Walking out of sorrow & pain
In northeast Japan, more than 1,000 lives were lost in Higashimatsushima, of Miyagi Prefecture, when the tsunami, caused by a 9.0 magnitude tremor, struck on March 11th. Over 90 residents are still missing today. In the town of Omagari-hama, all 1,300 or so homes were swallowed by the ocean. More than 500 people died there alone. Today, we go back to the area, to see how survivors are coping with their grief, and embracing a new future.
Years-long commitment to recycling
80-year-old Wu Yuying(吳玉英) from Yanpu(鹽埔) in Pingtung, Taiwan, is known by locals as ”Grandma Planet” for her 18 years of commitment to recycling. Recently, due to old age and infirmity, she retired from her environmental work, and turned her focus to making tasty treats, and beverages, for recycling volunteers, at the local Jing Si Hall, and environmental station. Let”s meet Grandma Planet.

(3)Rice field contamination
With an annual rainfall of 2,500mm, Taiwan should be awash with water. Yet the country frequently suffers from water shortages. Due to Taiwan”s steep mountains and short rivers, together with its pollution problems, many areas lack a sufficient supply of clean water. Rural Houli, in central Taiwan, is a typical example. Although flanked by the Daan and Dajia Rivers, local farmers complain they do not have enough water for their crops. And recently, rice fields were found to be contaminated with heavy metals. In the latest in our series of features from the River Dajia, we go to Houli to investigate.
A change for the better
Next up, we introduce you to a special Tzu Chi volunteer, in Indonesia, by the name of Peng Fulai(彭福來). Now 53 years old, he says, before meeting Tzu Chi, his life was filled with alcohol and wild escapades. Things got so bad, that his wife thought about taking the children and leaving home. However, in 2007, all that changed. Let”s find out why.

A change of heart
