Moving supplies, preparing for disaster

In the United States, in preparation for the superstorm Hurricane Sandy, Tzu Chi’s New York Chapter has moved relief supplies to its Chinatown office. Over 1,000 portions of hot meals, daily necessities and blankets are ready to be distributed at a moment’s notice. Besides supplies, Tzu Chi has also set up a disaster coordination center to keep everyone abreast of the latest updates.

Rice distribution in Caloocan City

In the Philippines, Tzu Chi volunteer held a rice distribution in Calo-o-can City in which each household picked up 20 kilograms of rice. In total, 931 households received rice, while the number of families that received help was even greater than that.

Love to Zimbabwe from Taiwan

In Taiwan, the “Love to Zimbabwe” stationery drive kicked off at Tainan’s Tzu Chi Elementary School and received an enthusiastic response from all. Through Da Ai TV’s reports on Zimbabwe, the students saw for themselves, the harsh conditions in which the Zimbabwean children studied in.

(1) Growing food in the sky

In Taiwan, the residents of one apartment building in New Taipei City’s Linkou(林口) have come up with an ingenious plan, that not only beautifies their building, but also helps them cut down on food costs. On the roof-top of their building, they have set up their very own garden. Evenings and weekends will find many of the residents busy with their plants or discussing gardening tips with their neighbors, which has also helped bring the community closer together.

Teaching children of foreign spouses

Over the past few years, the composition of Taiwan’s population has been changing with the continuous increase in number of foreign spouses. For these new immigrants, language barriers and living environment are all challenges they need to overcome, especially when having to deal with their children’s education. Four years ago, Tzu Chi volunteers in New Taipei City’s Xindian(新店) District set up a reading center, where volunteers come to tutor the children of foreign spouses.

TC changing young lives with scholarship

In Malaysia’s Sabah, from June to August Tzu Chi mobilized 4,000 volunteers to conduct home visitations to children from low income households as part of the selection process for this year’s New Shoots Scholarships. In the end over 1,000 children from 60 different schools were chosen to receive the scholarship, while awards for filial behavior and scholastic merit were also handed out at the awards ceremony.

The role of a mother & a sister

Tzu Chi’s New Shoots Scholarship award helps those students who faces difficulties in continuing school, like fourth year student, Su Yiping(蘇怡萍) of National Chengchi(政治) University in Taiwan. Since the passing of her mother, Su has been taking on the role of mother to her younger sisters. Looking forward to graduation next year, Su Yiping’s(蘇怡萍) one wish is to secure a civil servant job to be able to continue to take care of her two sisters.

In our feature reports on Taiwan’s unique trades we meet tree doctor, Xiao Wenwei(蕭文偉) who works at the National Taiwan University Experimental Forest, which is the only research center for plants in Taiwan. The main goal of the job is to cure sickness in trees. Since trees cannot express their sickness; therefore, the job requires extra attentiveness. Xiao(蕭) says by curing old trees, he also gained valuable life experiences.

Art exchange between Taiwan & China

China Welfare Institute is China’s largest official agency responsible for social welfare. The Institute also sponsored an opera troupe composed of professional performers. Recently the troupe visited Taiwan to perform a stage play called “Bright Sunshine”, which portrayed the living conditions of mentally-challenged children. Hopefully, through such cross-strait art exchanges, Taiwan and China will find better mutual understanding.

In the Summer of 2012, the principal from Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy, led students to visit Taiwan and also visited Tzu Chi’s recycling station. Upon returning to the United States, the principal deemed “recycling” as required coursework in the new semester. The principal even invited Tzu Chi volunteers to the school, to explain to parents the importance of recycling. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.
