Still in Taipei Tzu Chi General Hospital, next up, we meet nurse Chen Yijun, who not only loves her job, but treats it as a part of her life. She has been through leukemia, and says, her illness taught her, to better understand her patients” needs. Now fully recovered, during her time off, she still goes around the hospital wards, to encourage her patients.

In northern Taiwan, members of Tzu Chi”s International Medical Association, or TIMA, regularly visit a nursing home, in Ruifang, to check on the residents. Most of the seniors suffered strokes, at some point in their lives, and have mobility problems. TIMA doctors and volunteers are teaching them how to rehabilitate themselves, so they may, one day, be able to walk again.

Staying on the topic of medicine, we have news of a possible breakthrough in cancer research, as doctors at Taipei Veterans Hospital have discovered that the antioxidant ”resveratrol”, which is commonly found in grapes and nuts, could help control cancer stem cells.

If we pursue our profession with a sense of mission, we will find both joy and meaning in life.

Elevators were widely introduced to the world, after the industrial revolution, in the 19th century. In Taiwan, the elevator, or lift, wasn”t seen until around 80 years ago. In the first of a new series, on the elevator, we take you to Tainan, to see one of the earliest models in Taiwan.

We”ll find out more about how elevators changed the way we live tomorrow. But back to today, and for our next report, we travel to Hualien, to meet organic farmer, Mr. Wu Shuiyun吳水雲. As well as using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides, Mr. Wu also avoids machinery. He says working by hand helps him keep his costs low, and yet, he still comes up with yields, that are 80 percent, or even on a par, with most commercial farms.

We must form good affinities  with others, and plant good seeds : otherwise we will not be able to insire people to walk the bodhisattive path.

We will also lack the power to cange the world. But if we are unwilling to see suffering, we can all vow to make a difference.

In today”s look at Taiwan”s fading trades, we meet master tailor, Mr. Xu Jindi, who still makes suits the same way as his grandfather did. Although his business has suffered, against competition from off-the-rack suits, Mr. Xu says, there is still a market for tailor-made quality.

From handmade suits, to do-it-yourself car maintenance: When it comes to minor body work, dents, scratches and chips, car-wash owner Chen Hongsheng(陳汯聖), from Taichung in central Taiwan, has some tips, on how to touch up your car, in an easy way, which won”t cost you a fortune.
