Helping low-income families

We start today”s show in Vietnam, where Tzu Chi volunteers have been working with a local woman”s organization, to help low income families through monthly home visitations. After months of support, volunteers were happy to see life improving for the care recipients.

(1) Needed, respectful, direct aid

Material and emotional support is even more urgently needed in North Korea, where its people suffered a string of natural disasters caused by cold weather, droughts, floods, and storms from 2010 to 2011, which led to a serious food shortage. On August 21, and again on October 2, volunteers flew to the country to assess local needs. Based on the results of the surveys, Master Cheng Yen decided to launch a major aid mission, which took place from November 11-13. The distributions delivered much-needed aid directly into the hands of North Korean villagers.

Power is like a rope; it binds the body, the mind and the spirit.

3,2,1 action!

Back in Taiwan, Tzu Chi University”s annual Chinese Language and Culture Camp, held for teenagers from overseas, has 145 attendants from Singapore and Malaysia this year. Recently, an excursion was organized to Hualien”s Da Ai TV station, where camp attendants learned more about news and TV program production. We join the young adults at Da Ai TV”s film studio.

S African volunteers visit Hualien

Last week, Tzu Chi volunteers from across the world returned to Taiwan, to receive their commissioner and Tzu Cheng credentials. After the seminar, some volunteers stayed behind to learn more about Tzu Chi”s work in Taiwan. In the next story we stay in Hualien, where Zulu volunteers from South Africa visited the Tzu Chi Hospital, as well as the local prison, hoping to inspire more people to serve humanity with their music and life-stories.

Through conservation we can give the Earth a chance to breath, and the environment a chance to recover.
Instead calling for others to follow, we should lead by example. Everyone must reach out their hands for the world.

Organic farming in Suzhou

Tzu Chi volunteers in Suzhou, China have embarked on a sustainable farming project, by creating the ”Tzu Chi Organic Ecological Farm” in the hills above the busy city near Shanghai. The budding farmers are employing modern-day technology and the latest scientific methods to work in harmony with nature. But when we joined them, they were using some low-tech but effective techniques to clear the ground of weeds and rocks.

Promoting vegetarianism in Hanwang

Staying in China, in Hanwang of Sichuan province, since October Tzu Chi volunteers have been giving seminars on environmentalism and vegetarianism. In the program, volunteers used video clips and short plays to help the local residents understand that meatless food is both healthy and easy to make.

Plastic bags for recycle

If you put your heart into doing something for the greater good, you”ll soon be joined by other people who are inspired to do the same. That was the case for Tzu Chi volunteers in Taiwan”s Tainan, who go to the Zhonzheng business district twice a week to collect unwanted plastic bags from shops. The recycling program has been so successful that all the shops are now taking part, doing what they can to look after the environment.

On Saturday, Tzu Chi will hold this year”s New Shoots Scholarship Award Ceremony for students in Taiwan”s Hualien County. Two of the recipients are sisters, Zhong Yaqin (鍾亞琴) and Zhong Yazhen (鍾亞珍). Since their mother passed away in 2010, the girls and their youngest sister, who suffers from cerebral palsy, rely on her father”s odd jobs to support the family. However, the two girls know to count their blessings, and even donate part of their scholarship to those in greater need.
