Coming up in today”s show, 120,000 bottles of drinking water reach Bangkok, to help thirsty soldiers, working on the frontline of the flood disaster.
Seven months after the tsunami, we check back on the progress of recovery in one of the worst-hit cities on the northeast coast of Japan.
And a tribal elder from the Amis indigenous community in Taiwan is on a mission to restore life in his village by promoting organic farming.

1.泰慈濟Tzu Chi drinking water arrives

120,000 bottles of drinking water from Malaysia, reached Bangkok on Monday, and were delivered to the Armed Forces Center, to be distributed to military personnel, currently battling Thailand”s floods. The Chair of the Armed Forces Women”s Association personally thanked Tzu Chi for the donation.

經由馬來西亞慈濟分會,所調集的12萬瓶飲用水,周一 抵達泰國的陸軍俱樂部,要發送給泰國當地的水患居民,泰國陸軍夫人聯誼會主席,代表救災官兵向慈濟致意。



2.泰志工送米糧Helping families cut off by floods

Last week Bangkok”s western district of Thonburi came face to face with the flooding that has devastated the nation for the past three months. Volunteers were later informed that several care recipients were close to running out of food and water, and immediately moved to deliver supplies to the families.

上周,泰國曼谷西部的吞武里縣,也面臨三個月來,其他地區所經歷的水患,志工們後來才得知,許多照顧戶的家裡不只淹水,但家裡的糧食與水幾乎都沒有了,志工們馬上動員送上食物與水。



3.薩爾瓦多第五天Free clinic at Da Ai Village

Central America has also been hit by flooding. In El Salvador, the visiting disaster assessment team from the United States took the opportunity to give some lessons to local volunteers. And, working together with a local NGO, the team organized a free clinic at the Da Ai village in Sacacoyo.

中南美洲水患受災嚴重,在薩爾瓦多,美國賑災團也把握機會,為當地志工舉辦培訓課程,也與當地公益團體合作,共同在鄉米可大愛村舉辦義診服務。



4.撥雲見(建)日(1)Too little too late?

The Japanese government is still struggling with the massive scale of the disaster that hit the country on March 11. One of the worst-hit places was Ishinomaki. All the homes by the ocean were washed away in the tsunami. The government plans to move everyone inland, and, at the same time, build a two-story high seawall, to defend the city. But the pace of recovery has been slow. We go to Ishinomaki to find out more.

日本政府仍然努力對抗,311日本大地震後的復原工作,其中受創嚴重的是宮城縣石卷市,住宅被海嘯捲走,現在日本政府計畫要將住宅全部移往內陸,同時還要建設超過二層樓高的防波堤,保護這個城市,不過,復原工作緩慢,我們一起到石卷市去看看。



5.路邊董事長(2)粱金塗Liang Jintu”s story

Go to Taiwan”s Changhua County and you may find Tzu Chi volunteer Liang Jintu(粱金塗). A smooth-talking shop-owner, Mr. Liang once took his business nationwide, until a Tzu Chi meeting transformed him. Here is his story.

台灣彰化秀水有位慈濟志工梁金塗,在市場開了一間童裝店,外表油裡油氣,說話粗裡粗氣的他,因為一場慈濟聚會而改變了一生,以下是他的故事。



6.同心健康菜園Organic farming in Yongfu

In the indigenous Amis settlement of Yongfu(永福) in Taitung County, one tribal elder is on a mission to restore his community by promoting organic farming. Once the project gets off the ground, the elder hopes the young people will return to the village.

台東縣長濱鄉,多數為阿美族的永福社區,一位部落長老積極推動無毒農業,希望有朝一日成功後,能吸引部落裏的年輕人回來傳承。



7.巴生助學發放Tzu Chi New Shoots scholarship fund

Over in Malaysia, the Tzu Chi Klang Branch has handed out more than 12,000 ”New Shoots” scholarships to underprivileged students, in the past five years. This year, 127 schools applied to Tzu Chi, and nearly 2,000 students received funds.

慈濟馬來西亞巴生支會,連續五年頒發新芽助學金,至今已幫助大約一萬兩千人次,今年,來自127間中小學提出申請,約有2千位孩子成功獲得新芽助學金。

1918
Weimar Republic
After suffering defeat in World War I, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany was deposed by the country”s left wing parties in the November Revolution, and the Weimar Republic replaced the imperial government on this day in 1918. A system of liberal democracy was practiced until Adolf Hitler rose to power in 1933 and established the Third Reich.

1937
Battle of Shanghai
Following the Marco Polo Bridge Incident of July 7, 1937 which marked Japan”s full scale invasion of China, the Japanese army began its siege of Shanghai on August 13th of the same year. Involving nearly one million troops, it was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the Second Sino-Japanese War. On this day in 1937, Japanese forces would take control of the city.

1970
Adieu, General de Gaulle
A veteran of World War I and the general who led the Free French Forces during World War II, Charles de Gaulle passed away on this day in 1970 two weeks short of his 80th birthday. General de Gaulle helped found the French Fifth Republic and was elected its President.

1989
The Fall of Berlin Wall
Due to a mistaken announcement of Gunter Schabowski, spokesman for the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, which ruled East Germany, people were misled to believe that the country had immediately opened its borders to everyone. Thousands of East Germans gathered at the Berlin Wall waiting to cross over to the West, which led to the fall of the wall. It was the first step towards German reunification.

1990
Death of Tai Jingnong
Born in China”s Anhui Province, Tai Jingnong (臺靜農) first established himself as an essayist then a writer. After witnessing the Chinese revolution he came to Taiwan in 1946 where he served as the director of the Chinese Department at National Taiwan University for 20 years. He died at the age of 89 on this day in Taipei.

2008
Tzu Chi in Zimbabwe
Due to political instabilities and hyperinflation, many people living in Zimbabwe”s poor areas were on the verge of starvation in 2008. On this day, local Tzu Chi volunteers and those from South Africa arrived at Beta Bricks Village to deliver instant corn powder, cooking oil, bread and clothes to the poor, which kept them fed for a month.

1918年,威瑪憲法,德意志共和國,第一次世界大戰結束,德國戰敗,左派在11月引發革命,逼退德皇威廉二世,帝國瓦解,1918的這天由威瑪共和取代實行民主政治直到1933,希特勒掌權,成立納粹第三帝國。

1937年,松滬會戰,上海淪陷,1937年77盧溝橋事變之後,日本展開全面侵華行動,從八月十三號開始包圍上海,中日雙方出動將近共一百萬兵力,是八年抗戰規模最大死傷最慘重的戰役,而1937年的這天上海全市淪陷。

1970年,永遠的將軍,戴高樂逝世,參與過一次世界大戰,並在二次世界大戰中,領導自由法國運動的戴高樂將軍,1970年的這天,在80歲生日前兩個禮拜逝世,戴高樂將軍協助成立法蘭西第五共和國,並獲選為總統。

1989年,東德開放邊界,柏林圍牆倒塌,由於東德共產黨政治局發言人的誤解,導致民眾誤以為東德的國境全面開放,數以萬計的東德人 為了前往西德,湧向柏林圍牆邊界檢查哨,促成柏林圍牆倒塌,這也是德國統一的第一步。

1990年,遺墨留香,臺靜農病逝,出生於中國安徽的臺靜農,早年以短篇小說見長,中年後以書藝聞名,目賭舊中國的變遷,1946年來到台灣,任台大中文系主任20年,這天以89歲高齡病逝於台北。

2008年,辛巴威通貨膨脹,慈濟援助貧民,由於辛巴威政局動盪,引發通貨膨脹,窮困地區甚至出現饑荒,當地慈濟志工與南非慈濟人合作,2008年的這天在北塔磚窯村,致贈玉米粉、食用油、麵包,以及衣物給當地居民,讓他們一個月內衣食無缺。



9.萬里居家打掃22-year-old mother of 3

She is only 22 years old, but Ms. Liang(梁) from Taiwan is already a mother of three children, two of whom are mentally handicapped. Her biggest challenge is not taking care of the children, but keeping the house clean. So, Tzu Chi volunteers came to teach the young mother how to do it.

新北市萬里 22歲的梁女士,已經養育三個小孩,但其中兩個發展遲緩,不過她面臨最大的難題不是照顧孩子,而是如何整理家務,因此,志工前來教導這位媽媽如何打掃家裡環境。

Flooding in Central America has created a humanitarian disaster in Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. At the end of today”s show, we take you to the Jing Si Abode in Hualien, where the nuns and volunteers got up at 2 o”clock in the morning to start packing boxes of instant rice, and then loaded them onto a container at 8 to be sent to the disaster area.
