Tending to fire victims in Thailand

In Thailand’s Samut Prakan Province (北攬府), a fire broke out at 5.00am on October 21st due to a faulty electrical wire. Fortunately, no one was killed. Out of the 17 affected families, 6 were the houses of the Cambodian workers. On October 25th, Tzu Chi volunteer arrived to hand out emergency cash, blankets, straw mats and packs of relief supplies.

Alumni associations doing charity

In the Philippines, Tzu Chi volunteer, Cai Wanlei(蔡萬擂) is a former graduate of the local Chiang Kai Shek College. As the school is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Cai, who is part of the alumni association, came together with his high school friends to donate money to help cataract patients. After taking part in the 154th ophthalmology free clinic, the donation increased to nearly 30,000 USD, which means the number of patients who can now undergo surgery also increased from 50 to 200.

(2) A sandwich gardening method

In our continuing look at how city dwellers in Taiwan are using urban spaces to garden, we visit the home of He Junxian(何俊賢), a teacher who uses what is called a sandwich method to grow tasty, and 100 percent organic vegetables in his apartment building. Requiring minimal care and very little investment, the sandwich method is perfect for those that don’t have a lot of time or space, but still want to try growing their own vegetables.

A thoughtful young boy

Next, we meet one of Tzu Chi’s New Shoots Scholarship recipients, 3rd grader Zeng Hongqi(曾泓麒). Coming from a single-parent family, Zeng has taken on the responsibility, of caring for his brother who suffers from autism. Upon receiving the news that he was awarded the New Shoots Scholarship, Zeng says he want to use the money, to buy things for his family.

Helping single-parent families

In Malaysia’s Kota Kinabalu, after surveying over 1,000 families who are applying for Tzu Chi’s New Shoots Scholarship, Tzu Chi volunteers found that two out of every ten families they visited were single-parent families. 37-year-old Ros-bi-ca was one example. Thanks to the volunteers’ care and funding, her family now has the resources to get by, and her child is able to receive further education.

Coffee experts in Yunlin’s Gukeng

In today’s feature report on Taiwan’s fading trades, we travel to Yunlin’s Gukeng(古坑) Township, to meet a home-grown coffee expert, Zhang Laien(張萊恩). Since young, Zhang has followed his grandfather and father in growing coffee trees and producing locally grown coffee beans. Regardless of the tough competition from abroad, Zhang has never considered giving up and has even won an award for his efforts in producing “Made in Taiwan” coffee beans.

Ensuring Gukeng’s coffee shines on

Many consider the coffee produced in Yunlin’s Gukeng(古坑) Township, as the back bone of Taiwan’s coffee industry. Behind the scenes, however, are the hard work of many coffee farmers. Among them, 96-year-old Huang Gengzi(黃耕子) began planting and managing a coffee plant, 80 hectares in size since the Japanese colonial period. Today, despite the fall of the industry, Huang’s two sons have decided to return home and take on the family baton.

Celebrating Halloween

In the United States, students and parents at the Tzu Chi Great Love Elementary Schools and Kindergarten in different areas of Los Angeles, all celebrated Halloween, by making their own eco-friendly costumes. Meanwhile, the students from the San Dimas Tzu Chi Academy, donated their lolly money to help those in greater need.

The recent Hurricane Sandy have left a trail of destruction across the east coast of the United States, and many New Yorkers were forced to evacuate to temporary shelters. With request of help from the Office of Emergency Management, New York Tzu Chi volunteers came together and in 3 hours, prepared 700 servings of hot meals to help disaster victims. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for tuning in. Goodbye.
