Our first report takes us to Bolivia, where incidents of heavy rain in March left many places inundated, like Isoso, an indigenous community more than 300 km from the city of Santa Cruz. As the roads leading to the disaster-hit area were cut off in many places, volunteers took more than eight hours to reach the village, where around 320 flood-affected families were in need of aid. The volunteers handed out a total of 12 tons of relief supplies, giving the deprived villagers essential assistance.

Staying on the topic of aid relief, but moving to the United States, the city of West Liberty, in Morgan County, Kentucky, was, on March 2, badly hit by a tornado. After carrying out a disaster assessment, Tzu Chi volunteers from four states, returned to organize a distribution of cash cards, blankets, daily necessities, and bamboo banks for 82 households.

On Wednesday, April 4th, the people of Taiwan observed Tomb Sweeping Day, by gathering with family members to honor their ancestors and departed loved ones with offerings, which often involves the burning of incense and paper money. Earlier this year, in January, Zhenai (臻愛) Cemetery opened in Taipei”s Yangming Mountain, giving people a different, and greener choice to commemorate the day. At Zhenai, no paper money or incense is used, and the cemetery building stands by its eco-friendly goal by installing a natural ventilation system instead of air conditioning.

If one works only to make a living, life is not satisfying. Live for our work. This is the true value of life.

In Bangkok, Thailand, the community of Sit Luang Pu Kao recently had a recycling day. Many local residents, old and young, came early in the morning with their paper and plastic, as well as filled-up bamboo coin banks. This time the money collected came to a total of 3,829 Thai baht - or 123 US dollars, an amount the donors would like to contribute to support students in need.

On the topic of the New Shoots scholarships, in Malaysia, Tzu Chi started supporting Chinese-Malaysian children, from low-income families, in 1997. Previously, volunteers would mail schools information about the scholarships, or personally call on the schools, to meet the aid recipients and give them encouragements. This year, Tzu Chi held its first ever public briefing session on the program. Principals and teachers from schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur attended, to learn about Tzu Chi, and the opportunities for non-Chinese language schools.

Recently, a team of five Tzu Chi volunteers from Taiwan, who specialize in organic farming, were invited by the chairperson of Indonesia”s National Federation of Rural Cooperatives to his home country to visit some of the local farms that have been implementing natural farming techniques. The exchange has given Indonesia”s agricultural authorities new ideas for improving the livelihood of local farmers.

《 衲履足跡 》On a Pure Heart 談清淨心

An undisciplined thought may lead to the accumulation of negative karma.

Repentance is the best vitamin for our hearts, as it helps purify our soul and spirit whenever there is a need.

In today”s feature on Taiwan”s sunset industries, we meet the last master ink maker in the country. Pressure from cheap Chinese imports means there is only one local ink-maker left - he is Mr. Chen Jiade (陳嘉德). Unable to compete in the student market, these days, Mr. Chen makes top-quality ink blocks, using only the best raw materials. But the work is still hot and hard on the hands. Mr. Chen says he wants to pass his skills down to his son, so that the tradition of ink making can continue to leave its mark in Taiwan.

Staying in Taiwan, Tzu Chi volunteers from China”s Beijing, and Hebei and Shandong provinces visited the Jing Si Hall in Zhonghe and the Tzu Chi Chapter in Banqiao. The visitors hope, through the exchange of ideas with their Taiwanese counterparts they can help spread Tzu Chi”s wisdom and spirit further when they return home.

120 teachers from Tzu Chi Academies in LA, Irvine, San Dimas and Las Vegas in the United States came together for their annual training seminar. Apart from sharing their teaching experiences, the educators also hoped to cultivate themselves spiritually. But before that, we join the director of the Tzu Chi USA Headquarters, Huang Hankui(黃漢魁), on his trip to the Dallas Tzu Chi Chapter as a speaker at a one-day retreat.

Finally today, we”re back in Taiwan for the first ever fire drill at the Luzhou Jing Si Hall, where volunteers carried out the procedures with expert instructions from firefighters. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.
