< A cancer back on his feet and giving >
< Carrying on their forefathers” legacy >
< Attempting to manipulate nature >
Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Dennis Wu. Thank you for joining us. In Indonesia, a cancer patient rediscovered hope after meeting Tzu Chi volunteers and is now volunteering to reciprocate. A fishing town in Higashimatsushima of Miyagi Prefecture aims to reclaim the title of the best seaweed maker of Japan. And, in today”s feature on Dajia River, we see that men can”t seem to learn from their lessons as people continue to manipulate nature with man-made structures.

Changing lives for the better

Tzu Chi volunteers around the globe carry out house calls on a regular basis, to bring care and love to the needy. Moving stories of how Tzu Chi”s help has changed lives motivate volunteers to continue their work. In North Jakarta, Indonesia, a care recipient, Omenius, who found out he had cancer six years ago, almost gave up on life. It was then that he came across Tzu Chi, and, with support from volunteers, Omenius recovered from his illness and is now volunteering at the local recycling station to reciprocate Tzu Chi”s love.

There are no shortcuts to spiritual cultivation; one must always be mindful.

Reviving the seaweed industry

Turning our attention to recovery efforts in northeast Japan, Higashimatsushima in Miyagi Prefecture used to be home to the best seaweed, or nori, in the country, winning first place in national competitions over the past six years. But, on March 11th, the whole seaweed industry was devastated by the tsunami triggered by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake. Not only were the processing plants and equipment destroyed, but many senior seaweed farmers lost their lives. Now their children are staying behind and carrying on.

Everyone can make a difference

In the United States, New Jersey”s Montgomery High School is doing its part for disaster relief in Japan. Chinese teacher Lv Fangxue(呂芳雪) started ”Wishing Star for Japan”, whereby students can customize a star with a personal message and donate a dollar. Together the stars formed a Japan flag and, along with the some 3,000 USD they collected, were delivered to the local Tzu Chi office to be passed on to the people of Japan.

Continuous love & care since 2008

Tzu Chi aid program is always long term. For example, in China”s Sichuan, volunteers continue to carry out Tzu Chi”s work since the 5/12 Earthquake in 2008. The 33rd care relief team has arrived in the province, to bring love and care to the disaster victims. Each volunteer here has set aside their work, family, and personal commitments to give what they can.

On Inspiring Wisdom
The Enlightened One, the Sakyamuni Buddha is not an idol for us to worship, but is someone to inspire our unlimited potential.
In another words, Tzu Chi”s philosophy is not about praying to the Buddha for blessings, but gaining and cultivating our wisdom.

(1) Man-made disasters on the R. Dajia

The River Dajia feeds central Taiwan with water. In the 1970s, the Deji Reservoir was created with the 220m tall Shigang Dam - the highest and biggest in the country at the time. One of the impacts of the dam is an erosion problem. The river is cutting deeper into the ground, exposing bridge supports and other structures. Experts are also worried that a proposed water channel, between the Dajia and Daan rivers, could lead to another disaster like the Xiaolin Village tragedy in 2009.

On this day. October 5

1969
Master visits fire scene
On Mid-Autumn festival in 1969 a fire started by a typhoon ripped though Danan大南 Village in east Taiwan. Master Cheng Yen went to the scene on this day. At the time, Tzu Chi was only three years old. Volunteers raised money for blankets, which were sent to residents on October 16. It was Tzu Chi”s first disaster relief effort. Years later, residents held on to their blankets as treasured possessions.

1985
Guandu Nature Reserve
Situated by the confluence of the Danshui and Jilong rivers, the Guandu plain is the only preserved wetland and habitat for migratory birds in Taiwan”s Taipei city. On this day in 1985, the Guandu Nature Reserve was officially established. Functioning as a center for conservation, education and research, in 2006 the reserve hosted the largest bird watching expo in Asia.

1996
Green Island
free clinic
A medical team put together by Dr. Chen Shenfa陳神發 from Taiwan”s Kaohsiung arrived on Green Island on this day in 1996, and starting seeing patients at 9 o”clock in the morning. Because many of the elderly islanders suffer from rheumatism, the Chinese medical practitioners were especially popular. A local store donated 100 items of clothing for Tzu Chi to sell for charity, becoming the first Tzu Chi member on Green Island.

2001
Shenmu villagers
help Da Ai TV
Residents of Shenmu village, in Taiwan”s Nantou county set out at 5 o”clock in the morning of this day in 2001 to help out at the flood-hit Da Ai TV station in Taipei. Because Tzu Chi had come to the aid of Shenmu after Typhoons Doug, Herb and Toraji, villagers sold vegetables for charity, and donated over 300,000 NT dollars to the stricken television station.

Honoring Taoyuan”s Tzu Chi volunteers

In Taoyuan, Taiwan, an exhibition was held at the local Jing Si Hall to honor Tzu Chi volunteers who helped further Tzu Chi”s missions. A peach tree made of paper featured 50 peaches symbolizing the 50 volunteers being honored. Some devoted themselves to recording life”s goodness, truth, and beauty, while some devoted themselves to recycling.

Bone marrow drive in northern Taiwan

In Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Hsinchu, to raise the hopes of patients in need of bone marrow transplant, Tzu Chi volunteers held donation drive. In spite of the heavy autumn rains caused by a nearby typhoon, the turn out was quite good at all locations.
