Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Dennis Wu. Thank you for joining us.

We hear from Tzu Chi”s disaster assessment team from the United States as they wrap up their mission in El Salvador. As Tzu Chi volunteers in Thailand continue to tend to flood victims, whether in Ayutthaya or Bangkok, bottled water is being delivered from Malaysia. And, in Taiwan”s Changhua, a simple noodle-shop owner is committed to sharing Master Cheng Yen”s burden, by taking on Tzu Chi”s work.

US disaster team in Central America

Having completed their missions in Honduras and Guatemala earlier, volunteers in the Tzu Chi flood disaster assessment team, from the United States, are on the final leg of their current mission to Central America. On the third day of their trip in El Salvador, they checked up on previous Tzu Chi projects, including a well and the growing community around it; and the 2nd Da Ai Village in Chamingo, which they visited with a former First Lady. On the fourth day, the volunteers surveyed the needs of a flood-hit community by a river.

Latest assessment at Banplab Township

We now dedicate this segment to flood relief in Thailand. On Sunday, November 6, an international Tzu Chi disaster relief team visited flood victims in Banplab Township, of Bang Pa In County, in Ayutthaya Province. The team members came from the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. As local volunteers had previously provided a week of hot meals, at the end of September, they were no strangers to the local residents. Like seeing old friends, the villages talked about their troubles, since the deluge. The volunteers said they hoped to return soon, with further assistance.

Aid supplies for flood victims

Before the weekend, Tzu Chi volunteers from Taiwan, the Philippines and Thailand, organized an aid distribution at a temporary shelter set up in Dhurakij Pundit University, in Bangkok. Although some parts of the university are under water, the chancellor still opened the gymnasium, situated on higher ground, as an emergency shelter. It took the Tzu Chi disaster relief team only a day to prepare and deliver daily essentials, to the flood victims taking refuge inside.

Community comes together to help

In addition to handing out provisions for flood victims, the Tzu Chi flood relief team in Thailand that we saw int the previous two reports is making daily visits to, and hot food for, those taking refuge at a temporary shelter, set up at Bangkok”s Government Administration Center. This delivery of human warmth has moved local residents to make an even greater use of their weekends, by helping run the soup kitchen for the disaster victims.

Fresh drinking water for Thailand

As you may remember, the Thailand flood began as early as three months ago and eve now much of the country remain under water. Besides possible health hazards and shortage on food, fresh drinking water has been increasingly in demand. To address the situation, Tzu Chi Thailand Chapter requested help from Tzu Chi headquarters in Taiwan which notified the Tzu Chi Selangor Chapter in neighboring Malaysia. The Chapter immediately contacted local suppliers, and on November 3rd, sent 5,040 cases of bottled water to Thailand by land.

Eco-friendly Tzu Chi grounds

Tzu Chi”s architecture strives to be both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly. At the Tzu Chi grounds in Suzhou, China, ground-source heat-pumps are used to help keep the building warm in winter and cool in summer. The cutting-edge technology has cut the electricity bill by over half and help minimize impact on our environment! Let”s take a look.

Yang Xinying (楊信義) of Changhua County”s Puyan inherited a 40 year-old noodle stand from his father. Besides running the popular restaurant, the simple man is also a Tzu Chi volunteer leader. Even though every lunch and dinner is extraordinarily busy, Yang Xinyin is devoted to serving Tzu Chi”s missions, for he loves the Buddhist NGO and its founder Master Cheng Yen.
