On Sunday, February 5th, which was the day before the Lantern Festival in Taiwan, Tzu Chi volunteers went to Zhongshan Park in Pingtung County to host a free clinic, with free haircut, for the homeless. 70-year-old Lin Xiuying(林秀英), who went for the services, donated half of what she had on her back to the foundation.

Staying in Taiwan, during the recent training seminar held in Hualien for Tzu Chi volunteers from abroad, caregivers from Australia and New Zealand shared their experiences in flood and earthquake relief efforts that took place last year. The discussion proved to be invaluable for all the aid workers.

Another similar Tzu Chi workshop was held in Tainan, but was targeted at a younger age group. During the camp, Tzu Chi Collegiate Youth volunteers from the city learned more about Tzu Chi values, and also how to be more helpful when they return home.

Tzu Chi care recipient Lan Jiansong藍健松 lives in Taichung”s Dali District. Recently, volunteers visited Lan”s partner, who is in hospital recovering from an illness. They also decided that before she got released from hospital, they would help clean up her home, thus giving her a fresh start.

Do not belittle small amounts of money, for their sum can serve a great purpose. Do not develop a habit of lavish spending, for a thrifty and simple living is the key to abundance.

Over the weekend, a one-day seminar was conducted for Tzu Chi volunteers across Taiwan, using video conferencing to bring everyone together. Lecturers at the seminar made an appeal to the participants to not only follow Master Cheng Yen closely on the path to enlightenment, but also to put love into action and make a difference.

Last weekend marked the third anniversary of the passing of Master Sheng Yen, the founder of Dharma Drum Mountain. Master Sheng Yen actively promoted the idea of the development of the spirit, in order to deal with a changing world and to discover true wisdom through the Dharma. At the memorial service, attendants, including Taiwanese government officials and prominent figures, signed a declaration in support of the Master”s Spiritual Preservation Movement.

In Manila, in the Philippines, students of Tzu Chi”s third career training program recently took part in their graduation ceremony. The students all felt empowered by the program that helped equip them with professional skills.

Wu Lichun(吳麗春) is the wife of a dialysis patient undergoing treatment at the Butterworth Tzu Chi Dialysis Center in Malaysia. To reciprocate Tzu Chi”s aid to her family, Wu Lichun decided to serve as a volunteer with the Foundation.

On Soft Power
Soft power is the ability to harbor gratitude, respect and love for all those around you.

To do so, you must treat everyone as a relative or close friend - with the utmost sincerity and trust.

Recently, Tzu Chings from Penghu Technology University visited a local nursing home, and their presence brought plenty of smiles to the seniors. Let”s take a look.

It”s lantern festival season in Taiwan, which means it”s a topical time to go to Lugang鹿港, to seek out some traditional lantern makers. The once booming business is now on the decline, as there are only two handmade lantern stores left in Lugang. One belongs to nationally acclaimed lantern-maker, Wu Dunhou. We went to the 70-year-old store, to meet the old master”s sons, who are carrying on the family tradition.

The founder of the lantern store in Lugang that we just saw is Mr. Wu Dunhou, who has been making lanterns for a lifetime. The craftsman earned numerous awards from home and abroad. And although he is now 87 years old, Wu Dunhou has lost none of his youthful enthusiasm for painting lanterns.

Lanterns won”t disappear anytime soon as long as Lantern Festival is still celebrated. In Luzhou, Taipei, on the day of the festival Tzu Chi volunteers went around the community with lanterns and Jing Si aphorisms to mark a joyous end to the Lunar New Year. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.
