The dark side of Lantern Festival
In Taiwan, Lantern Festival was just celebrated this past Monday. As people enjoyed the day in various parts of the country, they seemed to forget the impact of these celebrations on our environment. Here is a closer look.

Tzu Chi Academy celebrates New Year

A fire in the Santa Cruz area of Manila in the Philippines destroyed 20 houses, displacing 47 families. In the immediate aftermath, Tzu Chi volunteers distributed aid to the victims.

Pooling goodwill and love
At a recent workshop held in Hualien, Taiwan for Tzu Chi collegiate youth officers, a lecture on Tzu Chi”s aid relief to North Korea helped the young volunteers realize just how fortunate they are. Later, the participants formally donated the coin banks they had saved up to Tzu Chi to help the needy.

New Year greeting for Master Cheng Yen
To welcome Chinese New Year and to send their greetings to Master Cheng Yen, Tzu Chi volunteers in Taipei”s Daan District put together a dharma vessel performance. The show was delivered to the Master in Hualien”s Jing Si Abode via a video link.

Media volunteers grow in numbers
Given the technical skills you need, and the cost of buying a video camera, media volunteers in Indonesia are few and far between. But recently, local volunteer Lin Yongguang(林永光) - showed how it was possible to be a media volunteer, and inpsired a number of local volunteers to join a media training course.

From receiving to giving
For the Chinese New Year Holiday, volunteers at the Kulua Lumpur and Selangor Branch in Malaysia invited care recipients to a special get-together. Among those serving the guests were Cheng Meirong(陳妹蓉) and her son, Liu Zhiqiang(劉志強), who were originally care recipients themselves. Let”s find out what had inspired to join volunteers” ranks.

Smokers at risk of dementia?
According to a recent study from the UK, there may be a link between smoking and dementia. Testing subjects over a period of 25 years, the scientists found that the memories and thinking abilities of smokers declined faster than non-smokers. If the risk is real, it is one more good reason to give up cigarettes.

In our featured report on Taiwan”s traditional trades, we meet Beijing opera cast members, to find out more about the art.
