We continue our series of feature reports from Taiwan”s River Dajia, with a look at the pollution problem downstream. And a 64-year-old collector of figurines in Taiwan opens up this collection for his whole community to enjoy.

1. 曼拍鄉感恩會 Hot meals for flood victims
For the last two months, Thailand has been in the grips of massive flooding. During the crisis, volunteers from Tzu Chi have become a familiar sight for many local people. In Banplab Township, of Bang Pa In County, in Ayutthaya Province, volunteers gave flood victims hot meals, twice a day. They distributed 22,622 vegetarian meals in a week. As the program comes to a close, Tzu Chi will be launching a mid-term disaster relief plan. Volunteers also gave blankets, medical kits, and food as a token of their appreciation to 240 local people, who helped out during the hot meal distribution.
泰國這波水患已經兩個多月了，慈濟人的關注不曾消退，在大城府挽巴因縣曼拍鄉，慈濟志工開始做熱食供應，一天兩餐，一星期下來共發出22622個素食便當。緊急援助暫時告一段落，賑災工作要轉為中長期計畫，志工感謝當地志工的協助，也特別準備了毛毯、醫藥盒、食品，和240位村民結緣。
2. 新澤西發放 More aid for Irene victims
Tzu Chi volunteers in the US are helping residents in the Mid-West return their lives to normal, after their homes were battered by Hurricane Irene at the end of August. In New Jersey, where there was extensive damage, Tzu Chi volunteers continue to care for the storm victims. For example, in the Borough of Manville, in New Jersey”s Somerset County, more than 1,600 households were affected by the flood. With help from the mayor, Tzu Chi was able to compile a list of affected families, many of whom were forced to move away after they lost their homes. After considerable effort, volunteers finally got in touch with 54 householders, and invited them to claim their consolation cash.
八月底艾琳颶風重創美國中西部，慈濟人協助災民重建生活，新澤西受災尤其嚴重，志工持續關注，例如在新澤西桑莫塞郡的曼維爾鎮，因為颶風引起水災，超過一千六百戶受災，志工持續勘災，和市長、市府團隊了解災情，取得受災名單，但多數住戶因為家園無法居住，離家在外居住，也因此聯繫困難重重，志工花了許多心力，終於為五十四戶受災居民送上慰問金。

3. 明月映東松(二) Farmers of Higashimatsushima
Continuing our series on recovery efforts in northeast Japan, today we look at how farmers of Miyagi Prefecture”s Higashimatsushima are coping. The problem they face is: after the tsunami, salt from the seawater seeped into the ground. The longer a field is underwater, the worse the salinization is, rendering the land useless. Yet, passionate about their connection to the land, the farmers are finding ways to carry on.

4. 八十歲做志工 Life can be meaningful after 80
As Taiwan celebrated Double Ninth Festival yesterday, Tzu Chi invited three volunteers who are all over 80 years old, to share their tips to a healthy life. Among them, 82-year-old Qiu Chuanlai(邱傳來) began volunteering at Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital when he was 75, and does a 5-minute handstand everyday.
台灣昨天慶祝重陽節，慈濟基金會特別邀請三位超過八十歲的志工，分享他們人生的養生之道，其中82歲的邱傳來，從75歲開始到花蓮慈院做志工，每天更可以倒立五分鐘。

5. 大河劫大甲溪下(2) Water problems for R. Dajia farms
In today”s trip to the River Dajia, in central Taiwan, we find out why the main supply of water to the region is not good enough for local farmers. Problems with the water channel getting deeper, as we reported yesterday, and pollution from neighboring factories, mean that farmers are pumping ground water instead of drawing their supply from the river. In our continuing series of reports from the River Dajia, we find out more.

Polio vaccines reach Taiwan
After polio broke out in Taiwan in 1959, in 1962 the minister of the Department of Health at the time, Mr. Xu Ziqiu, introduced the vaccine to the country. In 1965, an inoculation program for all Taiwanese children was launched. Over a million polio shots from the United Nations arrived in Taiwan on this day in 1966. In the year 2000, the WHO announced that polio had been eradicated in Taiwan.
1973
Yom Kippur War starts
Led by Egyptian president Sudat, a coalition of Arab nations launched the Yom Kippur War on Israel, on this day in 1973. After the intervention of US president Carter, Egypt and Israel negotiated a peace treaty, which ended 30 years of conflict in the Middle East. Egyptian president Sudat and Israeli president Begin won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978.
1981
Pres. Sudat assassinated
At a military parade on this day in 1981, to celebrate Egypt”s crossing of the Suez Canal in the Yom Kippur War, President Sudat, the vice president and other officials were standing on the viewing platform when they were attacked by passing soldiers. Mortally wounded, Sadat was pronounced dead within hours. An investigation concluded that extremist fundamentalists had carried out the assignation.
1986
Air quality checks
In the 1970s, during Taiwan”s economic miracle the issue of environmentalism emerged, prompting the government to protect public health and safety, and implement air quality standards. A self monitoring system went online on this day in 1986, to keep checks on air quality.
1995
Back to TC roots
On this day in 1995, Master Cheng Yen took senior managers from Tzu Chi”s branch organizations to Luye, on the east coast of Taiwan, back to the place where she became a nun and started practicing Buddhism. Through the personal experience, the Master hoped the Tzu Chi Foundation could get back to its roots, and cherish and serve all living things.
1998
NASA reveals ozone hole
NASA released satellite images showing a hole in the ozone layer above the South Pole on this day in 1998. Measuring 26 million square kilometers in area, the hole was big enough to cover 700 Taiwans, and let ultraviolet rays from the sun hit the earth, seriously affecting the planet”s environment.
歷史的今天，十月六號。1966年，預防小兒痲痺，聯合國疫苗抵台。台灣在1959年爆發小兒痲痺大流行，1962年擔任台灣省衛生處長的許子秋，引進疫苗，1965年展開全台小兒痲痺預防接種計劃，由聯合國提供上百萬份沙賓疫苗，1966年這天抵達台灣。兩千年，世界衛生組織宣布，台灣根除小兒痲痺症。

Ms. Xia(夏) is a Tzu Chi care recipient, and a single mother of three, living in Changhua(彰化) County, Taiwan. Her family lives in an old three-sided courtyard building, and many of the rooms leaked when it rained. Already struggling financially, Ms. Xia had no money to repair her home. Luckily, Tzu Chi came to help.
住在台灣彰化縣的夏女士，是慈濟居家關懷戶，是位單親媽媽，育有三名子女，一家四口就住在簡陋的三合院，有好幾間房間都會漏水，生活已經很困苦，夏女士沒有多餘的錢可以整修，幸好慈濟志工前來幫忙。
8. 公仔結善緣 In touch with his inner child
Mr. Yao Rongsan(姚榮三) from Taiwan”s Changhua City likes to surround himself with figurines. But the avid collector has finally decided to let his grandchildren play with his toys; and, when his collection grew to over 10,000, the 64-year-old shared them with everyone in his neighborhood, by displaying them along the walls outside his house. People who show an interest in the figurines, often leave with a souvenir of their choice.
住在台灣彰化市六十四歲的姚榮三，很喜歡公仔，這些年收集了上萬個可愛公仔給孫子，多的家裡放不下，乾脆放到屋外讓路過民眾欣賞，與左鄰右舍分享，有人喜歡，也大方送出去。
