Coming up in the show today, Tzu-Chi Philippines holds a training workshop for Manila”s local volunteers, who were victims of Typhoon Ketsana. Tzu Chi”s New Shoots Scholarship program in Taiwan is reaching out to help needy children. We meet one young recipient who has to help support his family. And, we start a brand new feature series today, on the implication of Taiwan”s low rice production and heavy reliance on grain imports.

1.菲本土培訓More locals become trainee volunteers
In the Philippines, ever since Tzu Chi helped Metro Manila recover from Typhoon Ketsana of 2009, local residents have been keen to join the ranks of volunteers. All Tzu Chi volunteer training seminars are held in the local language, to help participants better understand Tzu Chi”s values that focus on making the world a better place.
在菲律賓,自從2009年凱莎娜颱風後,慈濟協助大馬尼拉打掃整理,帶動許多當地人加入志工的行列,所有慈濟的培訓課程都用菲律賓話,深入淺出讓居民了解慈濟的理念,也因為付出,當地志工了解人生可以健康,也更有作為。
2.杉林滯洪動土Detention pools for Shanlin
Helping typhoon survivors stand back up again, Tzu Chi built the Shanlin Da Ai permanent housing community in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with more than 1,000 houses for survivors of Typhoon Morakot in 2009. Recently, work has begun to add six more flood detention pools to the existing one, which together will be able to take around 30,000 tons of storm water. We now go to Shanlin for the groundbreaking ceremony for the detention basins.
慈濟在台灣幫忙颱風災民重新站起,在高雄蓋了有超過一千棟房屋的杉林大愛園區,讓莫拉克災民都能安身安心,最近在園區內將再增加六處滯洪池,讓前後七個滯洪池總蓄洪量達到三萬噸之外,現在將鏡頭帶到杉林,一起來看看滯洪池的動土儀式。

With the conviction that education is the best way to escape poverty, Tzu Chi awards New Shoots Scholarships to help disadvantaged students continue their schooling. Each student aid recipient has their own hardships and story, and today we introduce you to young Chen Junru(陳俊儒) in central Taiwan.
相信教育才是脫離貧困最好的方法,慈濟發出新芽獎學金,讓弱勢的學生能夠繼續接受教育,每一位受獎者背後都有令人心酸的故事,今天為您介紹中台灣陳俊儒的故事。
4.板橋新芽關懷Helping a family find a better life
From central to Northern Taiwan, we meet another family who has benefitted from Tzu Chi”s scholarships. Facing losses over a bad business deal, the He family has been working hard to pay back their debts, while their children study hard in school with Tzu Chi”s student aid. As the family strives to start anew, Tzu Chi volunteers are there every step of the way.
鏡頭從台灣中部轉到北部,慈濟的新芽獎學金也幫助了一家人渡過難關,何先生一家生意失敗,努力賺錢還債,孩子也因為慈濟的補助能夠上學,也認真求學,一家人齊心協力,要讓生活更好,一路上也都有慈濟人陪伴。
5.找一碗飯(一)Imported food crisis looming?
Twenty years ago, Taiwan grew 57 percent of its food. Now that figure has dropped to 32 percent - low by international standards. The set-aside policy, rising fuel prices, climate change, and other factors mean that Taiwan may soon be facing its own food crisis. In the first of a new series, we investigate the issues.
20年前,台灣糧食自給率是百分之57,現在 一路跌到百分32,跟世界各國的糧食自給率相比是偏低的,因為休耕政策影響、國際油價飆漲、氣候暖化,以及其他因素,台灣可能將面臨糧食短缺的危機,今天的的專題中,就帶各位一起去探討找一碗飯的議題。
6.印萬隆發白米Bandung volunteer training camp
In Indonesia, Tzu Chi”s Bandung liaison office recently held its first ever volunteer training camp. The attendants also went to the local slums to hand out rice to 4,500 families.
印尼萬隆聯絡處,首次舉辦藍衣志工的培訓,大家也一起前往萬隆的貧困區,發放給4500戶人家。
7.1019歷史的今天On this day, the 19th of October
1745 Gulliver”s Travels writer dies
Anglo-Irish satirist and political pamphleteer Jonathan Swift is known for his timeless classic, Gulliver”s Travels. The novel is a series of fantastical adventures that satirizes human nature. On this day in 1745, Swift passed away at the age of 78.
11973 TW”s 1st gangrene hospital
In the late 1950s, gangrene, or ”blackfoot disease”, was prevalent along the coastal areas of southwest Taiwan. Mrs. Lilian Dickson, the wife of a pastor at the Mustard Seed Mission, along with doctors Wang Jinhe(王金河) and Xie Wei(謝緯), organized free clinics for people with gangrene. As the number of patients grew, the trio set up Taiwan”s first hospital that specialized in treating gangrene.
2007 Peru quake relief
On August 15, 2007, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck the central coast of Peru. In the following month, Tzu Chi volunteers from Argentina and the United States arrived for a disaster survey. On this day of the same year, the first Tzu Chi disaster relief team, with help from Taiwanese business people in Peru, distributed mattresses, blankets, tarpaulins and other daily necessities to more than 2,000 quake survivors.
1745年格列佛遊記作者斯威夫特病逝,愛爾蘭政論家和諷刺小說家-約翰斯威夫特,著作格列佛遊記,既是冒險故事、奇幻小說,也是對人性的嘲諷,斯威夫特1745年這天過世,享年七十八歲。
1973年首座烏腳病醫院正式啟用,1950年代末期,台灣西南沿海地區烏腳病盛行,基督教芥菜種會的牧師娘-孫理蓮、王金河與謝緯醫師,免費醫治烏腳病患,由於病患人數增加,再增建台灣首座烏腳病醫院。
2007年祕魯大地震,慈濟賑災團出發,2007年八月15日,秘魯發生芮氏規模八的強烈地震,美國和阿根廷的慈濟志工九月份前往勘災之後,決定賑災方向,同年這天,首梯次的慈濟賑災團結合當地台商,在重災區致贈禦寒床墊、毛毯,以及防雨布等生活用品,提供兩千多位居民溫暖。
8.美人文饗宴Reaching Out from the Heart
In the United States, Tzu Chi”s annual charity concert ”Reaching Out from the Heart” was held last weekend at the Tzu Chi Headquarters in San Dimas, California. The theme this year was about repentance and self-improvement. Renowned Taiwanese singers Pan Lili and Wan Fang made a special trip to the US to perform.
慈濟美國總會一年一度的人文饗宴,上個周末在南加州聖迪馬斯登場,這次的主題是祥和社會從心開始,知名台灣的演藝人員潘麗麗和萬芳,特別來到美國獻上精彩的表演。
9.馬屠妖節回饋Aid relief for double festival
Recently, the Tzu Chi chapter in Kedah, Malaysia held an aid distribution for two festivals, Eid ul Fitr and Diwali, which are celebrated by the local Muslim and Indian communities respectively. Long-term care recipients were invited to the event to take home supplies for the holidays, as well as learn about the how and why of environmental protection through recycling.
慈濟馬來西亞分會,配合當地回教與印度教的開齋節和屠妖節,舉辦了雙佳節發放日,邀請長期的照顧戶來參加,送上物資,還讓照顧戶了解資源回收的重要。
