Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I”m Leeway Tsai. Thank you for joining us. Tzu Chi distributes aid to nearly 6,200 families in the typhoon-wrecked Aklan Province of the Philippines. With the Water Repentance show having taken Taipei and Kaohsiung audiences by storm, we meet the organizing committee who made the massive production possible. And, in our On This Day feature, we find out how medical imaging technology revolutionized file storage and transfer at Tzu Chi hospitals.

1. 菲颱風發放 Bringing aid supplies to the needy
The Philippines experiences 20 typhoons a year on average. At the end of July, a typhoon left a trail of destruction in Aklan Province, southeast of Luzon. To help those in need, Tzu Chi volunteers arrived with rice, blankets and second-hand clothes, for 6,200 families.
菲律賓每年平均有20個颱風侵襲，今年七月底，呂宋島東南部的阿克蘭省部份地區就受到颱風重創，為了幫助受災的居民，慈濟志工帶著大米、毛毯，以及二手衣服，給6200戶家庭。
2. 愛在杉林(五)：課輔班 Wednesday after-school class in Shanlin
Staying on the topic of tropical storms, it has been two years since Typhoon Morakot flooded much of southern Taiwan. In the aftermath of the disaster, Tzu Chi built the Shanlin Da Ai Community, in Kaohsiung County, to house some of the survivors. The aid work continues today with job-creation and training projects for the community, and after-school classes for the children. In our next story, we join teaching volunteers on their regular Wednesday afternoon visit to Shanlin.

3. 中慈器官捐贈 Giving the gift of life
The Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital aims to protect the health of residents in Central Taiwan. The hospital also actively promotes organ and bone marrow donations to help people give the gift of life.
台中慈濟醫院旨在守護大台中鄉親們的健康，並大力倡導民眾參與器官捐贈與骨髓移植，好讓更多寶貴生命得以延續。
4. 祖父母節敬老 Gratitude, inheritance and filial piety
Taiwan”s 2nd annual Grandparents” Day will be celebrated on August 28th. The Ministry of Education has decided on the theme of ”Gratitude, Inheritance and Filial Piety”, and is encouraging children to invite their grandparents to the first day of school on August 30.
8月28日是台灣的第二屆祖父母節，教育部將今年的主題定為「感恩、傳承和孝親」，並且在8月30日開學當天，在各個學校邀請祖父母們一起陪著小朋友上學去。
5. 加煙火節環保 Celebration of Light in Vancouver
We go to another celebration, this time in Vancouver, Canada, for the popular annual firework festival, ”Celebration of Light”. This year, the summer event was held from July 30 to August 6. To make sure the environment was kept clean, the coordinators asked Tzu Chi to help. Over 180 volunteers were at the festival site, picking up litter and also teaching people how to sort and recycle their trash.
我們將鏡頭轉到加拿大的溫哥華，一起參與夏季盛事「光明煙火節」，今年分別在7月30號與8月6號舉辦，為了確保環境的乾淨，主辦單位請慈濟志工協助，超過180位志工來到現場，除了撿垃圾之外，志工們也宣導資源回收。

On the tenth anniversary of Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, Master Cheng Yen talked about devoting our lives to enter lives and save lives.
Although far from easy, when a patient recovers and goes back to their job with a smile on their face, the world is truly lit up with happiness.

開示：大林慈院十週年，提及醫護團隊用生命走入生命去搶救生命，雖然辛苦，但病患能再度站起來，展露笑顏回到工作崗位，讓社會多一分人力，確實是笑開了天下人的心。
6. 覺醒懺文(三)：水懺排練幕後 Giving birth to Water Repentance
Tzu Chi”s sign-language and musical spectacular ”Water Repentance” successfully premiered in Kaohsiung”s K-Arena last weekend, and showed in the Taipei Arena this weekend. The musical is nearly two hours long, and is performed by 2,097 mostly amateur actors. The groundbreaking show has also opened a new path to introduce Buddhism to the public. Thanks to the hardworking production team, it took less than eight months to bring the musical from an initial concept to a public performance. Let”s see how they did it.
慈濟的慈悲三昧水懺手語音樂劇，上個周末成功的在高雄巨蛋公演，而這個周末演出來到台北小巨蛋，整個音樂劇長達兩小時，每一單場有兩千零九十七位，大部分為志工的人參與演繹，這也開創音樂手語劇弘揚佛法的新形式。也由於製作團隊的努力，從策劃到正式呈現，歷時僅近八個月，來看看他們怎麼做到的。
7. 水懺鄭美珠 An ill volunteer remains strong-minded
We meet one of the Water Repentance performers, Tzu Chi volunteer Zheng Meizhu(鄭美珠), who took part in the show despite her illness. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in June this year, and had a surgery to remove the tumor in July. Eight days after the surgery Zheng was back for the rehearsals. Let”s meet this strong-willed individual and find out what fuels her commitment.
接下來，我們來認識一位水懺表演者，慈濟志工鄭美珠，雖然生病，卻仍參與表演。今年六月她被診斷出罹患乳癌，七月做腫瘤切除手術，八天後就到分會報到參與彩排。讓我們來認識這位堅強的媽媽，並了解讓她走下去的動力。
8. 克難入經藏--林璧媛 No distance too great for truth
For Tzu Chi volunteer Lin Biyuan, traveling to the Water Repentance practice venue doesn”t mean taking the MRT, or even driving a car, it means a flight from Kinmen to Taipei. Moved by the Water Repentance sutra, Lin Biyuan says she is determined to overcome all obstacles - and distances - to participate.
慈濟志工林璧媛，每次共修或練習，她不是搭捷運也不是開車，而是從金門坐飛機來台北練習，因為深受水懺經文的感動，她說自己一定會克服距離上的困難，參與經藏演出。
9. 0815歷史的今天 On this day, the 15th of August
1945 Japan surrenders in WWII
On August 6, and 9, 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as an ultimatum for Japanese surrender in World War II. On this day in 1945, in a national radio broadcast at noon, then emperor Hirohito announced his capitulation, bringing an end to the war.
1959 Henchun 7.1 earthquake
On this day in 1959, Hengchun(恆春) in Taiwan”s Pingtung County suffered a magnitude 7.1 earthquake, which flattened buildings in the town, Checheng Township, and surrounding areas. The tremor sent jets of earth and water into the sky, and caused a tsunami of 60 cm. The disaster claimed 20 lives.
2000 TC Hospital digitize image files
Taiwan”s Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital was the first in the country to digitalize the storage of its x-rays, CT scans, and other image files, which allowed them to be instantaneously transferred to any location, thus greatly reducing patients” waiting time. The environmental impact was also minimized as there was very little need to develop x-rays.
2005 Indonesia Da Ai housing signed
On this day in 2005, the CEO of the Indonesian Tzu Chi chapter Liu Sumei(劉素美) signed a contract with builders in Aceh to construct housing communities in Banda Aceh, Greater Aceh and Meulaboh. 3,000 houses would be built for displaced survivors of the 2004 Asian tsunami.
歷史的今天，八月十五號。1945年，日本裕仁天皇宣讀停戰詔書。1945年八月六日、九日，美軍先後在日本廣島、長崎
投下原子彈，1945年這天中午12點，日本人民從廣播中聆聽裕仁天皇宣讀停戰詔書，二次世界大戰正式宣告結束。
1959年，恆春7.1強震，台灣十大地震。1959年的這天，台灣屏東縣恆春發生規模七點一的強烈地震，造成恆春、車城等地房屋倒塌，山崩地裂，夾雜噴沙、噴水，引發六十公分海嘯，約20人罹難。
2000年，全台首創數位醫療影像。台灣花蓮慈濟醫院是全台第一家啟用數位醫療影像的醫學中心，將X光片、電腦斷層檢驗結果以數位化方式儲存，透過網路傳輸，縮減民眾等候時間，免除X光片沖洗過程，落實環保醫療。
2005年，援助南亞災民，亞齊大愛屋簽約。2005年的這天，慈濟印尼分會執行長劉素美，這天與建商簽訂亞齊大愛屋興建合約，將在班達亞齊、大亞齊，以及美拉波等地區，興建超過三千戶大愛屋，安頓南亞海嘯災民。
10. 慈濟醫療影像數位化 PACS benefits doctors & patients alike
As you just saw in the video, on this day in 2000, the Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital in Taiwan put into place a picture archiving and communication system, or PACS, to digitally store and transfer image files and other scanned data. The files can be simultaneously accessed from many different locations, no matter how far apart they are. The technology also means more resources and support for those on medical outreach programs.
回顧歷史，花蓮慈濟醫院在2000年8月15日實施數位醫療影像系統，以電子化的方式儲存影像、資料等，不管多遠，都能擷取這些數位化的資料，這套系統也代表往診時能讓偏遠地區民眾獲得服務，也提升品質。

1.巴拉圭冬發放Winter warmers for needy families
First up today, it's winter in Paraguay, so local Tzu Chi volunteers recently went to the Santa Ana neighborhood, of the capital Asuncion City, to hand out supplies - including blankets and food baskets - to 264 families. Though it was overcast on the day of the distribution, the arrival of the volunteers brightened up the residents.
今天節目一開始，巴拉圭正值寒冬，慈濟志工特別前往亞松森的Santa Ana，為264戶人家帶來過冬物資和毛毯，儘管天空灰濛濛的，但是志工的愛暖了大家的心。
2.菲獨居修屋Never give up
From Paraguay to the Philippines, where we meet 62-year-old Lolita Mergano. Now living alone, her youngest daughter committed suicide, and her son was involved in the murder of her husband. Coming under Tzu Chi's care, Lita - as her friends call her - used some of the money, she got from Tzu Chi, to set up a business, and now puts some of her profits into a bamboo coin bank, to help others in need.
鏡頭從巴拉圭轉到菲律賓，帶您認識一位六十二歲的蘿麗塔阿嬤，她在小女兒自殺、兒子弒父之後，一個人獨居，朋友都叫她麗塔，在慈濟長期關懷下，麗塔還把慈濟補助的生活費部分拿來做生意，為的是能投錢進竹筒，幫助其他人。
3.深山保育員(3)台灣黑熊Animal station bears a burden
Run by Taiwan's Endemic Species Research Institute, the Low Altitude Experimental Station is a sanctuary for Formosan black bears. The station currently has nine animals, that were either injured in traps, or for other reasons cannot be returned to the wild. In the latest in our series of features on the people who protect Taiwan's wildlife, we meet the keepers at the station.
農委會特有生物研究保育中心低海拔實驗站，是台灣黑熊的收容中心，中心現在收容有9隻黑熊，牠們都是因為誤觸捕獸夾受傷，或是某些因素無法返回大自然棲息地，今天的深山保育員專題中，帶大家認識特生中心的飼養員。
4.綠能教室A low carbon classroom
Chi Mei(奇美) Optoelectronics Corporation, and Innolux Education Foundation, have come together to help Dashan(大山) Elementary School in Taiwan's Miaoli(苗栗) County, to set up a low carbon classroom. The electrical appliances are all powered by the energy produced from two solar panels. Moreover, a thermostat, light meter and CO2 detector, help the teachers and students know when to switch on and off the lights and fans. With the hi-tech equipment, the carbon footprint produced by the classroom, is only half that of normal classrooms.
奇美電子公司和群創教育基金會，一起協助苗栗縣後龍鎮的大山國小，成立一間減碳教室，教室電燈、電扇和電器電力，都來自樓頂的兩塊太陽能光電板，另外，教室有溫度，照度和二氧化碳的監測儀器，讓師生掌握適合開燈和開電扇的時機，有了這些先進的儀器，讓減碳教室的用電量只有一般教室的一半。
5.緬甸佛寺環保Keeping temple clean
For a long time, Tzu Chi volunteers in Myanmar have been going to Khamayana Nunnery School, to share their unique culture with the students. Unfortunately, apart from the humanistic atmosphere in the air, because the school is near a garbage dump, it often reeks of decomposing waste. So, the volunteers initiated a cleanup campaign, enlisting the help of the enthusiastic students. It was also a chance to teach the youngsters about environmental awareness.
緬甸慈濟志工長期和當地的柯瑪雅娜佛寺互動，分享人文理念，不過除了瀰漫人文氣息之外，因為佛寺鄰近垃圾堆，充滿垃圾臭味，志工決定帶動大家做環保，沙彌尼也一起幫忙，志工也透過這個機會和大家分享環保觀念。
6.大愛感恩獲獎Da Ai Technology recognized
In celebration of Republic of China's 100th birthday, more than 200 businesses in Taiwan were recognized by the government, for their contribution to the country. Among them was Da Ai Technology, which was commended for making environmentally friendly clothes, out of recycled plastic bottles. To help raise awareness of conservation, the company now includes information on how its products are made, on the QR code on the price tag. A quick scan, with a smart phone, gives shoppers the background story behind the items they are buying.
適逢中華民國建國百年，全台總共有兩百多家廠商獲得優良廠商金萃獎，其中包括大愛感恩科技公司，因為用回收的寶特瓶做出環保的衣物，而為了提高環保意識，大愛感恩科技也特別製作了二維條碼在產品的標籤上，透過智慧型手機的掃描，讓消費者可以一目了然產品的製造過程。
7.印尼周尼A reformed gambler
Johny Chandra is an Indonesian Tzu Chi volunteer, who developed the habit of gambling in middle school. It wasn't until he was hospitalized, for liver disease, in 2007; and a 25-year-old friend of his died in an accident, that he finally realized how he was frittering his life away. Now, the reformed gambler is making up for his reckless past, by caring for the needy, and doing recycling work.
在印尼，有一位慈濟志工周尼，他從國中開始就無所不賭，一直到2007年肝病住院，加上一位年僅25歲的朋友意外往生，讓他發現過去空過許多人生，現在周尼不再賭博，而是膚慰苦難，做環保救地球。
8.汶川團訪杉林Youcheng Foundation visit Shanlin
The China Social Entrepreneur Foundation, also known as the Youcheng(友成) Foundation, is non-profit organization, made up of disaster relief groups. After seeing how Tzu Chi helped earthquake victims in Sichuan, the Foundation put together a delegation to visit Taiwan. On Tuesday, they stopped by the Shanlin Da Ai Community, and were moved by what they saw.
友成企業家扶貧基金會，簡稱友成基金會，是個非政府組織，由許多幫助災民重建家園的代表所成立的，在看到汶川地震，慈濟如何提供助援，讓大家深受啟發，決定到台灣參訪，在6月28日星期二，代表團來到南台灣的杉林大愛園區，並被他們所看到的深受感動。
9.歷史的今天On this day, the 30th of June.
Tower Bridge of London
Sometimes mistakenly called "London Bridge", the British Capital's Tower Bridge officially opened on this day in 1894. Sitting over the River Thames, the suspension bridge is also a drawbridge allowing vessels on the river to pass unhindered.
1964 Shimen Dam finished
After eight years of construction and costing more than 3.2 billion NTD, the main dam of the Shimen Reservoir in northern Taiwan was completed on this day in 1964. The reservoir provides irrigation and drinking water to northern Taiwan, generates electricity, and also regulates seasonal flooding. 23 years later, Taiwan's second largest reservoir, the Feitsui Dam would also be completed on the same day.
1995 Computing for the blind
Researched and developed by Tamkang University of northern Taiwan, a new computer system designed specifically for the blind was unveiled on this day in 1995. Using Chunghwa Telecom's voice system and a special mouse for the blind, the visually impaired could now use word processing applications.
2007 TIMA care for handicapped children
Northern Taiwan TIMA teamed up with Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital on this day in 2007 to conduct free clinics for children with disabilities in New Taipei City. The program would eventually reach out to some 50 institutions that care for children.
1894年，英國倫敦塔橋通車啟用，有時候會被誤稱為倫敦鐵橋，英國首都的塔橋1894年的今天正式啟用，它橫跨泰晤士河，這座吊橋其實也是座活動橋，讓河上的船隻暢行無阻。
1964年，石門大壩竣工，遠東第一高壩，歷經八年，工程經費高達三十二億新台幣，北台灣的石門大壩，1964年的今天竣工，結合了灌溉、發電、給水、防洪等多重功能，台灣第二大水庫，翡翠水庫，也在23年後的同一天完工。
1995年，首創盲用電腦，淡江大學新研發，由北台灣的淡江大學自行研發成功的盲用電腦，在1995年的今天與世人見面，結合中華電信的中文語音系統，以及導盲滑鼠系統，讓視障者能進行文書處理工作。
2007年，特教學童健檢，慈濟人醫接力，由北區慈濟人醫會志工與台北慈院合作，在2007年的今天，為新北市地區的特教學童看診，到現在衍生成服務五十多所學校的特教學童。
10.馬六甲雙親節Celebrating Parents' Day
To celebrate Father's Day in Malaysia, children at the Da Ai Educare Center, in Malacca, held a small tea ceremony for their parents, as a way to say thank you. Pupils aged four to six prepared snacks for the event, which was attended by proud mothers and fathers.
六月份的父親節，馬六甲大愛兒童教育中心在各班級舉辦了雙親感恩會，四歲到六歲班的小朋友，親手制作了各式的點心，讓爸爸媽媽們非常引以為傲。

農委會特有生物研究保育中心低海拔實驗站，是台灣黑熊的收容中心，中心現在收容有9隻黑熊，牠們都是因為誤觸捕獸夾受傷，或是某些因素無法返回大自然棲息地，今天的深山保育員專題中，帶大家認識特生中心的飼養員。
4.綠能教室A low carbon classroom
Chi Mei(奇美) Optoelectronics Corporation, and Innolux Education Foundation, have come together to help Dashan(大山) Elementary School in Taiwan's Miaoli(苗栗) County, to set up a low carbon classroom. The electrical appliances are all powered by the energy produced from two solar panels. Moreover, a thermostat, light meter and CO2 detector, help the teachers and students know when to switch on and off the lights and fans. With the hi-tech equipment, the carbon footprint produced by the classroom, is only half that of normal classrooms.
奇美電子公司和群創教育基金會，一起協助苗栗縣後龍鎮的大山國小，成立一間減碳教室，教室電燈、電扇和電器電力，都來自樓頂的兩塊太陽能光電板，另外，教室有溫度，照度和二氧化碳的監測儀器，讓師生掌握適合開燈和開電扇的時機，有了這些先進的儀器，讓減碳教室的用電量只有一般教室的一半。
5.緬甸佛寺環保Keeping temple clean
For a long time, Tzu Chi volunteers in Myanmar have been going to Khamayana Nunnery School, to share their unique culture with the students. Unfortunately, apart from the humanistic atmosphere in the air, because the school is near a garbage dump, it often reeks of decomposing waste. So, the volunteers initiated a cleanup campaign, enlisting the help of the enthusiastic students. It was also a chance to teach the youngsters about environmental awareness.
緬甸慈濟志工長期和當地的柯瑪雅娜佛寺互動，分享人文理念，不過除了瀰漫人文氣息之外，因為佛寺鄰近垃圾堆，充滿垃圾臭味，志工決定帶動大家做環保，沙彌尼也一起幫忙，志工也透過這個機會和大家分享環保觀念。
6.大愛感恩獲獎Da Ai Technology recognized
In celebration of Republic of China's 100th birthday, more than 200 businesses in Taiwan were recognized by the government, for their contribution to the country. Among them was Da Ai Technology, which was commended for making environmentally friendly clothes, out of recycled plastic bottles. To help raise awareness of conservation, the company now includes information on how its products are made, on the QR code on the price tag. A quick scan, with a smart phone, gives shoppers the background story behind the items they are buying.
適逢中華民國建國百年，全台總共有兩百多家廠商獲得優良廠商金萃獎，其中包括大愛感恩科技公司，因為用回收的寶特瓶做出環保的衣物，而為了提高環保意識，大愛感恩科技也特別製作了二維條碼在產品的標籤上，透過智慧型手機的掃描，讓消費者可以一目了然產品的製造過程。
7.印尼周尼A reformed gambler
Johny Chandra is an Indonesian Tzu Chi volunteer, who developed the habit of gambling in middle school. It wasn't until he was hospitalized, for liver disease, in 2007; and a 25-year-old friend of his died in an accident, that he finally realized how he was frittering his life away. Now, the reformed gambler is making up for his reckless past, by caring for the needy, and doing recycling work.
在印尼，有一位慈濟志工周尼，他從國中開始就無所不賭，一直到2007年肝病住院，加上一位年僅25歲的朋友意外往生，讓他發現過去空過許多人生，現在周尼不再賭博，而是膚慰苦難，做環保救地球。
8.汶川團訪杉林Youcheng Foundation visit Shanlin
The China Social Entrepreneur Foundation, also known as the Youcheng(友成) Foundation, is non-profit organization, made up of disaster relief groups. After seeing how Tzu Chi helped earthquake victims in Sichuan, the Foundation put together a delegation to visit Taiwan. On Tuesday, they stopped by the Shanlin Da Ai Community, and were moved by what they saw.
友成企業家扶貧基金會，簡稱友成基金會，是個非政府組織，由許多幫助災民重建家園的代表所成立的，在看到汶川地震，慈濟如何提供助援，讓大家深受啟發，決定到台灣參訪，在6月28日星期二，代表團來到南台灣的杉林大愛園區，並被他們所看到的深受感動。
9.歷史的今天On this day, the 30th of June.
Tower Bridge of London
Sometimes mistakenly called "London Bridge", the British Capital's Tower Bridge officially opened on this day in 1894. Sitting over the River Thames, the suspension bridge is also a drawbridge allowing vessels on the river to pass unhindered.
1964 Shimen Dam finished
After eight years of construction and costing more than 3.2 billion NTD, the main dam of the Shimen Reservoir in northern Taiwan was completed on this day in 1964. The reservoir provides irrigation and drinking water to northern Taiwan, generates electricity, and also regulates seasonal flooding. 23 years later, Taiwan's second largest reservoir, the Feitsui Dam would also be completed on the same day.
1995 Computing for the blind
Researched and developed by Tamkang University of northern Taiwan, a new computer system designed specifically for the blind was unveiled on this day in 1995. Using Chunghwa Telecom's voice system and a special mouse for the blind, the visually impaired could now use word processing applications.
2007 TIMA care for handicapped children
Northern Taiwan TIMA teamed up with Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital on this day in 2007 to conduct free clinics for children with disabilities in New Taipei City. The program would eventually reach out to some 50 institutions that care for children.
1894年，英國倫敦塔橋通車啟用，有時候會被誤稱為倫敦鐵橋，英國首都的塔橋1894年的今天正式啟用，它橫跨泰晤士河，這座吊橋其實也是座活動橋，讓河上的船隻暢行無阻。
1964年，石門大壩竣工，遠東第一高壩，歷經八年，工程經費高達三十二億新台幣，北台灣的石門大壩，1964年的今天竣工，結合了灌溉、發電、給水、防洪等多重功能，台灣第二大水庫，翡翠水庫，也在23年後的同一天完工。
1995年，首創盲用電腦，淡江大學新研發，由北台灣的淡江大學自行研發成功的盲用電腦，在1995年的今天與世人見面，結合中華電信的中文語音系統，以及導盲滑鼠系統，讓視障者能進行文書處理工作。
2007年，特教學童健檢，慈濟人醫接力，由北區慈濟人醫會志工與台北慈院合作，在2007年的今天，為新北市地區的特教學童看診，到現在衍生成服務五十多所學校的特教學童。
10.馬六甲雙親節Celebrating Parents' Day
To celebrate Father's Day in Malaysia, children at the Da Ai Educare Center, in Malacca, held a small tea ceremony for their parents, as a way to say thank you. Pupils aged four to six prepared snacks for the event, which was attended by proud mothers and fathers.
六月份的父親節，馬六甲大愛兒童教育中心在各班級舉辦了雙親感恩會，四歲到六歲班的小朋友，親手制作了各式的點心，讓爸爸媽媽們非常引以為傲。
