Coming up in today’s top stories, the Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital celebrates its success in providing 900 cases of radiosurgery over the last decade. In the battle against drug abuse, we learn why Taiwan’s government now sends drug addicts to rehabilitation centers instead of the prison. And, in our continuing report on energy resources in Taiwan, we explore the potential of solar energy and the barriers in promoting such energy.

1. 加馬刀900例

We kick off today’s program in Taiwan; the Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital began using Gamma Knife Radiosurgery to treat brain tumor patients in October, 2003. Over the past decade, the medical team has helped over 900 patients from all around the island. The director of the Neurosurgery Department, Dr. Su Quanfa(蘇泉發), recently shared his clinical experience and will also be taking part in this year’s international conference on neuro-oncology.

節目的一開始來到台灣，花蓮慈濟醫院自2003年10月引進加馬刀立體定位放射手術，邁入第十年，治療與研究團隊至今計超過900例個案，病患遍及臺灣及海外各地。慈院神經外科主任蘇泉發分享臨床經驗和研究成果，也參與今年的國際神經腫瘤學會，與更多人分享 。


2. 鼻竇炎治療

Those who suffer from a blocked nose, post-nasal drip and have difficulty in breathing for long periods of time, might be suffering from a condition known as chronic hyper-plastic sinusitis. In Taiwan’s New Taipei City, 57-year-old Mr. Deng(鄧) suffered from such a condition, however, he was afraid that a surgery would not resolve his problem. Let’s take a look.

有長期鼻塞、鼻涕倒流，甚至呼吸困難的民眾，很有可能罹患了慢性鼻竇炎合併鼻瘜肉。新北市一名57歲的鄧先生，就是罹患這樣的症狀，卻害怕手術無法解決他的問題，讓我們一起來看看。


3. 海外茶花道班
Staying in Taiwan’s New Taipei City, Tzu Chi Sanchong Grounds held a four-day tea ceremony and floral arrangement class. Over 300 participants from 14 countries worldwide gathered to learn about the beauty of the tea, flower and Tzu Chi’s humanistic spirit.

台灣新北市三重園區，舉辦四天的茶花道研習課程，來自14個國家，將近三百位學員，一起體驗茶香、花香、人文香。


4. 馬人文學校交流

40 teachers from Malaysia’s Tzu Chi academies, recently went on an exchange to Hualien Tzu Chi College of Technology in Taiwan. The one-week seminar will help these educators, learn to pass on humanitarian spirit to their students back home, through personal experiences and fun interactions.

馬來西亞慈濟人文學校40位老師一起來到台灣花蓮慈濟技術學院交流，為期一個禮拜的教師輔導暨人文營，老師們透過實際體驗和互動，要將學習到的經驗帶回馬來西亞運用。

5. 新聞時光機--處罰犯罪
Battling drug abuse is a problem in many countries including Taiwan. In the past, violators were treated like drug traffickers and thrown into prison. However, this did nothing to help them fight their addiction. Things only improved when the government realized the need, to treat addicts like patients and sent them to rehabilitation centers. We now learn about battling drug addiction and how we can help.

毒品濫用一直是許多國家的社會問題，包括台灣，之前吸毒者當成煙毒犯，以重罰嚇阻犯罪，但是卻對抑止他們毒癮毫無幫助，直到政府決定把吸毒者當作病患，把他們送到勒戒所戒毒才有改善。接下來，一起來了解毒品濫用的問題，以及我們如何可以盡一分力。


6. 反毒緝毒分享

As June 3rd is Taiwan’s Opium Suppression Day, the Ministry of Justice hopes to keep citizens from drugs, through promoting services of an anti-drug campaign. Promotional events were held near Ximending(西門町) in Taipei, as teenagers are the primary target. Through spreading this message, hopefully a cleaner and drug-free environment will return.

6月3號就是禁菸節，法務部希望透過一系列活動，讓民眾遠離毒品，活動聚集在熱鬧的西門町，因為青少年是主要目標，透過這些活動，希望還給社會乾淨無毒的空間。

Using a pious heart to repent for past mistakes is not only a genuine form of learning, but also a purification of one’s character. However, repentance is not just a moment’s thought, but requires ceaseless use of the dharma to cleanse the stains in our hearts. In this way, we can eliminate the three poisons of greed, anger, and ignorance.

開示：能以虔誠之心在人前懺悔過錯，是真誠的教育，也是人性的洗滌；懺悔不只是一時的悔過，要不斷地引法水洗淨內心的煩惱染著，才不會讓貪、瞋、痴 障礙道業。


7. 電力知多少(4)太陽能不能

To help with increasing energy costs and escalating demand, Taiwan’s government has been working, to raise the percentage of energy derived from re-newable resources, from its current 3.9 to 9 percent. Along those lines, the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Energy Bureau, has been promoting the installation of solar panels in both the public and private sectors. In our next report, we take a look at the potential of this re-newable energy source, and the barriers currently preventing more Taiwanese from embracing it.

為因應高漲的能源成本和需求，政府預計調高台灣再生能源發電的比例，從目前的百分之3.9增加到百分之9，經濟部能源局也在公私部門推動屋頂太陽能發電，雖然公家機關的太陽能使用率有所提升，但在多雨的北部和私人公司，使用的比例還是不高。接下來的報導中，和您一起探討再生能源的潛力，以及台灣所面臨的考驗。


8. 居關戶贈家具

Also in Taiwan, in Taipei, we meet a family of four who lives in a crude house. As the family relies on government subsidies and does odd jobs, they have no extra money to purchase furniture. Upon learning of their difficulties, Tzu Chi volunteers arrived at their home with donated second-hand furniture. Here’s more.

在台灣台北有一戶家庭，住在簡陋的房子，經濟來源靠政府補助和打零工，才得以維生，沒錢買家具，慈濟志工得知消息後，將二手家具送到居關戶的家中，讓我們來看看。


9. 陪讀媽媽

In our final report, we meet mighty mom Gao Jinxuan(高金玄). Gao(高)’s son Huang Chuanyu(黃傳育) suffers from cerebral palsy, and studies at the National Hemei(和美) Experimental School. To better care for her son, for the past three years, the two have lived together in the school’s dormitory. Every day, after settling Chuanyu(傳育) for class, Gao will assist other students with special needs on the school campus.

下一則新聞，我們來認識偉大的媽媽高金玄。高金玄的兒子黃傳育是個腦性麻痺患者，就讀彰化和美實驗學校，她的媽媽為了就近照顧，這三年來跟著孩子住在學校宿舍，每天安頓好傳育後，她就會去照顧學校其他特教孩子。

We end today’s program in China, in Quanzhou(泉州), Fujian(福建) Province, 47-year-old Huang Shanhu(黃珊瑚) was paralysed from the waist down after a work injury, and has not had a bath for the past 16 years. Upon learning of her plight, Tzu Chi volunteers began regularly visiting the woman, and gave her house a make over as well as a long awaited hot bath. We will leave you with these images.
