In Jordan, the Be-dou-in are an ethnic group of A-rabs. These nomadic shepherds, traditionally live in the desert where they settle in tents and migrate to where there is water and grass. Although they often lack supplies, they still lead their lives with a positive attitude. To make sure they live adequately, Tzu Chi volunteers regularly send foods and supplies. Here”s more.

In China, the Tzu Chi Suzhou(蘇州) Health Promotion Center has been offering a variety of classes in tea and flower arrangement, to help patients find ways to combat stress. It has already been proven, that the long-term effects of such emotions have a negative impact on the body”s car-di-o-vas-cular and cerebro-vas-cular system. Thus, although the classes seem to be nothing more than a pleasant pastime, they are actually at the front line of keeping patients healthy.

Every year, Tzu Chi partners with El Con-ci-lio to safeguard the health of Hispanic workers, who arrived in the United States searching for the American dream. A recent free clinic, was held at the Han-shaw Middle School in Mo-de-sto, where many lined up, as early as 5am for a spot to see a doctor.

Also in the United States, to help those who suffer from stress related illnesses, Tzu Chi invited a specialist, trained in teaching others how to release their stress from laughing. Every month, a laugh therapy session is held, and participants come to laugh their stress away. One participant joined because she was under a lot of pressure from taking care of her father and her husband, but after this much needed session, she feels ready to face the obstacles along the way.

Recently Tzu Chi Canada Chapter celebrated its 20th anniversary, with the local government even announcing a ”Tzu Chi Day” as a way to show their appreciation, of the good work Tzu Chi has done in the area. Tzu Chi Canada Chapter”s director He Guoqing(何國慶) recently traveled to Taiwan, to share the good news with Master Cheng Yen. He said in the future, volunteers in Canada will continue to inspire others to walk the Bodhisattva path. Here”s more.

Wisdom remains elusive for those who fail to realize that life is filled with suffering.

Around the world, Tzu Chi volunteers have a tradition of caring for seniors at nursing homes. In Indonesia, volunteers recently visited the Sen-ja-ra-wi nursing home, to care for the 85 seniors there, who have no family or have families that are too busy to care for them. Meanwhile, in Shanghai, China, a senior at the Yangpufu(楊浦福) nursing home, made a pair of baby shoes to give to a new born baby. The baby”s father was so touched, that he decided to visit the nursing home with Tzu Chi volunteers and vowed to become a volunteer as well.

To show what it means to put love into practice, the teachers at the Tzu Chi Kindergarten in Penang, Malaysia brought their students to the construction site of the Tzu Chi”s education center and dialysis center. The students learned of the hard work and effort that has gone into the construction, and also had a chance to show their gratitude to these construction workers. Let”s take a look.

Staying in Malaysia, Penang is a beautiful city, and the cleaning staff play an important role, in maintaining the city”s appearance. Tzu Chi Kindergarten in Butterworth recently invited the cleaning staff, to lead the students in cleaning up their surrounding environment.

In Taiwan, the Central Taiwan Tzu Chi New Shoots Scholarship award ceremony will be held on October 20th. Altogether 1551 students will receive scholarship aid. Among them will be fifth grader, Chen Jiahui陳佳惠, who handles much of the housework while also looking after her sick parents. Chen will also be awarded the New Shoots Filial Piety Award.

In Taichung(台中), a piano recital was held on Oct 13 th, with ten performers from both Taiwan and Japan all suffering from some type of mental or physical disability. However the performers have not let their disability hinder their passion for music and, in doing so, have proved that anything is possible.

At the end of the show, we stay in Taiwan, where the Taoyuan(桃園) Jing Si Hall is holding an exhibition base on stories of a hundred volunteers. Some devote themselves to volunteer work while others learned to be content and be grateful after joining Tzu Chi. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

After the fires, Tzu Chi volunteers arrived on scene, to deliver emergency cash, daily necessities and most importantly much-needed emotional support to the fire victims.

After the 3/11 Earthquake devastated Japan last year, many victims were inspired to join volunteer organizations such as Tzu Chi, as a way to give back to their communities. Among them is O-ku-da Ma-sa-yuki, who survived the disaster by hiding in his neighbor”s house. After received help from Tzu Chi, he decided it was time to start giving back and joined Tzu Chi. Here”s more.

Moving to Malaysia, volunteer Zhang Weihong (張偉紅), has started to make handi-work for children, after joining as a Da Ai mother; however, with the increasing costs of raw materials, she started to use recyclables to make souvenirs instead.

According to statistics, one out of every four people in Taiwan, is at risk of cancer. Those cancer patients, often suffer from severe side effects from their chemo or radiation therapy. Individuals who suffer from side effects, might want to consult a Chinese Medicine doctor, to see how traditional Chinese Medicine might help to alleviate the symptoms.

On the heart of a Bodhisattva

Guanyin, a Bodhisattva associated with compassion, is a model of kindness Master Cheng Yen hopes people can emulate. By extending a helping hand to those who are suffering, your compassion equals that of a Bodhisattva.

Hair washing may be easy for most of us ; however, for bed-ridden patients in the hospital, it is a challenge for both the patient and their family. Inside this hospital, one is able to find a hair salon that provides such service to patients in need. Let”s take a look.

In Taiwan, Hualien”s Dong Hwa(東華) University, is working with Asia Pacific, Fuel Cell Technologies to design new hydrogen-powered vehicles, that use the hydrogen generated, during the paper making process, at Chung Hwa”s(中華) Pulp Cor-poration. Thanks to co-operation between academic institutions and private sectors, hydrogen is now being turned into a re-new-able energy source.

At the end of the show, we go to Australia, where Tzu Chi volunteers joined local environmental protection staff, in weaving unwanted Gla-di-o-lus, since the flower has started to threaten the ecological balance in the area.

4. 快行優先BRT(八)交通新思維

First up in the Philippines, Tzu Chi volunteers hold a seminar each month for its scholarship recipients. This time, Tzu Chi volunteers invited 389 high school and university students to attend. Apart from sharing tips on time management, the volunteers also arranged for these students to experience the inconveniences of a handicapped person.

Double Ten Day is a public holiday in Taiwan, but Tzu Chi volunteers at the recycling station in Hualien still spent the day sorting recyclables. Among them was 72-year-old Lin Shuxian (林淑賢), who moved to Hualien from Hong Kong. Over the past 3 years, come rain or shine, the grandma is always the first to arrive at the station and the last to leave.

We stay in Asia but move to Indonesia, near the north-east coast of Jakarta, sits an island that is only four hectares in size. Since 1985, Hu-sain and his wife have been living on this island and runs a small shop for a living. In 2008, Husain’s wife contracted cataracts, but Tzu Chi volunteers were there to help her get surgery. Now, the couple collects recyclables on the island to show their appreciation for Tzu Chi’s help.

Compassion is not only expressed through words; it is to be realized through service to humanity.

4. 快行優先BRT(八)交通新思維

In association with our series of feature reports on BRT systems, we return to South Korea, to look at how the capital of Seoul is reinventing itself as a city for the people. By adding more green spaces for the use of pedestrians and residents, while cutting down on car use with the promotion of efficient modes of public transportation, Seoul has shown that it is serious when it comes to re-inventing itself as a eco-friendly urban landscape. As a micro-cosm of changes the city has undertaken, we take a look at the story of Seoul’s Cheong-gye-cheon Creek. Once a polluted drainage ditch, the creek is now, once again, a city landmark enjoyed by residents young and old.

After the 3/11 Earthquake devastated Japan last year, many charity organizations arrived in the worst-hit areas to offer both emotional and financial support to the quake victims. Today, we take a look at the story of Uchita Katsuo, who has been providing freshly grown vegetables from his organic farm, to quake survivors in the disaster area. Here’s more.

On Frugalness

Throughout the course of history, human activities have contributed directly to the destruction of our environment, resulting in disasters that cannot be averted. In times of peace and harmony, it is ever more important to promote the ideas of frugality and benevolence to save the world before it’s too late.

In England, Queen Elizabeth’s father, King George the Sixth, suffered from a speech defect that made him stutter. Luckily, with help from an Australian speech therapist, the king overcame his fear of speaking and the moving story was later turned into the movie, ”The King’s Speech” starring Colin Firth. In Taiwan, there are many like King George who have speech impediments, whether caused by autism or hearing problems. And in our feature reports on Taiwan’s unique trades, we meet one speech therapist, Zhang Jingwen(張靜文), to see how she is helping these patients with the same condition speak fluently.

In Taiwan, Lv Yuejun(呂岳駿), a kindergartener, at the National Taichung Special Education School for the Visually Impaired, became fully blind due to a brain tumor. However, his condition does not stop him from playing piano and singing. Recently, he even won second place in a singing contest in his community. Let’s take a look.

Next, we take a look at the life of leather artisan Cai Yichen’s(蔡亦宸). Since he was young, Cai has had to take care of his mother and five sisters who all suffered from a genetic disease called spino-cere-bellar a-taxia, which causes increasing degradation of body control. Unfortunately, at the age of 28, the disease also struck Cai Yichen(蔡亦宸); however, he has not given up on life, but instead, has learned the skills of leather carving to support himself.

We go to United States at the end of our program, and join Tzu Chi volunteers from the New York Tzu Chi Chapter, as they held a blood donation activity at YMCA. Meanwhile, TIMA medical staff also organized a ”Health Day” at a local high school, to provide medical consultation for those in need. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.

●Coming up in the show today, the Tzu Chi Australia Chapter celebrate its 20th anniversary, by performing a sign language musical to promote filial piety.

●In our continuing look at BRT systems, we find out how the eco-friendly transportation runs on natural gas and electricity.

●And, we meet Ye Qingfu(葉清福), who is responsible for delivering medication to tuberculosis patients in Nanao(南澳) District, every day.

20th anniversary of TC Australia Chapter

Self disciplined and diligent

3. 快行優先BRT(七)友善交通 BRT, the future trend of transportation

1900 Assisting Tzu Chi volunteers

Medication delivery staff in Taiwan

20th anniversary of TC Australia Chapter

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Tzu Chi Australia Chapter. To celebrate the occasion, volunteers put on 4 sessions of performance on the Sutra of Profound Gratitude to Parents, at Sydney’s Concourse Theater Hall. Beside spreading the message of filial piety, Tzu Chi volunteers from the 6 cities all hoped, to introduce Tzu Chi to the mainstream audiences.

Self disciplined and diligent

Every year, Tzu Chi will award New Shoots Scholarship to students who excel academically. In Penghu are 2 brothers, Cai Zhenliang (蔡振亮) and Cai Zhenhao (蔡振豪), whose parents divorced when they were young, and the family’s source of income is dependent on their father’s odd jobs. When they return home from school, the pair also prepare dinner and does housework.

3. 快行優先BRT(七)友善交通 BRT, the future trend of transportation

As our viewers might know by now, the BRT system offers several advantages over traditional buses, in terms of service, speed and price. However, what you may not know, is that in countries such as South Korea, the BRT is leading the way in changes to environmentally friendly buses, that run on natural gas or electricity. As well, the buses are all equipped with handicapped-friendly features, that ensure every citizen has easy access to public transportation.

1900 Assisting Tzu Chi volunteers

After the 3/11 Earthquake in 2011, Japan Tzu Chi volunteers arrived at the city of Hi-ga-shi-ma-tsu-shi-ma, to distribute consolation cash and relief supplies. Among the quake survivors is Su-ga-wa-ra Mi-chio, who is a retired member of the Japan Self Defense Forces. In spite of being a disaster victim himself, Mr. Su-ga-wa-ra decided to join the volunteers’ ranks.

Medication delivery staff in Taiwan

To help tuberculosis patients receive the treatment they need, the World Health Organization established a “Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course”, also known as DOTS, where an assigned staff will deliver medication to the patients each day. The disease has a 95 percent chance of making a full recovery, and only needs a 6-12 month continuous treatment on the right medicine. In our feature reports on Taiwan’s unique trades, we meet one of these medication delivery staff, Ye Qingfu(葉清福), who is in charge of delivering medication to patients living in the Nanao(南澳) District.

Helping those in rural areas

In 1953, Dr. Roland Brown arrived in Hualien, Taiwan, to help those suffering from illnesses. He later established the Men-no-nite Christian Hospital, hoping to provide better medical services to local residents. To thank Dr. Brown for his contribution over the past 40 years, Taiwan’s National Immigration Agency granted him, a permanent residency visa.

Tzu Chi care recipient, Ye Shouliang

In Penang, Malaysia, Tzu Chi care recipient Ye Shouliang(葉首良), has been taking care of his three daughters after his wife passed away in 1998. However in 2006, Ye had a stroke that left him paralyzed and unable to work. To help the family, in 2007, Tzu Chi began providing them with both financial subsidies and emotional support.

Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital staff outing

Back in Taiwan, the Dalin (大林) Tzu Chi Hospital recently held an annual staff outing. Unlike other companies, these outings are about doing good deeds for society, and this year it focused on bringing care and love to the elderly people in a nursing home. As many of the participating staff did not have any experience in interacting with senior residents, Tzu Chi volunteers were asked to share their tips.

We kick off today ’s show in China; after receiving news, of some 300 underprivileged student in need of tuition support, Xiamen Tzu Chi volunteers are carrying out home visitations, in hopes of providing scholarship funds, to help these children continue with their studies.

Staying in China, in traditional Chinese culture, children are often too shy to show their love to parents. To encourage residents to express their gratitude towards parents, Tzu Chi volunteers visited two companies in Dongguan(東莞), of Guagdong(廣東) Province, to share their personal experiences.

History is made up of each passing moment. Seize this moment to make history.

In the aftermath of Japan ’s 3/11 disasters, Tzu Chi distributed consolation cash to disaster victims in the worst-hit areas. Since then, Tzu Chi volunteers have been receiving thank-you letters and postcards from the quake survivors. Recently, the volunteers once again visited the Shio-ga-ma City in Miyagi Prefecture, to see how their old friends are doing.

4. 快行優先BRT(六)台灣BRT
In our continuing reports on the BRT system, we return to Taiwan, where the cities of Taichung and Kaohsiung, are currently in the process of finalizing plans for the building of BRT lines. Although public ridership is around 37 percent in Taipei and New Taipei City, it stands at 7.6 percent in Taichung and 6.6 percent in Kaohsiung. Currently these two cities are exploring ways, to encourage more residents to ride public transportation, and the BRT is front and center in both cities ’ plans for the future.

On Transforming the Mind

When coming into conflict with others, we should have the courage to repent and apologize. Be willing to communicate, and communicate well, so that no grudges are held and no negative karma is created.

In 2002, Dengue Fever infected some 5,000 people and took the lives of 21 in Southern Taiwan. To prevent the disease from spreading, apart from the local health bureau, the Environmental Protection Agency and even police officers have been mobilized, to encourage the general public to maintain a clean environment. An inspection team from Taiwan ’s Centers of Disease Control has been working hard over the past 10 years, to minimize the spreading of Dengue Fever.

Next, we join a group of inspection staff, as they go door to door in search of larvae, that might turn into dangerous mosquitoes. From garages, stock rooms, to abandoned toilets, all hidden corners are checked. Wearing their distinctive blue uniform, these inspection staff, who refer to themselves as ”Smurfs”, work all year round to keep Taiwan ’s residents, safe from the mosquito-born disease.

Also in Taiwan, we meet Yan Weiting (顏瑋婷), who was born without a right arm, but always sees the glass as half full. Yan has not let her disability stop her from playing table tennis or attending Chaoyang(朝陽) University of Technology in Taichung. She hopes to inspire others with disabilities, to not let their condition stop them from dreaming or living life to the fullest.

We stay in Taiwan at the end of our program, and join TIMA medical staff, as they held a free health check at Kaohsiung ’s Xishe(喜捨) Recycling Station, for its recycling volunteers and care recipients. A grandmom-and-grandson pair who received the medical service, were deeply grateful for Tzu Chi ’s help. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.

Last Sunday, October 7th, Tzu Chi volunteers in Indonesia, held an opening ceremony for their newly built Jing Si Hall, which is also the largest worldwide. Volunteers hope with a new spiritual ground, that they will be able to gather more people, to spread the love to those in need.

To celebrate the establishment of the Indonesia Jing Si Hall, Tzu Chi volunteers from the United States, Thailand, the Philippines, Taiwan and other countries all flew to Indonesia, to witness this historical moment. The volunteers also visited the Angke River, where Tzu Chi had helped with clean up, and the building of the Cengkareng Da Ai Village.

Construction work for Indonesia’s Jing Si Hall, began in May of 2009, and this year on October 7th, it was finally completed. To mark the occasion, for the past three months, volunteers have been preparing various performances including a sign language show, based on the treacherous journey taken by Venerable Jianzhen to spread Buddhism in Japan. In spite of the language barrier, the volunteers all did their best, to remeber the movements.

The opening of Indonesia’s Jing Si Hall, marks an important milestone of Tzu Chi’s work in the country. To prepare for the occasion, Jakarta Tzu Chi volunteers have united in doing all they can, to present a welcoming atmosphere. Among other activities, over the past three months, they have held 8 Jing Si Hall introductory seminars. During one introductory seminar, over 400 volunteers gathered to learn more about the Jing Si Hall.

5. 快行優先BRT(五)

In our feature reports, on BRT systems worldwide, today, we take a look at how the BRT is also addressing the social needs of a city. By bringing fast, convenient, and cheap public transportation to the poorer and remote areas that need it most.

On Simplicity

Social changes in the recent years mean that most people nowadays often eat out, spending less time at home and as a result losing the family feel. The emphasis on convenience

In Guatemala, Tzu Chi volunteers held a free clinic in San Agustin, a municipality of El Progreso, which is the poorest region of the country. Besides the poor living conditions, the lack of medical services also is a source of problems. Therefore, a local congressman sought help from Tzu Chi to hold a free clinic, in hopes of alleviating the pain and suffering brought by illnesses.

After Cyclone Nargis devastated Myanmar some four years ago, Tzu Chi has carried out short and long term relief work to help the Burmese people get back on their feet. Over the weekend, Myanmar’s education minister arrived in Taipei’s Guandu(關渡), to visit Tzu Chi’s Humanitarian Center. Let’s take a look.

In Malaysia, Zhao Lifeng (趙莉鳳) is an English speaking volunteer, at the Jing Si Books and Cafe in Penang. When there are overseas visitors at the bookstore, she will take charge of the introductions. Zhao(趙) was not a confident person when she first arrived, feeling that she was not able to assist much, because of her poor Chinese speaking abilities, but after a shift in mind-set, she turned to use her strong English abilities instead.

According to statistics, one out of every 600 newborns in Taiwan, is affected with cleft lip or pal-ate de-formity. Since 1989, Dr. Samuel Noordhoff has been working, to provide all children with the ability to smile without shame. What started in Taiwan has now traveled to 9 different countries and has helped over 1,400 patients.

First up, in Malaysia, Sun-gai Sedu is located about 30 minutes drive away from Klang, where a majority of the residents here are Indian immigrants. Last week, Tzu Chi volunteers invited medical staff from the local government hospitals, to provide health checkups for 80 residents.

Tzu Chings at the University of Malaysia Sabah hold tea gatherings, every year at the Kota Kinabalu Tzu Chi Liaison Office, to welcome their new students. During the event, Tzu Chings put on short skits and films, as a way to encourage students to join their ranks.

As students at Chiao Tai(僑泰) High School, in Taichung, took part in a 12-hour fasting event, the school authority designed a series of challenges, to help them learn to empathize with disaster victims. At the end of the day, the students gained a deeper understanding to the value of food, and the importance of team-work.

Putting into practice is better than listening. Taking action is better than talking.

4. 快行優先BRT(四)

In our continuing look at BRT systems, this time we travel to Seoul, in South Korea, where more residents are choosing to ride the BRT, as they find that the system is fast, convenient, and cheap. And that means a win-win situation for the city, as well as Seoul”s residents, who are enjoying all the benefits that the first class public transportation system has to offer.

As more consumers start to pay attention to environmental issues, companies are taking note, and designing products that are eco-friendly as well as functional. On October 4th, the fruit of their labors were displayed at the second annual Taiwan Green Classics Awards. DA.AI Technology was also among the companies present, showing off their newest and greenest products.

In Thailand, Tzu Chi volunteers from the Bangkok Tzu Chi Chapter have taken the lead in promoting recycling in their communities. Since the severe flooding that took place last year, Tzu Chi”s involvement in promoting recycling has received much support and acknowledgment from the public.

On Conservation

Environmentalism is about inspiring others to reduce, reuse and recycle, and spreading the ideal that conservation work must begin at the source. If you want your next life to be good, live this life honestly and honorably. Similarly, if you want to bring out the best in unwanted goods, you need to begin by properly recycling them.

Yesterday, we met a zoo keeper who takes care of animals, today, we are also meeting caregivers, but their recipients are orphaned children at Taipei”s Zongyi(忠義) Social Welfare Foundation. These caregivers are required to have licenses to care for the children, and they are also on a 24-hour rotating shift during which they take on the parenting roles.

Prior to the opening of the Jing Si Hall in Indonesia, on October 7th, Tzu Chi volunteers were all busy getting ready for the big day. Among the volunteers is breast cancer patient, Liao Xiulan(廖秀蘭), who says that doing good deeds bring happiness and is the best treatment for her illness.

In Taichung City”s Dongshi (東勢) District, a retired couple Cai Zhengxiong (蔡正雄) and Lai Guimei (賴貴美), is living their life to the fullest. They not only volunteer as English teachers at government organizations, but also help out as translators at the Dongshi (東勢) Department of Household Registration and Land Office.
