In Indonesia, torrential rains which began on January 17th, have flooded many areas of the country. In the aftermath of the flooding, Tzu Chi carried out a series of relief work to help those affected by the disaster. Despite being flood victims themselves, many Tzu Chi volunteers set aside their own siuation, to assist those in need.

Staying in Indonesia, though floodwaters have subsided, with food shortage becoming a serious issue, food prices in the disaster areas have skyrocketed. To help, the Tzu Chi Indonesia Chapter and the Indonesia National Armed Forces have partnered up, to hand out more than 4,000 aid packs which included food and clean clothes, to flood victims in Pa-de-man-gan.

With the Lunar New Year just around the corner, Tzu Chi volunteers in Taichung(台中), Taiwan, helped care recipient, Ms. Zhang(張) clean up her living environment. As the woman is ill and her daughter’s legs are injured following an accident, the family was unable to clean up their house. To get the family ready to celebrate the coming festival, Tzu Chi volunteers were mobilized to give her house a huge make-over.

Moving to Taiwan’s Changhua(彰化), we meet another care recipient Mr. Wang(王) and his wife who both suffer mild mental disability. After discovering the couple had trouble maintaining a clean living environment at home, Tzu Chi volunteers and medical staff from the Taichung(台中) and Dalin(大林)Tzu Chi Hospitals, arrived bright and early one morning, to clean up the Wang(王) household for the upcoming holidays.

To clearly see the world, we need to constantly clear away the shadows in our minds.

In Guizhou(貴州) Province, China, the topography of the land is made up mostly of limestone rocks, making it difficult for local residents to farm the most basic of crops, thus, the 48 counties in Guizhou(貴州) are listed as impoverished, according to the country’s living standards. Take Loudian(羅甸) County, as an example, where one third of the residents get by, on a yearly income of less than 2,300 Chinese Yuan, which is around 370 USD. Today, we start a new series of reports on "Spreading Love to Guizhou", as we look in to the difficult living conditions of the local residents.

At the Tzu Chi New Zealand Chapter, Tzu Chi volunteers and a group of students on school holiday have come together, to make the wisdom and blessing red envelopes, to present to their participants at the coming year-end blessing ceremony. Let’s take a look.

In Taiwan, electricity is cheap and plentiful. But in the Solomon Islands, except for those living in its capital, most residents still get by wood stoves for their cooking and heating needs. As part of its ongoing assistance to its diplomatic ally, Taiwan sent a team of technicians, to introduce bio-gas technology into the nation’s outlying islands. By turning pig excrement into a renewable energy, the team is not only lifting living standards in the Solomon Islands, but also helping safeguard the local environment.

On Raising the Mind

It is Tzu Chi volunteers’ duty to guide those they meet and help them realize the truth that suffering arises from desire and ignorance. From a single thought, this world can become either the Pure Land or a living hell. Therefore, when raising donations, emphasis should be on inspiring compassion in others.

In today’s feature reports on "Reading for Love", we meet Chen Youzhen(陳宥臻), who suffers from multiple disabilities after being born prematurely. Despite being blind and unable to move around freely, Chen is determined to pursue her dream. Every Friday, Chen gets herself to the Maria Welfare Foundation and broadcasts her writings to the students there. As well, Youzhen read books through the help of others, in order to get inspiration to prepare for her broadcasting materials. She says, it is through reading that she finds the strength to go on.

In Taiwan’s Tainan(台南), we meet mentally challenged A-Ji(阿吉), who after graduating from high school this year, found a job at a car wash, with help from social workers at the Eden Social Welfare Foundation. To pay the love forward, A-Ji decided to join the organization in helping those in greater need.
