Fire relief in Raleigh

First up today, we take you to a fire relief effort in North Carolina of the United States. Twelve families were displaced after an electrical fire broke out in Raleigh, in the middle of the night. Working with the Red Cross, the local Tzu Chi office brought relief supplies and emergency cash to nine of the displaced families to tide them over.

Tzu Chi invited to Silverado fair

Staying in the United States, at the start of this year, Silverado in California”s Orange County was hit by torrential rain, which brought a landslide into people”s homes. For three consecutive months, Tzu Chi volunteers helped the residents clean up, making close friends in the process. So for Silverado”s 41st annual parade, the town invited Tzu Chi to take part.

The blissful state of mind that comes from selfless giving is the Pure Land.

New home for troubled family

In Selangor, Malaysia, Tzu Chi care recipient Chen Wencai(陳文財) supports his mentally retarded wife and son on meager income. Three years ago, after being evicted from their rented place, the family moved into a rundown home provided by a kindhearted person. But with the house on the verge of collapse, Tzu Chi volunteers stepped in to move the family to a new property.

Delivering love to Tuban Village

Tuban Village of Taitung”s Daren (達仁) Townshipis an indigenous settlement. As able adults tend to move to the cities to find work, the old and young are left behind. Tzu Chi volunteers recently brought medical equipment for the local health center and delivered supplies to low income families.

Kind officer helps kinder grandma

Next, we have another story of love, this time from Zhonghe in New Taipei City. For the past three years, traffic policeman Wang Junzhi(王俊智) has been helping an 83-year-old scavenging woman cross a busy intersection several times a day. The senior was actually quite well off, and recycles only as a way of helping the poor.

Living with TTP

A nurse at the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital suffers from a rare and life-threatening blood coagulation disorder. Despite her condition, she continues to serve with passion, and hopes to share her story with others suffering the same fate.

Tzu Shaos clean up Jing Si store

The Xinwutai(新舞台) Jing Si Books and Cafe store in Taipei opened in 2002. Approaching its tenth anniversary, the store was recently visited by a team of Tzu Shaos from the Yonghe district of New Taipei City, who came to tidy the place up.

Good for nothing children?

There are children who willingly help, but there are also those who shirk their housekeeping duties. According to statistics, one out of every four Taiwanese children do not do household chores. In our next story, we have some tips on how to teach kids to do the housework.

Recycling for problem Hualien youths

Over 30 youths on probation were led by Tzu Chi volunteers on a day of recycling at the Hualien recycling station. Let”s see how the trip has inspired the young visitors.

On this day, the 17th of October

1968 Literary giant Kawabata
Japanese writer Yasunari Kawabata”s exceptional talent at vivid descriptions and lyrical prose won him the 1968 Nobel Prize for Literature. He was the first Japanese author to receive the distinction. His most famous works include The Dancing Girl of Izu, Snow Country, and The Old Capital.

1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake
On this day in 1989, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area, in the United States, during the 5PM rush hour. The tremor lasted for 10-15 seconds, causing 63 deaths. Local Tzu Chi volunteers not only solicited donations of clothes and cash to help the families of the deceased, but also worked with the Red Cross for the rescue and recovery work.

1993 Eradicating poverty
In 1992, the United Nations designated October 17th as the International Day for Eradicating Poverty, which was first observed in 1993. The day serves to raise awareness of the issue of how the widening wealth gap affects development worldwide. One of the UN”s Millennium Goals is to halve the number of people living in extreme poverty by 2015.

2010 Spreading love in Holland
On this day in 2010, Tzu Chi volunteers in Holland held a ”Spread the Seeds of Love” gathering in Rotterdam. The program included personal testimonies about voluntary service, Jing Si aphorism readings, and a sign language song lesson, to share with the attendants Tzu Chi”s spirit of humanity.

Empowering the poor

The Kingdom of Lesotho is a country entirely landlocked by South Africa. With very little arable soil, Lesotho relies heavily on food imports; and when a dry spell hits, the poorer parts of the country run the risk of famine. Concerned about food shortages, Taiwanese businessmen in Lesotho decided to come together as volunteers and help. On October 16, 1995, the Tzu Chi-Lesotho liaison office came into being. The need to promote compassion and love was particularly pertinent after the 1991 and 1998 Lesotho uprisings.
