Tzu Chi makes its presence felt

At the Thai government”s administrative center in the Laksi district of Bangkok, which has been turned into a temporary shelter for flood victims, Tzu Chi volunteers continue to do their best to support those affected by the country”s worst flooding in 50 years. Their unselfish giving has inspired an increasing number of residents at the shelter to donate their time to help with cooking and cleaning. Volunteers are also preparing to help people in a nearby community, who are facing a serious lack of food and water.

Tzu Chi began in 2008

In the politically and economically unstable country of Zimbabwe, life for most of the population is difficult. Even with money, locals won”t necessarily find food to buy. Four volunteers began carrying out Tzu Chi”s work in 2008, and since then, have held over 50 distributions, and inspired over 70 locals to contribute.

Home comforts in prefab community

In our continuing series of reports from northeast Japan, we investigate what life is like for old people, who are living in prefabricated homes. Japan has the most serious population-aging problem in Asia. The situation is even more in the countryside. Previous experience shows that the elderly suffer from depression and ill-health in the aftermath of earthquakes, so this time around, the Japanese government is trying even harder to keep its seniors happy and health.

Children”s goodness inspired

Taichung”s Xinshe(新社) Elementary School was rebuilt by Tzu Chi, after Taiwan”s 921 earthquake of 1999. In the years after the quake, the school has kept up its weekly Jing Si aphorism classes, and in turn inspired goodness in the hearts of the students. For example, second-grader Xu Lengya徐稜雅 decided to save her pocket money for those in need after participating in World Vision”s 30 hour famine program.

Teaching children Water Repentance

Moving to Malaysia, the Da Ai Educare center in Malacca has been instructing students on the Water Repentance Sutra since July of this year. In addition to discussion groups on the meaning of the sutra, teachers also guide the students through the movements of the musical. After four months of practice, the students can now recite sections of the sutra flawlessly, and have also learned on how to reflect on their actions.

Lessons in a wheel pie

For many people, making a career change in midlife requires more than just courage, but also the ability to view life in a more philosophical way. In our next story, we meet Tzu Chi volunteer Yang Wende, who, due to unexpected reasons, left his job at a bank, and started selling wheel pies. The experience that not only gave him an insight into life, but also offered him the perfect opportunity to introduce Tzu Chi to his customers.

90-year-old hospital volunteer

Someone who learned to do the right thing a long time ago is 90-year-old Mrs. Chen Huang Jinse(陳黃金色) who was among the first generation of volunteers at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, and still regularly serves at the hospital today. The wise and kindly old lady is known affectionately to everyone as ”Sister Miaomiao(妙妙)”.
