After the Haiti Earthquake in 2010, Tzu Chi volunteers have continued their love and care for the local residents. Tzu Chi has not only established a farm to plant Mo-rin-ga but also has been helping rebuild schools. In Haiti, on October 26th, Tzu Chi volunteers held a groundbreaking ceremony of the opening of the Centre Prescolaire Carmen Rene Durocher, a kindergarten that was severely damaged after the earthquake. Since Haiti was also affected by Hurricane Sandy, the groundbreaking ceremony was conducted indoors.

New Shoots Scholarship recipients
As we continue to feature stories on New Shoots Scholarship recipients, we go to Taoyuan(桃園), Keelung(基隆) and Kaohsiung(高雄), to meet a few individuals who are bravely facing diversity. Whether it is being filial towards their parents, or overcoming mental challenges to complete everyday tasks, every one of these stories deserves our applause.
Volunteers Return to the spiritual home
On October 27th, more than 30 senior Tzu Chi volunteers return to the Jing Si Abode in Hualien,Taiwan to share their experiences of working in Tzu Chi. Master Cheng Yen also took the chance to express her gratitude towards the volunteers and encouraged them to continue the good work.
Shanying Tzu Chi market
Also in Taiwan, recently the Shanying(山鶯) Tzu Chi market was established. The market was once a factory that belonged to volunteer Huang Chongxun(黃崇訓), who came from Guandong(廣東)’s Shantou(汕頭) City. Since Huang(黃) and his wife live in China all year round, they decided to donate the place to Tzu Chi. Here’s more.

(5) Underweight women a norm
Over the past few days in our series on Taiwan’s growing weight problem, we have shown viewers the dangers and frustrations that go with being overweight. However, there is another group in Taiwan that is equally at risk as those overweight. Among women 20 to 29, one out of every four is under-weight defined as having a BMI of under 18, those underweight usually don’t exercise and use a strict control of food intake to reach their weight loss goals. This extreme approach, however, weakens the body and can lead to health problems later in life.
The best way to lose weight
Do you want to lose weight? Do you know how to lose weight? Some think that weight training doesn’t fit into a weight loss regime; others think that after swimming, if you eat, all the calories will be absorbed and the time spent swimming will have gone to waste. Today we find out that weight training is one of the best ways to slim down, and after swimming, it’s ok to eat.

Syria has been in conflict since March of 2011. To date, a quarter of a million Syrian re-fugees fled their homes, with 70,000 of them now in Jordon. Tzu Chi volunteers are preparing for the upcoming winter aid distribution in Jordan, which will include second-hand clothes donated by residents from Taiwan. Let”s take a look.

In Indonesia, for the local residents of a nearby village in Ban-dung, to get to the city, the fast-est way is to cross a bridge. In 2009, the bridge was destroyed by floods, and was never rebuilt thus causing a great deal of inconvenience for local residents. This year, Tzu Chi volunteers joined efforts with the military, in the re-construction of a new bridge for the local residents.
Malaysian Tzu Chi volunteer Chen Jiayi(陳嘉義) sustained serious injury to his left eye, after which he flew to Taiwan, to see doctors at the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital for treatment. Despite the late hour, as soon as he arrived in Taiwan, Mr. Chen was sent to surgery, and thanks to the teamwork of volunteers and medical staff, his left-eye was saved.

Back in 2011, when Australia was severely affected by the floods, Tzu Chi volunteers conducted large-scale aid distributions in the City of Ip-swich. After the floods, the affinity between Tzu Chi and the citizens continued, as the mayor of Ip-swich invited the volunteers to promote recycling and vegetarianism. On October 17th, the mayor paid his very first visit to Taiwan, to learn more about Tzu Chi.
Moving to Malaysia, teachers at the Nibong Tebal Tzu Chi Kindergarten, taught students how to make eco-friendly musical instruments with recyclables. Later the students performed in an education center for challenged children. Besides the performance, students also gave their toys to the children and celebrated birthdays with them.
On Tolerance
Without a tolerant heart it is impossible to take on Tzu Chi”s cause. When working with people who share the same vision, be tolerant, honest and determined to ensure smooth cooperation.
The traditional method of paper making has been slowly disappearing. In the past, Nantou(南投)”s Puli(埔里) had over 40 paper making factories; however, today, there are only 6 left. To preserve this slice of culture, one paper production owner, Huang Huanzhang(黃煥彰), decided to turn his factory into a tourist attraction. In today”s feature reports on Taiwan”s sunset trade, we visit Puli(埔里) to see how paper is still being made in the traditional way.

Continuing with our reports on the winners of this year”s Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award, today we take a look at the story of Bu-la-rui-yang (布拉瑞揚) who was inspired by the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and decided to devote the rest of his life to dance. At first his decision was not supported by his family, but luckily, under the guidance of the founder of the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Lin Huaimi(林懷民), Bu-la-rui-yang(布拉瑞揚) has become a well known choreographer. He hopes to return to his village, and inspire the children there, to have the courage to follow their dreams.

Torrential rains and typhoons ravaged the Philippines this summer. Many of Tzu Chi”s Filipino volunteers were among those affected by the disaster, but selflessly, these volunteers sought to help others first. Arriving in Marikina City, Tzu Chi volunteers visited the affected Filipino volunteers, and hope to help them reconstruct their homes in the future.
In Taiwan, Buddhist Master Zhen Hua(真華) passed away peacefully on October 5th, at the age of 91. A memorial service was held at Nantou(南投)”s Zhong Dao(中道) Academy, and over 2,000 Buddhist masters arrived, to pay their respects to the departed monk.
To attain wisdom, let go of attachments.
With rapid increase in world population and the strings of natural disasters, Taiwanese scientists are Looking for ways to increase grain production. By using gene transfer and gene assisted breeding, the scientists have developed new strains of rice, that offer increased resistance to drought, pests and much more.

In our reports based on the winners of this year”s Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award, today we take a look at the story of Wei Rongzong(魏榮宗), who is the Dean of General Affairs Division at Yuanzhi(元智) University in Taiwan. 5.
In the past, when hands get caught in work place machineries, the most frequent solutions was amputation, but thanks to recent discoveries, these limbs can now be saved. In Taiwan, after Mr. Xu(許) got his hand caught in a machine, he thought he would have to amputate it, but at Dalin(大林) Tzu Chi Hospital, with micro-reconstructive surgery, doctors were able to save Mr. Xu(許)”s hand.
On the Power of Kindness
To further Tzu Chi”s cause, it is necessary to promote the power of kindness throughout the world. The increased frequency of natural disasters results from human actions; mankind should accumulate more blessings by doing good deeds, to overturn collective bad karma.
Salt production takes place when we put sea water in a field, and with enough sun light and wind, salt flakes are formed after the water evaporates. In today”s feature report on Taiwan”s unique trades, we travel to Tainan(台南)”s Beimen(北門) to meet a few senior salt workers and experience the life of these hard working people.

After the fields were abandoned in 2002, Taiwan Salt Corporation handed over the ownership, to non-government organizations. And to keep the tradition alive, the new owners, decided to turn these old salt fields, into a tourist attraction.

Thus, although the classes seem to be nothing more than a pleasant pastime, they are actually at the front line of keeping patients healthy.

On Frugalness
Throughout the course of history, human activities have contributed directly to the destruction of our environment, resulting in disasters that cannot be averted. In times of peace and harmony, it is ever more important to promote the ideas of frugality and benevolence to save the world before it’s too late.
In England, Queen Elizabeth’s father, King George the Sixth, suffered from a speech defect that made him stutter. Luckily, with help from an Australian speech therapist, the king overcame his fear of speaking and the moving story was later turned into the movie, ”The King’s Speech” starring Colin Firth. In Taiwan, there are many like King George who have speech impediments, whether caused by autism or hearing problems. And in our feature reports on Taiwan’s unique trades, we meet one speech therapist, Zhang Jingwen(張靜文), to see how she is helping these patients with the same condition speak fluently.
In Taiwan, Lv Yuejun(呂岳駿), a kindergartener, at the National Taichung Special Education School for the Visually Impaired, became fully blind due to a brain tumor. However, his condition does not stop him from playing piano and singing. Recently, he even won second place in a singing contest in his community. Let’s take a look.

Next, we take a look at the life of leather artisan Cai Yichen’s(蔡亦宸). Since he was young, Cai has had to take care of his mother and five sisters who all suffered from a genetic disease called spino-cere-bellar a-taxia, which causes increasing degradation of body control. Unfortunately, at the age of 28, the disease also struck Cai Yichen(蔡亦宸); however, he has not given up on life, but instead, has learned the skills of leather carving to support himself.

20th anniversary of TC Australia Chapter
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Tzu Chi Australia Chapter. To celebrate the occasion, volunteers put on 4 sessions of performance on the Sutra of Profound Gratitude to Parents, at Sydney’s Concourse Theater Hall. Beside spreading the message of filial piety, Tzu Chi volunteers from the 6 cities all hoped, to introduce Tzu Chi to the mainstream audiences.
Self disciplined and diligent
Every year, Tzu Chi will award New Shoots Scholarship to students who excel academically. In Penghu are 2 brothers, Cai Zhenliang (蔡振亮) and Cai Zhenhao (蔡振豪), whose parents divorced when they were young, and the family’s source of income is dependent on their father’s odd jobs. When they return home from school, the pair also prepare dinner and does housework.
3. 快行優先BRT(七)友善交通 BRT, the future trend of transportation
As our viewers might know by now, the BRT system offers several advantages over traditional buses, in terms of service, speed and price. However, what you may not know, is that in countries such as South Korea, the BRT is leading the way in changes to environmentally friendly buses, that run on natural gas or electricity. As well, the buses are all equipped with handicapped-friendly features, that ensure every citizen has easy access to public transportation.
1900 Assisting Tzu Chi volunteers
After the 3/11 Earthquake in 2011, Japan Tzu Chi volunteers arrived at the city of Hi-ga-shi-ma-tsu-shi-ma, to distribute consolation cash and relief supplies. Among the quake survivors is Su-ga-wa-ra Mi-chio, who is a retired member of the Japan Self Defense Forces. In spite of being a disaster victim himself, Mr. Su-ga-wa-ra decided to join the volunteers’ ranks.
Medication delivery staff in Taiwan
To help tuberculosis patients receive the treatment they need, the World Health Organization established a “Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course”, also known as DOTS, where an assigned staff will deliver medication to the patients each day. The disease has a 95 percent chance of making a full recovery, and only needs a 6-12 month continuous treatment on the right medicine. In our feature reports on Taiwan’s unique trades, we meet one of these medication delivery staff, Ye Qingfu(葉清福), who is in charge of delivering medication to patients living in the Nanao(南澳) District.
Helping those in rural areas
In 1953, Dr. Roland Brown arrived in Hualien, Taiwan, to help those suffering from illnesses. He later established the Men-no-nite Christian Hospital, hoping to provide better medical services to local residents. To thank Dr. Brown for his contribution over the past 40 years, Taiwan’s National Immigration Agency granted him, a permanent residency visa.

Tzu Chi care recipient, Ye Shouliang
In Penang, Malaysia, Tzu Chi care recipient Ye Shouliang(葉首良), has been taking care of his three daughters after his wife passed away in 1998. However in 2006, Ye had a stroke that left him paralyzed and unable to work. To help the family, in 2007, Tzu Chi began providing them with both financial subsidies and emotional support.
Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital staff outing
Back in Taiwan, the Dalin (大林) Tzu Chi Hospital recently held an annual staff outing. Unlike other companies, these outings are about doing good deeds for society, and this year it focused on bringing care and love to the elderly people in a nursing home. As many of the participating staff did not have any experience in interacting with senior residents, Tzu Chi volunteers were asked to share their tips.

Staying in China, in traditional Chinese culture, children are often too shy to show their love to parents. To encourage residents to express their gratitude towards parents, Tzu Chi volunteers visited two companies in Dongguan(東莞), of Guagdong(廣東) Province, to share their personal experiences.

In the aftermath of Japan ’s 3/11 disasters, Tzu Chi distributed consolation cash to disaster victims in the worst-hit areas. Since then, Tzu Chi volunteers have been receiving thank-you letters and postcards from the quake survivors. Recently, the volunteers once again visited the Shio-ga-ma City in Miyagi Prefecture, to see how their old friends are doing.
4. 快行優先BRT(六)台灣BRT
In our continuing reports on the BRT system, we return to Taiwan, where the cities of Taichung and Kaohsiung, are currently in the process of finalizing plans for the building of BRT lines. Although public ridership is around 37 percent in Taipei and New Taipei City, it stands at 7.6 percent in Taichung and 6.6 percent in Kaohsiung. Currently these two cities are exploring ways, to encourage more residents to ride public transportation, and the BRT is front and center in both cities ’ plans for the future.

In 2002, Dengue Fever infected some 5,000 people and took the lives of 21 in Southern Taiwan. To prevent the disease from spreading, apart from the local health bureau, the Environmental Protection Agency and even police officers have been mobilized, to encourage the general public to maintain a clean environment. An inspection team from Taiwan ’s Centers of Disease Control has been working hard over the past 10 years, to minimize the spreading of Dengue Fever.
Next, we join a group of inspection staff, as they go door to door in search of larvae, that might turn into dangerous mosquitoes. From garages, stock rooms, to abandoned toilets, all hidden corners are checked. Wearing their distinctive blue uniform, these inspection staff, who refer to themselves as ”Smurfs”, work all year round to keep Taiwan ’s residents, safe from the mosquito-born disease.
Also in Taiwan, we meet Yan Weiting (顏瑋婷), who was born without a right arm, but always sees the glass as half full. Yan has not let her disability stop her from playing table tennis or attending Chaoyang(朝陽) University of Technology in Taichung. She hopes to inspire others with disabilities, to not let their condition stop them from dreaming or living life to the fullest.

Construction work for Indonesia’s Jing Si Hall, began in May of 2009, and this year on October 7th, it was finally completed. To mark the occasion, for the past three months, volunteers have been preparing various performances including a sign language show, based on the treacherous journey taken by Venerable Jianzhen to spread Buddhism in Japan. In spite of the language barrier, the volunteers all did their best, to remeber the movements.

In Guatemala, Tzu Chi volunteers held a free clinic in San Agustin, a municipality of El Progreso, which is the poorest region of the country. Besides the poor living conditions, the lack of medical services also is a source of problems. In our continuing look at BRT systems, this time we travel to Seoul, in South Korea, where more residents are choosing to ride the BRT, as they find that the system is fast, convenient, and cheap. And that means a win-win situation for the city, as well as Seoul”s residents, who are enjoying all the benefits that the first class public transportation system has to offer.
