with our environment and each other. Tzu Chi actively promotes its environmental mission to help minimize man”s impact on nature.

Keeping bugs away, the natural way

Abiding by nature”s laws, instead of going against them, could be applied to the slow work of rice-breeding in Taiwan. Instead of developing pesticides and chemicals to rebuff attacks from pests and diseases, experts at an Agricultural Research Institute, in the south of Taiwan, are developing new strains of rice, that are naturally resilient to problems like planthopper infection, and the dreaded rice-blast fungus. In the second and final part of our series on rice breeding, we find out more.

Kampung Bukit Asu indigenous ties

As you just saw in our history report, Tzu Chi volunteers in Perak State, of Malaysia, first visited the indigenous peoples, living in the Kampung Bukit Asu mountain area, some 13 years ago. At first, residents refused the offer of aid, from the volunteers. But, after months of regular visits, the indigenous peoples finally opened up, and today enjoy a strong friendship with the volunteers. Let”s take a look at how it all started.

Aid distribution in Taga

First up in the show, the Tzu Chi disaster relief team held a consolation cash distribution in Taga City of Miyagi Prefecture, for Japan”s March 11th tsunami and quake victims. Many locals joined the event as a way to help their compatriots. Volunteers also took the time to explain the origins of Tzu Chi to the participants, to give them a better understanding of the NGO.

Helping those in need

Tzu Chi”s charitable mission in Vietnam”s Ho Chi Minh city is also going strong with its monthly visits to care recipients. In the next story we follow volunteers as they help a needy family thoroughly clean up their house, after realizing that financial support alone isn”t enough to help the family stand back up.

Tzu Chi turns 17

In the Philippines, the local Tzu Chi chapter celebrated its 17th birthday by holding a rice distribution for local residents. Besides a 20kg bag of rice, each family also received a bamboo coin bank, so they can practice daily acts of kindness to help pay the love forward.

Medical supply shortage

Flooding in Thailand has been ongoing for more than three months now, forcing many factories, including Thailand”s pharmaceutical factories, to close down. To help the Thai government cope with the crisis, Tzu Chi sent from Taiwan 30,000 bags of saline, 60,000 sets of IV kits, and enough dialysis solution to treat over 10,000 patients.

Volunteers under flood pressure

The slow-moving tsunami of flooding in Thailand is proving to be a stamina test for local Tzu Chi volunteers. Since the floodwater gradually started to rise three months ago, the volunteers have not topped their aid effort, sometimes wading through swamped streets to bring food, drinking water, and other supplies to emergency shelter residents. In our next item from Thailand, we find out how Bangkok volunteers are coping with the stress.

Post-flood business opportunities

Staying in Thailand, in the continuation of our series of in-depth reports from the troubled country, we investigate what new business opportunities the flood has given rise to, and how the Thai people have adapted to their waterlogged lives. Although many shops have closed down due to the deluge, new businesses like taxi boats are taking over the flooded streets. Things like sandbags, rain wear and rubber rafts are also selling like hot cakes. We go to Bangkok to find out more.

Free clinic expands services

Moving to Singapore, in 2004, the local Tzu Chi chapter held its first free clinic for the poor in Chinatown. Four years later, on November 1st of 2008, the clinic relocated to Bukit Merah community where it continues to serve the needy till this day. In order to meet the increasing demand by the community, the clinic expanded its Chinese Medicine outpatient service to five days a week. We join the celebrations in our next report.

Coming up in today”s show, Tzu Chi volunteers in Indonesia deliver aid to victims of the flooding in Sumatra.
We start a new series of in-depth reports on the flooding in Thailand, which has been called the slow-moving tsunami.
And we look back on the history of the publication of the sayings of Master Cheng Yen, 22 years after the first book of Jing Si Aphorisms.

●今天的提要,印尼慈濟志工為蘇門答臘水患居民帶來物資援助;
●一開始帶大家來看泰國水患的深入報導,被稱為慢海嘯的水患;

Biannual free clinic in N California
Flood situation in depth
Filipino volunteer makes dream trip

West Sumatra battered by heavy rain

We start today”s show in Indonesia, where days of heavy rain at the beginning of the month forced over 50,000 people to abandon their homes in West Sumatra”s Pesisir Selatan - or South Coastal regency. In the immediate aftermath, Tzu Chi volunteers in Padang carried out a disaster survey and small aid distributions. Aware that victims were still struggling to cope, the volunteers returned to the area many times, bringing rice, water, cooking oil and clothing for the needy families.

Biannual free clinic in N California

People from poor and migrant communities in the United States, who lack medical insurance, often have little hope of seeing a doctor. That”s why Tzu Chi”s chapter in Northern California holds a twice-yearly free clinic, aimed at members of the Hispanic community. At the most recent event, doctors saw a total of 258 cases. Partnering Tzu Chi at the clinic this time was a local hospital, which offered free hepatitis B checks for the residents.

Flood situation in depth

Flooding in Thailand has paralyzed the country for more than three months. Described as a ”slow-moving tsunami”, the water flowed from the north to the south of the country, affecting around 63 provinces, and threatening the administrative and financial center of Bangkok. Starting today, we”ll be bringing you a series of in-depth reports on the slow-moving tsunami, beginning in the capital city.

Filipino volunteer makes dream trip

We”ll have more on the thorny issues brought up by the flooding in Thailand tomorrow. But back to today. After receiving help from Tzu Chi in the aftermath of Typhoon Ketsana in 2009, Nanilita Alburo, from the Philippines, signed up as a volunteer, and vowed to save up enough money to visit Taiwan to see Master Cheng Yen. After a year and a half, of vegetarian meals and saving half her salary, Nanilita”s dream came true.

Japanese student says ”thank you”

Taiwan donated more money to Japan after the March 11 disaster than any other country in the world. The generosity surprised many Japanese people, and inspired one student to make a visit to Taiwan to show his appreciation.

Wang Zhang and his wife

Our next story is about a life of limitless tolerance and patience. Wang Zhang(王掌), from central Taiwan, accompanies his wife, who suffers from dementia, to rehabilitation classes every day. Although this takes up most of his free time, the 78-year-old says marriage is a lifelong commitment.

Age-friendly Tzu Chi hospitals

To help seniors enjoy their golden years, institutions in Taiwan are working towards becoming more ”age-friendly”. Recently, Hualien, Yuli and Dalin Tzu Chi Hospitals all won certificates for being ”Friendly Facilities for Senior Citizens”. Let”s see how they did it.

Aid for 722 families in Choluteca

We start today”s show in Central America, where flooding brought down by heavy rains from a tropical depression, has affected over a million people, leaving hundreds of thousands displaced and in dire need of help. In Honduras, Tzu Chi”s disaster assessment team held its second major distribution of aid, on Sunday November 13, in the southern region of Choluteca city. The event went without a hitch, and a total of 722 householders collected much-needed supplies. At the distribution site, you could see many elderly residents - grandmothers and grandfathers - who had come to pick up their bags of food; while their younger relatives stayed at home instead of coming out to help. Local volunteers said, in Honduras, the young generation tend not to respect their elders. So, Mr. Zhang Hongcai from Tzu Chi made it his personal mission to look after the seniors.

Shelter turned into spiritual center

From Honduras to Thailand, which has also been hard hit by flooding for several months. Although the water is gradually receding, many areas, including large parts of Bangkok, are still submerged in water. The government turned its Administrative Center, in the capital”s Laksi district, into an emergency shelter, and now Tzu Chi volunteers are doing their best to make it a spiritual training ground. Besides setting up a soup kitchen, the volunteers also arranged a series of activities, to help the younger people look at their parents in a different light.

38 families displaced by fire

In the Filipino capital of Manila, a fire broke out in the Nangka district of Marikina City, burning down 11 homes and damaging 11 others. In total, 38 families were displaced. Among the victims were some Tzu Chi volunteers, who went to help their neighbors before attending to their own needs. Fellow volunteers soon arrived, on the very night of the blaze, with aid for everyone.

Use our time well to cultivate a deeper understanding of life, and we can help not only ourselves but also others.

Wilmington TC clinic 1 year old

After helping others for a year, the Tzu Chi community clinic in Wilmington, California, celebrated its first anniversary. Offering dental and acupuncture services, the center serves low-income residents, especially from the Hispanic community. In the past year, many patients have gone on to sign up as volunteers, and were a big help at the birthday celebration.

Doctors honored at award ceremony

Battling rare disease

Some rare diseases can change the victim”s appearance, which often results in discrimination. Ichthyosis patients, who have scaly or flaky skin, can suffer from isolation, and live in the knowledge that there is no cure for their condition. Many people are too scared to approach them, for fear of catching the disease, which is actually non-infectious. So, at a recent celebration, for persons with disabilities in Taiwan, the organizers took the opportunity to raise awareness of ichthyosis.

Taiwan used to be known for its cheap plastic products, but in May of this year, the country hit the international headlines over the plasticizer scandal, after toxic chemicals were found in a number of food products. However, we could be ingesting plasticizers - which are used to make plastic soft and flexible - by misusing the containers, cling film and other products that contain type-3 PVC. If heated, PVC can breakdown, and release chemicals, including any added plasticizers, into our food.

1st Tzu Chi flood relief since Mitch

On Saturday, November 12, the Tzu Chi disaster assessment team in Honduras helped distribute food to 1,200 flood-affected families in the municipality of Marcovia, in Choluteca department. Each 26kg bag of supplies contained corn-flour, rice, beans, sugar, and salt. Thirteen years ago, when Hurricane Mitch hit Central America, Tzu Chi volunteers from the USA went to Honduras to hand out aid. After the recent flooding, they are back again, this time only to find that they are outnumbered by local volunteers.

Tzu Chi lifeline for Bangkok residents

Next we move to Thailand, a country also gravely affected by flood. Tzu Chi volunteers continue to be a lifeline for victims displaced by the flooding, who are sheltering at the government”s Administration Center in Bangkok”s Laksi district, and the surrounding area. Recently a group of children brought their enthusiasm and energy to the volunteering effort; their presence added a familial warmth to the shelter.

A total of over 7,500 households benefited from the distributions, which were entirely organized by local volunteers. A day before the event, volunteers were still recruiting helping hands for the large-scale handout. Despite the shortage of volunteers, the events still went smoothly. In the next story we go to Tagajo City, to meet a few volunteering locals, who even called on friends to help their compatriots together.

Tzu Chi makes its presence felt

At the Thai government”s administrative center in the Laksi district of Bangkok, which has been turned into a temporary shelter for flood victims, Tzu Chi volunteers continue to do their best to support those affected by the country”s worst flooding in 50 years. Their unselfish giving has inspired an increasing number of residents at the shelter to donate their time to help with cooking and cleaning. Volunteers are also preparing to help people in a nearby community, who are facing a serious lack of food and water.

Tzu Chi began in 2008

In the politically and economically unstable country of Zimbabwe, life for most of the population is difficult. Even with money, locals won”t necessarily find food to buy. Four volunteers began carrying out Tzu Chi”s work in 2008, and since then, have held over 50 distributions, and inspired over 70 locals to contribute.

Home comforts in prefab community

In our continuing series of reports from northeast Japan, we investigate what life is like for old people, who are living in prefabricated homes. Japan has the most serious population-aging problem in Asia. The situation is even more in the countryside. Previous experience shows that the elderly suffer from depression and ill-health in the aftermath of earthquakes, so this time around, the Japanese government is trying even harder to keep its seniors happy and health.

Children”s goodness inspired

Taichung”s Xinshe(新社) Elementary School was rebuilt by Tzu Chi, after Taiwan”s 921 earthquake of 1999. In the years after the quake, the school has kept up its weekly Jing Si aphorism classes, and in turn inspired goodness in the hearts of the students. For example, second-grader Xu Lengya徐稜雅 decided to save her pocket money for those in need after participating in World Vision”s 30 hour famine program.

Teaching children Water Repentance

Moving to Malaysia, the Da Ai Educare center in Malacca has been instructing students on the Water Repentance Sutra since July of this year. In addition to discussion groups on the meaning of the sutra, teachers also guide the students through the movements of the musical. After four months of practice, the students can now recite sections of the sutra flawlessly, and have also learned on how to reflect on their actions.

Lessons in a wheel pie

For many people, making a career change in midlife requires more than just courage, but also the ability to view life in a more philosophical way. In our next story, we meet Tzu Chi volunteer Yang Wende, who, due to unexpected reasons, left his job at a bank, and started selling wheel pies. The experience that not only gave him an insight into life, but also offered him the perfect opportunity to introduce Tzu Chi to his customers.

90-year-old hospital volunteer

Someone who learned to do the right thing a long time ago is 90-year-old Mrs. Chen Huang Jinse(陳黃金色) who was among the first generation of volunteers at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, and still regularly serves at the hospital today. The wise and kindly old lady is known affectionately to everyone as ”Sister Miaomiao(妙妙)”.
