West Sumatra battered by heavy rain

We start today”s show in Indonesia, where days of heavy rain at the beginning of the month forced over 50,000 people to abandon their homes in West Sumatra”s Pesisir Selatan - or South Coastal regency. In the immediate aftermath, Tzu Chi volunteers in Padang carried out a disaster survey and small aid distributions. Aware that victims were still struggling to cope, the volunteers returned to the area many times, bringing rice, water, cooking oil and clothing for the needy families.

Biannual free clinic in N California

People from poor and migrant communities in the United States, who lack medical insurance, often have little hope of seeing a doctor. That”s why Tzu Chi”s chapter in Northern California holds a twice-yearly free clinic, aimed at members of the Hispanic community. At the most recent event, doctors saw a total of 258 cases. Partnering Tzu Chi at the clinic this time was a local hospital, which offered free hepatitis B checks for the residents.

Flood situation in depth

Flooding in Thailand has paralyzed the country for more than three months. Described as a ”slow-moving tsunami”, the water flowed from the north to the south of the country, affecting around 63 provinces, and threatening the administrative and financial center of Bangkok. Starting today, we”ll be bringing you a series of in-depth reports on the slow-moving tsunami, beginning in the capital city.

Filipino volunteer makes dream trip

We”ll have more on the thorny issues brought up by the flooding in Thailand tomorrow. But back to today. After receiving help from Tzu Chi in the aftermath of Typhoon Ketsana in 2009, Nanilita Alburo, from the Philippines, signed up as a volunteer, and vowed to save up enough money to visit Taiwan to see Master Cheng Yen. After a year and a half, of vegetarian meals and saving half her salary, Nanilita”s dream came true.

Japanese student says ”thank you”

Taiwan donated more money to Japan after the March 11 disaster than any other country in the world. The generosity surprised many Japanese people, and inspired one student to make a visit to Taiwan to show his appreciation.

The sky is yours when you know how to bend low. Buddhism is the study of Buddha”s selflessness and universal love, and how that love reaches all corners of the world. Buddhists should humble themselves for a life with no limits.

Wang Zhang and his wife

Our next story is about a life of limitless tolerance and patience. Wang Zhang(王掌), from central Taiwan, accompanies his wife, who suffers from dementia, to rehabilitation classes every day. Although this takes up most of his free time, the 78-year-old says marriage is a lifelong commitment.

Age-friendly Tzu Chi hospitals

To help seniors enjoy their golden years, institutions in Taiwan are working towards becoming more ”age-friendly”. Recently, Hualien, Yuli and Dalin Tzu Chi Hospitals all won certificates for being ”Friendly Facilities for Senior Citizens”. Let”s see how they did it.
