Preparing for annual winter relief

First up in the show, Tzu Chi”s 2011 winter aid distribution is now in its planning stage. Volunteers in China”s Jiangsu are looking to help 5,000 families in Shuyang(沭陽) County get the supplies they need to make it through this winter. 43 volunteers from Shanghai, Kunshan and Suzhou recently went to Shuyang to assess the degree of poverty in the area, and even paid visits to several care recipients to get a better understanding of what residents really need. The dates for the aid distributions in Shuyang have been provisionally set, as December 31st, 2011, to January 3rd, 2012.

Fire disaster in Rio de Janeiro

Across the world, caregivers, dressed in blue and white, are involved in the same work: to lend a hand to where help is most needed. In Brazil”s Rio de Janeiro, a fire broke out in a district where Tzu Chi volunteers recently began caring for local residents. As the wooden houses that were burned down were illegal, residents weren”t able to rebuild them and are thus left without a home. After a simple assessment, volunteers decided to distribute daily necessities to the fire victims for the time being.

Relief-work for cleaner streets
Moving to the Philippines, the local Tzu Chi Chapter held a two-relief work programs in Manila and Marikina from October 31st to November 1st, as a way to promote recycling to the wider public. The program, in which poor residents are paid to clean up their own neighborhoods, was embraced by volunteers and locals alike. Although there were a limit numbers of places on the program, many residents showed up to work as unpaid volunteers.

Blessing and wisdom red packets
In Taiwan, as Tzu Chi”s year-end blessing ceremonies are just a few weeks away, volunteers around the island have already started making Tzu Chi”s signature blessing and wisdom red envelopes to be given out at the ceremonies. In Chiayi”s liaison office, volunteer Li Meiyu(李美玉) is in charge of explaining to other volunteers how to make these special gifts. Despite nearly losing her voice from talking so much, Li could not be happier.

Good son also volunteers on Penghu

Staying in Taiwan, we meet Ye Rongzong(葉榮宗), from Taichung, in our next story. Four years ago, Mr. Ye started staying with his elderly mother in offshore Penghu for 1-2 months at a time. Mr. Ye has been a Tzu Chi volunteer for 19 years; and when he is in Penghu, as well as caring for his 80-year-old mother, he also volunteers at the local environmental station every day. For Mr. Ye, time spent in Penghu not only allows him to fulfill his filial duties, but also helps better the environment.

Bio-fuel made from recycled resources

While biofuels are generally derived from corn and sugar cane, Taiwan”s Kaoyuan(高苑) University has been very creative in coming up with new fuel sources. Working together with National Formosa University, Kaoyuan”s teachers and students have successfully produced eco-friendly fuel from coffee grounds, and discarded rice husks. The newly-invented fuel will go a long way to helping reduce our carbon footprint.

Safety 1st at Taroko Marathon

The 2011 Taroko Gorge Marathon set off on Saturday, November 5. To keep the air clean, the organizers chose to ride ”electric vehicles” to support this year”s race. Because the route along the central cross-island highway, and through the spectacular Taroko Gorge, is prone to rockslides, the organizers made special safety arrangements - including hard hats for the runners. Let”s take a look.

Blind woman joins bone marrow drive

Recently Tzu Chi held a bone marrow blood donation drive at Tainan”s Ximen西門Elementary School. Among the participants was Lian Huilan連惠蘭 who came with her guide dog. After losing her vision to optic atrophy at the age of 31, Huilan went through a period of depression. However, with the help and support of her family, she is now back on her feet and wants to help people in even greater need.
