Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Anthony Carlisle. Thank you for joining us. Coming up in today”s show, following the battering by Typhoon Nesat, volunteers in the Philippines deliver aid to victims of the storm. We wind up our series of reports on outstanding Taiwanese teachers, who have a deep effect on the lives of their pupils, introducing you to an award-winning educator from Keelung. And in our continuing series of features from Taiwan”s River Dajia, we look at the potential disaster waiting to happen, behind the waterway”s clogged-up dams.

1. 菲水患送餐 Relief after Typhoon Nesat

After Typhoon Nesat pummeled the Philippines, the local Tzu Chi chapter mobilized volunteers to provide relief for the hard-hit town of Cainta, in Rizal Province. Volunteers started distributing relief supplies. They also worked in other flooded areas, delivering aid to victims of the storm who were sheltering in a school auditorium in the Tondo district of Manila, and contacting the local authorities to discuss further aid programs. Since flood waters have receded, most residents have returned home and are cleaning up.

尼莎颱風重創菲律賓，菲律賓慈濟人持續動員，到黎剎省的加茵沓鎮，志工們展開發放工作，同時也到其他災區，將物資送達馬尼拉敦洛區的學校，變成避難中心的禮堂，自從水退了之後，大多數的居民已經回家，開始清理家園。

2. 老師謝謝你(4)余建榮 Modest teacher changes students” lives

Yu Jianrong is a teacher at Nanrong Junior High school in the mountains of Taiwan”s Keelung City area. Many of his students are from single-parent families, or are looked after by their grandparents. In his 11 years of service, teacher Yu has helped raise funds for poor families, provided free tutuoring for disadvantaged children, and frequently takes his students volunteering in the community. This year, he was the only educator in the city to win a Teaching Award from the Ministry of Education.

余建榮是基隆市學校位於山區南榮國中的數學老師，當地有不少的單親和隔代教養學生，11年的教學路，為弱勢家庭募款，協助度過難關，還陪伴著學生，到社區進行志工服務，老師今年成為全基隆唯一師鐸獎得主。


3. 感念師恩(4)林佳達 Patient teacher

There can be a special bond between teachers and students. When senior Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital doctor, Xie Zhengxing(謝政興), needed surgery, he chose an old student, and now colleague, Dr. Lin Jiada(林佳達) to perform the operation. Dr. Lin said he was grateful for yet another learning opportunity, and humbled by the trust his teacher put in him.

師生之間可有深厚的感情，當台北慈濟醫院醫師謝政興需要開刀時，他找了以前的學生、現在的同事，林佳達醫師替自己拔除病苦，林醫師說，他很感恩能夠有學習的機會，對於老師給予的信任也相當謙虛。


4. 武漢灰衣受袍 Tzu Chi Wuhan retreat turns 1

Tzu Chi”s Wuhan retreat in Hubei, China, recently marked the first full year since it was opened. To celebrate its birthday, 14 trainee volunteers, who just completed their training, came to be awarded their volunteer uniforms. Let”s go to Wuhan to join the fun.

中國湖北的武漢的慈濟共修處成立滿一年，這一次有14位位志工接受灰衣志工受袍，一起前往武漢分享他們的喜悅。


5. 斯國灰衣受袍 10 newly certified volunteers

Joining the 22 trainee volunteers in China, are ten newly certified volunteers in Sri Lanka. Seven years after the tsunami in 2004, Tzu Chi”s disaster relief work in the South Asian country continues to inspire local residents to join the ranks of the volunteers. We went to the ceremony in Hambantota, to see the new recruits get their gray uniforms.

跟著中國22位志工的腳步還有10位斯里蘭卡的志工，2004年海嘯已經過了七年了，慈濟在災區國家的付出，深深感動當地居民承擔志工，我們一起參與漢班托塔的聯誼會，來看看志工們領到灰衣制服。

If we are to learn how to do good deeds, we must be determined to be charitable and hardworking. However, humans are always lazy. So we must compete against ourselves.

6. 大河劫大甲溪(4) Great barrier grief on River Dajia

Central Taiwan was rocked by the September 21 earthquake of 1999, and then pounded by Typhoons Toraji in 2001 and Mindulle in 2004. The combined effect of the disasters poured tons of earth and rocks into the Dajia River, sweeping away the central cross island highway in the process. In some places, the riverbed is 20m higher than it used to be. The Taiwanese government has poured millions into clearing the debris, but the Dajia riverbed is still 10m above its natural level. Apart from increasing the likelihood of more flooding and landslides, the dams and barriers upstream are also at risk. Experts are concerned that another major storm could burst the dams, leading a catastrophic disaster. Since the river”s silt barriers were filled up to the top only one or two years after they were built, environmentalists are questioning the wisdom of building structures on the river, and farming on the slopes around the Dajia valley.

中台灣歷經921地震、2001的桃芝颱風、2004年敏督利造成的七二水災，大甲溪上游土石大量崩塌沖刷到河川，沖斷了中橫公路，也讓大甲溪的河床總共增高了將近20公尺高，政府花了好幾億的經費清淤，不過現在大甲溪中下游的河床還是增高了10公尺，除了增加水患和土石流之外，另一個隱憂是大甲溪上游水壩和攔砂壩的興建，專家說，相當多的水壩和攔砂壩是造成災難發生的隱憂，攔砂壩一般在興建後的1到2年就會被砂石淤滿，萬一不堪負荷破裂倒塌，就會更加重大甲溪下游的災難。

At the defeat of Nazi Germany after World War II, the country was split into two in 1945. 45 years later, after the first democratic election in East Germany, talk of reunification with West Germany began and was realized on this day in 1990, helping bring Eastern and Western Europe together.

1999
Post 9/21 blessings
To help comfort residents in central Taiwan who had survived the 9/21 earthquake, on this day in 1999, the Tzu Chi Foundation began holding what would be a total of 14 blessing ceremonies, the first being held in Zhongxing New Village in Nantou County. Through participating, quake survivors were given hope again.

2005
Lin Hwai-min recognized
TIME magazine”s Asia edition named Lin Hwai-min, the founder of the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, one of Asia”s Heroes on this day in 2005. The article said Lin was the most significant choreographer in Asia. His contagious dances are full of life.

1990年，東西德統一，聯邦共和國。1945年德國在二次大戰後被分裂為東德與西德，45年後，東德舉行史上第一次民選，隨後與西德展開統一談判，在1990年的這天正式合併，為歐洲東西部的一體化邁出關鍵的一步。

1999年，九二一祈福會，首場中興新村。為了安撫在1999年921地震中中部受災鄉親，慈濟基金會從童年的這天起舉辦用愛心建家園祈福晚會，總計十四場，首場在南投中興新村，讓鄉親感受未來的希望。

2005年，林懷民創新舞蹈，獲選亞洲英雄。美國時代雜誌亞洲英雄人物，這天選出雲門舞集創辦人林懷民，將他譽為是亞洲最重要的編舞家，舞蹈創作充滿生命力與感染力。


8. 傳愛天使表揚 Social workers recognized

Last Thursday, Taiwan”s hardworking social workers were recognized in a ceremony, attended by Taiwan”s president, Ma Yingjiu. In a show of support, the deputy CEO of the Tzu Chi Foundation, Lin Biyu, also presented tablet computers to the award-winners.

上個禮拜四，台灣三千多位社工得到表揚，表揚大會有總統馬英九親自參加，慈濟基金會副總執行長林碧玉代表慈濟，捐贈平板電腦給這些社工，鼓勵每一位為社會弱勢付出的人。


9. 家電診所 First ”home appliances clinic”

Most people throw away their hair dryers, electric fans and other small home appliances when they break down. According to Taiwan”s Environmental Protection Administration, the amount of home appliances recycled in 2009, totaled nearly 100,000 tons. To promote environmentalism, Taichung”s Environmental Protection Bureau has established the island”s first ”Home Appliances Clinic,” to repair small electronic gadgets for residents free of charge. The clinic not only extends the life of these appliances, but also promote employment opportunities for people in need.

大多數的人在吹風機、電扇等這些小型家電故障後，就會直接選擇丟棄，根據環保署統計，2009年總回收處理量將近十萬公噸。為了提倡資源再利用的觀念，台中市環保局成立全台第一座家電診所，免費為民眾維修小家電，家電診所的誕生，不只賦予家電新生命，也讓需要工作的人有了謀生機會。

To help Alzheimer”s” sufferers recover their memories, students at the Nankai University of Technology in Taiwan have come up with a series of old-fashioned games to take elderly patients back to their youths.
