Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Leeway Tsai. Thank you for joining us. Coming up in the show today, more than 400 disadvantaged students in Heping county, in China”s Guangdong Province, received scholarship awards from Tzu Chi. In Thailands”s Nakhon Sawan, community volunteers, who are mostly medical personnel, sharpen their caregiving skills in Tzu Chi”s four-day volunteer seminar. And later, in our series of features on Taiwan”s sunset trades, today we look at the business of engraving seals, and meet a craftswoman who still insists on engraving by hand, to give the chops a unique touch.

To kick off the show, Tzu Chi volunteers in China”s Guangdong Province traveled to Heping County, to visit students in Yangming(陽明) and Fuhe(福和) Middle Schools, and hand out scholarship funds. A total of 427 students not only received tuition support, but also learned about the importance of conservation work, and what it means to ”eat 80 percent full, and leave 20 percent to help the poor”.

n Thailand, Tzu Chi recently held its 8th community volunteer training program. This time around, many of the participants came from a nearby hospital in Nakhon Sawan. To accommodate attendants” needs and interests, volunteers emphasized the medical aspects of Tzu Chi”s mission during the 4-day training. Among those attending was the chief of Ratchaburi Department of Public Health, Dr. Chow Boon Liong, who was certified as a Tzu Chi commissioner last year. Dr. Chow was here again this year to do his part in encouraging trainees to do their best in helping further Tzu Chi”s cause in Thailand.

Moving to South Africa, recently, in Durban, a seminar was held for 350 local volunteers from all over KwaZulu Natal Province. Some of the attendants live more than 200km away, and spent hours on the road for the much-awaited gathering. The trip was rather painstaking for many, as there were riots near the venue the night before, forcing volunteers to travel extra miles to avoid harm and get to the seminar. Nevertheless, everyone made an effort to arrive on time. At the end of the workshop, three local volunteers who couldn”t travel to Taiwan at the end of last year to be certified as commissioners were inducted in a solemn ceremony.

The next story takes us to Indonesia, where the real estate company Summarecon launched a Jing Si aphorisms contest. 56 employees were challenged to learn 90 Jing Si aphorisms off by heart, with the grand prize being a trip to Taiwan to meet Master Cheng Yen.

Life may be long or short, but virtuous deeds carried out with genuine sincerity create beautiful melodies of life.

Life may indeed be short, and one of the most painful experiences is losing a loved one. 73-year-old Mr. Ye Jincai from Serendah Town in Selangor, Malaysia, lost his wife recently. However, he hasn”t let his sorrow get the better of him, but has instead thrown himself into collecting recyclables for Tzu Chi, even getting his daughter to join him in the work. The senior”s devotion to the environment has given him a new purpose of life, because what he does may be little, but every bit helps when it comes to saving the planet.

In Taiwan, Zhang Yuanchun (張媛淳), a 4th year nursing student at Hungkuang (弘光) University was born with a cleft lip. Four years ago, after getting a corrective surgery on her lip, she not only gained more self-confidence, but also vowed to help others just like her. Sadly, on March 19th, on her way home from class, Yuanchun got into a car accident and lost her life. During her memorial service, her school presented her parents with a graduation certificate. The family later decided to donate the funeral gift money to the Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation, and promised to become volunteers to fulfilled Yuanchun”s dream.

On the Power of Goodness

Tzu Chi”s work is not propagated by monetary gains but by volunteers” efforts. As long as there is a will, all can be achieved. The simple thought of helping those in need is the source of a powerful force of goodness.

In Taiwan, a chop or seal, engraved with your name, which you use to stamp official documents, is the equivalent to your signature. You must have a chop to open a bank account, change your address, get married, and so on. Official seal chops were once all engraved by hand, but these days everything is done by computer. In today”s double features on Taiwan”s fading industries, we meet a brother and sister pair in Taichung, who are among the few people on the island who can still carve a chop by hand. The sister, who is the master engraver, says she sees all Chinese character in reverse. Let”s find out why.

Traditional chop-makers may be fighting a losing battle against computers, but the brother and sister pair, whom you saw in our last story, are sticking to the good old ways, at their store in Taichung City. Following in their father”s footsteps, the younger sister engraves the seals, while the older brother runs the shop. Let”s find out how they added some creativity to their traditional skills, to keep the family store in business.

In Taoyuan, Taiwan, 132 taxi drivers got Jing Si aphorisms as bumper stickers as part of Tzu Chi”s campaign, ”Words of wisdom on wheels”. We”ll leave you with these images. Thank you for watching Da Ai Headlines. Goodbye.
